President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians especially the elite to be fair in their criticism of his administration.

Mr Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesman said Buhari made the appeal when he received in audience Rev. Yakubu Pam, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday

The president said:  “Those criticising the administration should be fair in terms of reflecting on where we were before we came, where we are now and what resources are available to us and what we have done with the limited resources.

“We had to struggle paying debts, investing in road repairs and rebuilding, to revamp the rail and try to get power.

“This is what I hope the elite, when they want to criticise will use to compare notes.”

On the security situation especially in the Northeast, the president remarked: “What was the situation when we came? Try and ask people from Borno or from Adamawa for that matter and Yobe.

“What was the condition before we came and what is the condition now? Still, there are problems in Borno and Yobe, there are occasional Boko Haram problems,  but they know the difference  because a lot of them moved out of their states and moved to Kaduna, Kano and here (in Abuja).

“We were not spared of the attacks at the time. The government is doing its best and I hope that eventually, our best will be good enough.”

Buhari also assured that the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons was paramount on the agenda of government.

“The people in IDP camps, the weak, aged, I feel sorry for the young because this is the time they are supposed to get education.

“We must not allow this time to pass because it will never be regained. So we are really interested in what is happening there and we are doing our best,” the president said.

He commended the Executive Secretary on his activities on peace building around the country in spite of his short time in the saddle and assured him of the listening ear of the government whenever he had contributions to make.

Earlier in his remarks, Pam had intimated the president with some of the activities of the Commission since he was appointed in July 2020.

According to him, such activities include; organisation of Peace Summit on Southern Kaduna as well as  peace building efforts in Plateau, Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa States.

He added that the commission had proposed to host Christian religious leaders in a summit to help douse pressures within the polity, among other plans lined up. (NAN)

Kogi earmarks N3bn for Nigeria CARES implementation

The Kogi Government has set aside over N3 billion to expand access to livelihood support and food security for the poor and vulnerable.

Gov. Yahaya Bello donated the money under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus – Program for Results (Nigeria CARES).

He announced the donation, while declaring open a one-day key stakeholders’ sensitisation and training programme on Kogi Government version of NG CARES Programme for Results on Thursday.

Represented by Dr Folashade Ayoade-Arike, Secretary to State Government (SSG), Bello said the programme was divided into three areas including Basic Social Cash Transfer under Social Safety Network Program; FADAMA and SMEs.

He gave an assurance that the release of the earmarked N3 billion for the programme had been captured in the 2021 budget.

“In Kogi, we do not believe in bureaucratic bottlenecks. We will make sure releases are made without undue bureaucracy,’’ the governor said.

Asiru Idris, the state Commissioner of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning said KG CARES Programme for Results was aimed at mitigating the effects of COVID-19 on the people and businesses in the state.

“As we know, Kogi State has no evidence of COVID-19. However, COVID-19-induced effects are very much with us, which have reduced our revenue  and escalated inflation, thereby putting needless pressures on our people.

“In early 2020, the world started to witness huge disruptions over COVID-19 related issues. COVID forced lockdowns and restrictions across the globe and across sectors, which almost sniffed life out of humanity.

“Expectedly, this led to inability of businesses to cover their recurrent costs, leading to upsurge in unemployment, inflation, poverty and other disturbing social and economic indices,’’ the commissioner said.

Dr Abdulkarim Obaje, National Coordinator, Federal Project Support Unit (FPSU) of Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) of the World Bank, commended the Federal and State Governments as well as the World Bank for rising to the challenge.

Obaje who was represented by Mr Niyi Oduneye, noted that the second wave of the pandemic was more virulent and more dangerous than the first one.

Mrs Deborah Ogunmola, the state Head of Service (HOS), said COVID-19 had affected over 200 countries, territories and areas in the world; destroying their economy, food security and livelihood.

She said that the pandemic also negatively impacted on livelihoods resulting in loss of wage/income, non-wage income in form of diaspora remittances, food insecurity as well as impact on household/micro enterprises.

Malam Momoh Dauda, General Manager, Kogi State Community and Social Development Agency (KGCSDA), said the implementing agency of the programme was an initiative of the World Bank to assuage the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on livelihood.

“The World Bank is trying to assist in Nigeria and is giving a loan of about 170 million dollars to all the states.

“Each state will be entitled to 20 million dollars while FCT will have 50 million dollars to address the effects of the COVID-19,’’ Dauda said. (NAN)

Twitter chief opens up on Trump’s ban

Twitter’s chief executive Jack Dorsey on Wednesday defended the platform’s decision to suspend U.S. President Donald Trump’s account indefinitely, but also said it sets a dangerous precedent.

Twitter banned the outgoing president in the wake of the attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob last week.

“I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter, or how we got here.

“After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter,” Dorsey wrote in a Twitter thread.

However, he also said he feels turning to a ban ultimately shows a failure by Twitter to promote healthy conversation.

“Having to take these actions fragment the public conversation. They divide us.

“They limit the potential for clarification, redemption, and learning. and sets a precedent I feel is dangerous: the power an individual or corporation has over a part of the global public conversation,” Dorsey wrote.

Facebook has also banned Trump from using his accounts, citing his intent to “undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power.”

Trump has complained that social media platforms are exercising censorship and suggested he may launch a competing platform.

Amazon had earlier on Wednesday defended its decision to kick the social network Parler from its cloud servers, saying the platform popular with Trump’s supporters failed to delete threats of violence.

