FCTA shuts 2 substandard schools in Abuja

FCTA shuts 2 substandard schools in Abuja

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has closed two private schools for operating below minimum standard in the FCT.

The affected schools are Erudite Bright Kids at Kagini and Jane’s Angela School in Abuja Municipal Area Council

The schools were closed during an operation to close all substandard schools operating in the FCT.

The Mandate Secretary, Education Secretariat, FCTA, Dr Danlami Hayyo, who led the team in Abuja, explained that the measure was to ensure quality of teaching and learning in FCT schools.

Hayyo said that the move was in line with the mandate of the Department of Quality Assurance charged with the core responsibility of proper accreditation of schools, monitoring and inspection.

This, according to him, is to ensure quality educational services, compliance to the requirements for the establishment of schools and enforcement of minimum standards as stipulated in the operational guidelines for Schools.

“In a normal situation, no school should be allowed to operate in the FCT without due registration, payment of dues and obtaining the necessary requirements.

“The secretariat through the Department of Quality Assurance is determined to sanitise the system for a better teaching and learning process.

“We will also intensify its efforts to ensure FCT schools compete favorably in the global education space,” he said.

He called on the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) to enlighten their members on minimum standards and the need to key into FCT Administration educational policies.

Hayyo, also called for robust partnership of the private sector in the delivery of quality educational services to the teeming residents of the FCT.

The mandate secretary also frowned at the attitude of some school proprietors who denied evaluators and inspectors from accessing school premises.

On her part, the Director, Department of Quality Assurance, Dr Favour Nse-Edem, explained that the sealed schools failed to satisfy the conditions of establishment of regular schools.

Nse-Edem added that there were no records of their existence and has been operating for years, adding that the closure was key to maintaining standards in schools.

She said that the department would continue to ensure that both public and private schools operate within expected standards.

She added that all schools must operate in line with minimum requirements, duly accredited, registered and adhere to operational guidelines.

The director said that the closure exercise was with the approval of the Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike.

She explained that the department had created awareness through public announcements in various media organisations on the need to comply with operational guidelines to provide quality educational services.

The director said that the announcement served as a warning signal to defaulting and substandard schools operating in an unconducive environment.

“There are other schools operating in an environment that predisposes students to health hazards and those operating in faulty physical structure among others.

“The department has continued to advise the schools owners on what is expected of them but have continued to ignore such professional advice of quality assurance evaluators,” he said. (NAN)

Wike orders demolition of scavengers’ colony in Abuja

Wike orders demolition of scavengers’ colony in Abuja

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has ordered the demolition of a scavengers’ colony along the road corridor cutting across Mabushi, Jahi and Kado Districts.

Wike gave the order in Abuja on Tuesday, when he visited the area, officially known as ‘Road N12’ in Mabushi District of the FCT.

He described the colony, located behind the Minister’s Quarters in Mabushi District, as a “threat” to the security of the city.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the area had been taken over by scavengers popularly known as ‘Baban Bola’, including mechanics and furniture makers.

The minister, who was accompanied by a combined team of security personnel and senior officials of FCT Administration, added that efforts would be heightened to rid the city of criminal elements.

He said that such dens of criminals would not be allowed in the FCT.

He said that the colony was also encouraged by the thick canopy of cashew trees planted by the indigenous people of the FCT for speculative purposes.

Wike warned against planting such trees in areas where the government had mapped out for development.

According to him, the government will not pay compensation for the trees.

Wike ordered the Development Control Department and the Federal Capital Development Authority to clear the entire area and take a scope of the road for preliminary works.

“You should not compensate them. This is a hideout of criminals, and the communities should stop planting trees in the area.

“When they see that the government intends to develop the road, they come and plant crops for the government to pay compensation. We are not going to do any compensation.

“The Development Control must clear this area, chase out all these criminals.

“These are the kind of things you see that people commit crimes and then before you know it, they run down here for cover and people will be saying oh, FCT is not safe.

