Abuja, Aug. 21, 2023 (NAN) The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mr Nyesom Wike says he will demolish all illegal buildings and structures in the FCT as part of efforts to restore the Abuja Master Plan.

Wike stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday to announce the short, medium, and long term plans to overhaul the FCT and reposition it among the best cities in the world.

As the new sheriff in town, he said: “It is not going to be business as usual. Those distorting Abuja Master Plan: if you build where you are not supposed to, the building will go down.

“If you build on a green area, sorry, it will go down. Those who were allocated land and refused to develop them, we will revoke such lands and re-allocate them to those who are ready to develop them.

“Those who don’t pay ground rent, we will not notify them to do so, but I will not be tired of signing revocation notices.

“Uncompleted buildings that have become a safe haven for criminals will be reclaimed by the government and put them to good use.”

The minister added that the government would no longer tolerate the indiscriminate operation of markets and motor parks by the roadside.

He said that people selling goods and wares under the umbrella by roadside, illegal motor parks and bus stops would no longer be tolerated, adding that they constitute part of the security challenge in the FCT.

“If you have a brother, sister, or uncle involved in any of these, please tell him that the time is up. The goal is to sanitise Abuja and make it safe for everyone,” he said.

He also said that efforts would be made to strengthen waste management and restore all traffic lights to keep the city clean.

He added that motorcycle and tricycle operators would be banned from the city and put an end to open grazing within the capital city.

“We will consult with stakeholders, the natives, and herdsmen to address some of these problems, including open grazing.

“We will provide alternatives to reduce the suffering of the people, particularly those without private vehicles.

“We will bring back mass transit to improve access to public transportation, and therefore, the person in charge of transportation must keep his record clean,” he said.

He said that emphasis would be placed on infrastructural development, taking one project at a time to restore the city to its glory.

The minister said that development would also be extended to the six Area Councils as part of strategies to decongest the city.

He also said that all revenue leakages would be blocked to be able to mobilise the needed resources for infrastructural development in the FCT.

On security, Wike said that he would work with all security agencies in the FCT and provide them with necessary tools and logistics to rid the city of all criminals.

According to him, FCT is supposed to be the safest city in the country, adding however, that the city is no longer safe.

“We will provide security agencies with necessary tools and logistics and after that, we will not want to hear any excuses. What we want to see is results.”

Wike also promised to consider the natives in political appointments with a view to carry everyone along.

He solicited the support of all stakeholders, including the media to restore the confidence of the people on President Bola Tinubu-led administration drive to give people hope. (NAN)

Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has described the ancient city of Ibadan as home where he learned to turn everything that comes his way into opportunity.

Mr Olusola Abiola, Director, Information, Office of the Vice President, in a statement, said Shettima spoke at a wedding reception at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The wedding was between Ibukun Okunmadewa, the bride, and Obafemi Omitiran, the groom.

The bride, Ibukun, is the daughter of Prof. Folusho Okunmadewa, whom the Vice President described as ‘my beloved teacher’.

Shettima, who laced his speech with the lines from ‘Ibadan,’ a poem by one of Nigeria’s greatest poets, John Pepper Clark, said that he was in Ibadan, not as a guest, but as a member of the bride’s family to receive guests at the wedding.

“So, I’m here to receive you as guests in this ancient city of memories. Ibadan is a home to me, a home that formed me and taught me to turn everything that comes my way into an opportunity.

“This would not have been easy without the patience of my beloved teacher, Prof. Folusho Okunmadewa, whose daughter, Ibukun and her groom, Obafemi, we are here to celebrate as they embark on a beautiful journey of discovering the essence of life.”

The Vice President said that the gathering for the wedding was not that of mere friends but a closely-knit family united by the traits of time, education and unbreakable bonds.

“As I look around this room, I’m not only reminded of a city that has woven its culture, values and aspirations deep into my being, but also of how fate has played a part in expanding relationships and families,” Shettima stated.

