The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) said on Wednesday that plans have been concluded to construct Golden Jubilee Estates across the six-geo political zones of the country.

The Managing Director, FHA, Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, said this at the unveiling of the logo for the commemoration of the authority’s 50 years anniversary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the celebration is “The Future of Housing in Nigeria, Celebrating 50 Years of FHA and its Impact on the Housing Sector”.

Ashafa said that the groundbreaking of the golden jubilee estate was done recently at the Mbora District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said that the housing project would be realized through a Public Private Partnership (PPP), adding that many companies have lined up to be part of the project.

According to him, the project is going to be a 24 months project, and FHA will soon start inviting interested bidders who will be part of the construction.

“It will be a 20, 000 unit housing estate project that will enable Nigerians to own their own houses through “rent to own approach”.

“The golden jubilee estate as the name implies will be permanent like that of Festac town in Lagos.

“FHA will continue to maintain consistent delivery of quality houses,” he stressed.

Ashafa stated that the purpose of the celebration was to recognise and celebrate those who have been part of the success story of the authority over the years.

He also said that FHA was also celebrating the impact it had made in providing quality and affordable housing to Nigerians.

The authority recently performed a groundbreaking ceremony of 7000 housing units in Mbora District of the FCT, under a PPP arrangement with Nuga Best Regis International. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

I didn’t purchase N300m bullet proof SUV – Wike

I didn’t purchase N300m bullet proof SUV – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike has refuted claims of purchasing a N300 million Armoured Lexus LX600 SUV on assumption to office.

Wike made the rebuttal shortly after a visit to Metro Train Station, Abuja on Wednesday to inspect ongoing rehabilitation of Abuja Rail Mass Transport System.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some sections of the media had published a picture of an Armored Lexus SUV model LX 600, fitted with ‘FCT – 01’ plate.

The reports claimed that the SUV, which cost more than N300 million, belonged to the new FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

But Wike refuted the claim, describing it as mere “mischief”, stressing that he was sworn in on Monday and had not even sat down to work yet.

He said that all he did was interact with staff and today (Wednesday), went to the Metro Train Station, Abuja with the Minister of State for FCT to see things for themselves.

“We are now going back to the office to interact with each of the departments in the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

“But I have seen what is going on in the social media, how the FCTA Permanent Secretary bought a bullet proof car of N300 million that I am using.

“So, I want you people to go hit your hand there (on the car) and see whether it is a treated car.

“With all due respect, people should be careful not to destroy other people,” he said.

He explained that when he resumed, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Adesola Olusade had told him that the FCTA has cars that the ministers would use.

“And the car we use is this (pointing at a regular Lexus SUV).

“I have never approved for any car to be bought and I have not used any official bullet proof car.

“I am not using a bullet proof car as FCT Minister, so we should report the right thing, and not destroy ourselves.

“I want you to take a look at the car I came with, the one with the flag and see whether it is a bullet proof car”, he asked the journalists at the scene.

In a related development, the Director Press, Office of the Minister, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, dismissed claims by some media outfits that Wike plans to demolish 6,000 houses across 30 settlements in Abuja, including Wadata Plaza.

“We would like to categorically state that these stories are entirely false and without any basis,” Ogunleye said.

He explained that the story on the demolition of 6,000 houses was reported by a national daily newspaper on Aug. 22, with the caption “Abuja land: FG may revoke land allocations, demolish 6000 buildings, slums”.

He added that another mainstream newspaper also published what he described as an “irritating story”, with a caption, “Wadata Plaza will go down, Reactions trail Wike’s demolition threat”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Minister did not in any of his pronouncements list the areas or the number of illegal houses to be removed.

“Rather, his emphasis has always been that illegal settlements and structures would be removed for the greater good of the public.

“Equally vexing” is the headline from a reputable broadcast station saying, “I will fix Abuja in 6 days” and attributed the same to the FCT Minister.

“We wish to state quite clearly that at no time did the Honourable Minister say this or allude to this phrase in any way. This headline, therefore, is borne purely out of mischief,” he said.

The director press pointed out that such sensational reporting not only misleads the public but also undermines the vital role that accurate and well-researched journalism plays in society. (NAN)

Mr Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Wednesday inspected the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) System rehabilitation project.

Wike told journalists during the visit to the ARMT Metro Station in Abuja that one of his concerns was to address challenges affecting public transportation in the FCT.

According to him, transportation is one of the sectors he intends to transform in a short time to improve movement in the capital city.

