Kukah Centre trains political parties’ managers to deepen democracy

The Kukah Centre, a policy research institute, has organised a development workshop for political parties to enhance pluralism, internal democracy and equal opportunity in Nigeria’s political party system.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Kukah Centre is one of the organisations implementing six components of the European Union’s flagship governance programme known as the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).

The centre’s project is tagged “Component III-Support to Political Parties”.

Speaking at the end of the three-day event on Thursday in Lagos, Ms Inimfon Etuk, a Public Relation and Strategic Communications professional, said that political parties’ capacity must be built to develop purpose.

Etuk said that political parties in their campaigns, must discover ways to use interactive technology to encourage public participation.

She spoke on the topic; “Developing Enhanced Political Party Communication”.

“In the past, political campaigns were all about face-to-face interactions. Candidates would converge, shake hands and give speeches.

“In today’s evolving digital age, more and more campaigning is done online. Political communication is evolving, and some trends are here to stay.

“Effective political communication typically involves understanding the needs and wants of the audience and then tailoring the message to fit those needs,” she said.

According to Etuk, since the early 1990s, the most important change to the political communication process has occurred through the rise of the internet.

Etuk added, “The World Wide Web facilitates a virtually unlimited choice of information and communication one-to-one with a minimal role for gatekeepers or government censors.”

She noted that internet messages had the capacity to flow further, faster, and with fewer intermediaries.

Etuk said that in the political landscape, AI had already transformed how politicians and governments communicate and interact with their citizens.

“By processing extensive data and studying voter behaviour, AI can craft messages that appeal specifically to different groups of voters,” she said.

Etuk urged political parties to wage on the internet.

“Political campaigns will model after commercial marketing strategies focusing on visuals and political communication will be primarily through cyberspace, which will become the new public space for political action,” she said.

Mr Esrom Ajanya, Head of Programmes, The Kukah Centre, said that the purpose of the workshop was to engage various political parties on certain priorities that had been identified through a Needs Assessment.

“On the 5th of December 2023, The Kukah Centre held a public presentation of the Needs Assessment of political parties in Nigeria.

“The assessment sought to understand the challenges faced by political parties.

“Based on the findings of this exercise, The Kukah Centre held a high-level meeting with the National Leadership of political parties on the 16th of July, 2024, where Political Parties were tasked with setting up Technical Working Groups (TWGs) to facilitate party-specific interactions for tailored support towards strengthening their management and operations.”

Ajanya said that issues highlighted by the report as priority areas for intervention included: exploring and clarifying the fundamental value systems, organisational structure and membership profile.

Others are active and well-established knowledge structures for political discourse and compliance with legal and institutional frameworks and political communications.

In his remarks, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, the National Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), an umbrella body of all registered political parties in Nigeria, commended the organisers for commitment to deepen democracy.

Dantalle said the only vehicle for contesting elections or assuming any elective office in Nigeria remained political parties, hence the need to strengthen them.

“This programme is about building capacity for the managers of political parties and the management of political parties.

“This will catalyse into a better democratic atmosphere for the country if we have better managers of political parties. This is a wonderful and welcome development.

“We thank the European Union in partnership with the Kukah Foundation for this initiative,” Dantalle, the National Chairman of Allied People’s Movement (APM), said.

Stating that the initiative was in line with IPAC’s motor of deepening democracy in Nigeria, he described the workshop as a propelling force for building democracy. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Lawmaker installs streetlights to address energy poverty in Kaura LGA

By Philip Yatai

Rep. Donatus Mathew (LP-Kaduna) has installed solar-powered streetlights in rural communities in Kaura Local Government Area of the state to address energy poverty in furtherance of his constituency projects.

Mathew told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, that rural electricity, though very critical, has always been in short supply for both households and small businesses in remote communities.

According to the lawmaker representing Kaura Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, power is very critical to improving the quality of lives of the rural population.

“Most times, particularly during the rainy season, electricity from the national grid is always off, and people are than left in the dark.

“This is making it very difficult for people to carry out their commercial and everyday activities.

“The epileptic supply of electricity in rural areas also allows criminal elements to carry out their evil in the dark unabated.

“It is also challenging for people to carry their sick ones to the hospital at night because it is usually dark everywhere due to the lack of constant supply of electricity,” he said.

The lawmaker told NAN that to address the challenge, he has provided solar panels and accessories for installation in strategic locations.

He added that streetlights were being installed across all the political wards in the local government area to ensure that no community is left out.

