We want Nigeria where no child is exploited, excluded – Children’s Parliament

National Children’s Parliament has urged stakeholders to build a Nigeria where no child faces violence, forced labour or exclusion.

The Speaker of the parliament, Progress Umoh, made the call at the 2025 National Children’s Day in Abuja on Tuesday.

Umoh said that children craved for a country where every child has the tool to learn, dream and grow to full potential.

She pointed out that many children face violence, fear and exclusion in spaces meant to nurture them, adding that children demand more than promises.

“We demand protection. As Nelson Mandela said — a society’s soul is measured by how it treats its children.

“Let us honour that truth with action.

“As the speaker of the National Children’s Parliament, I stand before you not just as a young Nigerian but as a voice for millions of children whose rights and future depend on meaningful action.”

She said that the Children’s Parliament serves as vital platform where young voices unite to address critical issues, propose solutions and drive change.

According to her, children deserve a seat at the table in shaping policies that affect them.

She noted that the theme of the global observance — “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation”, is an urgent call to action.

She, therefore, called for full implementation of the National Policy on Safe Schools to ensure every child learns in a safe environment without fear.

The speaker also stressed the need to strengthen child rights advocacy clubs in rural and underserved areas.

This, according to her, will empower young leaders to speak up.

She explained that “while initiatives like the National Commission for Almajiri Education are commendable, we need bolder steps to rescue out-of-school children, providing them education, safety and skills for the future.

“Programmes like the Girl-Led Movement proves that when children lead, change happens, such
initiatives must include all children, ensuring their voices shape decisions about their lives.”

Responding, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the rights, dreams and future of every Nigerian child.

Represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, the president described children as “the precious part of the nation’s fabric.”

Wike was also represented at the event by the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud.

Tinubu added that children are also the heartbeat of Nigeria’s future and custodians of tomorrow’s promise, innovation and leadership.

He said “I, therefore, reaffirm today, our constitutional, moral and intergenerational duty and commitment to safeguard every Nigerian child, protect their rights and nurture their dreams.”

Similarly, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said children’s day serves as an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to uphold the rights of every child to survive, thrive and fulfil their potential.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim added that the day also presents an opportunity to reflect and renew commitment to the rights, protection and wellbeing of every Nigerian child.

She said the Federal Government would strengthen the Nigeria Children’s Parliament to institutionalise child participation in governance.

“We are also developing the institutional framework for a National Child Protection and Development Agency.

“This strategic action aligned with the ministry’s Five-Year Strategic Roadmap to ensure accountability, coordination and sustainability in child welfare programming.”

On her part, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Pioneer Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs, said “we are here to recognise the significance of our children in the family circle and the society at large.

“Importantly, we are here to stress the obvious fact that our children are great asset to us, they represent our hope, our continuity, our vision and most importantly, the future of our dear country, Nigeria.

“Today, as we gather to celebrate our children, we call on our teeming students in FCT to rise against bullying and speak up whenever confronted with this radical menace.

“I urge you to avoid bullying and channel all your energy to academic resourcefulness to shape a better tomorrow for yourselves.” (NAN)

NIPC rallies states to compete, collaborate for investment economic revival

NIPC rallies states to compete, collaborate for investment economic revival

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) has called on sub-national governments to step up their roles in attracting and retaining investments.

According to the NIPC, this is a strategy to diversify Nigeria’s economy and restore investor confidence.

Ms Aisha Rimi, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NIPC, made the call in Benin, while speaking at a high-level stakeholder engagement with State Investment Promotion Agencies (SIPAs).

Rimi said that both domestic and foreign investments were critical to Nigeria’s economic recovery.

“Nigeria urgently needs to diversify its economy. We must industrialise, create jobs for our youthful population, grow what we eat, and develop our infrastructure.

“The answer is investment and the states are at the heart of this,” she told the stakeholders.

The NIPC boss noted that Nigeria’s investment drive would only succeed if states adopt proactive strategies and prioritise investors’ satisfaction, especially from local businesses, which she called “your biggest ambassadors.”

“The most powerful promotion is word of mouth. If your local investors are frustrated, that message spreads fast,” she said.

Rimi announced a new commission-led investment certification programme for states, designed to replicate its one-stop investment centre model at the sub-national level.

