FCT minister seeks partnership with Qatar on tourism development, security

By Philip Yatai

Mr Nyeson Wike, Minister of the Federal  Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,  says his administration is ready  to partner with the State of Qatar, to develop the tourism sector and improve security in the nation’s capital.

Wike made the offer when the Qatar Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Ali Al-Hajri, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja on Monday.

The minister noted that Qatar has a lot of influence in the international community due to its economic potential and level of development.

He said that FCT was open to cooperation on tourism and security that would be mutually beneficial to both countries.

According to him, tourism and security are top priorities in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“I will be happy if we can have a relationship, particularly as it relates to tourism. We have a lot of potential here that we can explore in terms of tourism with Qatar. So, it will be in our interest if you can explore this.

“We are willing to give out land for the building of a tourist center. We are willing to see how we can partner with people outside Nigeria to fully complete the Millennium Tower and Cultural Centre, which are the main tourist centers in Abuja.”

Wike said the FCT recorded appreciable achievements in terms of security and the provision of infrastructure due to  President Tinubu’s efforts to change the narratives in the country.

He also pledged the commitment of the FCT administration to continue to provide support to all foreign missions in the nation’s capital.

“You will agree with us that in the past few years, it wasn’t that good but things are moving on.

“We are ready to cooperate with you in terms of security. It’s very key. Yes, there was a time when it did appear that we had some security issues. But as it is today, there is a lot of difference.

“Security is one of the eight-point priorities of the President’s renewed hope agenda. So, we can assure you that we will make it very convenient for all our friends who reside and carry out business in Abuja,” the minister said.

Responding, the Ambassador noted that Abuja was one of the biggest capital cities in Africa with investment potentials.

Al-Hajri said Qatar was ready to increase bilateral relations with Nigeria, adding that opportunities existed for investments in the tourism, education, and health sectors in the FCT. (NAN)

FCTA seals orphanage over alleged trafficking of 23 children in Abuja

FCTA seals orphanage over alleged trafficking of 23 children in Abuja

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed the Priesthood Orphanage in Karon Majigi Village, Abuja, after 23 children between the ages of one and 14 were rescued from the orphanage.

The children were believed to have been allegedly trafficked from Plateau.

Mrs Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, FCTA, disclosed this while handing over the children to Plateau Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Caroline Dafur, in Abuja on Monday.

She said that investigation was ongoing to unravel the facts of the allegation.

Benjamins-Laniyi also said that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had authorised the Secretariat to profile and recertify orphanages operating within the nation’s capital.

“Using this as an example, one of the first things I have done is to get approval for the recertification of orphanage homes in Abuja.

“The Minister has approved that there will be a full thorough reprofiling and recertification of anything that has to do with orphanages in Abuja,” she said.

The mandate secretary said that the Secretariat was already working with Dafur to reunite the children with their families.

She added that some of the children had been in the uncertified orphanage since 2019.

Also speaking, Dafur said that three of the children had escaped due to the poor condition of the orphanage.

She added that the escaped children were discovered by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who reported the case to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

She said that the FRSC officials further took the children to the Human Rights Radio, Abuja, who then notified the Plateau Government and the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.

“We came in yesterday and on reaching here, we were told that they went to church. We kept going from one church to another, looking for them until we found them in a Deeper Life Church.

“From there we went to the orphanage and what we saw in that place, in fact, it is not supposed to be called an orphanage.

“The place is just so unkempt. Nine girls were sleeping in a very small room with just two mattresses.

“For the boys, they were in a small room too, with two mattresses just on the floor. It is so pathetic the way human beings treat their fellow human beings in this country,” she said.

She thanked the mandate secretary for assisting to evacuate the children to the Karu Childrens’ Home. (NAN)

Wike asks illegal occupants of Abuja Technology Village to vacate

Wike asks illegal occupants of Abuja Technology Village to vacate

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has asked illegal occupants at the proposed Abuja Technology Village site, along Airport Road, to vacate the area.