“So far, we have installed more than 200 solar streetlights, and more are coming until we saturate most communities in my constituency.

“This sustainable renewable energy will brighten various communities and villages at night,” Mathew added.

He described rural energy poverty as a complex and multi-dimensional issue that must be addressed to give rural dwellers a sense of belonging.

This, he said, would have a significant impact on residents’ quality of life and health, individual income and welfare.

“If we light up our rural communities, economic activities will flourish, people will move around easily in the dark and quality of life would improve.

“What we are doing may seem small but the impact is beyond measure,” he said.

The lawmaker reiterated his commitment to sustaining the implementation of people-oriented projects that would impact lives. (NAN)

Makinde urges media not to relent in upholding watchdog role

937 total views today

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advised media organisations and practitioners not to allow themselves to be cowed or silenced while he lying to foster democracy and development in Nigeria.

Makinde, represented by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, gave the advice during a retreat in Ibadan on Thursday for journalists covering the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat has “The Role of the Media in Fostering Transparency and Development in a Multi-party Democracy” as its theme.

Makinde said: “The media, as the society’s mirror and watchdog, must always speak truth to the power, hold government accountable, and keep the political class and other members of the society on their toes.

“The media must ensure that its platforms are not controlled only by those in power or those who have the wherewithal.

“Just like the public office is held in trust, the public space which the media controls is also held in trust for the people by media practitioners.

“Just as the public office-holders should not abuse the trust, media practitioners should not also abuse or misuse the trust.

“Development is a consequence of the pursuit of public interest. When all sectors of the society pursue public interest, there will be development.”

The governor added that for a multi-party democracy to thrive, the media owed the society the responsibility of keeping watch on the ruling party.

He said this was necessary to prevent the ruling party from using its power to stifle democracy by crippling opposition.

“Remember the French judge, Baron De Montesquieu, who warned that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

“It is, therefore, a key function of the media and a task that must be done that you prevent the absolutism of the ruling party or the majority party,” Makinde said.

He stated that the Oyo State Government had put in place measures to promote transparency, by regularly monitoring and addressing citizens’ concerns.

“My administration established the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYSACA), which has the mandate to investigate cases of corruption and mismanagement of public funds.

“We also established the Project Monitoring Agency, which is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that the state gets value for its money.

“All of these are targeted at ensuring that as much as it is practicable, we run a transparent administration,” the governor said.

Members of the PDP Press Corps with the Chief Press Secretary to the Oyo State Governor, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, during a retreat in Ibadan on Thursday

The event’s guest speaker, Prof. Adebusuyi Adeniran, a Senior Researcher at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, urged journalists to uphold the country’s democracy by being objective in their reports.

Adeniran advised the media to continue to uphold their constitutional role of holding government and leaders accountable for the development of the country.

In his remarks, Chairman of PDP Press Corps, Mr Samuel Ogidan, said the retreat would enhance the journalists’ skills.

“This is in the face of rising demands and complexities of reporting, as well as the evolving world of politics.”

Ogidan said the goal of the retreat was for the participants to be better equipped to navigate the challenges of journalism.

“This is to enable them continue upholding the values of integrity, accuracy and objectivity in their reports, especially in the digital age.

“As journalists covering politics, we serve as watchdogs of democracy. Our responsibility is immense, and so are the pressures and obstacles we face.

“The fast pace of political events, the complexity of governance and the shifting nature of public opinion demand that we stay sharp, informed and adaptable.

“This retreat provides the much-needed pause from our daily grind, giving us the space to reflect on our craft, sharpen our skills and engage in meaningful discussions about the future of journalism in Nigeria,” he said.

Ogidan, who said investigative journalism remained a cornerstone of political reporting, tasked participants to dig deeper and uncover the truth often buried beneath layers of bureaucracy and deception.

He commended Makinde for hosting the retreat, given his understanding of the role of free and responsible journalism in strengthening democracy, fostering transparency and empowering citizens.

The Press Corps Chairman described Makinde as a visionary leader with a passion for transformational governance, who has consistently raised the bar with distinctive innovations and inclusive approach.

“From infrastructural improvements to educational reforms, his leadership capacity has brought remarkable progress and growth to the people of the state,” he said.

Ogidan added that Makinde had also made significant contributions to PDP’s growth on the national stage.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

INEC fixes Nov. 8, 2025 for Anambra guber poll

979 total views today

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Nov. 8, 2025, for the conduct of Anambra governorship election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at a regular consultative meeting of the commission with political parties in Abuja on Thursday.

