The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division, under its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department.

The commission disclosed this through Mr Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, on Thursday in Abuja.

Olumekun said that the division was to allow the commission to continue to harness the positive aspects of AI and mitigate its negative impact on elections.

He said that the commission at its Thursday regular weekly meeting, among other issues, considered the increasing relevance of AI to elections and electoral activities in Nigeria and across the world.

The national commissioner said that recently, INEC attended several conferences with colleagues around the continent, on the impact of AI on elections.

He said that the interactions were not only motivated by the concern over the use of AI to spread fake news or manipulate content online, but also to utilise its benefits for data-driven decision-making, risk detection and mitigation.

Olumekun said that AI had also helped in deepening voter services automation and geo-spatial intelligence, in support of logistic optimisation for better material distribution and polling unit allocation.

“Consequently, the commission approved the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Division under the ICT Department, to continue to harness the positive aspects of AI and mitigate its negative impact on elections.

“The division will enable the commission to better coordinate and maximise existing technology investments, through centralised AI governance.

“It will also enhance decision-making through data-driven insights, risk management and voter engagement.

“Furthermore, it will strengthen electoral credibility through predictive analytics, automation and intelligent safeguards,” he said.

Olumekun said that the initiative put the commission in the forefront of institutionalising AI capabilities within its ICT infrastructure.

He also described it as an important step in INEC’s ongoing reform of the electoral process, in areas that only required administrative action by the commission. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu not controlled by Cabal – FG

The Federal Government has refuted insinuations in certain quarters that President Bola Tinubu is being controlled by cabal and shadowy inner circle in his government.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, denied this in Abuja on Thursday while delivering an address at the APC National Summit with the theme “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far.”

The minister said that the President, rather, welcomed a wide range of perspectives, and took informed decisions solely in the best interest of Nigeria.

“You need to study the president very well. You can have your voice; you can say what you want to say; he will listen to you but his decision is ultimately his own. I think it’s important for us to recognise that,” he said.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, Idris said President Tinubu remained committed to transforming Nigeria through the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a bold, people-first blueprint turning obstacles into opportunities.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about positively impacting the lives of the people of Nigeria through bold decisions designed to unleash the full scale of Nigerian potential, in a way that has never been seen or done before,” he said.

The minister recalled that Tinubu inherited a nation at a crossroads and immediately moved with clarity and courage.

“Among the first decisions the President made were the removal of petrol and foreign exchange subsidies, which had been amongst the biggest impediments to Nigeria’s progress, costing us billions of dollars in losses and waste,” he said.

Idris noted that “true leadership involves the ability to make decisions that might be tough in the short term, but are guaranteed to deliver lasting returns.’”

He said the outcomes of the president’s reforms were now evident across all sectors through large-scale infrastructure, social investment programmes, revamping of the nation’s mining and petroleum sectors among others.

“At the federal level, the increased revenues have set a new standard for ambition and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects,” Idris said.

He highlighted four signature highways — the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Calabar-Abuja Superhighway, and Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Highway.

Idris said the four signature highways totalled more than 2,600km and linked communities and economies across the country.

“Another flagship project driving regional integration is the Kano-Kaduna Standard Gauge Railway.

“This vital corridor is a key component of the Lagos-Kano railway modernisation plan and is being delivered as a priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

In the housing sector, the minister said the administration launched the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Projects, “an ambitious intervention aimed at addressing the nation’s housing deficit while stimulating job creation and urban renewal.”

To support the growing digital economy, Idris said that the Federal Government deployed 90,000km of fibre optic cable nationwide.

He described the on-going project as “unprecedented scale of broadband infrastructure which will not only bridge Nigeria’s digital divide but also support smart governance.

He added that the fibre optical cable project would attract digital investments, and enable secure e-services in education, healthcare, commerce, etc.

Idris said about 300,000 Nigerian students are now benefitting from the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), while workers are accessing the new Consumer Credit Scheme to buy essential goods.

On security, Idris said, the military neutralised and arrested thousands of terrorists and bandits and rescued nearly 10,000 hostages.

