DRTS demolishes shops, eateries, illegal structures in taxi ranks in Abuja

By Philip Yatai

The Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced demolition of shops, eateries, and other illegal structures in taxi ranks across the capital city, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demolition started with Area 3 and Banex Junction Taxi Ranks in Abuja on Friday.

In Area 3 Taxi Rank, the DTRS team, supported by security agencies, demolished car wash, mechanic workshop, cinema house, and eateries among others, operating within the ranks.

At Banex Junction Taxi Rank, the taxis were not using the ranks because they had been taken over by miscreants who use the space to sell hard drugs, including adulterated fuel and diesel.

Mrs Deborah Osho, the Head of Operations, DRTS, who led the team, explained that the measure was to give room for more taxis to operate within the ranks.

This, according to her, will discourage illegal taxi parks across the city on grounds that there is no enough space in the taxi ranks.

She added that the move would also address the menace of “one chance” operators, who took advantage of the illegal parks to perpetuate their evil deeds.

She pointed out that most of the taxi ranks were not being used for taxi operations but criminals’ hideout, selling hard drugs.

Osho explained that the decision to demolish and clear the taxi ranks of illegal structures was reached after a meeting with transport stakeholders on the need for a cleaner and serene environment in the FCT.

She added that “on Monday, the DRTS invited stakeholders in the transportation sector for a meeting, and one of the resolutions was to clear the taxi ranks for taxis to operate inside the ranks.

“We have equally handed over a space around Eagle Square for taxi operators to use as temporary, to stop the menace of illegal parks around the Federal Secretariat.

“We are prepared to clean all taxi ranks in 2024, to ensure that motorists board taxis inside the taxi ranks and not outside.

“This in the long run, will address the menace of `one chance’ in the city.”

Dr Peter Olumuji, the Secretary, Command and Control Centre, Department of Security Service, FCTA, said “one chance” happens when people do not have a secured taxi rank to board vehicles.

“After going round with DRTS officials, we noticed that most of the taxi ranks were occupied by people that were not meant to be there.

“But as we clear these illegal structures, more vehicles will be coming into the ranks so that commuters will be able to board safe and secured taxis to their various destinations.

“This is a joint effort that will continue.”

Olumuji said that to sustain the clean taxi ranks operations, there was need for more personnel for DRTS and vehicular assets to move to every nuke and cranny of the city.

He added that the Department of Development Control also needs more wheel loaders and caterpillars for clearance operations.

He expressed confidence that the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, would provide the manpower and logistics needed to keep the capital city clean and serene.

Commenting on the development, Mr Richard Siso, the Deputy Chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, described the joint effort as the best for transport operators so far.

He said “this is what we have been asking government to help us do; we thank God that government has listened to us and has come out to clear the parks for us. We are in full support.”

Also, Mr Oladipupo Ebijuni, the Chairman and Director, Enforcement, Painted Abuja Taxi, said “we are very happy with what is happening here. I want to assure DRTS of our full support.” (NAN)

Abuja rail project: We’ll work round the clock to meet May 29 target – Wike

Abuja rail project: We’ll work round the clock to meet May 29 target – Wike

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says FCT Administration will work round the clock to deliver the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) System project on May 29.

Wike stated this after an inspection tour of the project in Abuja on Thursday, to ensure timely delivery of the project.

He said: “I am not a pessimist, and I believe that if we put all our energy into it, we may achieve it. I have also disbursed the funds for access roads, so we have no excuse.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FCTA had in August 2023, announced the award of N5 billion contract for the rehabilitation of ARMT system.

The contract was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC), to be delivered within eight months.

On assumption into office, Wike identified the ARMT as one of the projects that would be commissioned on May 29 to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office.

The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the delivery of the project, following the persistent vandalisation and stealing of critical facilities and equipment of the rail system.

“This is one project that I am so compassionate about, and you know that Mr President has given me a directive that must not be taken for granted.

“When we first visited the metro station, I discovered that there were many security lapses.

“I remember when I first came after our inauguration, I did say that we will have to work on the issue of security by putting a fence around the Metro Station to fend off criminals.

“Unfortunately, that has not been done and to my surprise, I discovered that the contract was not even awarded to CCECC. It is a different contractor awarded by the FCT.

“This is my first time hearing this, and we are going to take it up immediately to see that the fence is put in place, because you can’t talk of operation, when you have not tackled the issue of security,” he said.

He expressed concern that despite engaging security companies to secure the rail facilities, vandalism and stealing had continued unabated.

He said that a measure would be put in place to curtail the problem, insisting that there would be no room for excuses.

“I will not be happy if in May this year, we are not able to operate this metro line. It will be very disastrous for me.

“Even the designs of the rail stations are very poor. whoever approved the design is unfair to Nigerians. I have told CCECC that the designs are not even acceptable in their countries,” Wike said.

In spite of these daunting challenges, Wike expressed optimism that the May 29 target may be achieved.