Yakubu said this was in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which required the commission to issue the notice for election, not later than 360 days before the date of such an election.

“As you are aware, the last governorship election in Anambra State was held on Nov. 6, 2021. By the effluxion of time, the governorship election is due next year.

“Consequently, the commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State governorship election should hold on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025.

“In compliance with the mandatory requirement of 360 days, the formal notice for the election will be published on Nov. 13, 2024.

“Party primaries will be held from March 20, 2025 to April 10, 2025. The candidate nomination portal will open at 9 a.m. on April 18, 2025 and close at 6 p.m. on May 12, 2025.

“The final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025. Campaign in public by political parties will commence on June 11, 2025 and end at midnight of Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025.

“Voting will take place in all the 5,720 polling units across the state on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025,” Yakubu said.

He said that in the coming weeks, INEC would provide details of other electoral activities, including the registration of new voters, transfer of voters and the replacement of lost or damaged PVCs.

According to Yakubu, detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the election will be uploaded to INEC website and social media platforms before the end of the meeting.

He said hard copies of the timetable and schedule of activities would be made available to the party leaders, and urged the parties to use the INEC timetable to come up with their own timetable and schedule of activities to enable the commission to work with them.

This, according to him, will also help INEC to plan better for the deployment of personnel and resources for the monitoring of party primaries and campaign activities.

“By doing so, you will avoid the last-minute rush, with the attendant inability to meet deadlines,” he said.

On the forthcoming Ondo governorship election, Yakubu said that INEC had successfully accomplished 10 out of the 13 activities listed in its timetable and schedule of activities for the exercise.

He said what remained now were publication of the notice of poll, the last day of campaign and election day.

The INEC chairman commended all political parties fielding candidates for the election for fully complying with the requirements for the upload of summary of the list of polling and collation agents for the election.

He assured them that INEC was working in earnest to deliver the identification tags for each of the 24,148 agents uploaded to its portal.

“The commission is also glad to report that the collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) from the last continuous voter registration (CVR) commenced today in Ondo State.

“For the next five days (Oct. 17 – Oct. 21), the cards will be available for collection at each of the 203 wards across the state.

“Thereafter, the cards will be available for collection in our 18 local government area offices in the state for one week (Oct. 23 – Oct. 29).

“As earlier announced, the centres will be open to citizens from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily,” he said.

Mr Yusuf Dantalle, National Chairman,  Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), urged INEC to improve on the Nov. 16 Ondo governorship poll.

Dantalle advised the commission to put its acts together, provide adequate electoral materials, test-run its Bimodal Voting Accreditation System (BVAS) and results viewing portal (IReV), to avoid undue technical glitches that would cast doubt on the integrity of the election.

“The issue of late arrival of election materials to some polling units must be addressed to reinforce confidence in the polls.

“Equally important is effective communication by the commission’s officials, particularly during the collation of results, to avoid suspicion of manipulation of results as it happened in the Edo governorship election where some politicians stormed the collation centre to know why collation of results was suspended.

“Nigerians, indeed the entire world, expect transparency in the conduct of elections,” he said.

The IPAC chairman called on security agents, election observers and the media to discharge their duties with utmost responsibility and patriotism.

“Vote trading has been the bane of most elections in Nigeria. Security agents should apprehend and prosecute vote buyers and sellers and their sponsors and make them to face the full weight of the law.

“We must sanitise the electoral process to stimulate increased restoration of trust that will encourage citizens’ participation in elections,” he said.

Dantalle urged governments at all levels to take urgent steps to ameliorate the hardship currently being faced by Nigerians.

This, according to him, will spur citizens’ political participation that will give more credence to the electoral process.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Wike, 27 Rivers lawmakers not APC members – APC Chairman

1,234 total views today

By Angela Atabo

Dr Tony Okocha, Chairman of the All Progressive Congress(APC), in Rivers,  has said that FCT minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of the APC.

He told newsmen on Thursday in Abuja that the 27 Rivers lawmakers currently in a bitter political struggle with Gov. Siminalayi Fubara were also not members of the APC.

“People say Wike has decamped to the APC. They also say that the 27 lawmakers currently fighting with Fubara have defected to the APC.

“I need to make this clear to everyone. Much as I wish to have them in my fold, none of them has agreed to join us.

“I am the one that should  know if they did. But, clearly, they have not.

“What the lawmakers did was a political gimmick.

“I tried to woo them, but they kept vacillating and did not.

“To defect, they must go to their wards, register and get their membership cards. None  of them has done that,” he said.

