Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State says his administration has embarked on comprehensive reforms aimed at revitalising the civil service, pension management, and institutionalising continuous training for workers.

Yusuf disclosed this on Thursday in his address at the May Day celebration held at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

He described the celebration as a tribute to the historic struggle for workers’ rights, dignity, and justice, noting that the day goes beyond a public holiday.

“Today is not merely a public holiday; it is a day rooted in sacrifice and the pursuit of justice, equity, and the dignity of labour,” he said.

The governor recalled that Kano was the first state to host an official May Day event in 1980, under the late Gov. Abubakar Rimi, and pledged to sustain that legacy through policies focused on the welfare of workers.

Yusuf announced that the state government had adopted a new minimum wage of ₦71,000 for civil servants, placing Kano among the first states in the country to implement such a wage increase.

“Through deliberate and determined efforts, we have ensured that the new minimum wage in Kano State now stands at ₦71,000. This step is critical in boosting morale, reducing economic hardship, and enhancing productivity,” he said.

The governor highlighted key initiatives targeting the revitalisation of the civil service, including institutionalising regular training and capacity building through workshops and partnerships with institutions such as the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

“These efforts are part of our broader strategy to modernise administrative processes and ensure that civil servants are equipped with the skills needed to meet contemporary governance demands,” Yusuf said.

He stated that his administration is also reviewing critical operational documents such as the Civil Service Rules, Financial Instructions, and the Scheme of Service to bring them in line with best practices.

According to him, the reforms are expected to improve productivity, enhance discipline, and streamline service delivery across government ministries, departments, and agencies.

The governor said similar reforms were being introduced in the pension system to ensure timely and equitable payments to retirees.

“Pension reform is not just an administrative task; it is a moral obligation to those who have served the state with honour,” he said.

Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, professionalism, and the welfare of civil servants and pensioners, describing them as central to the success of government operations.

The organised labour union in Kogi has urged Gov. Ahmed Ododo to address the perennial water scarcity in Lokoja by urgently restoring the Lokoja Greater Water Works to meet the ever-increasing demand.

The state Council Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Gabriel Amari, and that of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ahmed Tijani, made the appeal during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration on Thursday in Lokoja.

Amari, who spoke on behalf of workers said, “We wish to commend your effort in reviving the Old Lokoja Water Works within a record time.

“However, the scale of treatment and reticulation from the Old Lokoja Water Works cannot meet even one-tenth of the entire water demand in Lokoja metropolis.

“Sir, water scarcity adversely affects the productivity of workers. The daily search for water has pushed residents to rely on untreated sources, thereby exposing them to waterborne diseases and other health-related risks.

“Moreover, in their quest for water, the indiscriminate drilling of boreholes has depleted the basement aquifer to an alarming level, which poses a serious threat to future generations.

“To solve the perennial water scarcity in Lokoja, there is an urgent need to repair and restore the Lokoja Greater Water Works to meet the ever-increasing demand.

“Your Excellency, you are known as a jinx-breaker, and we believe you can finally break the infamous jinx of “water, water everywhere in Lokoja, but not a drop to drink.”

The workers also appealed to the governor to make efforts towards offsetting the accumulated gratuity to ameliorate the plight of the affected retirees in the state.

“We are not unmindful of the state government’s efforts in addressing critical areas that affect the retirees.

“We are also concerned about their fate in view of their plight having dedicated the greater part of their youthful years towards the development of the state, with nothing to fall back to after retirement, safe for hope.

The unions also drew the governor’s attention to the need for the implementation of outstanding promotion, in some cases up to six years with cash backing including incremental rates.

“This will usher in a more result-oriented civil service to effectively implement government planned policies and programmes,” he said.

The unions, however, praised the Ododo administration’s giant strides since assumption of office in all facets of the economy, ranging from infrastructural development, human capital development, agriculture and health sub-sector, amongst others.

The unions also commended the governor for prompt implementation of the new national minimum wage, timely and regular payment of salaries, pensions harmonisation, workers’ training and re-training, as well as appointment of labour leaders in his administration.

In his remarks, Ododo commended the organised labour for their unwavering commitment to the development of the state and the nation at large, saying they are the engine room of economic development.

The governor assured the union of his administration’s commitment to prioritise workers welfare.

This, he said, was a testament to the immediate implementation of the national minimum wage, prompt payment of salaries, as well as the one year tax free policy on the minimum wage.

