The Democratic Front (TDF) has commended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to build a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling it a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja and jointly signed by the group’s Chairman, Malam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo.

TDF described the move as visionary and a bold step towards institutionalising democratic values in the country.

“The new INEC edifice reflects a strong message that democracy has come to stay. President Tinubu’s actions demonstrate a clear commitment to democratic development,” the statement read.

The group said Tinubu, in spite past persecution under military rule, has remained steadfast in advancing democratic ideals.

It noted that democracy in Nigeria has suffered from weak institutions and inconsistent application of democratic principles, adding that the president’s support for INEC enhances its independence and operational efficiency.

TDF also lauded Tinubu for recognising democracy heroes while excluding himself from the list, describing it as a sign of humility and statesmanship.

“Such selfless leadership builds public confidence and strengthens trust in the electoral process,” it said.

The group further noted that under Tinubu, INEC has received timely funding and technical support, which contributed to improved electoral outcomes in recent state elections in Imo, Edo, and Ondo.

“These elections were free from interference, reflecting true independence for INEC and setting the stage for a credible 2027 general election,” TDF stated.

The group called on Nigerians to support the president’s reforms, citing visible signs of economic recovery and democratic. (NAN)

Presidency debunks Lamido’s June 12 claims

The Presidency has strongly denied claims made by former Jigawa Governor, Sule Lamido, about President Bola Tinubu’s role in the annulled June 12, 1993 election.

In a statement titled ‘Setting the Record Straight’, Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, dismissed Lamido’s comments as false, revisionist, and historically dishonest.

Lamido had claimed during a television interview that Tinubu supported the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

“Alhaji Lamido’s claims represent a distortion of history and a regrettable attempt at revisionism,” Onanuga said.

Lamido alleged that Tinubu only gained prominence after NADECO was formed and claimed Tinubu’s mother backed the annulment.

The former Jigawa governor also claimed Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, Tinubu’s mother, mobilised market women to support the annulment of the election.

“These allegations are patently false,” Onanuga stated.

Onanuga insisted that Alhaja Mogaji never mobilised market women in support of the annulment.

“Had she done so, she would have lost her position as market leader in Lagos,” he added.

Onanuga acknowledged her relationship with Babangida but said it existed before the annulment crisis.

The Presidential aide accused Lamido of failing to defend MKO Abiola’s mandate as SDP National Secretary.

“Lamido, as SDP Secretary, failed to oppose the military’s injustice after Abiola’s election victory,” he said.

“The SDP leadership, including Lamido and Tony Anenih, shamefully surrendered the people’s mandate without resistance.

“Lamido and Anenih allied with the defeated NRC to deny Abiola his rightful mandate,” Onanuga alleged.

In contrast, Onanuga said Tinubu, who was then a senator, stood firm before Gen. Sani Abacha dissolved democratic structures on Nov. 17, 1993.

“Following Babangida’s decision to step aside on Aug. 27, 1993, Tinubu strongly opposed the annulment.

“On 19 Aug. 19, 1993, on the Senate floor, Tinubu condemned the annulment, calling it another coup d’état,” Onanuga stated.

He urged Nigerians then to resist injustice and lawlessness.

Tinubu, then representing Lagos West, said the annulment constituted another unconstitutional seizure of power.

“We cannot keep tolerating injustice and coup d’état from those funded by public money,” Tinubu warned.

Tinubu described the political crisis as self-inflicted, caused by the annulment of a free and fair election.

He said the government violated its own decree, committing a grave offence against its people.

Onanuga highlighted Tinubu’s major role in NADECO and international efforts like NALICON led by Prof. Wole Soyinka.

He said Tinubu’s backing of NADECO and other pro-democracy movements was crucial in challenging military dictatorship.

“Tinubu was a central figure in the June 12 struggle and a consistent supporter of democracy,” Onanuga added.

He said many NADECO leaders and journalists credited Tinubu for funding and sustaining the resistance.

Onanuga dismissed Lamido’s narrative as part of a political agenda from a so-called ‘Coalition of the Disgruntled’.

“The facts remain: Tinubu was — and remains — a defender of democracy, unlike Lamido, who capitulated,” Onanuga said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Senate Committee on Review of 1999 Constitution will hold public hearings on the proposed constitution amendments between July 4 and July 5 in all the six geo-political zones of the country.

