No fewer than 40,000 bags of rice are to be distributed to residents of Borno through the Food Intervention Programme of Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF).

Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno made this known in Maiduguri at the flag-off of the distribution exercise of the 10kg bags of rice.

The governor, who was represented by the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Ali Isa, said the gesture would cushion the effect of the hardship in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ADF penultimate week commenced the distribution of one million bags of rice across the 774 local government areas in the country.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to alleviate the suffering of our people, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan,” Zulum said.

He said that the donation was a testament to the foundation’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and promoting social welfare.

“We are deeply thankful to Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the entire foundation for their kindness and philanthropy,” he said.

The governor urged the people of Borno to continue to pray for peace, stability and prosperity of the state and country.

Earlier, the representative of ADF, Mr Usman Muhammad, said the gesture was aimed at supporting government’s effort.

According to him, the foundation focuses on improving the living conditions of Nigerians.

Muhammad said the donation was targeted at the poor and the vulnerable in the state.

A beneficiary, Ms Aisha Modu, 50, said as a displaced person, the donation of rice by the ADF would go a long way in alleviating her hardship.

Another beneficiary, Umaru Aliyu, 60, said he would use the rice to feed his six children.

He prayed God to continue to bless the Chairman of the foundation, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.(NAN)

Group seeks dissolution of pensioners union’s executives

Some pensioners under the aegis of Concerned Federal Civil Service Pensioners Stakeholders on Thursday called for immediate dissolution of the national executives of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).

The Coordinator of the group, Mr Ignitius Uzomah, who made the call at a news conference in Abuja, alleged that the NUP had no substantive election known to law that produced the current national officers of the union.

Uzomah said his call also followed the exclusion of federal pensioners in the scheme of things of the union, adding that the federal arm of the union contributed 10 per cent funds to the union.

“We filed a complaint to the Federal Ministry of Labour over the Federal Civil Service Pensioners (FCSP) election where we stated that there was a constitutional breach regarding the election that produced NUP executives and all parties were invited.

“It is a constitutional provision that the state controllers of labour in the 36 states must confirm for the election to be validated.

“It is on record that all our members in the state have confirmed to us that the election that was supposed to hold on Oct. 3, 2024 did not hold.

“Our members have not been adequately carried along side-line in the NUP executives because currently our memberships have reduced from nine executive members to three at state levels,’’ he said.

He expressed concern over the inability of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Ministry of Labour to adequately address their demands amid suppression by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners.

“Our demands are that we want the national officers of NUP to be dissolved and new elections be held, and also want a full representation of Federal Civil Service Pensioners into the leadership positions of NUP.

“This is because we contribute 10 per cent of pensioners` funds in the union and aside from that we have more experienced technocrats than those who dominate the union from the states and local governments,’’ he said (NAN

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has lauded the Foundation for a Better Foundation (FABE foundation) for promoting eco-consciousness and environmental sustainability among schoolchildren in the state.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, represented by Mrs Bola Adewunmi, Director, LAWMA Academy, said this at the closeout ceremony of EcoschoolNg project on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EcoSchoolsNG initiative was borne out of a vision to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to become champions of sustainability, stewards of the environment, and pioneers of the circular economy.

The project is championed by FABE Foundation, an environmental sustainability non-governmental organisation (NGO) under the sponsorship of Aspire Coronation Trust Foundation (ACT Foundation) and Access Bank to promote climate action.

Gbadegesin commended the initiative and efforts of FABE in training climate conscious youths in the promotion of a circular economy.

“Basically the programme today is about turning waste into wealth, which is primarily the sources waste management. We want to reduce what goes into our landfills and we are also teaching the kids out there to reuse and then reduce waste.

“At LAWMA, we believe it is not waste until it is wasted.

“What we are propagating now is for the children to sort their waste from source, so that the waste that can be recycled, can be properly used in a clean state.

“FABE foundation is an NGO that we have identified with, in teaching and educating the students, especially in public schools both theoretically and hands on where they learn how to turn tyres into ottomans and chairs.

“They learn also how to make flower vases from pet bottles covers. All tiers of education from the primary, to the secondary and tertiary schools are being taught how to turn waste to resources.

“This has made these students entrepreneurs even from a young age.

“LAWMA is also propagating education in sustainability so our children can imbibe the culture of a cleaner and safer environment for us all,” Gbadegesin said.

One of the Eco-ambassadors and a participant at the 10-month EcoschoolNg project, Ahmed Robiu of Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, was grateful to be part of the sustainability training.

“My experience at the EcoSchoolNG 10-month programme brought me great happiness and intelligence.

“Without the introduction of EcoSchoolNG, we have not been able to turn our waste to wealth but with the knowledge we have acquired through FABE foundation.

“We can now turn our trash to treasure and change our surroundings by recycling and upcycling.

“And I started my first earning with N50,000 with a capital of just N10,000 I loaned from my mother.

“We do not have furniture in our house, we were not able to accommodate our visitors, now with training from FABE foundation I have been able to turn my plastic waste into a beautiful ottomans that we can use to entertain our visitors.

“My message to parents out there is to encourage their kids in whatever they are doing in environmental sustainability,” Robiu said .

Another participant at the EcoschoolNg project, Oyindamola Adenaike, Abesan Senior High School Lagos, appreciated the foundation for equipping the students with life skills.