Ododo noted that his administration, on assumption of office, had been releasing N100 million monthly for gratuity, saying N1.2 billion had been released in one year for payment of backlog of gratuity to give the much-needed relief to the retirees.

He promised to promptly review all the requests of the labour unions for consideration and implementation for the benefit of the people of Kogi. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called for greater press freedom and better working conditions for journalists.

NUJ FCT Chairperson, Grace Ike, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja.
Ike emphasised that press freedom was a non-negotiable right, not a privilege, and commended journalists for their invaluable contributions to society.
She urged the government to prioritise press freedom and workers’ welfare, addressing challenges such as insecurity and economic hardship.
The NUJ FCT Chairperson tasked journalists to continue promoting ethical journalism, championing better working conditions, and holding leaders accountable.
She emphasised the media’s vital role in speaking out, defending press freedom, and protecting vulnerable voices.
Ike highlighted the struggles workers face due to the current economic situation, including rising costs of living, insecurity, and limited opportunities.
She called on all sectors to support workers by creating better working environments and urged workers to remain united and steadfast.
As the first woman to lead the NUJ FCT Council, Ike appealed for unity and action among workers, urging the government and employers to stand by workers and invest in their well-being.

“Workers’ Day is not just a time to honour the value of work, but also a time to recommit ourselves to protecting the civic space, where every voice matters, truth is defended, and rights are respected,” she said.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State Council, says the state-owned tertiary institutions, judiciary and some ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) are yet to receive the new minimum wage.

Chairman of the Council, Mr Kayode Martins, stated this during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration in Ibadan on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the celebration is “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardships,”.

Martins although said Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo had approved N80,000 as minimum wage in the state which have been paid to some workers.

He, however, noted that such approval of N80,000 minimum wage requires the increment of subvention for some MDAs, state-owned tertiary institutions and the judiciary for them to be able to pay the new wage.

“As we are talking, some MDAs, judiciary and state tertiary institutions are finding it difficult to pay the increment in salary, as a result of the approval of N80,000 as new minimum wage, even the retirees have not been enjoying it too.

“We want the state government and other authorities to take note of this and act on it” he said.

Martins, however, appreciated the Oyo State government for paying N80,000 minimum wages, an amount higher than the one approved by the Federal Government for workers.

He further said that the new minimum wage was no longer enough for workers due to some policies of the government which had caused hardship to the workers and citizens.

The Chairman said that the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration was to call the attention of the Federal Government to the hardship faced by workers and citizens in the country.

Also speaking, Oyo State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro, said the organised unions in the country would not relent in fighting for the rights of workers and citizens in the country.

He called on government at all levels to prioritise education, welfare and protection of citizens.

Olabiyi-Agoro said the union would not act as antagonists to favourable policies of government and would continue to provide useful advice to the government.

The Secretary of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, Dr Olusegun Abatan, commended Gov. Makinde for approving the review of pension in the state.

Abatan said that the review had placed the pensioners in Oyo State as one of the highest paid among pensioners in Nigeria.

Speaking, Gov. Makinde, represented by his Deputy, Adebayo Lawal, pledged the commitment of government to the welfare of workers in the state and promised not to marginalise them in the scheme of things.

Makinde, who reeled out his achievements to workers since assuming office to include prompt payment of salary, promotions, among others, said government would continue to support and create conducive environment for workers to discharge their duties effectively.

“We are committed to eliminating promotion backlog of workers and ensure workers are given their due,” he said.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Gombe State Council, has urged the state governor, Inuwa Yahaya, to ensure the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers in the state.

Its Chairman, Mr Yusuf Bello, made the demand while delivering his speech on Thursday at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe, during the commemoration of the 2025 Workers’ Day in the state.

Bello said the appeal became necessary given the economic situation in the country which was affecting all workers, irrespective of levels.

He said it had become a concern that should be considered as it was the right of the LG workers to enjoy the new wage.

“While we sincerely commend your unwavering commitment and strong political will in advancing the development of our beloved state, we feel compelled to bring a few pressing issues to your attention.

“We are confident that, true to your characteristic determination, enthusiasm, and dedication, Your Excellency will consider these concerns with the aim of finding lasting solutions.

“Effective implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers is essential, as it is a rightful entitlement.

“They endure the same economic challenges as their counterparts in the state workforce and should be treated accordingly,” he said.

Bello also appealed for an upward review in the monthly pensions of retirees at both the state and local government levels to help retirees cope with the rising cost of living.