Some people used Parler to spread messages promoting insurrection and to plan for last Wednesday’s deadly invasion of the U.S. Capitol.

Amazon Web Services booted social network Parler on Monday in a move that effectively removed it from the internet.

The conservative-friendly platform then filed a lawsuit in a Seattle federal court that demanded Amazon keep Parler on its service.

Parler argued Amazon was driven by “political animus” and the decision was “the equivalent of pulling the plug on a hospital patient on life support. It will kill Parler’s business – at the very time it is set to skyrocket.”

Amazon hit back in its response on Tuesday, saying the case “is not about suppressing speech or stifling viewpoints.”

“This case is about Parler’s demonstrated unwillingness and inability to remove from the servers of Amazon Web Services content that threatens the public safety, such as by inciting and planning the rape, torture, and assassination of named public officials and private citizens.”

Amazon then listed more than a dozen examples from Parler users, including: “After the firing squads are done with the politicians the teachers are next” and “We are going to fight in a civil War on Jan. 20th, Form MILITIAS now and acquire targets.” (dpa/NAN)

Centre to facilitate dialogue on national security

Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD) says it will mainstream a society-driven national dialogue for peace, national unity, security and sustainable development.

Amb. Sani Bala, Executive Director of the centre, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Bala said that the centre was desirous of restoring public confidence in the Nigeria State, which concerned Nigerians had argued was heightening the divides in the country.

According to him, the divide is creating widespread demand for dialogue and consensus building on restructuring.

He said that the SCDDD welcome like-minded and willing Civil Society Organisations domiciled and active within the different geopolitical zones and the FCT to join in driving the process of meaningful national dialogue.

“This will lay sound basis for the development of the common grounds for durable peace, national unity, security and sustainable development in Nigeria,’’ he said.

Bala said that the first phase of the dialogues was expected to be from the end of January to April.

He said that the SCDDD and stakeholder CSOs and other groups were expected to commence their deliberations at the zonal levels.

“Although our national challenges are varied and wide spread, the zonal level deliberations will focus on these interrelated thematic areas of unity, security, youth engagement and CSO-Government partnerships across the country,’’ he said.

He said that the role of the CSOs as grassroots monitoring and humanitarian organisations in promoting and advocating for accountability in governance and pushing for the presence of government in all communities were increasingly being recognised.

He said that the United Nations, the African Union and ECOWAS were encouraging communities to do same.

“Hence, there is need for partnership between the CSOs, state and Federal Governments.

“The centre appeals to stakeholders in the six geopolitical zones and the FCT that are supportive of defining the challenges of governance in the country to fully participate in the zonal meetings.

“The zonal meetings will soon be called by their zonal CSOs driving the dialogue,” he said.

According to him, the Savannah Centre strongly encourages the participating stakeholders to make the pragmatic recommendations aimed at proffering lasting solutions to our national challenges.

“At the end of the first three months, Savannah Centre, alongside representatives of the stakeholders on these engagements, shall interface with the Federal Government and zonal governments.

“The meeting will craft positive pathways and supportive sets of activities that can contribute to the success of the needed nation-building process that can guarantee peace, national unity, youth engagement and sustainable development,” he said.

Presidency frowns at Forum’s ultimatum on Father Kukah

The Presidency has frowned at the reported ultimatum given to the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Matthew Kukah to tender apology to the Muslim Ummah over his recent “malicious comments” against Islam, or leave the state.

The ultimatum was said to have been handed over to Kukah by a group based in Sokoto, Sokoto State.

Reacting to the ultimatum in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, condemned the decision of the group, saying their action was contrary to the nation’s Constitution.

He said groups such as the Muslim Solidarity Forum must be seen to share and uphold the country’s multi-religious principles.

Shehu, however, cautioned that individuals like Kukah must respect the feelings of his fellow Nigerians in his private and public utterances.

The statement read in part: ”The reported ultimatum by a group based in Sokoto, “Muslim Solidarity Forum,” calling on the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Matthew Hassan Kukah to tender an unreserved apology to the entire Muslim Ummah over his recent “malicious comments” against Islam, or quietly and quickly leave the state, is wrong because it is not in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

”Under our Constitution, every citizen has the right to, among others, freedom of speech and expression, the right to own property and reside in any part of the country, and the right to move freely without any inhibitions. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.

”The right for all religions to co-exist is enshrined in this country’s Constitution. The duty of the government, more so, this democratic government, is to ensure that the Constitution is respected. But all must respect the rights and sensitivities of their fellow Nigerians.

”Father Kukah has greatly offended many with his controversial remarks against the government and the person of the president, with some even accusing him of voicing anti-Islamic rhetoric.

”On matters such as these, responsible leadership in any society must exercise restraint. Knee-jerk reactions will not only cause the fraying of enduring relationships, but also the evisceration of peaceful communities such as Sokoto, the headquarters of the Muslim community as beacon of pluralism and tolerance.

”The Sultanate has historically had good relations with followers of all faiths. That is why Father Kukah was received on his arrival in Sokoto with friendship and tolerance.

”Under our laws, groups or factions must not give quit notices, neither should they unilaterally sanction any perceived breaches. Where they occur, it is the courts of law that should adjudicate. Unilateral action is not the way to go.

”Groups such as the Muslim Solidarity Forum must be seen to share and uphold the country’s multi-religious principles. And individuals like Father Kukah must respect the feelings of his fellow Nigerians in his private and public utterances.”
