Wike assures CDS of FCTA’s support to curb insecurity

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has promised Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, of FCT Administration’s support to curb insecurity in the nation.

Wike, who made the pledge when the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) visited him in Abuja on Friday, acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Nigerian military to keep Nigeria safe.

He assured Musa of FCTA’s support in whatever form, to improve the security situation in the country and maintain the territorial integrity of the nation.

“Do not hesitate to tell us whatever support you need from the FCT,” he said.

He said that the National Assembly had passed the 2024 FCT Statutory Budget, adding that a provision was made in the budget for the procurement of drones for security agencies.

This, according to him, will support security agencies to win the ongoing war against all forms of insecurity, particularly in the FCT.

“The budget of FCT has been passed by the National Assembly.

“We have made provisions in the budget to buy drones to help security agencies in their efforts to reduce the level of crime in the whole of FCT.

“We are providing logistics to the security agencies and in the next few days, patrol vehicles and the communication gadgets for the security agencies will be ready.

“What we are also trying to do is to build an FCT Rapid Response Centre that will be managed by a joint team of the military, the police, Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

The minister said that the centre would be equipped with every form of technology to strengthen the fight against insecurity.

He condoled with the families of the Nigerian military over the incident in Delta that left several military personnel dead.

Describing the incident as barbaric, Wike said: “We as FCT, we will support the Nigerian military in whichever way we can.

“Let’s see what we can do to reduce the pains of the families.”

Earlier, the CDS explained that the visit was to commend Wike for the transformation taking place in the FCT within the short time of being in office as FCT minister.

He equally assured the minister the support of the members of the Armed Forces in whatever way.

He reminded the minister that the armed forces were duty bound to protect Nigerians and defend Nigeria and would not infringe on the rights of the people.

On the menace of one chance, kidnappings and other forms of criminalities, Musa said that he had set up a committee to see how to support ongoing response.

He promised to support the Nigerian Police with ground and air troops in their efforts to maintain peace.

“We are looking at how we can assist the police in responding to acts of criminality.

“What we are trying to do is to build a force that will be on standby 24/7, in case there’s anything happening, we can provide additional support to the police,” he said. (NAN)

NiMet to deepen efforts towards building climate-resilient society

NiMet to deepen efforts towards building climate-resilient society

By Gabriel Agbeja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) says it will intensify efforts toward building a climate – resilient society in the country.

NiMet Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, made this known on Thursday in Abuja during a celebration of the 2024 World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Day.

According to him, such efforts will advance the nation towards tackling the effects of climate change in the country.

He said the agency recognised the indispensable role of meteorology in building a sustainably developed society from providing accurate weather forecasts to mitigating the impacts of natural disasters as well as building climate resilient societies.

“ NiMet remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and livelihood across the country through its extensive network of observation stations, research and training facilities, forecasting capabilities and in pursuit of early warning for all.

“We keep striving and innovating to deliver timely and reliable meteorological services to all socio-economic sectors, “ he said.

According to him, climate change poses an existential threat to the planet, exacerbating extreme weather events, disrupting ecosystems, and endangering vulnerable communities.

Anosike said  that it had become imperative to build a weather and climate-resilient society, enhance preparedness for weather-related disasters by promoting sustainable development practices at all levels of government.

The NiMet boss added that the agency would also sustain awareness and continuous education on climate and climate change related issues.

He said that one of the ways the agency would  achieve the feat would be by sustaining NiMet`s Young Meteorological Ambassador Programme.

The director-general urged everyone not to relent at encouraging young minds to build their capacities for meaningful contributions to effective climate actions that would be impactful and measurable.

Anosike canvassed for collective efforts toward advancing frontiers of meteorological science and fulfilling a shared vision of a world that was weather-ready and climate-smart.

“ I would like to call on all of us to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of scientific excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

“Let us leverage the global power and connection of meteorology to address the pressing challenges of our time and to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for all.

