The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum has declared that the party will not join or merge with any other political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Chairman of the forum, Gov. Muhammed Bala of Bauchi State, stated this on Monday, at the end of its meeting, held in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.

Reading the group’s communique after the meeting, Bala said that the PDP governors resolved that the party would not join any coalition or merger.

He, however, said that PDP as a major opposition party would welcome any party, association or group that was willing to join it, with a view to wrestle power and enthrone good leadership in 2027.

Bala, who was flanked by other PDP governors when reading the communique, equally stated that the forum reaffirmed its position taken in Asaba on the issue of the national secretary of the party.

He said  “that on the wake of the Supreme Court judgment the forum resolved to recommend the Publicity Secretary of the party to act as the national secretary.

“Pending the nomination and ratification of substantive national secretary from the South East Zone by NEC at its next meeting.”

The chairman further stated that the forum reasserted its collective determination to approach the Supreme Court to give a clear verdict on the interpretation of the provision of the law on the declaration of State of Emergency in any state of the federation.

“The forum, therefore, reiterates its solidarity with His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, on the ordeal in which he and his people are being plunged into by the declaration of State of Emergency.

“And we reiterate our commitment to stand with him to the end,” he stated.

The forum also raised concern over alarming worsening security situation in some parts of the country, especially in Borno, Plateau, Katsina and Edo States.

Bala disclosed that the forum called for review and reordering of priorities and strategies of security agencies that would guaranty improved security across the country.

The forum commiserated with the people of Plateau over the loss of lives in the recent attack in the state.

The chairman of the forum further made it known that the NEC meeting of the party would hold on May 27, “having resolved with the National Working Committee and other relevant organs of the party.”

He explained that zoning committees would be constituted during the May 27 meeting, with a view to addressing all issues relating to running of the party offices.

The chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum said that the convention of the party would be held on Aug 20, “precisely on the 20th, 29th and 30th in the ancient city of Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that present at the meeting were Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu); Agbu Kefas (Taraba); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Ademola Adeleke (Osun); Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa) and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Presidency disclaims 2027 campaign billboards

By Salif Atojoko

The Presidency says it has observed the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Worth noting is that some of these billboards with pictures of the President and his wife, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, emblazoned on them are springing up in Abuja and Kano in particular,” Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday.

While Tinubu and Shettima greatly appreciated their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support, the two leaders did not support any campaign that breached the laws of the land, continued the statement.

It added that the electoral law guiding the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbade any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections.

“Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.

“As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel,” said the statement.

The President, therefore, called on individuals and groups funding the 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately.

“President Tinubu and his deputy are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building they have set for themselves.

“This commitment is evident in their focus on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.

“When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans,” concluded the statement. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Buhari receives APC governors, urges adoption of citizen-centric approach to governance

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has urged state governors to adopt a citizen-centric approach to governance.

This is contained in a statement issued by Buhari’s former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday.

Shehu quoted the former president as giving the advice while receiving members of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) at his Kaduna residence.

According to him, leadership presents both challenge and opportunity, stressing that balancing the two will significantly advance the country’s progress.

Buhari also advised leaders to accord importance to the welfare of the people rather than themselves.

He cited his personal example of leaving office with the same physical assets he had before he became president.

Buhari expressed confidence in the progress being made by the governors elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), reiterating his call for continued dedication to the nation’s progress.

He thanked the governors for the visit, saying that while he had worked with several of them, some others were new to him.

Buhari also appreciated the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for renovating his home in Kaduna, saying while the building looked very much the same externally, so much improvement was made inside.

In his remarks, Chairman of PGF, Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo, said that their visit was to greet the former president on the occasion of the recent Eid-el-Fitr.

Uzodinma said that the visit was also to convey the governors’ gratitude and enduring respect to Buhari for his immense contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and strengthening of APC.

“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity direction.

“We are especially gratified to hear your public affirmation, only a few weeks ago, that APC remains your party of choice. That declaration could not have come at a better time.

“It reaffirmed your place as a pillar of our movement and provided reassurance to members of our party. Mr President, you are pan-Nigerian,” he said.

Uzodinma further stated that Buhari’s legacy in Nigeria’s history was secure, adding that he remained the only opposition candidate in the country’s history to have defeated an incumbent.

“You did not only win power, you governed with calm resolve and handed over, with honour, to another APC president. For this, we are extremely grateful,” he said.

Uzodinma stated that the Buhari-led administration gave expression to APC’s core principles through his focus on security, economic recovery and anti-corruption.

“Your efforts reclaimed territory from insurgents, extended social investment programmes, like the Conditional Cash Transfer and School Feeding Programme, and ushered in road and rail revolution that is still bearing fruit.

“Programmes such as the Anchor Borrowers Scheme directly impacted on food security.