Okocha was particularly categorical in declaring that Wike would not leave the PDP.

“Wike will never leave the  PDP.

“He has always said that PDP made him what he is. He has always said that he would remain there.

“He is an ardent believer in PDP. He is not likely to leave that group,” Okocha said.

He, however, said that Wike is a member of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“In Rivers, I am 001 in APC, but in the Renewed Hope Agenda, I am 002. Wike is 001,” he explained.

He also spoke on Wike’s influence on Rivers’ politics

“Wike has done so much for Rivers, so he is strong.

“In the next 10 years, Wike will continue to influence the political direction in Rivers.

“It will be difficult to uproot him.

“Aside from his many projects scattered throughout the state, he has touched people’s lives directly. Such people will always be behind him,” he said.

He described Wike as a politician that could identify with every good cause irrespective of political party.

“Once the cause is good and will give him a platform to serve his people, Wike will be part of it,” Okocha said.(NAN)

Gov Fubara’s judicial panel a witch hunt – Rivers APC chair

881 total views today

By Angela Atabo

Dr Tony Okocha, Acting Chairman of the All Progressive Congress(APC), in Rivers, has described the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the burning of local government offices as “an attempt to witch hunt”.

“The Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the bombing of Local Government offices is just a witch hunt.

“The governor merely wants to use it to deal with his perceived enemies,” Okocha told newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that Gov Siminalayi Fubara recently  inaugurated the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the arson, killings and destruction at various local government council secretariats in the state.

The seven-member panel, which has one month to conclude its assignment, has Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri as Chairman and Mrs. Inyingi Brown as Secretary.

It is expected to investigate the attacks and burning of local government councils’ secretariats on October 7, 2024, shortly after newly elected local government officers were sworn in.

Okocha, while faulting the governor’s action, said that there was no sincerity in it.

“The said election itself was illegal and, thus, a nullity.

“The governor has said that he knows the people that attacked the local government secretariats.

“If he knows the people, why not just ask the Police to arrest them? Why is he setting up a judicial commission of enquiry?”.

Okocha said that he would take the probe seriously if it is stretched  to include all issues of arson that the state had suffered in the past.

“If the governor really wants justice, the terms of reference of the commission should be all-inclusive.

“All issues of bombing should be probed. The House of Assembly bombing should be probed.

“We also want the bombing of the APC State headquarters to be probed. We do not want selective probes. We want to see genuine search for justice.

“Let’s have a full package  that involves all cases of arson. That is the only way the Rivers government can do justice,” he said.

On whether he would appear before the panel if invited to do so, Okocha said he would  appear before it “if it will probe all incidents of arson in Rivers”.

“Yes, I will appear before the panel if all cases of arson in Rivers are included in its assignment,” he said.

Okocha regretted that the state had become “a Rivers of trouble”, and blamed the situation on “the man who should protect everyone”.

“The governor is supposed to be the chief law officer, but he has failed in that crucial  task.

“We have a valid court judgement that stopped the local government election.

“It is that judgement that stopped the Police, security agencies and INEC from participating in the elections.

“Strangely, in spite of all, the governor went ahead with the elections. So, clearly, it is a nullity.”

On the cause of political upheavals in Rivers, Okocha declared that “Fubara is fighting himself”.

“The governor is fighting himself; the APC is only beginning to get strong now.

“We used to be just a social club as we have never won any election in Rivers.

“The PDP won the governorship seat in addition to the three Senate slots, the 12 seats in the House of Representatives and the 32 state assembly seats.

“So, it is one party fighting itself. The party was elected to serve, but what we are being served  is trouble,” he fumed.

He said 14 people aspired to govern the state on the PDP platform, but Fubara, “the least of them”, got the ticket and became governor.

“It means he was favoured over others. People were ignored in his favour and they are angry. Those are the people fighting him,” Okocha said.

The APC chairman expressed optimism that  Fubara’s squabble with his party would favour the APC in 2027.

“As the crisis festers, there is no project to Fubara’s name. He has not done anything to the Rivers people in close to two years.

“As a virile opposition, we are taking the governor on many issues.

“We want to demarket him so that we shall win the seat in 2027,” he said.

Okocha said that peace would have returned to Rivers State if Fubara had listened to President Bola Tinubu’s counsel.

“When Rivers was about to get burnt, President Tinubu stepped in to broker peace.

“He suggested that all court cases should be withdrawn and the Budget be re-presented before the House of Assembly.

“He also suggested that members of the House of Assembly should be given access to state matters.