“ Lives of future generations are in our hands. Our efforts today will ensure a safer, healthier world for future generations—a world where children thrive in harmony with nature, “ he said.

According to him, the 2024 WMO Day with the theme  “ At the Frontline of Climate Action“ is a call for a collective resolve towards harnessing the power of weather and climate information for the betterment of humanity.

On his part, Mr Bernard Gomez, WMO Representative for North, Central and West Africa, said that the “Early Warnings for All” initiative embarked on by NiMet perfectly complements the 2024 WMO Day theme.

According to him, the initiative underscores the vital role of accessible, timely weather information in saving lives and livelihoods.

“Resilience to climate shocks can be achieved! The various forecasts and warnings issued by NiMet are just the starting point for this to happen in the entire country.

“ Next is the adoption and implementation of the National Framework for Application of Climate Services (NFACS) in Nigeria.

“An operational NFACS will see every inhabitant of this country provided with accurate and fit-for-purpose weather, water and climate services.

“This will not only ensure safety of lives from climate-related hazards but would enhance socio-economic development and prosperity,”  he said.

NAN reports that March 23 of every year is set aside to commemorate the founding of the WMO and acknowledge the pivotal role it plays in promoting international cooperation and coordination in the field of meteorology, hydrology, and related sciences.

However, NiMet held the 2024 WMO Day celebration on March 21 (today) to ensure effective participation of young ones and other stakeholders.(NAN)

Wike promises improved access to quality education in FCT public schools

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration will improve access to quality education in public schools across the territory.

Wike made the promise on Thursday, at the School of the Gifted, Gwagwalada, while inaugurating the rehabilitation and construction of 19 public secondary schools in the FCT.

He explained that the move was part of Tinubu administration’s efforts to improve access to quality education in public schools, in addition to the ongoing provision of infrastructure and other basic services to residents.

“I want to assure the students that it is not only access to education, because if we give access to education without quality, then we have not given education.

“Now we are providing access, we must also provide quality and the quality entails that the environment must be conducive, dining must be habitable, the hostels, including where you take care of yourselves. This is very important.

“So, be assured that we will do our best.

“We are looking into teachers too; how we are going to provide quality teachers to teach our children.

“This is the essence of the “Renewed Hope” agenda, under the government of President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

The minister explained that the rehabilitation of the 19 schools would be funded under the 2023 supplementary budget.

He added that a provision was equally made in the 2024 budget for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of additional 20 schools.

He commended the Senate for passing the 2024 FCT Statutory Budget, which he said would enable the FCTA to commence work in earnest.

Wike also said that the FCT Administration would intervene in the health sector, particularly the rehabilitation of hospitals, with General Hospital Gwagwalada as one of the benefiting facilities.

He assured the contractors handling the 19 schools across the FCT that none of them would be owed, adding that he had already signed for the payment of their mobilisation.

Earlier, the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said that the rehabilitation and reconstruction of public schools was a sure step towards building critical manpower for the nation.

Mahmoud described education as the key foundation for sustainable growth and development of any nation, stressing the need to invest hugely in the education sector.

“We know that education is the bedrock of  development of any nation and is also the cornerstone of progress.

“Children are special gifts from the Almighty to us; they are the leaders of tomorrow and the ambassadors of the nation, so they will need a conducive and very suitable place to learn, for them to achieve their dreams,” she said.

The Mandate Secretary, Education Secretariat, FCTA, Dr Danlami Hayyo, said that the projects involved the rehabilitation and construction of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and administrative blocks.

Others, Hayyo added, include construction of perimeter fences, toilets, dining, halls, kitchens and supply of water facilities among other facilities. (NAN)

APPSN urges private surveyors to be equipped for financial mgt

APPSN urges private surveyors to be equipped for financial mgt

By Lydia Ngwakwe

The Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) has urged private surveyors to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their finances effectively.

APPSN, a sub-group of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State Branch, gave the advice at its 2024 Annual General Meeting and luncheon, on Wednesday, in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting has the theme: “Sustainable Financial Solutions and Understanding Financial Literacy as a Private Practitioner”.