Wike gave the directive when he visited the area in Abuja on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)reports that Wike was accompanied by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr Uche Nnaji, on the visit to the site.

The minister said that he would direct the Department of Development Control to issue the illegal occupants an ultimatum to leave, adding that the indigenous community in the area had been compensated since 2015.

“I am not impressed with what I am seeing. We don’t lack the political will. If you don’t take action, people will not believe that anything is possible.

“I will call the Development Control Department and give them an ultimatum for these people to leave. They have been compensated since 2015.

“I urge those who settled here illegally to know that we will not hesitate to move them out. No amount of campaign will stop us from doing the right thing,” he said.

He advised the management of the Abuja Technology Village to take position of the space, fence the area and show some level of presence.

Wike explained that he invited Nnaji to accompany him to the site so that he could take control of the place and see how investors could come in.

He asked the management of the technology village to send him an estimate of what would be required to erect a befitting office on the site.

“You are in charge of this place, and you don’t even have an office here, at least to show presence and tell people that we are here.

“So, if an investor is coming now, he is coming to meet an empty land, and you are renting an office outside the village.

“Please, let us know what it will take to erect a befitting office, so you can leave that place that you said that you are renting, and if you calculate the amount of money you spent renting is a waste,” he said.

Earlier, Nnaji expressed concern over the presence of illegal occupants on the site, saying “erection of illegal buildings in the area could discourage some investors who had expressed interest in investing in the village.”

He disclosed that an American company had already declared intention to build 200 megawatts of electricity in the technology village.

“There are so many other companies that want to start right away, but as this encroachment continues, we have to stop it somewhere, and see how we can take over, either to compensate the owners or demolish them.

“We can’t have this kind of thing here. Our mission here is in the interest of the country, and it is in keeping with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” Nnaji said.

Nnaji said the technology village would be modelled after the London Technology City and the Silicon Valley.

“So, the infrastructure and technology that this place is going to house in a couple of years would be humongous,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the management team of the technology village, the Acting Managing Director, Mr Yusuf Isa, said their hopes were being renewed by the minister’s visit.

NAN  reports that the Abuja Technology Village is a science and technology park and a Special Economic Zone, being developed to accommodate clusters of science and technology firms from selected sectors and promote technology innovation and entrepreneurship.

The project site, where primary infrastructure construction works are ongoing, is strategically located adjacent to other science and technology institutions that together create a huge economic cluster along a superhighway connecting the Abuja City centre and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. FCTA to partner NOUN on women, girls’ education

FCTA to partner NOUN on women, girls’ education

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is seeking partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), to promote women, adolescent girls and vulnerable group’s  education.

The Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs, FCTA, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, made the appeal when she visited the management of the university in Abuja on Thursday.

Benjamins-Laniyi said that the programme would focus on non-conventional and flexible education programmes that would enable women and young girls to acquire functional education.

She explained that the goal was in line with the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu.

The Secretary emphasised the need to provide an innovative, conducive, and flexible curricular for adolescent girls, women, and vulnerable individuals across the six area councils of the FCT.

She said that the move became necessary considering the challenges women and girls faced in accessing traditional education systems.

Acknowledging NOUN’s credibility, flexibility, and affordability, the mandate secretary said that these qualities made the university a key partner.

She expressed optimism that the university’s programmes would accommodate the unique circumstances of women, young girls, and other vulnerable groups.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olufemi Peters, expressed the institution’s readiness to partner with the secretariat to promote inclusive and accessible education.

Peters said that the partnership represents a significant step towards addressing educational disparities in societies and promoting women’s empowerment.

He disclosed that the university has concluded plans to introduce a special course that would focus on professional caregiving skills called “Super Nannies”.

The programme, according to him, would empower individuals to contribute to the holistic development and well-being of children and families, and communities at large. (NAN)

FEMA seeks MTN’ support on emergency response

FEMA seeks MTN’ support on emergency response

By Philip Yatai

The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has sought for technical and infrastructural support from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc to strengthen emergency response and management in the federal capital.