“Be it as it has been, we still have to work round the clock to see that we achieved our result.

“I have also directed that all the stations must be cleaned, and all the necessary facilities must be provided. There is no room for excuses at all,” Wike said.

The minister also complained on the quality of the access roads linking the rail stations, saying, “the construction is not the best but again what do you do, this is what is on ground.

“Frankly speaking, knowing where I am coming from, and having presided over projects like this, I cannot tell you that I am happy.

“I am not happy, the company must speed up, those who are doing the access roads must also speed up,” he directed. (NAN)

According to her, the goal is to ensure there is no loss of lives and properties throughout the dry season.

She said that the agency began the dry season sensitisation in November 2023, beginning with the palaces of traditional leaders, their members of councils and other community structures.

She said that FEMA has decided to extend the campaign to the six area councils, beginning with AMAC, targeting the chairman and members of his cabinet, including representatives from different communities in the council.

In his remarks, the AMAC Chairman, Mr Christopher Maikalangu, said that the council had prioritised emergency management and expressed commitment to sensitise residents of the council.

Crime: Security agencies on holistic operation in FCT – Official

Crime: Security agencies on holistic operation in FCT – Official

By Philip Yatai

The Department of Security Service, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), says a holistic security operation is ongoing to dislodge criminals operating within the FCT, Abuja.

The department’s Secretary, Command and Control Centre, Dr Peter Olumuji, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, while reacting to the recent security concerns in some parts of FCT.

Olumuji told journalists that the capital city was relatively secure throughout the festive season following improved security operations.

This, according to him, is evident with how residents thronged recreational parks and other centres to have fun during the Christmas and New Year celebration.

He, however, acknowledged some attacks, particularly around Bwari Area Council’s axis, where a community was attacked by criminals but were repelled by the security in collaboration with vigilantes and hunters.

“Yes, there were pockets of attacks in one or two of the villages within the council, but the security agencies being complemented by the vigilantes and the hunters were able to repel the attacks.

“On Jan. 3, the Police Commissioner, FCT Command, along with his tactical team, paid a confidence building visit to the Bwari Area Councils and most communities experiencing kidnapping.

“The FCTA has also asked the police commissioner to deploy more manpower, vehicular assets, and tactical team to the area, which he has done. So Bwari is fully covered.

“Before now, people have been complaining about Kuje, Kwali, Jikwoi, among others, but there was no reported incident in these areas within the festive period. This should tell you that security in FCT is improving on a daily basis,” he said.

He assured residents that the security agencies have up their game to suffocate all criminal elements operating within the city, particularly along border communities.

Olumuji stressed that current security challenges affecting the city were basically in the neighbouring communities of Niger, Kaduna, Kogi and Nasarawa states.

He said that criminal elements come into FCT from the neighbouring states, commit crime and go back, adding that security agencies have deployed personnel to fortify the border communities.

He called on the security chiefs of the G-7 security initiative, comprising FCT and its neighbouring states of Benue, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau, to live up to their responsibilities.

He explained that the initiative was to strengthen collaboration among the security chiefs in FCT and the six contiguous states, to tackle cross-border security challenges.

While acknowledging the gains recorded so far, the secretary said that the FCT still bears the larger burden of the G7 and urged the other states to do the needful from their own end.

“If they do what we are doing, especially in the border communities, that will help to dismantle criminals coming from the states to commit crime in FCT and go back.

“The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike said that he would collaborate with the neighbouring states to make the security water tight, especially at the border.

“You should also know that there is a continuous collaboration among the commissioners of police in the neighbouring states which is being strengthened,” he added.

He identified the mountainous terrain of the border communities as one of the major challenges in tackling insecurity in the areas.

According to him, vehicles cannot ply those areas, and as such, security manpower will have to cover the area on foot.

To address the challenge, Olumuji said that the FCTA was considering the use of technology, particularly drones, to improve security surveillance in the border communities.

“We have the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as part of the security network of FCT, so the FCT Administration will be relying on their capacity, technology wise, particularly their use of drones.

“Operation Safe FCT was inaugurated by the FCT Minister made up of all security agencies, including the Airforce.

“NAF has surveillance drones that we can leverage on, and the FCT Administration has gotten in touch with the NAF authorities to make those assets available for the security of FCT,” he said.

The secretary also said that the FCTA equally adopted the kinetic and non-kinetic approach to tackling insecurity in the capital city.

He said that one of the strategies of the non-kinetic approach was ensuring that the residents of FCT have the Police Command Control phone number to always call during security incidents.

“If you are able to call in real time when an incident occurs, then the security agencies can respond on time.

“Another non-kinetic approach is the encouragement of communities to have vigilantes and hunters as part of their security network.

“These community groups have been very active in complementing the efforts of the security agencies in the FCT.

“There is also awareness creation which focuses on, ‘when you see something, say something’, this will enable security personnel to act,” he said. (NAN)
