The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, has called for intensified efforts in drug prevention across all sectors of society.

Marwa made the call on Friday at the National Mosque, Abuja, during a Jumat prayer held as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the global theme for this year’s World Drug Day is “Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.”

The NDLEA boss emphasised that the evidence was clear that prevention was more effective and less costly than rehabilitation.

Marwa said the prayer session was meant to raise awareness, assess progress, and seek divine intervention in the fight against drug abuse.

“The purpose is to create awareness to this global drug problem, review what has happened in the preceding year.

“Also, to locate gaps, if any, and determine how we can improve the war against drug abuse and trafficking,” Marwa said.

Marwa noted that the NDLEA had designated Friday for Muslim prayers and Sunday for Christian thanksgiving, invoking God’s guidance and expressing gratitude for the agency’s recorded successes.

According to him, the NDLEA under his leadership has made 66,085 arrests and 12,205 convictions, seized over 11,000 tons of illicit drugs, and destroyed more than 1,500 hectares of cannabis farmland.

He, however, said over 26,000 individuals have also undergone counselling and rehabilitation within the period.

“That’s like 400 trailers lined up over 15 kilometres. These are significant milestones, and we must thank God for them while praying for greater progress,” he said.

Marwa commended President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in tackling unemployment and food insecurity, which he said were major root causes of drug abuse.

He urged state governors to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda by supporting youth employment and community development initiatives.

“When there is poverty and hunger, people fall into frustration and misery, which often lead them to seek relief through drugs,” he said.

Speaking on the theme, Marwa stressed that prevention starts from the family and called for responsible parenting as a key pillar in drug control efforts.

He emphasised the importance of a whole-of-society approach, involving religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society, and labour unions.

Marwa also disclosed that the NDLEA had conducted over 11,000 grassroots sensitisation campaigns in the past four years, reaching schools, markets, parks, and various public spaces.

“Parents must pay more attention, show more love and care, even when they don’t have much materially. Parenting is critical,” he said.

Speaking, Prof. Khalid Aliyu, an Imam at the Abuja National Mosque, urged Nigerians to intensify support for the NDLEA in its fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Aliyu, who described drug addiction as a tragic destroyer of lives and future, said that Islam strongly prohibited all forms of intoxicants.

He said that the religious community must not remain silent while drug abuse continues to wreak havoc in Nigerian society, especially among the youths.

“We are gathered here to advocate against drug abuse, trafficking, and the production and sale of narcotics.

“Islam has clearly warned against intoxicants. Drug abuse has tragically destroyed the lives, futures, and mental well-being of many young men and women in our society,” he said.

The Imam described the scourge of drug abuse as a “nagging problem” that has led some youths into madness, criminality, and hopelessness.

He praised the NDLEA for its relentless efforts and “giant strides” in tackling the menace, adding that it was a fight that required collective action from all members of society.

He also stressed the importance of a spiritual and moral approach in addition to enforcement and prayed for divine assistance for the NDLEA to continue its mandate effectively.

“It is not the responsibility of the NDLEA alone. This is a global fight recognised by the United Nations. Therefore, all hands must be on deck.

“We prayed for Allah’s support for the agency to check this growing challenge, so that our youths can become sober, introspective, and return to the right path,” he added.

NAN reports that the Jumat prayer is part of a week-long line-up of events, including a press conference, NGO engagement, quiz competition, and thanksgiving service, in commemoration of World Drug Day. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

National Pension Commission (PenCom) has launched Pension Boost 1.0, a new initiative under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) aimed at increasing monthly pension payments to retirees.

With the launch, total monthly pension payouts have increased from N8.3 billion to N11.9 billion, effective June.

The Director-General of PenCom, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, made this known during the commission’s second-quarter media briefing in Lagos.

Oloworaran noted that the increase would directly benefit over 233,000 retirees, depending on their Retirement Savings Account (RSA) balances.

She said, “We are introducing Pension Boost 1.0. This is the news every retiree has been waiting for.

“Effective this month, total monthly pension payments under the CPS will rise from N8.3 billion to N11.9 billion. This will directly benefit over 233,000 retirees, depending on their pension account balances.”

The DG described the initiative as a strategic leap made possible by strong RSA investments and bold economic reforms under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“This is not a token gesture. It’s a result of sound investment returns and a visionary framework for pension enhancement.