“Transportation is one of the sectors we intend to intervene in the short term to reduce traffic congestion within the city.

“I know that we have a metro station in Abuja, and it is not working, why is it not working? Can we fix it within a short time? He asked.

He noted that while there were other lots of the project that were not completed, people would have confidence on the one that was completed and working.

He stressed that it was not a good idea to begin another rail project while the one that was finished remain unusable.

He said that every project that commenced must be finished before embarking on another one, considering the availability of resources.

“I assured the public that the rail transport system is a project we will take to a logical conclusion.

“Before commencing another project, we will need to determine which areas are the most traffic areas. This is very important to decongest areas with traffic congestion,” he said.

He told the management of CCECC Nig. Ltd, the construction company handling the rail construction and rehabilitation projects to deliver quality projects.

After a train ride from the Metro Station to Airport and Idu Stations to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation project of the rail system, the minister described it as a “good project.”

He added that if completed, it would significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city.

“This is one of the projects we will complete and put to use.

“The money for the rehabilitation is on ground and I have already directed the Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade to make sure that the contractor is paid.

“We will work to ensure that in the next coming months, this project is commissioned and put to public use,” Wike said.

Earlier, the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said that assessing the problems affecting the rail transport and finding ways to address them would help in putting the system to public use.

According to her, the transport system is one of the palliative measures that President Bola Tinubu wants to provide to the public.

“We are in the ARMT Metro Station to look at what is on ground, what the challenges are and what is expected of the ministry to move transportation system to the next level.”

The permanent secretary had earlier noted that Wike was known to many as a ‘Mr project’, adding that it was not surprising that his first assignment outside the office was a visit to a project site.

Olusade explained that the ARMT system was challenged by massive vandalisation of rail infrastructure during COVID-19 lockdown, adding that private security companies have been engaged to salvage the situation.

He added that a major hurdle in the operation process has been addressed, adding that the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company has been assigned to manage the operation.

“We are already developing a framework for the assignment, and we look forward to this project contributing significantly to the reduction of the pains of the removal of fuel subsidy,” he said.

Also, the Director of Transportation, FCTA, Mr Joseph Akinteye, explained that the ARMT system rehabilitation project consists of Lots 1 A and 3 spans 45.245 kilometres (km).

Akinteye explained that the ARMT system phase 1, which comprises Lots 1 and 3, made up of 77.775 km, out of six Lots designated by the Transportation Master plan was awarded in 2007.

Akinteye, however, said that only Lots 1 A and 3, made up of 45.245 km, were completed in 2017 and commissioned in 2018. (NAN)

FG to construct flyover on Abuja-Lokoja road to curb flooding

FG to construct flyover on Abuja-Lokoja road to curb flooding

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, says the ministry under his watch will construct a flyover as a permanent solution to end the perennial flooding on the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister stated this on Tuesday during his tour to inspect ongoing construction works on the Abuja-Lokoja road a day after his inauguration into office.

The minister alongside the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and some directors in the ministry visited some work sites on the road.

According to the minister, the Abuja-Lokoja road is a major gateway that links the southwest, south-south and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the northern parts of the country.

He said priority should, therefore, be given to it because of its critical role to the socio-economic life of the country.

“We have seen the area that always get flooded at Koton Karfe section and the the only solution to it is to do a flyover on it to fly above the flood level.

“That will really work because it is about 1.6 kilometres which will take five flyovers, you know, multiply by two.

“So we are going to be making a proposal and submit to Mr. president to give us his nod because we are looking for permanent solutions to our problems,” he said.

The minister, however, urged the contractors handling the road project to use concrete , adding that there would be a review and redesign of the road contracts.

He promised to deliver concrete roads across the country, saying they were more durable and could last up to 50 years and were also maintenance free.

In his remarks, the Kogi governor commended the minister for choosing to visit the state as his first field assignment and pledged to give all necessary support to the minister and the contractors handling the road.

Bello noted that construction of roads and provision of other critical infrastructure by President Bola Tinubu’s administration will serve the people better than palliatives.

He, therefore, commended President Tinubu for appointing Umahi as Minister of Works, adding that ”the minister is a field man and will deliver the Renewed Hope project of this Administration.

“For Mr Presidents to deploy the Honourable Minister of Works, just a day after swearing-in, to come and look into this particular problem, is commendable. I think we can ask for more.

“The road is going to be designed in such a way that no matter the flooding that will ever come, our road will stand the test of time, and I thank you sir,” he said. (NAN)(nannews.ng)

Mr Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has solicited the support of workers in the FCT Administration (FCTA) to make Abuja a befitting capital city.