The acting Director-General of the agency, Mr Mohammed Sabo, made the appeal when he led the management team of FEMA on a courtesy visit to the MTN corporate office in Abuja on Wednesday.

Sabo explained that FEMA needed the support of the telecommunication company to disseminate information on preparedness and safety awareness through Short Message Service (SMS) alerts.

He added that the agency haf volunteers, vanguards, local divers, and disaster marshals in remote communities that needed to be trained.

Sabo said that FEMA officials equally needed training on the use of technology in disaster management.

The acting DG further appealed to the company to sponsor FEMA’s town hall meetings on emergency management.

Sabo equally requested the development of mobile applications for emergency management and the issuance of Closed User Groups lines to the Agency.

This, according to him, will ease communication among FEMA officials and community structures in emergency management.

Responding, the Head of Sales and Trade Development, MTN, Mr Ohwofasa Obazenu pledged the commitment of MTN to partner with FEMA.

Obazenu said that the focus of the company in 2024 was on Sustainable Development Goals, noting that FEMA’s request falls within the scope.

“We will partner with you. We will look at our budget and our focus for the year,” he said. (NAN)

Contract Variation: Wike threatens to blacklist Sectraco

Contract Variation: Wike threatens to blacklist Sectraco

By Philip Yatai

The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, has threatened to blacklist Setraco Nigeria Ltd. if it failed to deliver the Southern Parkway Road project before May 29.

Wike gave the warning in Abuja on Wednesday, after inspecting some road projects in the territory.

The southern parkway road project connects Ecumenical Centre, through Federal Capital Development Authority office complex/NTA and Nnamdi Azikiwe Way in the city centre.

When the minister queried the contractor on installation of streetlights, the Managing Director, Mr Ziad Mouannes, said they would have to meet with the minister to discuss issues of variation.

Wike, who could not hide his disappointment, said he would not be a party to any variation, stressing that he had paid the company about 97 per cent of the contract sum.

“We agreed on the funding pattern, and I can authoritatively tell you that we have not failed.

“When I asked them about the streetlights, he (the company’s Managing Director) talked about variation. From the records that I have, we have paid 97 per cent.

“You know I will never accept that, because we have funded the project very well without any failure on our part. I have told them categorically that there cannot be any variation on that project.

“If they don’t complete it on time, I am going to blacklist the company, that is the truth of the matter. Nobody will toy with us; nobody will try to outsmart us; we are not going to accept it,” the minister said.

He further emphasised that the issue of variation was not on the negotiation table.

Speaking generally on the road projects inspected, the minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work so far.

“We saw what Setraco is doing, it is quite comprehensive, and that will change the landscape of the area, and I am happy with the quality of job.

“Then we went to Guzape where Gilmor Engineering Nigeria Ltd is constructing the road network, and we are happy that the company reiterated its commitment to deliver the project by May 20.

“At Arterial Road N20, also by Gilmor, from Northern Parkway (N8) Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Way to the Outer Northern Express Way, you can also see the quality of work they are doing.

“I strongly believe that we will meet the time, and I am happy with the quality of Job,” he said.

Responding to the Ministers concern on variation, Mouannes insisted that the company should be given the opportunity to have a meeting with the officials of the FCTA to discuss and settle the matter.

He assured the commitment of the Setraco to the execution of the project within agreed specifications. (NAN)

FCTA demolishes illegal settlement in  Gwarinpa

FCTA demolishes illegal settlement in  Gwarinpa

By Philip Yatai

No fewer than 15,000 occupants were affected as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Wednesday, demolished illegal buildings and shanties in Gwarinpa, Abuja,

Mr Mukhtar Galadima, Director, Development Control, who led the operation in Gwarinpa, told newsmen that the illegal buildings obstructed the construction of Arterial Road N16.

Galadima explained that the road ran from the Federal Secretariat, through Maitama, Katampe, Jahi to Gwarinpa.