“It is driven by our newly modified standard pension enhancement template, a transparent structure that allows upward pension adjustments as investment returns increase. This is just the beginning.”

The PenCom boss also revealed that the backlog of pension arrears had been nearly cleared, with all retirees up to March 2025 now having received their accrued pension rights and monthly entitlements.

She commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a N758 billion bond to settle outstanding pension liabilities, describing it as a landmark move demonstrating the government’s dedication to the welfare of Nigerian retirees.

“Thanks to the decisive leadership of President Tinubu, we’ve seen stable and consistent releases of funds for accrued rights since November last year. The end of pension arrears is very, very near.

“President Tinubu’s approval of the N758 billion bond to clear pension liabilities is further proof that this administration is rewriting the retirement narrative in Nigeria,” she stressed.

Reiterating PenCom’s vision, Oloworaran said the commission is focused on building a transparent, inclusive, and resilient pension system.

“We are restoring faith in retirement. We are rewarding work with dignity,” the DG added.

She also issued a warning to defaulting employers and complacent pension operators.

“To employers with late pension remittances, your grace period is over. To operators who remain complacent, there will be consequences. And to every Nigerian worker, we see you, we hear you, and we will protect your future.

“Let the pension industry take note: this is a new era, and we are not going to turn back. We will continue to move forward,” Oloworaran said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Constance Athekame

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a new directive requiring all grid-connected Power Generation Companies (GenCos) to fully integrate their operations with the National Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system by Dec. 31.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that (SCADA)/Energy Management System (EMS) serves as the central nervous system of grid operations—enabling automated controls, real-time fault detection, and live monitoring of power generation output.

According to the commission, GenCos that fail to comply with this directive will face significant financial penalties and possible disconnection from the national grid.

The directive is contained in a newly released regulatory framework titled: “Order on the Mandatory Integration of Grid-Connected Generating Units into the New SCADA/EMS for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.”

The order was published on NERC’s website on Friday and took effect from May 22.

It was signed by NERC Chairman, Garba Sanusi, and Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni.

According to the commission, the integration shall include real-time data transmission of the following parameters: Active Power, Reactive Power, Frequency, Voltage, Status of Circuit breakers, and Fault alarms.

It also said that the document further provided many other details required from the Gencos and other operators in the sector.

According to the commission, the order seeks to strengthen real-time monitoring of the power grid, improve operational efficiency, enhance load dispatch, and reduce nationwide system disturbances by ensuring full visibility of electricity generation across the country.

“The national grid has in recent years experienced several collapses, often traced to inadequate coordination between generation, transmission and distribution assets.

“Functional SCADA/EMS acts as the central nervous system of grid operations, enables automated controls, timely fault detection, and live monitoring of generation output.

“However, many GenCos are still not fully connected to this system,” it said.

The commission said that the new order compelled power generators to install SCADA-compliant data acquisition devices, ensure compatibility with the TCN’s protocols and allow remote visibility by the Nigerian Independent System Operator.

“The order read, “Pursuant to Section 12.2 of the Grid Code for the Nigeria Electricity Transmission System (the “Grid Code” or the “Code”), all the generation companies are mandated to provide real-time operational data to the Nigerian Independent System Operator through the SCADA/EMS to facilitate effective grid management.

“Section 20.16 further requires the GenCos to ensure seamless communication and data exchange with the Transmission Company of Nigeria SCADA/EMS for accurate system monitoring, fault detection, and load dispatch.

“Section 20.16.1 of the Grid Code stipulates that SCADA Remote Terminal Units shall be required in all the control rooms of the System Operator and at the Off-taker’s boundary site and the generator’s control room for the transmission of signals and indications to and from the National Control Centre.” it said.

The commission also noted that Section 20.16.2 of the code further provided that interface cabinets shall be installed in the relevant control room, and the user shall provide and maintain wiring and signalling from the user’s plant and apparatus to the interface cabinet.

It said that the SCADA/EMS/System Telecommunications project being executed by the TCN had progressed substantially to a level that required the integration of the power generation units to have a complete functional and efficient SCADA/EMS for the NESI

It said that the order aimed to, through the full integration of Gencos, enhance grid visibility and operational efficiency through real-time monitoring of grid operations to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Grid Code for the Nigerian Electricity Transmission System. World Refugee Day: BEACON calls for inclusive humanitarian response

As the world marks World Refugee Day, a Kaduna based NGO, the BEACON of Transformative and Inclusive Development Center, has called for inclusion in humanitarian response.