“It is not a question of giving them notice. There is no notice. You must chase them out now and clear the entire area,” he said.

The minister assured the residents of FCT that the government would do everything possible to reduce the level of crime.

Mr Mukhtar Galadima, Coordinator, Federal Capital Territory City Management Task Team, assured the minister that the area would be cleared of all structures and send the criminals packing.

Galadima, who is also the Director, Department of Development Control, said that the area was proposed for a transit road network that transverses the city across districts.

He said that scavengers had however turned the area into a colony, harbouring all kinds of criminals.

“With the security challenges across the country, illegal activities of this nature will not be allowed to continue.

“That is why we are not giving consideration to compensation; we have to secure the place.

“After the clearing the area, FCDA will move in immediately, nobody will come in and settle again,” he said. (NAN)

World Sight Day: FCTA provides eyecare services, glasses to 500 workers

World Sight Day: FCTA provides eyecare services, glasses to 500 workers

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has provided eyecare services and donated reading glasses to more than 500 workers in the administration.

Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), FCTA, stated this during a news briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

Fasawe explained that the media briefing was part of activities to commemorate the 2023 World Sight Day, with the theme, “Love Your Eyes at Work”.

She said that the free services, which took place on Tuesday, were part of continued efforts to make eyecare services affordable and available to the working population of the FCTA.

“During the eye screening, 500 staffers of the FCTA were given reading glasses free to complement President Bola Tinubu’s initiative.

“You will recall that President Tinubu had in September inaugurated the distribution of five million reading glasses to Nigerians.

“As an individual, I am donating 750 reading glasses to the FCTA in support of the 2023 WSD activities,” Fasawe said.

She added that the team would move to Karu Abattoir on Wednesday to screen the workers and the immediate community.

Fasawe said that drugs and other medical interventions would be provided while an additional 500 reading glasses would be donated to the community members.

“Last year, we provided optical, medical, and surgical interventions to the teaming population of FCT residents, with support from relevant stakeholders and the Federal Ministry of Health.

“This year, the HSES has received the support of the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike to celebrate the WSD with rapt attention to the sight and visual needs of workers.

“This is an indication of Wike’s resolve to ensure that FCT stays in the forefront in the fight to reduce the menace of avoidable blindness,” she said.

Fasawe added that a considerable proportion of Nigerians had the tendency to wait until there was an emergency before seeking the help of the eye care professional.

This, according to her, makes intervention and treatment difficult with outcomes that could have been better if presented earlier.

Fasawe described the workers of the FCTA as “middle-aged, highly mobile, dynamic, and very active”, stressing the need to take proper care of the eyes for maximum productivity.

“Over the years, we have continued to strengthen our eye care delivery system in the FCT with the establishment of eye clinics in 10 secondary health care facilities owned by the FCTA.

“In all of these centres, quality eye care services are being delivered in our bid to reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment in the FCT,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, with the cooperation of the World Health Organization has set aside the second Thursday of October, every year, for the celebration of WSD. (NAN)

FEMA reduces response time to emergencies to 3 minutes in FCT – Official

FEMA reduces response time to emergencies to 3 minutes in FCT – Official

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says it has reduced its emergency response time from five to three minutes to reduce casualties and save lives and properties.

Mrs Florence Wenegieme, Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, FEMA, made this known during a sensitisation campaign to commemorate the 2023 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in Abuja on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation was carried out at Bwari Area Council Secretariat, Abuja and the Palace of Esu Sa-Bwaya of Bwari (the Chief of Bwari), Ibrahim Yaro.

The sensitisation with the theme, “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future for All” began on Oct. 4 across the six Area Councils of the FCT.

Wenegieme explained that the three minutes response time became faceable after training community structures to serve as first respondents to emergencies in their various communities.

She identified the community structures as local divers, emergency vanguards, disaster marshals, town criers, volunteers and other structures like youth and women groups.

She said that the community structures have been adequately trained on emergency response through drills and simulations to equip them with the needed knowledge and skills.

