The House of Representatives Committee on Works has expressed satisfaction with the Shoreline Protection project implementation at Marina in Lagos State.
The committee described the project as a crucial intervention.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr Akin Alabi, gave the project a “passmark” during an inspection on Monday.
He noted the importance of the project  in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
Alabi specifically highlighted that the completed work would protect the Blue Line Rail of Lagos State and the Outer Marina Road.
He urged the contractor to ensure the project would be completed swiftly.
“As you have heard, the last time this was done was over 40 years ago since it was put there.
“Because of lack of maintenance culture, there has not been subsequent maintenance, and we have got to this point where there has to be an intervention, else we are going to lose a lot of assets on this road,” Alabi said.
He commended the Federal Ministry of Works, under the leadership of the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, for prioritising the project.
He also acknowledged the diligent work of the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha.
On her part, Kesha explained that the Shoreline Protection project was 30 per cent completed and was designed to secure the road and the Blue Line Rail for at least the next 25 years.
She said: “As of the moment, the percentage of permanent work that has been completed is about 30 per cent; so, it has about 70 per cent more to go, and it still has time on its side.”
She emphasised the high quality of work being done, explaining the reinforcement strategy involving the existing and new concrete sheet piles to enhance the shoreline’s resilience.
“The quality of work here is top-notch. There is no compromise here.
“You can see that the existing sheet piles gave way. That was why we need to do another one, and we are not doing away with the old one, which are the metal ones that we saw.
“We are doing another concrete behind it, and then we are connecting the two so that there is more rigidity, more connection between the old and the new. Then, this shoreline can be protected,” she said.
Kesha emphasised the long-term benefits of the project, saying that non-protection of the Outer Marina Road would make erosion to catch up with it in the next five to 10 years.
“With what we are doing here now, the lifespan of this road has increased by more than 25 years; so in the next 25 years, the investment of Lagos State as part of the Blue Line Rail—we will protect it. That is the whole essence of this.”
After inspecting the shoreline protection, the House of Representatives Committee on Works inspected the security infrastructure installed under the Third Mainland Bridge.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 24-hour surveillance facility covers the stretch from Oworonshoki to Falomo Bridge.
Alabi lauded the contractor and the Federal Ministry of Works for the initiative, describing it as a strategic move to significantly reduce crime in the area.
He affirmed that the project demonstrated the responsible use of funds appropriated by the parliament.
“This is what we like to see. When parliament appropriates money, we want to see the results of the money we appropriated so that when you come back for more, we won’t have a reason to deny you,” Alabi said.
He conveyed the support of the Speaker of the House, Mr Abbas Tajudeen.
“I am here speaking with the mandate of the Speaker, Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, GCON, to ascertain the level of work here, and I have zero complaint.”
Alabi urged speedy completion of the remaining aspects of the security infrastructure, noting its potential impact on curbing criminal activities.
“That little part remaining, please do it as soon as possible.
“The bandits, the thieves, the terrible people  – the bad people – they know that that part has not been done; so, they might want to concentrate their theft and illegal activities on that side.
“The earlier we complete it, the better. This is definitely going to reduce crime by a large percentage,” he said.
Responfing, Kesha reiterated that the security infrastructure was an integral part of the ongoing upgrade of the Third Mainland Bridge, which was nearing completion. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Plateau Government has commenced the distribution of relief materials to windstorm victims in six local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

The materials distributed include roofing sheets, nails, wood, among others.

Plateau Deputy Governor, Mrs Josephine Piyo, who flagged off the distribution of the materials, said it was part of the government’s social contract with its citizens to provide support and to offer a helping hand to those affected by this disaster.

Piyo further said that the gesture portrayed the Plateau government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.

“This exercise is in line with Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration to prioritise the welfare of the good people of the state by ensuring that their rights to security and protection are ensured.

“It is a demonstration that the government is with the people, and we will do everything in our power to alleviate their suffering and help them rebuild their lives,” she said.

Earlier, Mr Sunday Abdu, Executive Secretary (ES), Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA), commended the government for its swift and decisive action in providing the relief materials and portrayed the government’s compassionate concern for those affected.