“Investors demand clarity, transparency, and ease of doing business. Our programme helps states build that ecosystem,” she explained.

She also said that competition among states could be a healthy force, but only if backed by capacity and credible investment data.

“We have had situations where states were sold based on potential but couldn’t back it up. Investors are smart, they do their homework,” she said.

She, however, praised the formation of the Forum of State Investment Promotion Agencies of Nigeria (FoSIPAN) as a key platform to harmonise state efforts and avoid duplication.

According to her, “FoSIPAN gives SIPAs a voice and a structure to work together for national growth.”

Declaring the meeting open, Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo, lauded the commission for selecting the state to host, as well as spotlight it as a model of reform.

Okpebholo, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, highlighted his administration’s drive to remove investment bottlenecks and improve the state’s business climate through legal and institutional reforms.

“We are building a foundation for investment-led growth.

“From our One-Stop Investment Centre to land reform under the Framework for Responsible and Inclusive Land-Intensive Agricultural Investment (FRILIA) framework, we are making it easier for businesses to start and scale,” he said.

The governor noted that security remained a top priority, with recent amendments to anti-kidnapping and anti-cultism laws aimed at protecting investments and lives under his SHINE (Security, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Agriculture, and Education) Agenda.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Mr Amen Odigie, Managing Director of the Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), said Edo was committed to “turning talk into action,” by leveraging the state’s strategic location, cultural heritage, and investor-focused reforms.

“Our goal is not just to attract capital, but to retain it and help it grow. We’re targeting agriculture, digital innovation, solid minerals, and tourism as key sectors for economic expansion,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that discussions at the forum focused on building technical capacity, addressing investment bottlenecks, and fostering investor-friendly environments tailored to each state’s comparative advantage.

The forum, themed “Strengthening Capacity, Promoting Collaboration, and Diversifying Nigeria’s Economy,” brought together government officials, SIPA heads, private sector players, and development partners committed to aligning strategies for transforming the country’s investment landscape. Kogi to launch intra-city bus service in Lokoja

Kogi State Government has announced that preparations are complete to commence operation of buses for intra-city transport to improve movement within the Lokoja metropolis.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Victor Atuluku, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja.

Atuluku said the intra-city transport service was expected to begin within the first week of June to ease residents’ mobility.

“This administration, led by Gov. Ahmed Ododo, is on top of this. The 2025 budget includes funds for acquiring brand new buses to serve this purpose.

“In the meantime, we are refurbishing some abandoned buses acquired during former Gov. Idris Wada’s administration.

“Those buses were previously unused because their engines were incompatible with their intended use, but we have installed new engines that are suitable and ready for service.

“I believe that within two weeks, these revamped buses will commence intra-city operations to boost movement within Lokoja before the arrival of the new buses,” Atuluku assured.

He also noted that the Confluence Express service currently operated fleets of buses running routes from Okene to Lagos, Kano, Jos, and some local government areas (LGA) within the state.

He said this included a recent extension to Ayingba Town in Dekina LGA.

Atuluku said Ododo was closely monitoring the Ministry of Transportation, as he did with all ministries, promising that residents would soon see significant improvements in transportation services.

Regarding the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses brought to Kogi by the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PICNG) in 2024, the commissioner explained that the buses were taken back by the initiative.

“These buses were handed over to the lead consultant, Mono Energy, responsible for their operations in Kogi, not directly to the state government.

“On the day the buses arrived, there was a launch event and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with PICNG for the Conversion Incentive Programme (CIP).

“This programme aims to convert 10,000 vehicles owned by members of National Union of Road Transport (NURTW), National Association of Transport Owners (NATO), and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to CNG free of charge.

“Sensitisation efforts are ongoing to encourage participation. The programme even benefits tricycle operators with four-plug engine vehicles,” he added.

On waterways transport, Atuluku stated that the government had received four boats from the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), to boost transportation in the riverine LGAs of the state. (NAN)(www.nannnews.ng)

Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger has inaugurated 20 level 2 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across 16 local government areas in the state.

Bago, while inaugurating the primary healthcare centres in Minna, said the 20 centres were part of phase one of a larger project to build 100 PHCs across the state.

He said that the inauguration marked a significant milestone in his administration’s quest to improve healthcare delivery in rural communities.

According to Bago, every individual has a stake in the new agenda, which prioritises access to quality healthcare.