Extolling the virtues of the bride’s father, Prof. Okunmadewa, Vice President Shettima described him as “a beacon of wisdom and guidance for vast generation of scholars.

Vice President Kashim Shettima (3rd right) and Deputy Governor of Oyo, Adebayo Lawal and Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno, in a group photograph with the couple’s family, During the wedding reception in Ibadan

“I’m privileged to not only draw from this intellectual oasis of the University of Ibadan, but also to identify as a member of the family and as a qualified son of the soil.”

He said he knew how a father feels on a day that he is giving his daughter’s hand in marriage and prayed for the newly-wedded couple to deepen their love for each other.

“Giving away one’s daughter in marriage is one of the most profound bitter/sweet experiences in human existence.

“It is a reminder that life is a journey of luck, a journey of hope and a journey of change.

” But I have no doubt that you have instilled in Ibukun the moral discipline that she needs to carry on from this day, away from her first family. And I pray that her new life brings forth endless joy.”

Among dignitaries that attended the wedding reception were the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal; Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno and former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole.

Others were the Country Representative of the World Bank in Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mr Olusade Adesola, has enjoined youth corps members posted to the territory to impact residents through their activities.

He gave the advice on Friday in Abuja at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘B’, Stream Two National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation course.

Adesola said: “One of the best ways the residents of Abuja can feel your presence and indelible impacts is by your individual performance and outstanding contributions in the Community Development Service (CDS).

“To this end therefore, you must strive to identify areas of needs in your respective host communities and work towards bridging such gaps.’’

He also urged them to maximise the one-year service national engagement by identifying and acquiring industry-oriented skills that would enable them successfully shape their future career.

The permanent secretary added that this was necessary as the labour market was saturated with trained graduates seeking office employment.

Adesola said that NYSC was established by the Federal Government in 1976 to engender national unity, cohesion and to promote nation building between and amongst Nigerian youths.

“The deployment policy of the NYSC ensures that young Nigerians are posted to states other than their own.

“This is expected to provide corps members the rare opportunity of appreciating and exploring the nation’s deep cultural, social, religious as well as ethnic diversities.

“I believe every one of you will be willing to take advantage of this golden platform to build social and professional contacts within your service year,” he said.

The NYSC FCT Coordinator, Mrs Winifred Shokpeka, said so far, a total number of 2,580 corps members comprising 1,752 females and 828 males had been duly registered for the orientation course.

She assured them that during their stay at the camp, they would be treated with dignity and respect.

Shokpeka advised them to comport themselves in a disciplined and orderly manner, as any form of negative behaviour such as drug abuse and other anti-social acts would not be tolerated.

“You are enjoined to key into the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

“Avail yourself of this rare opportunity which is aimed at transforming your lives after the service year to be job creators rather than job seekers,’’ he said.

The oath of allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Hussein Yusuf, who was represented by Justice Ikeolu Adelaja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the orientation course which commenced on Tuesday would end on Sept. 5. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Revenue harmonisation: FCT-IRS will address grey areas – acting chairman

Revenue harmonisation: FCT-IRS will address grey areas – acting chairman

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing all grey areas in the ongoing revenue harmonisation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The acting Executive Chairman, FCT-IRS, Mr Haruna Abdullahi said this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the revenue harmonisation in Abuja.

The MoU was signed between FCT-IRS and the Kuje Area Council at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some stakeholders were skeptical about the transparency and accountability in the revenue harmonisation initiative which made FCT-IRS the sole revenue collector in the FCT.

Abdullahi, who described the ongoing harmonisation as a “marathon and not a sprint”, assured stakeholders that all concerns would be considered and addressed accordingly.

“This is a new initiative and as always, there will be challenges. However, I want to assure stakeholders that the harmonisation process will not be in a sprint, but a marathon, taking one step at a time.

“Along the way, with determination and integrity, we will get there, and we will all be smiling at the end of the day,” he said.

He said that the MoU between FCT-IRS and Kuje Area Council would provide stakeholders with a clear framework that outlines respective roles and responsibilities in the harmonisation processes.