The programme aims to empower private surveyors with the financial knowledge and literacy they need to run their practices more profitably and ensure their long-term financial well-being.

The Chairman, APPSN, Mr Ibironke Adaranijo, noted that financial knowledge was a must-have skill for private surveyors in today’s world.

Adaranijo said financial knowledge would enable surveyors to excel in their business at the long run.

“In a world where financial stability is paramount for success, our theme underscores the critical importance of equipping ourselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of financial management effectively.

“As private practitioners in the field of surveying, understanding financial literacy is not just advantageous, it is indispensable for sustainable growth and prosperity,” he said.

The Guest Speaker, Mr Omoniyi Shiwoku, the Managing Director, Pecuniary Professionals and Variant Pecuniary Consulting, who noted that the theme of the event was apt, said it fits the situation currently facing the country.

Shiwoku advised the professionals to set a solid foundation for themselves by being financially literate, saying the major reason businesses failed was lack of planning.

He emphasised the need for them to be financially literate, adding that it would provide surveyors with a framework to understand the “why” and “how” of money management.

This, he said, would equip them to make sound financial decisions that would contribute to their business’s stability and growth.

He said: “Financial literacy allows surveyors to analyse their income and expenses, understand financial products and services, and make informed choices about saving, investing, and borrowing.

“They can assess risks and potential returns before committing to financial decisions that could impact their business’s success.”

Mr George Olawande, Member, Representing Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, advised the organisers to always invite experts with the requisite knowledge about financial literacy in their midst to do justice to the topic.

He said that the knowledge which the expert would share would help private surveyors to avoid making risky financial choices that could hurt their business.

This, he said, would help them to weigh the pros and cons before borrowing money, investing, or spending.

Olawande was represented by one of his aides, Mr Robert Obasi. (NAN)

“As a permanent secretary, you are not a political appointee, and you know the implication of that.

“If you perform below our expectations, there is nothing like query him in accordance with civil service rules.

2024 Budget: FCTA earmarks N26.6bn for clean water, healthy environment

2024 Budget: FCTA earmarks N26.6bn for clean water, healthy environment

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has allocated N26.6 billion to FCT Water Board and Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to provide clean water and maintain a healthy environment in FCT.

The Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, stated this when he appeared before the Senate and House Committees on FCT, in Abuja on Monday.

Wike appeared before the committees to defend the N1.15 trillion 2024 proposed FCT Statutory Budget.

He said that of the N26.6 billion, N9 billion was earmarked for the water sector to enhance water treatment and supply in the FCT.

He added that out of the N9 billion, N2.2 billion was earmarked for water treatment chemicals while N7.4 billion was for the FCT Water Board personnel costs, overhead costs, and capital expenditure.

“Through the 2024 statutory budget, we shall accelerate the implementation of the Greater Abuja Water Project being executed through a China Exim Bank Loan, but for which we are to make counterpart funding provision.

“The completion of implementation of the project will extend water supply to about 26 districts and layouts, “he said.

He explained that the FCTA had reached an advanced stage in exploiting Public Private Partnership for the deployment of pre-paid meters for dispensing of water at points of consumption.

This, according to him, is to bridge the wide gap between current revenue generation in the water sector, its inherent potential, as well as the need to minimise wastages.

“The successful implementation of this initiative will greatly assist in addressing the revenue shortfalls of the sector,” he said.

The minister also explained that a total of N17.6 billion was allocated to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

“It is worthy to note that the City Cleaning contracts of the FCT require over N7 billion per annum, while the maintenance of the Wupa Sewage Treatment Plant requires about N2.5 billion annually.

“We are also reviewing our mode of operations to initiate a more cost-efficient city cleaning strategy in the 2024 fiscal year,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman Senate and House Committees on FCT, Ibrahim Bomai, and Muktar Betara respectively, who commended the minister for the development stride in the FCT, assured him the full support of the National Assembly. (NAN)