Abdu further said that the gesture wasn’t just to alleviate the immediate suffering of the people but also to rebuild their lives and restore their livelihoods.

The executive secretary said that relief materials would provide the much-needed succour and pave way for the affected communities to rebuild and thrive.

The ES listed the six local governments to benefit from the first phase of the intervention as Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Mangu, Wase and Langtang North.

He announced that the agency would also distribute liquid fertilisers to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state to enable them to plant during the rainy season.

According to him, 2000 households in each of the benefitting LGAs (Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Riyom and Bokkos) would get 3000 units of litre gel liquid fertilisers.

Similarly, Mr Adebiyi Razaq, North Central Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), commended the state government for assisting the windstorm victims.

Razaq said that NEMA also brought food and non-food materials to be distributed to the victims.

The zonal coordinator stated that the NEMA Director General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, was committed to alleviating the sufferings of victims of all forms of disasters. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has rated Enugu State as the safest state in the South-East.

President of the organisation, Ugochukwu Nnam, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Nnam said that the rating was precipitated by his assessment visit to the state recently which was not only satisfactory but “glaring for the blind to see”.

“The Enugu Security Trust Fund, which aims to raise more than N20 billion, is doing wonders in the security of lives and property.

“Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) are extensively installed almost everywhere in Enugu in thousands with cameras equipped with facial recognition and vehicle identification systems,” he said.

Nnam, who commended the governor of the state for restoring confidence of the people, challenged other governors to replicate the Enugu system in their states.

According to him, such technological approach, which is far from conventional security method will improve surveillance across the state.

The CSO President also lauded the governor for introducing the “Enugu Safe City” project.

Nnam described the project as the first of its kind in not just the South-East but Nigeria, designed to enhance the security architecture of the state.

He said that the essence of the project was to provide effective communication and surveillance systems that allow for timely response to security situations across the state.

Nnam said the project would go a long way in boosting the operational capacity of security personnel in the state, as well as ensuring efficient crime prevention and detection.

He asserted that Gov. Peter Mbah had ultimately made Enugu a model for technology-driven security management. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Chapter, came out in large numbers on Saturday for a road walk to mark World Press Freedom Day 2025.

The road walk, tagged ‘Freedom Walk’, was led by the chapter’s chairperson, Ms Archibong Bassey, who rallied journalists in a peaceful procession across Calabar.

Participants held placards with messages like ‘The Nigerian Media Deserves Freedom, Not Fear’ and ‘No True Democracy Without a Free Press’.

Other placards read ‘Fake News Thrives When the Press is Gagged’, underscoring the call for media independence and ethical journalism.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, is observed annually on May 3.

It honours press freedom and pays tribute to journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties.

The 2025 theme is ‘Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media’.

Ms Bassey urged all tiers of government to ensure a safe and supportive environment for media professionals to operate effectively.

She emphasised the importance of an unfettered press, stating that societal ills flourish when journalists are silenced or restricted.

Bassey also highlighted the mutual responsibility between the press and society in safeguarding truth and accountability.

She called on journalists to remain focused, in spite of distractions, and uphold truth as a fundamental value of the profession.

As part of the Freedom Walk, journalists visited the Mother Elizabeth Redeemed Orphanage and the Medium Security Prison, Afokang.

They donated food and toiletries to both the orphanage and inmates as part of the day’s outreach efforts.

Mr Nsa Gil, Chief Press Secretary to Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, addressed the press during the event.

He cautioned journalists against premature politicking, stressing that the current focus should be on governance, not elections.

Gil urged media practitioners to embrace evolving tools, especially Artificial Intelligence, to enhance their reporting skills.

He noted that while AI can support journalism, it must not replace core journalistic values or ethical practices.

“It is wrong to copy and paste AI content without verification. Journalism still demands accuracy and accountability,” he added.

Gil appealed for accurate media coverage, announcing that the state government will soon present its two-year performance report. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

An NGO, Debbie Kauna Foundation (DKF), on Saturday empowered no fewer than 306 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) with business start-up kits in Adamawa.