He said, more than 25 new aircraft had been acquired, and the Navy had taken delivery of four new vessels.

He hailed the president for establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development and Regional Development Commissions across the six geo-political zones.

President Bola Tinubu has attributed the growing support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to its achievements in less than two years in office, assuring Nigerians that the country will not become a one-party state.

At the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit, held at the State House Conference Centre on Thursday, Tinubu addressed party leaders, the National Working Committee, the leadership of the National Assembly, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, which comprises 22 governors.

All collectively endorsed him for a second term.

“A one-party system is not suitable for democracy. We are one party ruling and carrying on with the aspirations of Nigerians. You don’t expect people to remain in a sinking ship without a life jacket.

“I am happy with what we have accomplished and expecting more people to come; that’s the game,” he said.

President Tinubu said citizens had the constitutional right to choose between associations.

“I thank every one of you. I am thoroughly inspired. We are just halfway through the journey that started 24 months ago,” he said.

The President thanked members of the Federal Executive Council for courageously pursuing the vision of a better Nigeria.

He also thanked the party’s leadership and National Assembly for their support.

“Together, we pledged to confront Nigeria’s challenges head-on by rebuilding the trust, fostering prosperity and restoring our nation’s economic quest.

“Today, I am proud to affirm that our economic reforms are working. Nothing good comes easy in life. All of you have been through life, and sometimes, only hard decisions can make things easy in the future.

“Through our Renewed Hope Agenda, our administration pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift our people out of poverty.

“How fast could you have rebuilt this country? If you allow the arbitrage in the exchange rate to continue, that is the grandfather of corruption. You could see the EFCC recover over seven hundred and fifty-something houses from one person,” he said.

The President admitted that the reforms were tough decisions but assured Nigerians they were necessary.

“Yes, we encountered challenges when we assumed office in May 2023, but we have made progress by implementing difficult, long overdue but necessary economic reforms.

“We have eliminated the arbitrage-driven multiple foreign exchanges, and our far-reaching tax reforms are coming.

“Because of the reforms, our country now attracts foreign direct investments that will ultimately create jobs and produce much-needed goods and services that will significantly improve the standard of living of our people,” he said.

The APC convened the summit to review the administration’s two-year performance across key economic sectors.

The President said his administration’s focus on economic reforms for long-term gains had continued to receive positive reviews from within and outside the country. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday urged party members to resist internal sabotage and remain focused on national progress.

He made the call at the APC National Summit, held at the Presidential Villa’s Banquet Hall, with the theme ‘The Journey So Far.’

The summit aimed to reflect on the party’s progress and explore solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

“I urge all members to reject internal sabotage. Engage communities, listen to citizens, and build a political structure that lasts beyond elections,” Ganduje said.

He called for renewed dedication to the principles that united the party and inspired its formation.

“Let us rally behind President Bola Tinubu, support our policies, and deliver the Renewed Hope Nigerians rightfully deserve,” he added.

Ganduje described the APC as a movement of courage and conviction, representing over 200 million Nigerians.

He emphasised that under his leadership, the APC had been reformed, energised, and steadily expanding.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is already fulfilling its promises,” he stated.

According to Ganduje, Nigeria’s future depends on a strong, stable, and progressive APC.

He urged members to move forward together — not merely as politicians, but as patriots and national stewards.

“Remain focused and ready for the journey ahead. Our vision needs political strength and unity,” he said.

He encouraged steadfastness, unity of purpose, and firm belief in the party’s shared vision.

Ganduje expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for achievements recorded under the Renewed Hope Agenda in the last two years.

He confirmed the APC’s endorsement of President Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate.

Ganduje reiterated that the APC was a people-driven movement grounded in bold ideals and national aspirations.

He said, “Our party’s strength lies in unity. Nigeria needs every one of you.

“Let us remain committed to our purpose, unwavering in our resolve, and clear in our vision.”

Ganduje said the summit was not only for dialogue, but also for introspection on the party’s journey and national responsibilities.

He described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a necessary and transformative plan proposed by the President.

“This is no mere slogan — it’s a comprehensive strategy to restore governance, economic vitality, and national pride.

