Prof. Ibrahim Garba-Sheka, Chairman, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday.

He said the election would be conducted into the 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions in the 44 local government areas of the state.
He said the commission had met with leadership of the parties and relevant stakeholders to promote active engagement in its preparations for the election.
“We have so far distributed non-sensitive materials to our offices in the local government areas, and we are gradually taking delivery of the sensitive materials.
“The commission also trained electoral officers and other personnel to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
“Success of the election is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders. We, therefore, solicit the support of all to enable us conduct a hitch free exercise,” he said.
Garba-Sheka, therefore, urged political parties and other stakeholders to cooperate with the commission in ensuring effective monitoring during the pre and post-election processes.
According to him, more than 200 observer groups have indicated interest to participate in monitoring the election.
Garba-Sheka said the commission was working in close collaboration with the forum of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to facilitate effective deployment of the election monitors and observers in all the 484 wards in the state.
“Election monitors and observer groups are expected to operate based on the guidelines set out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” he said.
According to him, the commission is also collaborating with the police, security agencies and other para military organisations to ensure free, fair, and credible election in the state. (NAN)

He said Nigeria had lost a “courageous and vibrant civil society leader”.

“Uzoma was a known gender rights advocate, civil society activist and a tireless campaigner for credible elections in Nigeria,” Okoye said. (NAN)

INEC boss tasks NASS on  electoral reforms

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged the National Assembly to use a bipartisan approach in amending the Electoral Act to help improve conduct of elections in the country.

Yakubu made the call at the inauguration of the Joint Technical Committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on Friday in Abuja.

The event was organised by the National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters with support from Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).

He was represented by Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.

Yakubu said that the amendment was timely, saying that more fundamentally, the reforms must be impactful, approached from a bipartisan angle, devoid of divisive issues and concluded at least by the first quarter of 2021.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan had in 2020, pledged the commitment of the National Assembly to the passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill by the end of first quarter of 2021.

The INEC chairman welcomed the renewed efforts and commitment by the leadership of the National Assembly towards amending the electoral legal framework for the conduct of elections.

Yakubu said that the renewed drive by the legislature was timely and must be sustained and approached with a sense of history and urgency.

He said that the efforts must be diffused with clearly defined timelines, priority, interventions and strategic thinking.

Yakubu said that the commission was fully committed to the amendment process and would continue to offer suggestions and recommendations that would help improve the regime of elections in the country.

He further said that amending the electoral legal framework would not automatically lead to improvement in the management and conduct of elections.

“The Constitution and the Electoral Act are not self-executory, and both operate through the actions and inactions of the critical stakeholders in the electoral process,” he said.

A member of the Technical Committee, Mr Sadiq Mua’azu said that one of the advantages of the electoral reforms was to bring all amendments together in one document.

Mua’azu said that the major target of the amendment was to ensure that all political parties were gender sensitive as well as eliminate all forms of discrimination in all political parties.

“The bill mandates all political parties to ensure that women leaders are women or persons of the feminine gender and that all youth leaders are between the ages of 18 to 45 at the date of elections into such offices.

“The bill also seeks to increase maximum election expenses to be incurred by Presidential or Governorship Candidates, Senatorial or House of Representatives Candidates.

“The amount was increased for the Presidential election from N1billion to N5 billion and from N200 million to N1 billion for the governorship and for the Senate and House of Representatives it was increased to N100 million and N70 million respectively,” he said.

Sen. Kabiru Gaya, Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, said that the bill when passed and assented would tremendously change the political sphere of the nation.

“The amending of the Electoral Act would indeed positively affect the electoral process and procedures which has posed challenges and raised controversies that have put the mantra of free, fair and credible elections to question,” he said.

He said that the Technical Committee was inaugurated in order to achieve the set timeline for passing the bill by the end of the first quarter of 2021.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, pledged to work with the technical committee to ensure unhindered presidential assent to the bill.

Malami was represented by Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reform and International Relations, Mrs Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu.

“I will continue to work more closely with the National Assembly to ensure that the bill is eventually passed as scheduled.

“I recall that immediately after the 2015 elections, the President approved the inauguration of the constitutional and electoral reform committees in 2016, we have been working with the National Assembly and we came up with four bills that have been approved by the Federal Executive Council and forwarded to the National Assembly,” he said.

In a goodwill message, Head, Governance and Stability, FCDO, Mr Sam Waldock said that the UK was a proud supporter of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“In the last five years, the UK has invested more than 50 million pounds in Nigeria’s democratic process and it’s the largest democracy in Africa and it is the leading member of Commonwealth.

“We commend the National Assembly for its work to reform this legislation which will go a long way even after the next election.

“Setting up a technical sub-committee to expedite the work on this bill is a very important contribution to Nigeria’s electoral legal framework,” he said.

Also, Executive Director, PLAC, Mr Clement Nwankwo expressed optimism that the bill would be passed within the shortest possible time.

“Following the experience of the last failed attempt to sign the Electoral Act in 2018, it is quite clear that this commitment is unanimous on all sides to ensure that we do have a new Electoral Act in place.

“With the support from the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, we are able to collaborate with the National Assembly to deliver on the commitment that has been made by the assembly,” Nwankwo said. (NAN)

The Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, has advised the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, to sanction perpetrators of fake news.

Obasa gave the advice when the executive members of the state council of NUJ paid him a courtesy call on Tuesday.