He announced that the old PHCs would be reconstructed and upgraded to Level 2+, and one would be converted into the first Primary Healthcare Training Centre in Nigeria.

He expressed confidence in the progress made so far, saying, “within six months, we have been able to complete 20 out of 100 facilities, and the next phase will be delivered within four months.”

The governor announced that the best-performing PHC would be awarded N5 million monthly, aimed at encouraging competition among the centres to maintain facilities and provide quality healthcare services.

He also disclosed that some of the centres would be named after notable individuals, including the late Hajiya Zainab Yakubu Garba, the late Peter Sarki, and his wife, Hajiya Fatima Bago.

In his remarks, Dr Muyi Aina, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, described the projects as landmark achievements with exceptional standards.

Also, The Deputy National Coordinator and Head of Monitoring and Evaluation of NG-CARES, Abubakar Musa, said the facilities would be adopted in NG-CARES 2.0.

Also speaking, Mustapha Ndajiwo, Niger Commissioner for Budget and Planning, explained that the project aligned with the New Niger agenda of prioritising access to quality healthcare in communities.

He commended the governor’s commitment to delivering meaningful projects at the community level.

Dr Ibrahim Dangana, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare in Niger, commended the governor’s vision to provide affordable and qualitative healthcare across the state.

He said the facilities represent hope and would provide essential health services, bridging gaps in the health sector.

Dangana added that the centres would enhance capacity and build the skills of students from various schools of health technologies across the state. (NAN)

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has assented to 18 Executive Bills to strengthen the operations of the structured reforms introduced by the state to improve the people’s lives.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Okey Kanu, said this while briefing newsmen at the Government House, Umuahia on the outcome of the May Expanded Executive Council Meeting.

Kanu said that the administration’s second anniversary programmes included the ongoing inspection of projects by former Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti.

“The State Government has paid the counterpart fund of N3.5 billion as a requirement and support for six lots of roads for maintenance and five lots of grade roads across 10 LGAs in the state and three agro-logistics hubs.

“This is through the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Programme (RAAMP).

“So, the state has paid its counterpart funds and we expect that with a similar action from the World Bank, the project will kick off around the state and 10 or more LGAs will benefit,” he said.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state, Mr Ikechukwu Uwanna, said the 18 Executive Bills had increased the number of executive bills signed into law in the administration to 30.

Uwanna listed the major ones as the Abia Homeland Security Act, which had been updated to incorporate the creation of an effective Forest Guard as directed by President Bola Tinubu.

He also said that the Abia State Bonds Act was enacted to enable the state to raise funds at the capital market for development.

Uwanna also said that the Abia State Ombudsman and Public Complaints Commission had been officially established through an Act.

He said that the Abia State Estate Development Agency had been scrapped and its staff members absorbed by the Ministry of Lands.

According to him, the Umuahia Capital Development Agency, Abia Orientation Agency and Abia State Fire Service will no longer report to the governor.

“These agencies will now report to the Ministry of Lands, Ministry of Information and Ministry of Homeland Security, respectively,” he said.

The Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs Blessing Felix, said that the governor also assented to the Abia Senior Citizens’ Bill.

Felix said that, when operational, the Act would ensure that the welfare of every Abia citizen above 60 would be taken care of by the government. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Assuming office on Monday in Abuja, Gawuna pledged to align his efforts with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to improve financing and accessibility.

He stressed the need to raise public awareness about the bank’s role in addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit.

“Do Nigerians really know what FMBN is or what the laws governing it entail? We must make the bank visible and known to the people.

“The law establishing FMBN states that anyone above 18 earning up to N3,000 is eligible to be a contributor,” he said.

Gawuna highlighted the importance of reviewing some policies and laws governing the bank to ensure optimal performance and benefits for Nigerians.

“We live in a time of rapid change, great challenges, and immense opportunities. Our organisation is uniquely positioned to respond with innovation, resilience, and purpose,” he added.

As Board Chairman, he said his priority would be to promote a culture of collaboration, encouraging diverse perspectives, open dialogue, and bold thinking.

“We will listen carefully, act responsibly, and lead courageously to make a positive impact in the housing sector in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He also emphasised improving staff welfare to help deliver the bank’s mandate. “There is no reason we cannot improve the lives of our employees,” he said.