“When President Tinubu spoke of Renewed Hope, he offered a serious contract with Nigerians.

“It’s a vision for inclusive growth, institutional reform, and economic rejuvenation.

“Nearly two years on, this vision is becoming a lived reality,” Ganduje said.

He urged APC members to become committed defenders and active promoters of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

As progressives, Ganduje said, they must embrace courage, sacrifice, and sustained commitment to long-term change.

He noted signs of economic recovery, improved oil revenues, and growing interest from international investors. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra has rejected any planned political coalitions with other political parties and strongly advises its members and stakeholders to steer clear of such coalitions.

The party made this known in a communique issued at the end of an enlarged meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting.

The communique was signed by the Chairman of the party Anambra, Chidi Chidebe.

The party said the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP was not engaged in any coalition discussions with any political party and consequently, the PDP in Anambra was not involved in any coalition talks.

The party called on party faithful to remain focused, resolute, and unwavering in their support for the efforts of the national leadership, the Board of Trustees, PDP Governors’ Forum, and other stakeholders who were working to reposition the party.

“We strongly advice our members and stakeholders to steer clear of such activities, as they lack legitimacy, approval, or endorsement from the leadership of the party at both the state and national levels.

“As the saying goes, no man abandons his house because of weed, we continue to pray that any man or woman raised and nurtured by this party whose intention is now to destroy it shall be put to shame,” it said.

“Consequently, any office such an individual occupies shall be declared vacant with immediate effect.

“SEC remains committed to upholding party discipline, unity, and the democratic values of the PDP, we urge members to remain vigilant, loyal, and focused as we collectively work towards a rejuvenated and victorious party,” it said (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Senate summons NAFDAC over unwholesome fruit ripening practices

Senate summons NAFDAC over unwholesome fruit ripening practices

Senate on Wednesday summoned National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to explain unchecked use of harmful chemicals by fruit vendors to hasten the ripening of fruits.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved by Sen. Anthony Ani (APC-Ebonyi) during plenary in Abuja.

The motion is titled “Urgent Need to Investigate and Halt the Continuous Unwholesome Practice of Chemical Ripening of Fruits in Nigeria.”

Ani lamented that the increasing trend of chemically-induced ripening, is a “dangerous deviation from natural ways for fruits to ripen”.

He explained that while fruits which naturally ripped have better sweetness, texture and nutritional content, many vendors now turned to harmful agents to force the process and improve appearance for commercial gains.

“Ethylene and methyl jasmonate may be considered relatively safe,” Ani noted.

He, however, added that the problem lies with the widespread use of substances like calcium carbide, ethephon and ethylene glyco-chemicals laced with toxic residues including lead and arsenic.

The lawmaker warned that these substances are known to cause severe health problems such as cancer, kidney damage, liver failure, neurological disorders and in extreme cases, death.

Ani attributed the spread of the practice to profit-driven motives and lack of awareness among fruit vendors.

“People are unknowingly eating poison masked in the form of ripened fruits,” he said.

The senator also criticised the failure of regulatory enforcement by relevant agencies, stating that many countries have outlawed such chemicals, while Nigeria lagged behind in implementing effective measures.

The Senate, however, resolved for NAFDAC management to appear before the Committees on Health and Agriculture to detail it on its current interventions and outline future steps to combat chemical ripening.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) were directed to investigate the matter and initiate urgent action.

It also mandated NAFDAC and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to increase public education on the health risks associated with artificially ripened fruits.

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and Nigerian Customs Service were equally tasked with stricter inspections on imported fruits especially apples to ensure they are free of harmful preservatives.

The Senate Committee on Legal Matters was instructed to begin reviewing existing laws to introduce stiffer penalties for violators.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio stressed that safeguarding public health must remain a top priority.

He warned that the country’s fruit markets must not become breeding grounds for toxic substances disguised as fresh produce. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NASS lauds Wike’s exceptional performance as FCT minister

NASS lauds Wike’s exceptional performance as FCT minister

The leadership and members of the National Assembly have lauded the exceptional performance of Mr Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The lawmakers gave the commendation when Wike appeared before them to defend the N1.78 trillion FCT Statutory Budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Sen. Ibrahim Bomai particularly commended Wike for the wonderful performance in just a short time as FCT minister along with the FCT Minister of State Dr Mariya Mahmoud.