“FABE foundation has taught us that we should not spend our money, we should not waste our money to buy things that we can easily source for through the use of waste resources.

“FABE foundation with the help of this programme have impacted us, that we are not doing this for only ourselves, we are doing it for the betterment of others, our environment and the economy,” Adenaike said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The call was made at the 2025 IWD celebration organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, in collaboration with the Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers Association in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that civil society organisations, rural women, and concerned Nigerians gathered to address the challenges faced by rural women and advocated for their inclusion in governance and policy formulation.

The event, themed “Accelerate Action: Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women,” highlighted the crucial role rural women play in national development and the importance of their participation in governance.

Mrs Bassey Ita-Ikpang, Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, stressed the importance of empowering rural women to ensure their voices were heard in decision-making processes.

She noted that if things improved in rural areas, the entire nation would benefit, urging support for rural women to assert their rights.

“Rural women are the backbone of our communities, and their voices must be heard.

“Their voices must be amplified in decision-making spaces, policy dialogues, and economic opportunities,” he said.

Nizasaan emphasised that education and digital empowerment are crucial to unlocking opportunities for rural women.

The +234 Art Fair is set to create a supportive ecosystem for emerging Nigerian artists, foster patronage to elevate their careers and strengthen the creative industry.

Its founder, Ms Tola Akerele, while speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, said that the fair would provide vital platform for artists, particularly those in remote areas and without gallery representation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fair, which will showcase the works of 260 artists, is organised in partnership with Ecobank Nigeria and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), among other sponsors.

The theme of the fair is, “Championing Patronage in Nigerian Art”, and will take place at the Ecobank Pan African Centre (EPAC) in Lagos.

“Our core mission is to nurture and empower young artists. We must ask: how can we, as patrons, create a supportive environment.

“How do we inspire the next generation and build an ecosystem that truly promotes their growth.

Akerele noted that the fair would feature four pavilions showcasing 2D art, 3D sculptures, photography, digital art and children’s art with focus on the theme of patronage.

This, she explained, is to ensure that the artists thrive in the art market and contribute to the Nigerian economy, noting that patronage extends beyond financial transactions.

“Support can take many forms: mentorship, providing workspace, financial advice, or connecting artists with reputable galleries.

“We are creating a platform for sales, but also for sustainable career development,” she added.

Recognising the importance of engaging the youth, Akerele noted that the fair included a dedicated children’s gallery that would encourage early appreciation of art and encourage artistic aspirations.

She said, “We need to show young people that a career in art is viable.”

Ms Omoboye Odu, Head SME, Partnerships and Collaboration, Ecobank Nigeria Ltd., highlighted the bank’s commitment to supporting the creative industry as a key driver of economic growth.

Odu said, “Ecobank recognises the creative industry as an essential driver of economic growth, well-being, and global connectivity.

“Our medium-term objective is to become the primary gateway for pan-African trade facilitation, and supporting initiatives like +234Art is integral to that vision.

Some victims of Yelwa Tsakani’s 2022 crisis in Bauchi state have called on the state government to come to their aid and fulfil its promises.

Some of the victims, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday, said that without the government’s intervention, it would be difficult to recover their lost properties.

They urged the state governor, Bala Mohammed, to fulfil his pledge to the victims of the civil and religious crisis that occurred in the community on March 27, 2022.

They told NAN that the crisis resulted in the loss of one life, the destruction of approximately 11 houses, and extensive damage to other properties, leaving many families displaced, traumatised, and without shelter.

‘’During your visit to the affected community, Your Excellency gave a heartfelt assurance of support, including a commitment to rebuilding the destroyed homes and helping the victims recover. This gesture brought us hope and reaffirmed our trust in your leadership.’’

One of the victims, Mr John Haruna, attested to the fact that the governor promised to help them in getting their lost properties back, adding that he asked them to give accounts of what they lost in the form of houses and everything inside before the tragedy.

“He said he would see what he could do to help us and actually promised to fix everything for us.

“We gave them everything as demanded from us and later on, he came and gave us food items like rice, corn, millet and also gave us things like blankets and mats.

“That is all we received from the government but to talk about the issue of the houses that were razed along with the properties inside, we have not received or gotten anything in that regard.

“I will like to use this opportunity to plead with the governor to help us look into the matter because many of us that were affected could not afford to reconstruct their houses up till now.

“Although I have done some renovations and moved back to my house but not with the properties lost, I know that some other people could not afford to renovate not to talk of getting their lost properties back,” he said.

Another victim, Ismail Haruna, noted that the governor would revisit the promises he made to them on their plight if he can read it again on the pages of Newspapers.

Also, Mr Obed Bulus, who corroborated the fact that the state government only gave them grains and some clothing materials, said it had not compensated them in terms of what was lost to the crisis.

“The governor promised us that he will help us before the next rainfall in 2022 and we waited for so long but we didn’t see anything and we had to give up.

“We don’t know whether the press can help us get to the governor to hear our prayers for him to revisit the situation and help us,” he said.

Efforts by NAN to speak with officials of the State’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, proved abortive as of press time.

Ms Adama Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, said she could not comment on the move of the Ministry towards addressing the situation.

She added that the Commissioner for the Ministry, Hajiya Hajara Wanka, had travelled out on an official assignment, and pledged to respond as soon as possible.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