The director added that FEMA had equally procured power bikes for the agency officials to navigate the Abuja traffic and reach the emergency scene within three minutes.

According to her, emergency management is multisectoral and everyone’s business, including school going age children.

“Community members are usually the first respondents to an emergency because it happens within their community.

“They have been adequately trained to know exactly what to do during emergencies and rescue operations before FEMA officials arrive.

“This quick response will ensure that more lives and properties are saved,” she added.

Wenegieme explained that the awareness campaign was to ensure that residents identify disaster risk in their respective communities and know how to prevent and mitigate disasters to reduce the impact.

She added that sensitising community members was critical to ensure that no one was left behind during emergencies.

She particularly stressed the need for community members to pay attention to vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, the blind, the aged, and people living in disaster prone areas.

Responding, the Esu of Bwari Yaro promised to cooperate with FEMA in driving the disaster risk reduction messages to every household in Bwari area council.

Earlier, the Council Chairman, Bwari Area Council, Mr John Gabaya, said that the council has inaugurated its Local Emergency Management Committee to respond to emergencies at local level.

Bagaya, who was represented by the Council Secretary, Me Eli Kadanya, said that the council had taken proactive measures against hazards to avert disasters.

He explained that part of the measures included clearing of refuse, desilting of drainages and sensitization of residents against building on water wars and follow prone areas.

He assured FEMA of the council’s support in ensuring that community members were enlightened and mobilised to take action against disaster. (NAN)

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has begun the distributions of assorted food items to vulnerable residents of the territory.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said at the commencement of the exercise in Abuja on Tuesday, that the goal was to ease the hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.

Mahmoud identified the items include 17,222 bags of rice and 8,400 bags of maize, adding that every deserving family in the six Area Councils and 17 chiefdoms of FCT would benefit.

She also said that apart from the food items, the government was exploring other avenues to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the residents.

Mahmoud said that the fuel subsidy removal had a ripple effect on transportation, inflation, and an overall burden on the citizenry.

She added that it was to address this hardship that the Federal Government decided to bring succor to Nigerians through the release of assorted food items from the National Strategic Reserve.

“We will ensure that every deserving family in the FCT receives these items free of charge,” she said.

The minister assured the President Bola Tinubu administration’s resolve to implement measures that would stabilize prices, encourage economic growth, promote prosperity and well-being for all the citizens.

On his part, the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Mr Olusade Adesola, said that the Administration had put measures in place to monitor the distribution of the food items.

This, he said, was to ensure that the palliative reached the targeted beneficiaries in all the Area Councils.

Adesola, who was represented by the Director, Operations, Planning and Strategy, Mr Samuel Attang, added that the palliatives were doled out as part of efforts to address the prevailing economic challenges.

He also said that the efforts would create an environment of stability and prosperity for all.

Similarly, the Mandate Secretary, Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mr Lawan Geidam, said that the distribution would be transparent.

“The secretariat has put in place an efficient and transparent distribution system to ensure that the process is fair, equitable, and devoid of any form of favoritism or discrimination.

“I am optimistic that the commitment, dedication and vision that have been demonstrated by the new FCT leadership will pave the way for a transformative era that will bring forth self-sufficiency in food production,” Geidam said. (NAN)

FCTA continues its clean-up of Abuja operations, impounds 69 vehicles

FCTA continues its clean-up of Abuja operations, impounds 69 vehicles

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday impounded 69 vehicles for various offences as part of its continued efforts to make Abuja city safe and clean.

The vehicles were impounded by the FCT combined Security Task Force at different locations in the federal capital, Abuja.

Mr Abdulatef Bello, Director, FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS), said that the seizures were in continuation of operations to clean the city of illegal operators of commercial vehicles.

This, according to him, is to improve security of lives and properties in Abuja.

Bello explained that the vehicles were impounded for offences such as wrong parking, operating ricketier vehicles, number plate violation, and vehicles suspected to belong to one chance operators among others.