Bomai also said he was impressed with the FCT’s 2025 revenue and fiscal framework saying, “this is the first time FCT is proposing to generate about N1.7 trillion.

“What FCT has presented is one of the best budgets so far.

“Also, the N608 billion projected Internally Generated Revenue for 2025 also shows a significant improvement,” he said.

Also, Sen. Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central, PDP), commended the minister for the comprehensive turnaround of Abuja as Nigeria’s capital city.

Ningi, who equates the current status of the FCT with Johannesburg and Cairo, however, urged the minister to do more in improving the security in the territory.

Similarly, Sen. Mohammed Ndume (Borno South APC) said: “Everybody that knows where Abuja was two years ago and what it is now, knows that you have done well.

“Even yesterday my friend told me that Wike is doing fine, and I said no, it is the Senate that is doing fine because without approving his budget, he cannot do anything”.

Ndume pledged the continued support of the Senate to enable him to succeed.

On his part, Sen. Osita Ozunaso (Imo West, APC) said that the FCT budget performance was commendable, particularly the reduction in personnel cost to allocate more funds to capital projects.

“Whenever we are sitting on budgets, people come here and they increase the personnel cost, but you have reduced the personnel cost in the 2025 proposed budget by N21 billion from the amount allocated in 2024.

“Secondly, you have more capital expenditure than recurrent. This is commendable,” Ozunaso said.

Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North, APC) described Wike as one of the best ministers under the APC administration.

Oshiomhole noted that too much money was being spent on overhead with very little available for infrastructure, “what Wike has done is worth noting and commending”.

He also commended the FCT minister for implementing specific programmes to bring life to rural communities in FCT.

This, he said, was the most potent statement to decongest the city, by taking development to the people where they live.

Also, Sen. Ireti Kingibe (FCT, LP), who had been very critical of Wike’s leadership style, also commended the minister for the visible performance which she said was undisputable.

Earlier, at the House of Representatives, the Chairman of the Committee on FCT, Rep. Muktar Betara, commended Wike for the ongoing transformation of the nation’s capital.

Other lawmakers took turns to applaud the exemplary performance and dedication of the FCT minister to deliver the dividend of democracy to FCT residents in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Earlier, Wike appealed to the lawmakers to approve the N1.78 trillion FCT Statutory Budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year.

He explained that out of the N1.78 trillion, N1.28 trillion was earmarked for capital projects, representing 72.3 per cent, while N494.1 billion was set aside for recurrent expenditure representing 27.7 per cent. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Bill to establish Medical Sciences varsity, Funtua, scales 2nd reading in Senate

A bill to establish Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Funtua, Katsina State, has scaled second reading in the Senate.

This followed the presentation of the lead debate by the sponsor of the bill, Sen. Muntari Dandutse, during plenary on Wednesday.

Leading the debate, Dandutse said that the bill was read for the first time on Feb. 6.

He said that the bill sought to, among other things, establish the university as a hub for inclusive learning, with particular focus on medical and health sciences.

“The university, when established, is to be located in Funtua, Katsina State.

“The choice of Funtua as the proposed site of the university is deliberate, as it is central and more accessible to neighbouring states like Zamfara, Sokoto and others.

“It is instructive to also note that among the three senatorial districts in Katsina State, Funtua senatorial zone is yet to have a tertiary institution established in it,” he said.

The senator further stated that the establishment of the specialised university would provide opportunities for Nigerians in the North-West zone and other parts of the country to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills in the medical field.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said that the financial support for the institution had already been provided by the governor of Katsina State.

“It means they won’t have issues of facilities and all that. Medical sciences, medical studies can be very costly and medical equipment can also be costly.

“But of course, judging from the preparation, we look forward to the outcome of the training of these children.

“And we pray that they will come out to assist Nigeria and Nigerians and the global community,” Akpabio said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