Earlier, FMBN Managing Director and CEO Shehu Osidi, welcomed the new chairman and lauded the executive management’s progress.

He noted the bank’s support for the Renewed Hope Housing programme, including providing a N100 billion off-taker guarantee to mobilise funding nationwide.

Osidi added that additional funding of N19.9 billion had been advanced for the Karsana project, alongside N27 billion for the Renewed Hope City in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, aimed at delivering 1,500 housing units.

He thanked President Tinubu for entrusting the bank with the responsibility and expressed optimism about the future of FMBN.

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) says it is entrenching the use of research, technology including drone, in boundary management

The Director-General, Mr Adamu Adaji, stated this on Sunday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the commission had advanced from analogue systems to digital and electronic systems in boundary management.

He said with the support of President Tinubu, the commission had made significant progress in managing Nigeria’s boundary issues.

“For those of us who are into the profession of mapping and surveying, we now know that we have advanced from the usual analog system to electronic system.

“Now, we have satellite imaging, aerial mappings and drones and with these modern technology, you can assess areas that ordinarily would have been difficult, if you were to go on foot.

“So, we’re really embracing technology,” he said.

He reiterated the commission’s commitment to tap into available technology to get adequate and real time data for efficient definition of boundaries.

The D-G also said that research was assisting significantly with data gathering to support the delineation of internal and international boundaries, including maritime boundaries.

He added that the commission’s Research and Policy Analysis Department was equipped to provide relevant data for decision making for effective management of the country’s boundaries.

“Going forward, we will capitalise on Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” to deepen the adoption of technology and research in the definition and demarcation of internal and international boundaries.

“This, in the long run, will bring the dividends of democracy to the people, especially those living in border communities

“We are going to emphasise on the physical definition of these boundaries, particularly those areas that we have resolved.

“Thank God, we have improved budgetary provisions that will enable us to double our efforts in boundary demarcation and organise workshops to sensitise people to how to manage boundaries,” he said.

Adaji further noted the difficulty in accessing some boundary locations, but expressed confidence that with modern technology, the commission would overcome some of the challenges. (NAN)

FCT ground rent: Tinubu grants 14-day grace to defaulters

FCT ground rent: Tinubu grants 14-day grace to defaulters

By Philip Yatai

President Bola Tinubu has given defaulters of ground rent in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) a 14-day grace period to pay outstanding ground rent and associated penalties.

Mr Chijoke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land, FCTA, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday.

Nwankwoeze explained that Tinubu’s intervention followed the vigorous enforcement of the takeover of 4,794 revoked properties in the FCT by the Administration.

The revoked properties owe the FCTA more than N6 billion in unpaid ground rent, with arrears ranging from 10 to 43 years.

Following the enforcement, which began on Monday, the FCTA sealed several properties including the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, Access Bank, and Federal Internal Revenue Service offices, all located in Wuse Zone 5.

Also sealed were the Chinese Cultural Centre, Ibro Hotel, Total Energy Petrol Station, Mamuda Group Warehouse, and the premises of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, also in Wuse.

The director said that properties owned by government institutions, corporate organisations, and individuals were affected, demonstrating the FCT Administration’s commitment to carrying out its duties without fear or favour.

Following Tinubu’s directive, holders of the affected properties now have 14 days to pay the outstanding ground rents along with penalties.

Nwankwoeze explained that defaulters in the Central Area must pay a penalty of N5 million in addition to their ground rent arrears.

“Those in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape districts will pay N3 million, while defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I, and Garki II will pay N2 million as penalties alongside their owed rents.”

He further urged individuals who purchased properties but had not yet registered their ownership by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering their Deeds of Assignment to do so within 14 days.

Affected property owners were advised to visit the FCT Department of Land Administration to complete registration by obtaining the required Minister’s Consent.

Nwankwoeze also announced that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had given a similar 14-day grace period for all property holders to pay their Right of Occupancy or Certificate of Occupancy bills, warning that failure to do so might result in revocation.

“Going forward, the minister has advised all property owners in the FCT to ensure timely payment of all necessary bills and charges.

“This will enable the government to continue carrying out vital developmental projects for the benefit of the people,” he said. (NAN)

NBC making progress in resolving Nigeria-Benin boundary dispute – D-G

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) says it has made significant progress in resolving the Nigeria-Benin international boundary dispute.