The theme of the BEACON’s celebration is “Inclusion in Exile: Protecting Dignity, Rebuilding Peace”.

Executive Director of the BEACON, Mrs Abigail Olatunde, in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday in Kaduna, lamented that over 120 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced.

Olatunde also lamented that Africa has more than 43 million displaced people, with Nigeria alone accounting for over four million internally displaced persons due to violence, environmental shocks, and insecurity.

She noted that the displaced face significant challenges, including lack of access to healthcare, education, legal identity and safe housing.

According to her, displacement affects everyone, but not equally, where persons with disabilities, older persons, women, and children face unique struggles.

“The humanitarian system often falls short, failing to provide inclusive services such as sign language interpreters, assistive devices and accessible shelters,” she said.

The executive director believed that peace is not just the absence of war, but the presence of justice, dignity, and opportunity.

She, therefore, called for an inclusive humanitarian design, access to healthcare, education, legal identity, shelter, recognition of climate-displaced persons and investment in resilience and dignity.

“Every child enrolled, every ID issued and every clinic with ramps, interpreters and inclusive care is an act of peacebuilding, not charity.

“Let us ensure inclusion, travel with people, even in exile, and protect the dignity of the displaced. Displacement may take people from their homes, but it must never take away their rights,” she said.(NAN)

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has launched a mobile app to help coordinate its members’ activities, support national development, and tackle the problem of unqualified practitioners in the profession.

Malam Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), launched the app on Thursday in Abuja and commended NSE for the innovation, calling it a milestone in local content development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the app is designed to enable NSE members to access information, register for projects, and participate in community impact initiatives in support of national development.

Inuwa, represented by Mr Salisu Kaka, Director, E-Government and Digital Economy Department at NITDA, said the app would support engineers in delivering on their mandate while also contributing to Nigeria’s digital transformation.

He urged the NSE not to limit the innovation to internal use but to share its benefits widely to address broader national challenges.

“This innovation aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s digital public infrastructure agenda, a framework aimed at unifying digital service delivery across government institutions for more efficient public services and economic growth.

“These digital public goods are technologies developed to solve societal problems. What NSE has done qualifies as such and, with collaboration, it can be adapted and exported to other sectors,” he said.

Inuwa noted that the engineering profession is fundamentally about problem-solving, and many of the challenges engineers address are common across sectors and locations.

He expressed optimism that, with slight modifications, the app could also be used to tackle similar issues in other industries.

Speaking at the event, NSE President and Chairman-in-Council, Mrs Margaret Oguntala, said the app would improve coordination within the Society by keeping members informed of activities at both the national and branch levels.

Oguntala explained that the platform would also promote greater member involvement in social impact initiatives.

“Members will now be able to register for community-impact projects and training programmes directly through the app,” she said.

She added that the app would serve as a practical tool in the fight against quackery in the engineering profession.

“If someone approaches me for a job, I can quickly log into the app to confirm whether the person is a registered NSE member.

“If not, the person is also unlikely to be registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). This will help us to curb the activities of quacks in the profession.

“Eventually, we plan to develop a system that allows even non-members to verify registered engineers before awarding jobs,” she said.

Oguntala described the mobile application as a contribution to national development, saying it reflects the society’s embrace of digital transformation and its alignment with the digital agenda of the current administration. (NAN)

The National Youth Stakeholders Forum (NYSF) has urged the Federal Government to recruit Forest Guards to address the security crisis, particularly in Benue.

Mr Oladotun Hassan, the forum’s National Leader, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday, urging concrete reforms from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said it was time to overhaul Nigeria’s security framework and prioritise Forest Guard recruitment, increased intelligence funding, and better coordination among security agencies.

Hassan stressed the need to modernise military equipment and improve synergy among the armed forces, police, and intelligence services.

He called for improved welfare packages for security personnel to prevent corruption and ensure morale remains high in tackling insecurity.

According to him, the government must provide scholarships, free healthcare, and competitive salaries to match what is obtainable in the U.S. army.

Hassan also demanded swift justice for those behind the Benue massacre, including any public officials or security personnel found to be complicit.

He urged the Federal Government to begin genuine dialogue and reconciliation efforts to address the root causes of violence in Benue and other parts of Nigeria.

He said President Tinubu should resolve the herder-farmer conflicts and land disputes through the Nigeria Inter-Ethnic Nationalities Peace Commission.