“I recall that Fubara agreed and told Mr President that peace was priceless while terror was senseless, but we got a different thing when we returned home,” he said. (NAN)

Rep. Mathew empowers constituents with motorcycles to navigate economic hardship

By Philip Yatai

Rep. Donatus Mathew (LP – Kaduna), representing Kaura Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has distributed about 50 motorcycles to constituents as part of his economic empowerment programmes.

Mathews disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

He explained that the measure was to enable the beneficiaries to navigate through the current economic hardship being experienced across the country.

He identified some of the beneficiaries as mostly farmers, youths and other indigent constituents in dire need of sustainable means of livelihood.

“I have been living among my people in the village, so to some extent, I know some of their basic needs.

“We don’t have good roads to our farms; no good roads for economic activities to thrive, and no good roads to go to our markets.

“This made motorcycles a veritable means of transportation in rural communities,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the motorcycles would not only ease the movement of people but take farmers to their farms and enable them to evacuate their farm produce to their homes and markets.

For the unemployed youths in the local government area, Mathew said that the motorcycles would provide sustainable means of income and improve their standard of living.

“I am supporting the unemployed youth with motorcycles to have something to do.

“This will significantly cushion the effect of the present economic hardship being experienced in every part of the country,” he said.

Some of the motorcycles, procured by Rep. Donatus Mathew for distribution to constituents in Kagoro, Kaura Local Government Area.

He explained that 50 motorcycles were the first batch, adding that more would be procured and distributed to additional constituents.

Describing the gesture as “life-changing”, the lawmaker called on the constituents to embrace the Labour Party to enjoy more dividends of democracy.

He expressed the party’s commitment toward meeting the aspiration of the people through the implementation of various people-oriented programmes that impacted on the life of the common man.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Amai Christopher, said that the gesture had already changed his life for the better.

Christopher, a 2018 graduate of Physical Health Education from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, told NAN that the motorcycle has turned his life around.

He said that motorcycles, selling for between N1.2 million and N1.3 million, were beyond the reach of a common man and thanked the lawmaker for the gesture.

“I have been without a job since graduation and had to rely on farming a small piece of land to survive.

“Even the farming was not fruitful due to lack of capital to go beyond subsistence farming.

“The motorcycle is not only assisting me with mobility to go to the farm, but also serving as a sustainable means of income as I use it to transport people and their goods to various locations.

“I am really grateful to Mr Donatus Mathew, whom we fondly call “Digester”, for turning my life around,” he said. (NAN)

The Uba Sani Support Group has lauded Sadiq Mamman Lagos, Kaduna State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, for his commitment to good governance in Kaduna State.

The group, in a statement signed by Dr Victor Bobai, in Kaduna on Friday, described the commissioner, popularly called, Mamman Lagos, as “a pillar of support for Uba Sani’s vision in Kaduna State”.

“As we approach the 2027 elections, we wish to highlight the unwavering commitment of Sadiq Mamman Lagos to the leadership of Gov. Sani and the vision he has for Kaduna state.

“Recently, Mamman Lagos boldly declared that there is no vacancy in Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in 2027.

“This statement reinforces his loyalty and steadfastness toward Uba Sani’s administration.

“In a political climate that can often prioritise personal ambition over collective goals, Mamman Lagos stands out as a figure dedicated fully to the transformative policies instituted by Sani.

“His focus is not on personal gains but on ensuring the continuity of the governor’s impactful vision for the state.

“Any attempt to oppose this leadership will fail in view of the remarkable achievements of the Uba Sani administration,” it said.

The group further said: “At a recent flag-off event, Mamman Lagos proudly mobilised more than a million supporters, demonstrating significant grassroots backing for Uba Sani’s policies.

“This substantial show of unity among citizens echoes the commitment to progressive governance that is crucial for Kaduna State’s future.

“Noteworthy is the impressive array of infrastructure and rural development projects currently underway which serve as the bedrock of Uba Sani’s administration.

“These strides make a formidable foundation impervious to any political challenges.”

The statement also said that Mamman Lagos, as the commissioner for local government had passionately championed the cause of welfare, security and development for citizens of Kaduna.

Bobai reaffirmed the group’s commitment to Gov Sani’s policies targeted at a better life for the people.

“As we navigate the political landscape leading to the 2027 elections, we echo the sentiments expressed by Mamman Lagos that with Sani’s guidance, the future for Kaduna State is indeed promising.

“We stand united, ready to advance the voice of the people while fortifying the achievements and aspirations of the current administration.