He further advised the state government to recruit additional personnel or consider transferring manpower from the local government to the state civil service.

He emphasised that such would help in addressing the gap created in the state civil service as a result of retirements, transfers, and voluntary withdrawals from service.

Bello commended the Yahaya-led administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the state while assuring the state government of the council’s support in achieving the desired goals of governance.

On his part, the State Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, said that the Yahaya-led administration had demonstrated commitment to the welfare and well-being of workers in the state.

Jatau said the prompt payment of salaries and the fact that the state was among the first states to implement the national minimum wage showed the commitment of the state government to the welfare of workers.

Responding to the demands by NLC, Jatau said, “I wish to assure you that all these will be looked into.

The Senior Special Assistant to Lagos Governor on Transportation, Mr Toyin Aremu, says more than 600 drivers and conductors benefited from the EcoMove Lagos medical outreach.

Aremu said this in an interview with newsmen at the sideline of the EcoMove Lagos grand finale and award presentation on Wednesday.

He said the drivers and conductors were urged to prioritise their health during the medical outreach because health is wealth.

“The first day was the clean-up of mechanical villages in Lagos and this was done simultaneously.

“We have more than 100 mechanic villages in Lagos and clean ups were done simultaneously to reduce environmental hazard and emission and it will be a continuous effort.

“The government told the mechanics to make sure that it is a continuous effort.

“Together, we are partnering with them because we believe they are the integral part and key stakeholders when it comes to issue of transportation,” he said.

He added that the movement toured Lagos to experience the waterways through the Lagos State Ferry Services, rail and Bus Rapid Transit buses.

“This showcases the heritage of Lagos, what the state stands for as the second largest economy in Africa.

“The take home for Lagos residents is to ensure that government infrastructure is protected, take ownership of them because it is meant for their use, make sure the environment is clean and hygiene for people to move around,” he said.

Earlier, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the state government was intentional in adopting an affordable and sustainable transport system due to the size of the state.

“Lagos is the smallest state in terms of land size and one third of the land mass is covered by water.

“Lagos State has introduced the Omi-Eko project which will see to the dredging of the waterways and introduction of electric vessels.

“The state is going green, and this will be done in a sustainable manner. 50/100 electric buses are coming in, 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas are also coming in.

“The more buses we have, the less cars on the road and this will reduce emissions,” he said.

Also, the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi, noted that transportation distance one covers contribute to quality of life.

He added that all activities in life had significant impact on the environment and so the need to make the environment eco-friendly.

“We need the environment to survive and have quality of life,” he said.
Ajayi added that LASEPA and the Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service had partnered for greener mobility.

Also, the Commissioner for Transportation, Ekiti State, Mr Kehinde Ajobiewe, said the theme of the event showed the urgency for leaders and policy makers to ensure transport system impacts positively on the environment.

Organised Labour has appealed to the Federal Government not to compress the civic space by restricting citizens from freely expressing themselves.

Mr Joe Ajaero, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja, at the 2025 Pre–May Day Lecture, organised by the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the lecture has the theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”.

Ajaero stressed the need for government to open up the civil space to enable workers and unions to freely express themselves in line with democracy tenets.

He assured that the labour movement would continue to talk truth to power and fight for the rights of Nigerians.

Prof. Christopher Chukwuma from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, while delivering the keynote address, called for the review of laws restricting, criminalising civic engagements in the country.

Chukwuma, a Professor of International Law, said it was imperative to review the Cybercrime Act and the Public Order Act, which, according to him, are restricting and criminalising civic engagement.

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), in collaboration with other development partners, has unveiled the revised 2025 National Migration Policy to address the evolving migration challenges in the country.

During the unveiling on Tuesday in Abuja, the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Mr Tijani Ahmed, emphasised that the policy aimed to strike a balance between the opportunities and risks associated with migration.

Ahmed explained that the revised policy would ensure Nigerian migration practices aligned with global standards, such as the UN’s Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, reflecting the country’s commitment to international migration frameworks.

“This update marks a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s migration governance, especially with the validation of the 2025 National Migration Policy.

“The policy, first adopted in 2015, has now been updated to address emerging migration realities, including economic shifts, conflict-driven displacement, and human trafficking.

“The review process was led by the NCFRMI and involved a 19-member Policy Review Committee, representing government agencies, civil society, academia, and international partners.

“The updated policy also responds to new challenges and is designed to offer practical solutions, ensuring its effectiveness in managing migration,” Ahmed stated.