He said that the FCT Administration would not rest in its effort to ensure the city was clean from all kinds of nuisance.

He added that the owners of the impounded vehicles would be prosecuted by FCT Mobile Court sitting in the premises of the DRTS.

The director said that three of the vehicle owners, suspected to be one chance operations, would be handed over to the police for prosecution.

He attributed the high number of casualties of once chance operators to the ineffectiveness of mass transportation system in the city.

Displaying a sharp object seized from one of the suspected one chance operators, the Secretary, Command and Control Unit, FCTA, Mr Peter Olumuji, said the administration was working hard to curb the menace.

Olumuji advised road users to patronise only painted taxis for their own safety, adding that efforts were ongoing to address the transportation deficit in the city.

Also speaking, Mr Mukhtar Galadima, Director, Department of Development Control, FCTA, equally blamed the high rate of criminalities in the FCT on indiscipline.

Galadima said that FCTA would continue to sensitize road users on the need to be extra careful when using taxis, so as not to become victims of one chance operators.

He particularly advised residents against patronising unpainted taxis or those without number plates. (NAN)

Wike seeks collaboration with EU to strengthen FCT’s economy

Wike seeks collaboration with EU to strengthen FCT’s economy

By Philip Yatai

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has sought the collaboration of the European Union (EU) to strengthen the economy of the federal capital, Abuja.

Wike made the appeal when the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Samuela Isopi, visited him in his office in Abuja on Monday.

He said that the EU could partner with the FCT Administration in the areas of agriculture, tourism, and security.

The minister said that FCT was open for cooperation and investments in the aforementioned areas towards building a viable economy in FCT.

According to him, increased cooperation, and partnership in agriculture, tourism and security will help to unlock the economic potentials of the FCT and create jobs for the teeming populace of the city.

He expressed optimism that the visit of the Ambassador would create something tangible that would impact on the lives of the residents of the city.

Wike, who said he did not believe in mere visits, stressed the need to finalise on what needed to be done.

“Not just coming to tell me we are here to partner with you, we are here to work with you.

“It is good, but at the end of the day, the people will want to see what the achievements are, which for me, is a priority.

“You know that Abuja is one of the best cities in terms of available facilities. The landscape is beautiful, and it is a tourist and agricultural area.

“These are areas we can partner with you sincerely.

“Maybe, when we meet with the member countries, it becomes specific, which of these areas we can deal with, maybe agriculture, tourism, and security as the case may be,” the minister added.

He added that as part of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, Wike said that the FCT Administration had submitted a proposal for the establishment of a Secretariat that would deal with women development issues.

This, he said, would ensure inclusion and promote the participation of women in governance.

Earlier, the EU Ambassador, said that the Union was refocusing its cooperation towards improving agricultural value chains and renewable energy.

This, according to her, would assist Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda. (NAN)

1,100 inmates await trial, 144 convicted in Agodi Correctional Centre -NCoS

1,100 inmates await trial, 144 convicted in Agodi Correctional Centre -NCoS

By Olatunde Ajayi

Abduljelil Odunlami, a Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), says 1,100 inmates from the Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan are currently awaiting trial for various offences.

Odunlami, while visiting the Ibadan Branch of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said the facility currently housed a total of 1,244 inmates.

He added that the inmates comprise 24 female and 1,220 male, with 144 of the total number of inmates already convicted of various offences.

Odunlami disclosed that the aim of the visit was to seek for cooperation and support of members of the Ibadan Branch of NBA in helping inmates.

”We want you to assist inmates without financial means to get legal assistance, as our Agodi facility is housing many inmates who do not have financial capacity to get legal aid,” he said.

He added that the Agodi Correctional Centre was supposed to house inmates in the Ibadan axis by virtue of regulations.

“But some inmates are now being taken to the Oyo axis, and this is an aberration to the NCoS.”

Odunlami said the awaiting trial inmates needed NBA’s support for a quick dispensation of justice, especially those who do not have the financial capacity to get lawyers and are with critical sickness.

