Residents of Kano on Thursday heaped praises on the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, for canceling this year’s Sallah Durbar due to security concerns.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ado-Bayero had announced the cancellation at his Nasarawa Mini palace in Kano on Wednesday.

According to Ado-Bayero, the peaceful coexistence of the people takes precedence over the celebration.

“Durbar celebration is not a do- or-die affair for me, the peaceful coexistence of the people is much more paramount to me than anything.

” We pray that the decision to suspend the Durbar procession will improve the peaceful coexistence of our people and our blessed Kano.

“I am calling on the people to use the festive period to visit friends and family to improve on cordial relationships.

” I pray that the we are among the God’s favour in the blessed month of Ramadan,” Ado-Bayero stated.

Many residents of the ancient city have commended Ado-Bayero for dousing tension ahead of the Sallah celebration.

A resident, Hajiya Safara’u Umaru, described the  decision by Ado-Bayero to cancel his Durbar as a welcome gesture.

” The traditional ruler’s action should be hailed by all peace-loving residents of the state as it will ensure peace and tranquility during the festival.

” This is especially important since Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, along with three others Emirs of Rano, Karaye and Gaya were also planning to hold their own Durbars.

” This would have led to parallel Durbars in Kano, potentially plunging the city into violence.

” By canceling his Durbar celebration, Ado-Bayero has demonstrated his commitment to his people’s peace, progress and development.

” I urge all traditional rulers in Kano and other states to follow Ado-Bayero’s noble example,” she said.

Malam Abdulsalam Mohammad of Naibawa, Tauroni Local Government Area also commended Ado-Bayero for choosing peace over Durbar celebration.

” Kano, a critical state in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa, cannot afford to risk its peaceful coexistence for personal interests.

” I must admit that the announcement has eased the tension that previously enveloped the commercial city.

” Regardless of sceptics’ perspective, Kano, Ado-Bayero and our people have all emerged victorious from this patriotic decision, ” he said.

A journalist, Muhammad Kabir, said Ado-Bayero’s decision to suspend the celebration was a welcome development that would give peace a chance to prevail.

” The initial plan to hold parallel Durbars was seen as an attempt to tear Kano apart.

” The mature decision by Emir Ado-Bayero to cancel the plan demonstrates his leadership and love for Kano,” he said.

Alhaji Sani Mohammed of Unguwar Wambai in Ungogo Local Government Area  praised the emir’s decision, stressing the importance of prioritising safety and the well-being of residents.

” He has demonstrated that he is a leader that prioritises the well-being of his subjects,” he said.

For Gambo Ishaku, a resident of Charanchi area of Dala Local Government Area, ” the security situation is a top priority and we support this move for the overall good of Kano and the country as a whole.”

The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr. has called on Nigerians to use religion to foster peace and empower the less privileged in the society.

The envoy made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the breaking of fast (Iftar) and distribution of food to thousands of fasting Muslims and non Muslims at the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society (AIS).

He described Islam as a religion of peace which focuses on spirituality and helping the less privileged in the society.

Mills , who was the special guest of honour at the event, said his understanding of Islam since he served in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Lebanon has shown that the religion promotes peace and encourages charity to the poor.

He charged other religious organisations and well-to-do Nigerians to always reach out to the poor in the society.

“My view of Islam is the one I’ve had for so many years since I served in Saudi Arabia as the US ambassador, in Iraq, Lebanon that Islam is a religion of peace.

“It’s a religion that put emphasis on spirituality, relationship to God and the involvement of charity and helping the less fortunate.

“And this again reminds us of the values shared by many of the world’s religion, Christianity and Judaism,” he said.

Former Governor of Plateau,  Sen. Simon Lalong in his remarks, said that when the poor are well fed and empowered, there will be less crime in the society.

“As a Christian, one of the best portions of the Bible was when Jesus Christ was sharing meals like this to the needy.

“Today, it’s a privilege to be part of those sharing meals and people are smiling.

“A lot of them when I came I was asking myself I hope there would be no stampede.

“I like the orderliness displayed and everybody got meal, very rich meal. Sharing the meals to them shows service to humanity by the Organisation (Al-Habibiyyah),” he said.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, says it will impound any articulated vehicle seen carrying animals with passengers in the state.

The state FRSC Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, made this known to newsmen after a meeting with members of the Ondo State House of Assembly on Wednesday in Akure.

He said that all anomalies associated with articulated vehicles in the state would be addressed for road safety.

He said that advocacy with enforcement agents on the activities of drivers of articulated vehicles were ongoing in the command.

“Enforcement is ongoing to address ‘mixed loading’ which is the mixture of humans and goods/animals.

“We are not taking it for granted; we will arrest and impound vehicles caught in such an act.

“We are collaborating with stakeholders in ensuring that drivers are cautioned and that they desist from the act.

“When crashes occur, you will think that it’s only the driver with his motor boy that is involved, but surprisingly, you will see over 10 persons in the vehicle, with cows.

“So, we are going on advocacy and enforcement; anybody that is caught will have his vehicle impounded and will be sanctioned accordingly,” Ibitoye said.

The sector commander said he was in the House to seek the support of the Speaker, Chief Olamide Oladiji, and the lawmakers in ensuring road safety in the state.

“We are here to seek their synergy and bring them to the fold because road safety is a shared responsibility.

“Everybody, old and young, the high and the low, must play their roles to ensure that our roads are safe and saner for the good of this country and the development of the nation,” he said.

Ibitoye advised road users to always be patient on the roads to forestall accidents.

“My advice is that road users should be patient; patience is the answer. They should not speed, drive dangerously, or overload their vehicles.

“They should not be in a rush but plan their journey very well and abide by the rules. This will save their lives and that of other road users,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