Wike made the appeal in Abuja, while receiving handing over notes from Mr Adesola Olusade, Permanent Secretary, FCTA on Tuesday.

The minister said that his mission was to make Abuja a great city, befitting of a federal capital of the most populous nation in Africa.

“I will ensure that Abuja gets the best. You will see projects upon projects, and projects that will be completed and not abandoned.

“I am not a party to abandoned projects. I start a project when there is money as such we will look into our finances before we begin any project.

“I believe in the renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu, and Nigerians will see the difference in no distant time,” he said.

He, however, noted that not much would be achieved without the support of the workers and residents of the FCT.

He said that in the short time, the ministry would restore streetlights in the city, improve public transportation and ensure improved sanitation to keep the city clean and habitable.

“We need your support. Nothing will work without your passion, dedication, and commitment to duty. We shall provide all the support, incentives and what you need to work well.

“What I expect is results. However, if I provide the needed resources, you must deliver or return the funds.

“From next week, we will commit ourselves to deliver on our responsibilities, but we have to work together to deliver on our mandates,” he told the workers.

Wike said that appointments into the various secretariats of the FCTA would be made after due consultations with relevant stakeholders.

He urged directors who felt they did not possess the capacity to deliver on their current tasks to seek redeployment to areas of their strength, adding that he would not take any excuses for failure.

Also, the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said that with the support of the workers, what Wike has done in Rivers would be replicated in the FCT.

“I am of the firm belief that, together, and with your support, we will replicate what the Minister (Wike) has done in Rivers in the nation’s capital, especially at the Area Councils and Satellite Towns.

“This is so that the lives of our people in the rural areas will be positively touched.

“It is also instructive to state that maximum commitment, cooperation, and loyalty is expected from all staff, because it will not be business as usual.

“We will run with the vision of President Tinubu, which we will be unveiling as we hit the ground running,” she said.

Earlier, the permanent secretary assured the ministers of the unalloyed support of the entire staff of the FCT Administration in ensuring the actualisation of the mandate of the President Tinubu.

“I am particularly impressed that all stakeholders in FCT, including the indigenous people of Abuja, have demonstrated their commitment to work with you all.

“The warm welcome extended to you yesterday clearly shows the eagerness of the residents of FCT to see you replicate the Port Harcourt experience in the FCT,” he said.

Mr Shehu Hadi, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, thanked Wike and Mahmoud for accepting to serve and reposition the FCT.

Hadi assured the ministers of the workers’ support and cooperation needed to reposition the FCT as one of the best in the world.

“We look forward to a harmonious relationship for the good of all in the FCT,” he said. (NAN)

Sen. Dave Umahi, the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, said that the building and construction industry under his watch would prioritise the use of local content in the delivery of its works.

Umahi said this in Abuja on Monday while addressing Directors, Heads of Departments, and other staff members on his assumption of office as the Minister of Works.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Umahi is among the ministers inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as members of the Federal Cabinet.

Umahi, who came in the company of his wife and children, said local content was the way to go and that concrete was in abundance in the country.

“I will challenge our engineers on the issue of concrete technology even with the challenges of forex and petroleum prices and the abundance of limestone in our country.

“We will activate local content during our tenure in administration. I have indicated to see the contractors, meet with them and that will be after taking briefings from the heads of departments.

“I am not an office person, I am a field person. For some of you in that department, we will be inspecting the Lokoja-Benin, Lokoja-Abuja road,” Umahi said.

The minister added that under his watch, the bureaucratic tendencies of the ministry would change.

“We are going to make changes, which means that the bureaucratic tendency of our system will fall.

“Under my leadership, no file will stay for more than two hours. In two weeks, I will be in the field and I will settle down only when I have seen things.

“We will be touring the six geopolitical zones to see things for ourselves,” the minister said.

He added that he would also place priority on the welfare of staff but urged them to work with him to achieve the renewed hope that the Tinubu’s administration stood for.

Earlier in his welcome address to the minister, Director, Highways Construction and Rehabilitation, Mr Folorunsho Esan, representing the Permanent Secretary, Mr Mahmuda Mamman, congratulated Umahi and noted that they were professional colleagues.

Esan pledged the ministry’s total support to him in ensuring that he achieved his aim of building the nation’s infrastructure, and wished him a successful tenure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Umahi was elected as the Senator representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District in the 10th Senate.

Umahi was thereafter nominated by Tinubu for ministerial appointment. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