“You taught us to produce what we eat and eat what we produce. You brought dignity to governance and deepened the progressive ethos of our party,” he said.

Uzodinma said that today, APC was being renewed and repositioned under Buhari’s worthy successor, Tinubu.

He described Tinubu’s leadership as bold, reform-driven and unshakably committed to progress.

The governor said that the former president’s public endorsement of Tinubu in his recent birthday message was a powerful symbol of continuity and humility.

“Your Excellency, today we honor you, not just for your past service but for the enduring values you represent.

“We ask you to continue to support and guide us as we take the next steps to deepen progressive politics across the nation, and ensure that APC continues to be in power for a more prosperous Nigeria,” Uzodinma said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ukachukwu was declared the winner of the party’s governorship primary election in the early hours of Sunday morning by the Chairman of the Election Committee and Returning Officer, Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River.

The election, which commenced on Saturday at the Women Development Centre, Awka, was contested by four aspirants.

Declaring the result of the exercise, Otu announced that Ukachukwu polled 1,455 votes to beat his closest rival, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, who scored 67 votes.

He thanked the party faithful and aspirants for their resilience and loyalty to ensure the success of the exercise.

The governor also thanked the security agencies, journalists and election observers, who stayed awake all night to ensure free, fair and peaceful election.

The State Chairman of APC, Mr Basil Ejidike, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the primary election.

Ejidike said that there was no violence during the exercise, as reported in some sections of the media.

He said that withdrawing from the race, as done by some aspirants, was by choice and also their constitutional right.

“This was part of why we decided to adopt indirect election in order to involve our members at the grassroots,” he said.

In a response, Ukachukwu promised to carry all the party members along in order to win the governorship election.

“As it stands now, I cannot do it alone without you.

“Therefore, I need your support, prayers and we have to work hard to win the governorship election,” he said.

Investments and Securities Act paves way for $1trn economy – Izunaso

By Naomi Sharang

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Capital Market, Sen. Osita Izunaso, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) into law.

He said that the signing of the Investments and Securities Act (ISA), had set the stage for the 1 trillion dollar economy proposed by Tinubu’s administration.

Izunaso gave the assurance in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Izunaso had sponsored the Bill on the repeal and reenactment of the ISA which was signed by President Tinubu in March.

Tinubu had during his 2023 Presidential campaigns promised to build a jumbo-sized economy, aiming for a 1 trillion dollar GDP by 2030.

Speaking to newsmen, Izunaso also said that with the law in place, there would be an end to all forms of ponzi schemes in Nigeria but grow the digital assets as well as cryptocurrency

He said, “The Investment and Securities Act that has just been signed by Mr President is a holistic enactment.

“Because we repealed the 2007 ISA and re-enacted it in 2025 with the aim of resetting the entire investment and securities law in Nigeria.

“With what we have done, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, the digital assets as well as cryptocurrency has now been recognised as a form of security in Nigeria.

“This means that people can now trade with digital assets, people can now do cryptocurrency and it will be properly regulated by Securities and Exchange Commission.

“What it means is that the virtual asset services providers as well as the digital asset operators are today under the purview of SEC.”

According to Izunaso, Nigeria is about the second or the third globally in terms of cryptocurrency, saying that a lot of money had passed through the country without it being regulated.

He said, “Today, Mr President is talking about $1 trillion economy. By signing this Act into law, it means that Nigeria is set for that $1 trillion economy.

“If we want to achieve the $1 trillion economy that Mr President is envisaging, we must promote both the money market and the capital market.

“So today, the capital market has been reset for that purpose.

“I would also like to make it clear that the days of ponzi insider trading and market manipulations are over in Nigeria.

“Today, if you are caught in a ponzi market arrangement, you risk going to jail for 10 years.

“And you will in addition pay a fine of between N20 million to N40 million and all the money that you took from people will also be recovered from you.

“We have classified exchanges into two: You now have composite exchange and non-composite.

“Composite means that you can do multiple trading while non-composite is about single security trading. So the whole idea is to enhance proper market regulation and also mitigate risk.

“So this new law is now promoting investors’ confidence, repositioning Nigeria because hitherto, the ISA of 2007 was not in compliance with the International Organisation for Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

“The new law is now arranged in a manner that is now consistent with IOSCO standards and regulations.

“So you can trade anywhere now in Nigeria internationally, taking it from the records that is known.

“Not the records that are not known as we were doing it before. So there are so many areas.

“Today, we are making it more transparent for you to operate in the capital market,” he said.

The Senator also added that with the new law, the sub-nationals could now approach the capital market for long-term loans to finance their projects.

“With the new law, states and local governments can approach capital market for long-term funding.

“Instead of relying on federation accounts and commercial borrowing, states and the 774 LGAs can now go to capital market for long-term funding for projects,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