The Director-General of the commission, Mr Adamu Adaji, stated this on Sunday in Abuja, while assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration after two years in office.

Adaji said that the commission had reactivated intervention on the boundary which was at some point stalled by the Benin Republic as far back as 2012.

He, however, said that the commission had been able to get the Benin team back to the discussion table for a quick resolution of the dispute.

“We are in the process of trying to resolve the different positions of the disputed areas with respect to the southern sector, which is the Ajara River sector and also the northern sector, which is the Ilo-Borogu sector,” he said.

He added that a joint committee had been set up to revisit the areas, search for more documents, and involve experts to help interpret some of the documents.

He explained that the disagreement stemmed from the different understanding of the description of the boundary in the two sectors.

The D-G said that in the Ilo-Borogu sector, which involves the states of Kwara, Niger up to Kebbi, the issue involved the use of legal instruments.

He said that the confusion was between the treaty of 1906 and the later description of 1960.

“We tend to differ, but we have agreed that we are going to study the two documents critically and see what we as Nigeria can make of the two documents.

“The idea is to determine which one of the two will be more beneficial to Nigeria because the interest of Nigeria is always apparent in our operations and activities,” he said.

In the case of Ajara River, Adaji said the two countries disagree on which channel of the river to use.

He said that the Benin Republic was laying claim to a particular channel, while Nigerian was also laying claim to a different channel.

“We are going to look at the documents critically, if need be, explore the colonial administration’s archives to see which of the two documents is really the correct one to define the boundary,” he said.

Speaking on challenges, the NBC boss said: “We’ve had instances where political will on the part of some governments have been quite discouraging.

“It is very disappointing when we reached agreements and resolutions but some of the governments concerned lack the political will to enforce them”. (NAN)

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has inaugurated the Ministerial Committee on Technical Assessment, Completion Planning, and Disposal Strategy for 753-units Housing Estate.

Dangiwa, while inaugurating the committee, on Monday in Abuja, said the estate was recently recovered and handed over to the ministry by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He commended the EFCC for the critical intervention which has now created a unique opportunity for the Federal Government to convert what was once a symbol of public sector inefficiency and abuse into a beacon of public service and national renewal.

“In line with the vision of the President and the housing reform drive of our ministry, this committee has been constituted to ensure that the recovered property is quickly transformed into liveable, secure, and affordable homes for the benefit of Nigerians.

“This is not just another government assignment. It is a mission to deliver value, hope and homes.

“I, therefore, carefully approve the constitution of this high-level Ministerial Committee made up of management staff and strategic officers drawn from key departments of the ministry.

“They are to ensure we bring to bear the highest level of technical competence, integrity and urgency,” he said.

Dangiwa said the committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, and supported by directors and special advisers, were selected because of the confidence the ministry has in their capacity to drive the initiative with the seriousness and efficiency it demands.

He said the terms of reference for the committee included: to conduct a thorough structural and integrity test of the buildings; to ascertain the number and status of the housing units; and to evaluate the value of existing work done through proper surveying and market valuation.

He added that the committee would assess the cost of completing internal roads, power, water, security infrastructure, public amenities and develop standardised architectural and finishing guides for consistency and quality assurance.

The minister said the committee would also propose a clear, transparent, and inclusive strategy for the disposal and allocation of the housing units, prioritising special government needs, affordability, equity, and public access through the Renewed Hope Housing Portal.

He said they would also design a robust communication and public engagement plan that builds public confidence and ensure inter-agency coordination with stakeholders like EFCC, FCTA, and utility providers.

Dangiwa urged them to submit a preliminary report within four weeks from today.

“Let me state unequivocally that Nigerians are watching. They want to see results. They want to see homes built and allocated transparently. They want to see government working for them.

“This recovered estate must serve as a reference point of what is possible when public institutions work in synergy for the people.

“I charge you all to approach this assignment with urgency, dedication, and integrity. Work as a team. Eliminate bureaucracy. Think outside the box. Be result-oriented. And let us deliver a completed housing estate,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the committee, Chairman of the Committee and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, pledged to carry out the duty with transparency and diligence.

Belgore said the successful execution of the assignment would serve as a model for converting recovered public assets into impactful infrastructure that directly benefits the people. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