Ahmed noted the importance of the integrated approach, which ensured that Nigeria’s policy was not only locally relevant but also aligned with global migration governance standards.

In his remarks, Dr Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, highlighted the policy’s focus on addressing the loss of skilled professionals, especially in healthcare.

Sununu stated that the policy would encourage “brain circulation” through partnerships between Nigerian and international universities.

“More than 1.4 million Nigerians have emigrated in recent years, with 51 per cent of them holding tertiary education credentials.

“Initiatives like transnational education agreements aim to retain academic and medical talent while fostering knowledge exchange,” he said.

Sununu further noted that the revised policy reflected Nigeria’s commitment to proactive migration management amid a rapidly changing global landscape.

“Once approved by the Federal Executive Council, the policy will see state governments, civil society, and international partners working together under a coordinated strategy.

“Education on the risks of irregular migration is crucial, as this has contributed to insecurity within the country.

“The document provides a holistic approach to addressing these issues and, when fully implemented, should significantly reduce irregular migration,” Sununu emphasised.

Sununu also touched on ongoing agricultural empowerment initiatives for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and partnerships aimed at delivering essential services such as healthcare and education.

He commended the NCFRMI’s leadership and the contributions of all stakeholders, stressing the government’s readiness to present the revised policy for adoption by the Federal Executive Council.

He underscored the importance of collaboration at all levels to ensure a coordinated, rights-based approach to migration, reintegration, and poverty reduction in Nigeria. (NAN)

Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa has restated commitment to ensure safe and healthy work environment in the state.
He said this during a courtesy visit by the management team of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSIT), in Dutse.
The visit was part of activities to mark the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health.
The theme of the Day for 2025 is: “Revolutionising Health Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work.”
It focused on the impact of digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on workers’ health and safety.
Represented by Muhammad Dagaceri, the state Head of Service, Namadi said that ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the citizens was critical to his administration’s 12-point agenda.
He said the state would partner the fund to bolster safety measures in work places.
Mr Fateh Abdulkadir, the Jigawa Branch Manager of the fund, said the day was established by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to promote awareness on the prevention of workplace accidents and diseases on a global scale.
He, therefore, sought for collaboration between the state and the fund, to enhance safety initiatives in the state.

Highlight of the event included a practical demonstration on effective fire incident management by the Federal Fire Service unit in the state.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has called on governments, employers to harness technology including Artificial Intelligence, to create safer, healthier workplaces for workers across the globe.

Mr Gilbert Houngbo, the Director-General of ILO, said this in a message to mark the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, in Abuja.

Houngbo said this was imperative while ensuring that the innovation would protect workers’ rights and well-being.

“Every worker, everywhere, has the right to a safe and healthy working environment. This is a fundamental right.

“And yet millions of workers around the world continue to die or injured themselves or fall sick because of work.

“Many lose their lives trying to earn a living. We must change this.

“The use of technology for good can help us to make important strides. Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies can help transform the workplace into a safer and healthier space,” he said.

He said that robotics, automation could operate in hazardous environments and take on the dangerous tasks such as the operation of extreme temperatures, handling toxic materials, or navigating disaster zones.

He added that they could also ease physical strain, supporting caregivers in hospitals, assisting with heavy lifting in construction, and reducing repetitive work in factories.

He said that smart sensors and digital monitoring could detect risks before accidents happen by checking air quality tracking, fatigue or alerting to unsafe movement and behaviours.

“But innovation can also carry significant risks. The rise of worker surveillance and algorithm management can threaten workers’ rights, dignity, and well-being.

“New technologies can also introduce new risks that are not yet fully understood.

“We have a responsibility to understand safety and health risks that come with technological innovation. We have a responsibility to ensure that technology is used for good.

“That is why the digital transition must be human-centred. It must make workplace safer and healthier and more sustainable and inclusive.

“On this World Day for Safety and Health at Work, I call on governments, employers, workers and innovators to build a future of work that is not only smarter, but also safer and healthier,” he said.

Also, Vanessa Phala, ILO Country Director to Nigeria told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Federal Government had taken bold step to ratify all the conventions that were related to occupational safety and health.

“We have also been collaborating with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to support the development of legislation, frameworks that will ensure that we are moving forward.

“We will ensure that we are translating the conventions into national policies and national frameworks,” she said.

Phala added that it was the responsibility of the employers and everyone to make sure that they provided the safety that all workers required to be productive and to be able to conduct their work safely. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