He assured FCT residents that every kobo contributed to the revenue purse would be accounted for and used judiciously.

On transparency and accountability, the chairman said that the FCT-IRS would leverage technology, strategic partnerships, and employ international best practices.

This, according to him, will ensure the needed transparency in the harmonisation procedures and processes.

“As we embark on this harmonisation journey, I want to assure all residents of the city that every kobo contributed will be accounted for and used judiciously.

“This is not just about Kuje, it is a template and beckon of hope on what can be achieved when organisations and government agencies come together to work for the good of all.”

Abdullahi assured stakeholders that the revenue service would continue to engage and clarify issues of concerns as they emerged in line with relevant laws and guidelines.

He said that the channels for clarifying every concern would always be opened for dialogue for all stakeholders to be on the same page.

He commended Mr Adesola Olusade, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, for his dedication and support in the harmonsation journey, adding that his unwavering commitment had been inspiring.

Abdullahi also commended the Executive Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Mr Abdullahi Sabo, for his determination and steadfastness in supporting the revenue harmonisation process.

In his remarks, Sabo affirmed the council’s confidence in the capacity of the FCT-IRS to handle revenue collection on their behalf.

He expressed confidence that with FCT-IRS standardisation of existing data and automation of revenue collection, all levy and revenue collections in Kuje Area Council would be transmitted electronically.

He expressed optimism on the success of the project and indicated confidence that other area councils would equally sign the MoU with the FCT-IRS to strengthen the harmonisation drive.

Olusade, who witnessed the signing of the MoU, said that the revenue harmonisation drive was part of efforts to ensure ease of doing business in the FCT, which began in 2012.

He attributed the current challenges to the harmonisation process to lack of mutual trust and insufficient teamwork among relevant stakeholders.

The permanent secretary, however, expressed optimism that the harmonsation process would grow to fruition with the level of commitment being expressed by relevant stakeholders. (NAN)

FCTA to demolish about 500 unapproved buildings, structures in Dutsen-Garki

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Wednesday, announced plans to demolish about 500 illegal houses and structures in Dutsen-Garki, Apo District, Abuja.

Mr Mukhtar Galadima, Director, Department of Development Control, FCTA, disclosed this after a meeting with the leaders of the community in Abuja.

Galadima, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Mr Hassan Ogbole, explained that all houses and structures that were illegally acquired or built would be demolished.

He lamented that individuals acquire properties and lands from the natives and develop the lands without approval from the FCTA.

“This is unacceptable to the FCT Administration,” he said.

He explained that the meeting with the locals was in line with the reform agenda of the FCTA to consult the natives before any demolition exercise so as not to take the people by surprise.

He added that the meeting was to also intimate the leaders of the affected community and the public on the intended demolition exercise.

Galadima said that they have agreed with the community leaders to embark on marking of houses and structures, illegally built by non-indigenes in two weeks time.

This, he said, would be followed by the demolition exercise.

The director advised residents against contacting locals for land acquisition and urged anyone interested to acquire land to go to the constituted authority to avoid loss of properties.

He also advised the locals against selling off lands and properties to non-indigenes or expanding without approval from FCTA.

In his remarks, Mr Kak Bello, Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, pointed out that besides erecting illegal structures, people also build on water ways.

“This is not good for the environment. Building on flood plains and dumping of refuse on water ways contribute to the environmental problems being experienced in some parts of FCT.

“I urged people to be law-abiding and desist from building illegally and on flood plains,” he said.

On his part, one of the representatives of the community, Mr Danjuma Fanus, pledged the full cooperation of the community leaders for the success of the exercise.

Fanus, nonetheless, appealed to the FCTA to be considerate while carrying out the exercise so as not to make any of the natives a victim.

“We will cooperate with the authorities, but we also need your cooperation,” he said. (NAN)

The Enforcement Team of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), in collaboration with the Nigerian Police has arrested a six-man gang of illegal tax collectors in the state.