He added that the Engineering Department of the FCTA was ready to begin construction on the road as soon as the demolition exercise was completed.

“These are structures that were illegally built on the road corridor and that is why we are removing them for the Engineering Department to begin the construction of the road.

“We have between 10,000 to 15,000 people who are staying here illegally.

“As we are clearing now, engineers.are already on standby,” he said.

Dr Peter Olumuji, Secretary, Command and Control Center, Department of Security Service, FCTA, said that the affected areas also harbour criminals.

Olumuji added that demolishing the illegal settlements would improve security in Gwarinpa and its environment.

“The shanties we have here harbours a lot of criminal elements that have been terrorising Gwarinpa and its environments.

“We have reported cases of illicit drug and rape suspected armed robbers that were arrested in this area.

“There is a place even called the Abacha Estate, where the Police have recovered arms and ammunition in times past,” he said. (NAN)

Wike places N20m bounty on 2 suspected criminals

Wike places N20m bounty on 2 suspected criminals

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has announced a N20 million bounty on two suspected criminals terrorising residents of the territory.

He said they should be apprehended dead or alive.

Wike made the announcement in Abuja on Wednesday during a visit to the FCT Police Command, where 15 suspected kidnappers and one chance armed robbers were arrested.

The bounty was in response to the Police Commissioner’s remarks that two other criminals were still on the run, adding that the police was on their trail.

“You said there are two suspected criminals on the run? Let me put money on their heads. Wherever they are, send your men out there, I will give them N20 million.

“Go and fish them out, wherever they are. I want to see them dead or alive,” the minister said.

The minister, who could not hide his joy over the arrest of the suspects, commended the commissioner and his men for the wonderful job, saying “the difference is clear.”

He assured the command that he would do everything possible to provide the police with the needed equipment to fight crimes in the territory.

“Let me assure the residents of FCT that with the support of President Bola Tinubu, we are fully prepared to take the war to the criminals.

“I trust the police, and our confidence in them is getting stronger,” he added.

Wike pointed out that information was key to winning the war against crime, as such urged residents and the police to do more on intelligence gathering.

Earlier, the Commissioner of the Police in the FCT, Mr Benneth Igweh, said that 23 suspects were arrested in the last two days.

Igweh explained that Feb. 11, the Mabushi Division arrested eight suspected armed robbers operating in vehicles to rob FCT residents.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the suspects who are responsible for several `one chance’ activities in the past, were trailed to the Central Area in an attempt to rob some innocent residents and were arrested.

“The suspects confessed to using toy guns and knives to scare their victims to illegally obtain from them.”

He added that police operatives of Utako Division along with the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command, on Feb. 13, arrested seven suspected kidnappers in Pyankasa, Tudun Wada and Ketti villages in connection with the abduction of 14 people.

“They are responsible for the kidnapping of five victims in Federal Mortgage Housing Estate, Kabusa, three people at Ketti village, and Fulani resident of Alhaji Sani.

“They are also responsible for the kidnap of a woman and her security guard in Kabusa Estate, one Mr Sunday Zakwai and four others, and equally killed the District Head of the area.

“The criminals also kidnapped two staff at Defence Estate Kabusa.”

The commissioner said that N9 million cash, six AK 47 rifles, bulletproof vests and locally fabricated walkie talkie were recovered from the suspects.

Igweh said that all the suspects would be charged to court. (NAN)

Wike tasks FCT residents on tax, ground rent for infrastructural devt

Wike tasks FCT residents on tax, ground rent for infrastructural devt

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has called on FCT residents to pay their taxes and ground rents to enable the FCT Administration to provide critical infrastructure in the capital city.

Wike, who made the call on Tuesday after an inspection tour of project sites in Abuja, stressed that the government needed resources to provide critical infrastructure.

“Like we have always said to the elites in the FCT – they want roads, they want a good environment, they want streetlights everywhere, but the government does not print money.