“If an offender within Ibadan is being remanded in the Oyo town correctional facility, there may be delay in justice.

“There may be an attack on the road, as well as the problem of safety on the road. Time must also be considered.

“So, I want us to join hands and work together to ensure that inmates within Ibadan are retained in the Agodi correctional facility for a quick administration of justice.

“Government is doing its best, but corporate organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like NBA also need to complement government’s efforts in the provision of welfare packages for inmates,” he said.

In her response, the Chairperson of Ibadan Branch of NBA, Folashade Aladeniyi, said the awaiting trial inmates have constitutional rights to be visited.

She said this would be within a specified timeframe and by their relations and lawyers without any financial obligation.

The chairperson, who was represented by the branch’s Secretary, Olakunle Akintola, urged correctional facility officers to ensure easy protocol for relations’ attention without intimidation or extortion.

Aladeniyi also urged correctional officers to always ensure proper evaluation of inmates to be presented for pardon or release during facility decongestion exercise, especially inmates with critical and life-threatening sickness.

“We are still finding it difficult to get medical certificates from medical facilities within correctional centres to apply for bail applications in courts.

“Something must be done about this because the medical facilities within the correctional facilities can not handle some inmates’ sickness,” the chairperson said.

Speaking also, Olakunle Faokunla, Chairman of the Advocacy Committee of Ibadan Branch of NBA, assured of continued partnership between the NBA and correctional centres in the state.

He said this would be in the areas of administration of justice and welfare support.

“Our branch has been visiting correctional facilities in the state and will continue to engage with the inmates to provide necessary support when needed.”

Blue economy will offer 350 million jobs if adequately harnessed — NIMASA DG

Blue economy will offer 350 million jobs if adequately harnessed — NIMASA DG

By Gabriel Agbeja

Dr Bashir Jamoh, Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), says the blue economy will offer 350 million jobs to Nigerian citizens if adequately harnessed.

Jamoh, who was represented by the Acting Coordinator of NIMASA, Abuja Office, Hajia Rakiya Lamai, made this known during the NIMASA Special Day at the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair, Abuja.

According to him, Nigeria’s vast under-utilised blue economy offers huge opportunities for growth and development to overcome its present economic challenge.

“The blue economy has enormous potential as it offers the country the opportunities of 350 million new jobs if adequately harnessed.

“Ocean resources like fishes, shrimps and other sea foods have not been satisfactorily harnessed, just as ship repairs are done in neighboring countries and in faraway Turkey because the facilities are lacking locally.

“With a combination of modern technology, relevant laws and support from the Federal Government, relevant agencies and stakeholders, disbursement of  CVFF Funds, NIMASA is working to fulfill its mandate of regulating operations in the maritime industry,” he said.

He said NIMASA was intensifying efforts to secure the Nigerian maritime environment and develop indigenous capacity for shipping expansion to provide value addition for sustainable growth and development of the Nigerian economy.

Jamoh further said waterways expansion would be a much better incentive than tax waivers as it would encourage more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and private sector involvement in the maritime transport business.

According to the NIMASA boss, moving toward waterways expansion will boost Port services and encourage the much-needed development in the industry.

“While we await a cohesive policy to fully kick into gear, we must all become ‘Blue Ambassadors’ (Advocates for the Blue Economy).

“The Blue Economy is every Nigeria’s Economy; the Media, Civil Society and other non-state actors, all have a role to play in galvanizing greater national awareness and participation.

“We must rethink our waters, we need a total rethink from a ceremonial view; events such as Argungu Fishing Festival as well as others which must be redesigned and repackaged from the standpoint of the blue economy,” he said.

He said efforts ought to be doubled to banish sea blindness amongst Nigerians and make seaward and sea-related activities more mainstream and attractive.

He added that a Public Private Partnership (PPP) ought to be harnessed for maritime cluster development. (NAN) (wwwnannews.ng)