The forum also urged the government to enhance regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the illegal flow of arms across Nigeria’s borders.

Hassan decried the killings in the Yelwata community of Benue, where scores of people were killed.

He asked the President to assess the situation critically and respond decisively to the crisis in Benue and other affected states.

Hassan called for immediate recruitment of able-bodied youths from vulnerable communities into Forest Guard units.

He also recommended creating a National Joint Regional Security Task Force Network Agency to complement existing security efforts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu has directed the Benue and Nasarawa governments to set up a peace committee.

Jobberman Nigeria, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, under the Young Nigeria Works programme, successfully convened the Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts Roundtable on Thursday in Abuja.

The event brought together key stakeholders across government, the private sector, civil society, digital platforms, and development organisations to address urgent barriers and emerging opportunities in the digital employment landscape for Nigeria’s most vulnerable groups.

These include women in disadvantaged communities, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

In a keynote address, Mr Abba Isa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, emphasised the importance of building inclusive digital ecosystems that provide equitable access to employment and economic dignity for all Nigerians.

The roundtable opened with remarks from Hilda Kabushenga, CEO of The African Talent Company (TATC), the parent company of Jobberman.

Kabushenga said: “Technology can and must be a force for inclusion, not division. As the world of work evolves, we must ensure that no one is left behind. Today’s conversations are not just about technology, they are about equity, access, and opportunity.”

A key highlight of the event was the presentation and validation of a new research report titled: “Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts”.

The report explores how digital platforms such as job boards, gig and remote work platforms, and social media can unlock access to meaningful employment for marginalised populations.

It also outlines the structural, cultural, and technological barriers these groups face, including low digital literacy, unaffordable data costs, and discrimination in the labour market.

The Technology and Employment Inclusion in Marginalised Contexts research highlights inequalities in employment access for marginalised groups in Nigeria.

“Nearly 9 in 10 employers don’t recruit from these groups, with 72% making no effort toward inclusive hiring. Skills gaps, transport issues, and bias remain major barriers, yet 55% of PWDs and 44% of displaced women have found work, often through self-employment in creative/media and agricultural sectors.

“Poor educational access, as 85% of schools unequipped for PWDs, compounds the problem, though digital tools and remote work are creating new pathways. The report revealed that employers now cite a need for subsidised inclusivity training and public recognition to drive change.”

Breakout sessions were held focusing on three critical groups: women in disadvantaged communities, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons.

Each session provided space for honest dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, generating insights to inform policy and practice.

Rosy Fynn, Country Director, Mastercard Foundation Nigeria, highlighted the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to inclusive economic growth.

“This roundtable aligns with our mission to enable 30 million young Africans, particularly young women, to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030. Inclusion is not a side conversation, it is the main agenda. We must design systems where marginalised groups are not just considered but centered,” she said.

She said outputs from the event, including a policy and practice brief, would inform employment programming, platform design, and advocacy initiatives.

She added they would also contribute to the broader Young Nigeria Works learning agenda, which is focused on advancing scalable solutions for meaningful work among young people in Nigeria.(NAN)

President Bola Tinubu has praised Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State for restoring peace and initiating infrastructural development across the state.

Tinubu praised the governor on Thursday during his official visit to inaugurate several key projects in the state.

This is contained in a statement by the President’s spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

Projects inaugurated include the Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development in Rigachikun, a 300-bed specialist hospital, and 100 CNG buses.

Tinubu said the governor had advanced the state by promoting peace and fostering reconciliation among various ethnic groups.

He assured that the Federal Government would support the construction of a light rail system for better transportation.

“I commend Gov. Uba Sani for prioritising security and infrastructure. We are here to celebrate his visible results.

“Uba Sani is a force for change, unity, and development. He has transformed a tense atmosphere into one of peace.

“You are an exceptional leader. Kaduna is back on track, and I am proud to work alongside you,” Tinubu said.

The President also lauded the state’s traditional rulers for backing the governor’s peace and development initiatives.

“I am pleased to return here. I have long-standing ties with Kaduna in politics, business, and democracy,” he said.

Tinubu added that Sani had become a model for other states by building lasting peace.

“During the campaign, we needed heavy security to reach Birnin Gwari. Now, people can travel there safely even at midnight.

“I thank the governor for spearheading peace efforts. Peace is essential for progress. Kaduna is rising once again.

“I will collaborate with you to realise your full development agenda,” he said.