“Government needs to tax people and then use that money for the development of the area. So, I will always plead with everybody that they should try as much as they can, to pay their ground rents,” he said.

The minister said that funds from taxes, ground rent and other revenues were being used judiciously to ensure the delivery of various projects in the federal capital to meet the needs of residents.

He said that despite the economic situation in the country, the FCT Administration was prompt in the payment to various contractors to ensure timely delivery of ongoing projects.

“With the taxes people pay, we try as much as we can, to allocate it to the priority projects.

“Again, we don’t allow variation because we also try to pay as at when due; so the issue of variation does not come in” he added.

One of the projects inspected was the completion of the Vice President’s residence by Julius Berger,

Other projects were the Asokoro and Area One roundabouts on the Outer Southern Expressway being constructed by CGC Construction Nigeria Ltd. and Wuye Bridge being handled by Arab Contractors.

The minister also inspected the ongoing construction of B6 and B12 roads connecting Independence Avenue in central area with City Gate and being handled by Julius Berger.

On his assessment of the projects’ delivery so far, the minister expressed optimism that they would be completed in May to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office.

“I think we are quite optimistic with the speed of work, and taking advantage of the weather, we believe that by May, these projects will be ready.

“It is very key for us to understand that without payment of taxes, it will be very difficult for us to carry out most of these gigantic projects.

“If we don’t have the money, there is nothing we can do,” Wike said. (NAN)

FCTA demolishes shanties under Abuja bridges, sends squatters packing

FCTA demolishes shanties under Abuja bridges, sends squatters packing

By Philip Yatai

The City Management Team of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Tuesday, began demolition of shanties built under bridges by illegal squatters.

The team, supported by security personnel, also sent the squatters packing as part of efforts to strengthen security measures to secure the lives and properties of residence.

Mr Mukhtar Galadima, Director Development Control, who led the team in Abuja, said that the exercise was a fallout of the sensitisation of the squatters who were asked to vacate the areas or be forcefully removed.

Galadima, who was represented by Mr Hassan Ogbole, Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Development Control, FCTA, explained that the exercise was in response to the FCT Minister’s directives that the areas should be cleaned up.

According to him, the directive stemmed from the security concerns around and under bridges in the FCT.

“We went out in January to enlighten the illegal squatters, who are taking refuge in the area on the security threats their habitation poses to residents in the area and asked them to vacate the areas.

“We are here as a follow up to that task of cleaning up the shanties and other nuisance within and around subways and under bridges in the capital city.”

He said that the exercise, which began with the cleanup of the bridge by Abia House, along Ahmadu Bello Way, would cover 10 more bridges across the city.

To ensure that the squatters do not return to the area, the director said that the City Management Team had discussed with relevant stakeholders and departments how to make the best use of the space.

The director said that the stakeholders had recommended that the operator of the park in the area should take over the management of the under bridge.

“Gone are the days where spaces are recovered, and they are not being put to good use.

“Therefore, we have proposed, subject to the approval of the FCT Minister, to hand over the spaces under the bridges to park managers to manage them and put them to good use,” he said.

Galadima expressed concern that some of the pillars of the bridges have been exposed to erosion and other engineering challenges due to the activities of the squatters and other scavengers.

He disclosed that a provision was made for scavengers and “panteka” in Wasa layout, adding that the FCT Administration would organise and profile them and possibly relocate them to the area.

“We certainly don’t want them scattered all over the place,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr Peter Olumuji, Secretary, Command and Control, Department of Security Service, FCTA, said that clearing the bridges of miscreants would ensure the safety of lives and property of residents.

Olumuji said that the public have been complaining about the unwholesome activities of criminal elements taking place under the bridges.

He explained that most of the time, when they rub their victims, they run down under the bridge to take refuge.

“We will make under the bridges in FCT very hot for all the criminals.

“As we cleared all the bridges, the Police Division in the affected locations would secure the place pending the taking over of the space by the assigned park manager,” he added. (NAN)