The Speaker stressed the need for a lasting solution to the problem of fake news dissemination in the country.

“I want to suggest sanctions against perpetrators of fake news to serve as a deterrent to others.

“This is because journalists have a role to play in sustaining the achievements of the founders of the great profession,” he said.

Obasa urged the union to come up with a structure that would surmount the challenges of fake news.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked its members in court against the leadership of the party in Anambra to withdraw all litigations ahead of the November governorship poll in the state.

The South-East National Vice Chairman of the party, Chief Ali Odefa, made the request in Awka during a meeting of the Zonal Working Committee with stakeholders in the state on Monday.

Odefa said that it was in the overriding interest of the party for peace and unity to reign ahead of the poll.

According to him, the party needs unity and cannot afford any court distractions, if it must form the next government in Anambra.

He, therefore, urged the aggrieved party members to direct their complaints to the zonal leadership for amicable and dispassionate resolution.

Odefa, who expressed satisfaction with the progress of PDP in Anambra, promised that the zonal leadership of the party would ensure that the primary election produced the best and most popular candidate.

He advised the “money bag” aspirants to deploy their money in lobbying delegates “and not try to bribe any leader of the party”, saying that money would not play any role.

He said: “Anambra PDP has all it will take to win the governorship election and the aspirants are equally capable and qualified.

“Under my watch, we shall have a free, fair and transparent primary where the popular candidate will emerge and others will support him.

“My mission is to produce a PDP governor in Anambra.”

The PDP chieftain said the party remained strong in the southeast and ruled out the possibility of any other PDP governor defecting to another party.

In an address, the state party Chairman, Ndubuisi Nwobu, said the party remained united and strong more than ever before in the state.

Nwobu said the party could no longer afford the distractions of the litigations and urged aggrieved members to sheathe their sword and allow peace to reign.

He urged the aspirants to have confidence in his leadership to conduct a free, credible and acceptable primary which, he said, would be the selling point of PDP in the election.

Also, Chief Peter Obi, the former PDP Vice Presidential Candidate in the 2019 election, called on the aspirants to stop competing against one another.

Obi urged them to see the ruling-All Progressives Grand Alliance as their common opponent in the election.

He said that aspirants should shun social media hype and get to work by going to villages and electorate to make commitment of what they intend to do for them, if elected.

He called on the party leadership to design programmes for a tour of communities in the state.

The former governor announced a donation of N100,000 to each of the 326 electoral wards as Christmas gift.

He also donated N4 million monthly stipend to the state executive to facilitate its activities. (NAN)

My relationship with Ganduje, Kwankwaso remains cordial – Shekarau

Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau (APC – Kano Central), says his relationship with Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso still remains cordial.

Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011, said this during a media interactive session on Sunday in Kano.

According to him, there is no misunderstanding between him and Ganduje on one hand and between him and Kwankwaso on the other.

He said: “I and Ganduje have been together for so many years. When I was the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office then, he was a commissioner, and we used to interact a lot.

“I want to assure you that our relationship has since remained cordial, even up to now. So, there is no any problem between us.

“The same thing applies to Kwankwaso; we are in good relationship. Our political differences has not, and will not, affect our relationship. I have never defected from one party to another because of him.

“When I was in APC; Kwankwaso joined the party and then, I left, not because of him, but because of the leadership of the party. The same thing when I was in PDP; I later left, not because he joined the party,” he said.

Shekarau further called on the electorate to always consider quality leaders during elections, instead of focusing on zoning.

According to him, quality leadership is more important than zoning in every election, adding that there is no zoning in the APC constitution and also, in the Nigerian constitution but only exists in common sense.

“I want to tell you that there is no place in the APC constitution that the issue of zoning is mentioned. I think it is only being considered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“All we need is quality leadership, fairness and justice to all, and carrying everyone along; that is what is called balancing of equation,” Shekarau said. (NAN)

I never knew I would be governor – Diri

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa, on Sunday, joined other Christians in the state to offer praises to God for witnessing the first Sunday of 2021.

Diri, who worshipped at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, his hometown, told the congregation that he never knew the community would produce a governor, while he was supporting the governorship aspiration of others.

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Daniel Alabrah, quoted Diri as saying that when it was time for God’s destined purpose, it would surely manifest.

He said: “Sometimes I wonder that all the time I had been supporting the governorship aspiration of others, I did not know that God had destined me, even before I was born, to be governor. So when your time comes, nobody can stop it.

“If the same God could do this for me, He will do it for you. Just be faithful, have free mind and He will do it again and again,” he said.

The governor urged Christians to be faithful to God in order to unlock more earthly blessings, just as he called on the people of the state to always give thanks and pay less attention to their worries.

“Let me commend the people of Bayelsa for taking out time across the state to thank God today. What can you offer to God other than to say ‘thank you’ to Him?

“He has the gold and the silver. He also has the power, as power comes only from Him.

“If not for God, I will not be standing here as governor. So we must continue to thank Him with everything we have daily.

“I, therefore, join the rest of the people of Bayelsa to say thank you Lord for keeping us to see this first Sunday of 2021,” Diri said.

He also urged the citizens to realise that they were special in the sight of God, adding that He always manifested Himself in the affairs of the state, whenever the agents of evil tried to plunge it into darkness.

“For us in Bayelsa, we are a special people, and until we realise that we are special, we will continue to give room for darkness,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the service was attended by members of the state executive council, traditional rulers, other appointees and dignitaries from across the state. (NAN)