Governor Sani, in his remarks, reaffirmed his dedication to serving the people of Kaduna State.

“Mr President, we thank you for supporting our transport master plan’s smooth implementation.

“You honoured your word by allocating ₦100 billion in the 2025 budget for Kaduna Light-Rail Transit,” Sani said.

The governor also thanked the President for helping to tackle security challenges in the state.

“When we took office in 2023, Kaduna was under siege, plagued by banditry and mistrust.

“Vibrant farming communities had turned into ghost towns. Highways were unsafe and ridden with crime.

“We refused to surrender. We knew security is the base for all other progress. Without it, development is impossible.

“So, Mr President, we are truly grateful for your support,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Col. Abubakar Dangiwa (retired).

This is confirmed in a statement on Thursday by the President’s spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

Dangiwa is a former military Governor of Kaduna State and a respected advocate for democracy in Nigeria’s political development, particularly during the transition from military to civilian rule.

Tinubu announced the honour during the inauguration of a 300-bed hospital and vocational training institute in Kaduna, as part of his one-day working visit to the state.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu acknowledged an oversight made during his June 12 Democracy Day address to the National Assembly and the nation.

He used the occasion to publicly correct the omission, stating his intention to recognise Dangiwa’s significant role in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Some individuals were left out in my June 12 address. Colonel Dangiwa was one of them. Let me now honour him with the CFR award,” Tinubu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dangiwa earned national recognition as a ‘soldier of democracy’ during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

However, his name was notably missing from the list of national honourees read out during the Democracy Day celebration at the National Assembly complex.

The President extended a public apology for the omission, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to acknowledging patriotic service, especially by unsung democratic champions.

Dangiwa governed Kaduna State from August 1985 to June 1988, during the military regime of Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

During his tenure, he was known for his courage, discipline and progressive stance, which earned him admiration both within and outside military circles.

After retiring from the Nigerian Army in 1993, he transitioned into public commentary and social advocacy, emerging as a prominent critic of authoritarian governance.

Dangiwa later founded the Movement for Unity and Progress (MUP), a political platform that campaigned for national unity, justice and inclusive democratic governance.

His contributions to Nigeria’s political evolution have been widely documented and appreciated by civil society and pro-democracy advocates across the country.

The conferment of the CFR award is seen as a long-overdue recognition of his efforts and a reaffirmation of his place in Nigeria’s democratic history. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Bolaji Dada, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has urged young people to embrace creativity and innovation to thrive in their careers.

She gave this charge on Wednesday during a programme organised by the Ministry to mark the 2025 World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that WCID, celebrated globally on April 21, raises awareness of creativity’s key role in human development.

Dada emphasised that thinking outside the box fosters a resilient and progressive society, urging youth to apply creativity and innovation in all aspects of life.

She noted that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration continues to invest in skills acquisition and vocational training for women and young people.

“In today’s fast-changing world, creativity is essential — from business to technology — the strength of ideas and original thinking cannot be overstated,” she said.

She described this year’s WCID theme, ‘Harnessing Creativity for Global Progress,’ as both timely and uplifting for the Ministry’s ongoing mission.

The Ministry, she said, aims to empower and transform lives through skill-building, education, and innovation across the state.

“Our skills acquisition centres have become innovation hubs, nurturing ordinary people into exceptional talents,” she added.

Dada called on the private sector, NGOs, and development partners to collaborate with the Ministry to expand platforms for creativity to flourish.

She praised the instructors at the skills centres for their dedication to passing on valuable knowledge and practical skills to their students.

She also encouraged those who showcased their crafts during the training to remain committed and continue honing their skills.

“We are proud to display the remarkable talents of our students in trades like fashion, catering, carpentry, beadwork, and digital technology.

“These young artisans and creatives represent the future we envision — one driven by innovation, inclusion, and economic empowerment.

“We must understand that innovation grows where support, mentorship, and investment are present.

“Let’s equip our youth with tools, opportunities, and confidence to imagine, create, and achieve great things,” she said.

Also speaking, Mrs Joy Ikpea, the resource person at the event, urged youth to distinguish themselves through creativity and innovative approaches.

She described innovation as the country’s “new crude oil” and encouraged young people to tap into its potential to succeed.

“What sets you apart in a crowd doing the same job is your creativity and uniqueness.

“The world isn’t waiting for excuses — it wants to see what you’re doing differently,” she added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