KADIRS Head of Corporate Communication, Mr Zakari Muhammad, disclosed this at a press conference in Kaduna on Wednesday.

Muhammad explained that the culprits were intercepted on Aug. 9, during a joint operation along Muhammadu Buhari Way, in Kaduna North Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the suspects were caught red-handed while allegedly collecting cash from unsuspecting individuals, describing the act as “unlawful”.

According to him, the act contravened section 51 of the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation law, 2020, which prohibits cash collection.

“The section provides that: “Notwithstanding any provision in any law on assessments, levying or collection of taxes, levies, revenues or surcharges in the state, no revenue shall be payable or collected in cash by any person or authority.

“It added that only by bank draft, electronic debits, or credit card, point of sales terminal or money transfer in bank account of the service, and any other electronic means approved by the board for such purpose,” he said.

The head of the corporate communication said that the alleged suspects have been handed over to the security operatives for further investigation and prosecution.

He said that the joint operation was a part of the acting Executive Chairman of KADIRS, Mr Jerry Adam’s commitment to restore taxpayers’ confidence in the system.

This, he said, was being achieved through sanitising and promoting transparency in the state’s tax administration systems.

“The revenue service is hereby calling on citizens of Kaduna State to report the activities of illegal tax or revenue collectors through the following numbers: 09088743859, 08099414343. 07062020465 and 09088743853.

“We appreciate our esteemed taxpayers for the usual collaboration, support and understanding,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Ruth Oketunde

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has distributed relief items to 11,101 victims of the 2022 flood disaster as well as vulnerable groups in the FCT.

Mr Mustapha Ahmed, Director-General, NEMA, flagged off the distribution of the items at the Tunga Maji warehouse of the agency, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the distribution was done under the Federal Government’s 2023 Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI) Project.

Ahmed said that the items distributed are expected to boost the socio-economic conditions of the beneficiaries, selected from the six area councils in the FCT.

Ahmed, represented by the Supervisor in charge of SNELEI project in the FCT, Dahiru Yusuf said the intervention was approved specifically for persons affected by last year’s flooding.

“The Federal Government approved the intervention specifically for people affected by the 2022 flood disasters and those classified as the most vulnerable persons across the country.

“Following the flood, search and rescue operations were successfully conducted in several locations where trapped persons were rescued and given necessary care.

“Immediately after the flood incident, damage and loss assessment were conducted and relief items approved by the Federal Government were delivered across the states to complement initial intervention
by Government,” he said.

He added that based on the assessments which were jointly conducted by NEMA and FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the federal government approved the special intervention.

Ahmed said that the intervention is expected to drive a sustainable socio-economic resilience of the beneficiaries.

“These items are meant to bring succor to them and also enhance their economic capacity.

“The agricultural inputs such as crop seedlings and equipment are given to take farmers back to the land, stimulate crop production and safeguard our national food security in the middle economic downturn.

“The intervention is expected to stimulate value chain activities at the grassroots.

“At the same time, the livelihood support items are meant to help artisans to improve their businesses and grow the economy.

“We urge the beneficiaries to make proper use of the items to improve their socio-economic conditions,” he said.

He urged the beneficiaries to resist the temptation of selling the items, stressing that it would destroy the good intention of the federal government.

Also speaking, Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation of FEMA, said the items will be evenly distributed to households within the six area councils.

“We did enumeration about three months ago and we put into consideration the six area councils and I must say that beneficiaries were evenly selected from the area councils.

“I believe these items will go a long way in relieving people’s plight especially in this period of hardship,” he said.

NAN reports that the items distributed include; sewing machine, grinding machine, mosquito nets, nylon mat, blanket, foam mattresses, cooking put, cooking stove, detergents, toilet soap, and water pump.

Others are rice seedlings, herbicides, pesticides, growth enhancers, liquid fertilizers, 25kg rice, 10kg beans, 10kg sorghum, 2 litres of vegetable oil, salt, tomato paste and seasoning cubes.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