Dr Olaniyi Aderibigbe, Project Analyst, UN Women, disclosed this at the completion of three months vocational training for the participants from Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas of Adamawa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by DKF, with funding from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) and technical support from the UN Women Nigeria.

Aderibigbe said the beneficiaries were selected based on their vulnerability and potential for growth.

“Michika and Madagali LGAs were selected because of the high number of displaced women and girls with disabilities.

“We empowered 253 women and 53 men including young girls and boys aimed at promoting protection, dignity and economic empowerment for the PwDs.

“The women were not only trained but also paired with mentors to ensure they stay on track after receiving their kits.

“We want them to be resilient and support themselves and their families,” he said.

Mrs Deborah Bubwa, Founder DKF, said the women were allowed to pick the skills they found most practical in their local environment.

“Each woman told us what they could do without stress and what would sell in their community.

“Each beneficiary was trained in a skill of her choice including tailoring, backyard gardening, poultry farming.

“Others are tie and dye, shoemaking, rice processing and livestock management,” she said.

Bubwa said the foundation’s team spent six weeks moving from house to house across the two LGAs to identify and profile the right beneficiaries.

She said after the screening exercise, the women received entrepreneurship training with a focus on accessing micro-loans and managing small businesses.

The start-up kits, according to Bubwa, are free grants under the NHF, adding that the foundation opened bank accounts for each of the beneficiaries.

She said each of the beneficiaries were assigned mentors, trained for three months and would continue to receive the needed support.

“Our mission is to empower women and girls with disabilities so they can stop begging and start living dignified lives like everyone else,” she said.

Hauwa Vandu, a beneficiary from Shuwa, in Madagali LGA, praised the foundation for such a rare opportunity, saying the training had changed her life tremendously.

“I used to think nobody saw me. Now I know I matter, and am happy that despite my disability I can live a productive life,” she said.

Highlight of the event was distribution of start-up kits for the beneficiaries. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo has raised the minimum wage for Edo workers from N70,000 to N75,000 to further improve their standard of living.

The governor announced this during his May Day speech at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

The governor, while appreciating Edo workers’ contributions to the state’s development, said his administration would always look for ways to improve the welfare of Edo workers.

“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for all Edo workers.

“It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers. We believe this makes a real difference, and we count on your dedication to a better Edo.

“Since taking office, my administration has prioritised workers’ welfare.

“One early action was converting over 1,000 casual workers, including cleaners, into permanent civil service employees,” he said.

Okpebholo disclosed that his administration had also hired 500 teachers, adding that he was reviewing over 3,000 casual teachers for full employment.

“We also approved recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical hospital staff and regularised 126 contract workers at Edo State Specialist Hospital for stability and growth,” he added.

The governor also disclosed that his administration had cleared outstanding salary arrears owed to Edo Polytechnic staff.

“In the judiciary, judges whose appointments were delayed have been properly sworn in and are now actively performing their constitutional duties without further administrative hindrances.

“To prove our commitment, we approved health insurance for retirees because we believe support must continue after workers leave active service,” the governor said.

Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s dedication to prompt salary and pension payments, structured recruitment, workers’ welfare and professional development.

“As we celebrate today, I join President Tinubu and fellow governors in wishing Nigerian workers a peaceful, fulfilling celebration. Your efforts build our nation daily.”

Acting NLC Chairman, Edo Chapter, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, praised Governor Okpebholo for laudable policies that ease the hardship experienced by workers and pensioners across the state.

He said the theme, “Reclaiming the Civil Space Amid Economic Hardship,” was appropriate and highlighted the critical issues faced by Nigerian workers in today’s tough economy.

Egwekhide appreciated the governor’s seriousness towards workers’ welfare, noting that recent interventions had significantly improved the lives and civil rights of Edo workers.

“Within six months in office, you have performed excellently for Edo workers. Your achievements surpass our expectations and show real commitment to the needs of workers.

“We also thank President Bola Tinubu for supporting Edo State. The first flyover is under construction, and a second has already been approved for development.

“Additionally, federal roads across the state are now receiving the urgent attention they have long needed, thanks to the partnership with the Federal Government,” Egwekhide said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