“We reaffirm our commitment to Gov Sani’s vision, confident in the belief that together, we can foster a brighter, more prosperous Kaduna State for all,” Bobai said. (NAN)

APC’s unity, organised structure enhancing its credibility among voters – Coalition

413 total views today

By Ezra Musa

The Coalition of Kaduna Political Groups says the unity and well-organised structure of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has enhanced its perception as a credible party among voters.

The coalition stated this in a statement signed by its Co-conveners, Mr Ibrahim Kachia and Solomon Maiyaki.

Other signatories included Dr Victor Bobai, Public Relation Officer, Mrs Blessing Daniel, Secretary General, and Hajiya Aisha Zango, Women Leader.

In the statement issued in Kaduna on Saturday, the group said that APC had demonstrated a more organised internal structure, enabling it to respond effectively to pressing national challenges.

“The APC has positioned itself as a party of development, actively promoting inclusive governance and policies that reflect the needs of the people.

“This proactive engagement enhances the APC’s appeal as voters seek a party that not only acknowledges their concerns, but also endeavours to address them effectively.

“Also, the APC’s focus on infrastructure development and economic innovation resonates with Nigerians’ quest for initiatives that would improve their lot.

“The positioning of the APC as a party of change has also attracted voters seeking good governance,” it said.

The coalition expressed concern about the current state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as an opposition party and its implications for Nigerian politics.

It particularly said that PDP’s internal struggles, leadership crisis, among other challenges, have raised significant questions about its viability as a credible opposition party.

It added that the outcome of past elections, particularly the recent governorship election in Edo, has illustrated the precarious state of the party.

“Also, recent developments in Kaduna State, particularly in Southern Kaduna, have underscored the growing decline of the party’s influence.

“The departure of prominent figures and their supporters from the party highlights an urgent need for re-evaluation.

“Notably, the exit of notable figures, such as Sen. Shehu Sani, along with 10,000 supporters, signals an alarming trend.

“This dissatisfaction is prompting political migration towards the APC,” it noted.

The coalition further said that the political landscape in southern Kaduna, where the PDP had enjoyed massive support since 1999, might soon change.

It expressed concern that political figures like Sen. Danjuma Laah, Mr Andrew Yakubu, Joseph Gumbari, and thousands of their supporters, might consider leaving the party.

It blamed the declining popularity of the PDP in the region on the party’s failure to present a unified front, effectively address internal conflicts, and provide tangible benefits to its supporters.

“On the other hand, the APC’s ability to rally its members around common goals has positioned it favourably to capitalise on the PDP’s internal fragmentation to hold on to power as the ruling party,” it said.

The coalition advised politicians and the electorate in southern Kaduna to embrace the APC for development, cashing in on President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda and Gov. Uba Sani’s rural transformation initiatives.

“The decision to remain loyal to the PDP should not be dictated by sentiment; rather, the focus must shift toward tangible benefits.

“Embracing change and aligning with parties that offer genuine governance opportunities may very well determine the future of political representation in the region.

“It is time for the vibrant youth and women of southern Kaduna to strategise collectively, strengthening the APC as a vehicle for real progress and development.

“The time for change is now, and we must prioritise tangible benefits over sentiment. Let us work together to build a better future for our region and Nigeria as a whole,” it said.

On the feasibility of the PDP to regain its position as a viable opposition party or even win election, the coalition advised it to pay attention to accountability and inclusion.

“The PDP can only rebuild its connection with the electorate if it demonstrates a high level of responsibility, strong leadership and presents a united front,” the group said. (NAN)

The passage of the bill followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Special Duties presented by the Chairman, Sen. Kaka Shehu (APC-Borno).

Shehu, in his presentation said the bill was designed to drive the socio-economic development of South West.

“If the Commission is established through presidential assent to the bill, it will like other development – driven commissions established on zonal basis.

“It will receive funds from the federation account, donations from development partners, among others, to address infrastructural deficits and tackle ecological problems in the region,” he said.

Senate, after Shehu’s presentation accordingly resolved into committee of the whole for clause by clause consideration of the bill, after which it was read for the third time.

Deputy President of Senate, Sen.
Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano), who presided plenary after passage of the bill commended Sen. Kaka-led committee for processing the bill.

Barau said the South West Development Commission like other ones, recently established, would address the infrastructural and ecological challenges in the South West.

“The essence of the various development commissions being set up , is to fast track development of the entire country.

“President Bola Tinubu has assented to similar bills passed for zonal development – driven interventions and will surely assent to this one, ” he said. (NAN)