Chairman of the committee and Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin, disclosed this through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, in Abuja on Sunday.

Barau said that the public hearings would hold simultaneously in Lagos (South-West), Enugu (South- East), Ikot Ekpene (South -South, Jos (North- Central) Maiduguri, (North-East) and Kano (North- West).

According to him, the zonal public hearings are convened to gather the inputs of citizens on the proposed amendments to the country’s constitution.

He said that the public hearings would examine critical national issues, including local government autonomy, electoral and judicial reforms, state creation, state police and inclusive governance.

Barau said one of the bills proposed the establishment of local government councils as a tier of government to guarantee their democratic existence and tenure.

This, he said, was part of a renewed push for full autonomy for all the 774 local government councils in the country.

Barau said that the second bill on local government reforms sought to create an independent National Local Government Electoral Commission (NALGEC) to organise, conduct and supervise local government elections.

“Also to be considered during the zonal public hearings are two bills on security and policing for the establishment of state police and state security council to coordinate internal security policies at the sub-national level.

“In the area of fiscal reforms, six bills are going to be considered, including the one to empower the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to enforce compliance of remittance of accruals into and disbursement of revenue from Federation Account,” he said.

The lawmaker further stated that a bill on fiscal reforms to alter the provisions of the constitution to specify period within which the president or governor of a state would present the appropriation bill before the national assembly or houses of assembly would be discussed at the hearing.

“The committee will also consider a bill to provide additional seats for women in the national and state houses of assembly.

“A bill for an act to alter the constitution to establish the National Council of Traditional Rulers, the State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Local Government Council of Traditional Rulers will also be considered,” he said.

Barau said that a proposal for amendment of the 1999 Constitution to allow for independent candidacy at all levels of election would also be discussed.

“This is just as a bill for diaspora voting to enfranchise Nigerians abroad has been listed for consideration.

“The hearing will consider over 20 bills seeking to overhaul the country’s judiciary, including timelines for judgment delivery and expanded jurisdiction for election tribunals.

“Proposals have been made to transfer items like labour and shipping from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list,” he added.

The senator said that the committee would also discuss 31 proposals on state creation, with five requests each from the South-West, South-South and North-Central geo-political zones.

According to him, the committee has received seven requests from the north-east, six from the north-west and three from the south-east for state creation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dream of Anioma State within reach, ignore detractors – Nwoko

Dream of Anioma State within reach, ignore detractors – Nwoko

Sen. Ned Nwoko (APC-Delta) says actualising an Anioma State is within reach, advising the Anioma people to ignore detractors.

Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District and Chairman, Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, on Saturday.

According to him, at this defining moment in the political and developmental journey of Anioma land, it is crucial for the people to remain focused, united, and visionary.

“Detractors, those who thrive on division, misinformation, and personal agendas must not be given room to derail the collective aspirations of Anioma.

“For decades, Anioma people have yearned for their own state; a place that reflects their identity, heritage, and need for equitable development.

“Today, with stronger political will and rising national conversations around state creation, the possibility is closer than ever.

“Listening to those who say it can’t be done or who seek to sabotage this vision is a disservice to the years of struggle and advocacy by Anioma’s founding leaders.”

The lawmaker noted that development doesn’t come overnight, adding that clear signs of progress were already visible.

“From improved representation at the national level to grassroots development efforts, Anioma is on the move. Detractors often attack what they cannot control or understand.

“Their aim is to distract the people from the real gains being made. This is the time to consolidate, not to allow envy and bitterness derail growth.

“Anioma’s strength lies in its unity. Detractors thrive in disunity because it weakens the collective voice. As we push for more federal recognition, development projects, lasting leadership, and internal cohesion is non-negotiable.

“When we stand together, no outsider or insider can divide our cause,” he said.

Nwoko further said the present generation has a chance to do what others only dreamt of.

“What legacy will Anioma leave behind? That we were distracted by petty politics, or that we stood firm and built a future for our children?

“Detractors will come and go but the impact of staying focused will last forever. Anioma people must be wise, discerning, and strong at this critical time.

“The path to greatness is never easy, and there will always be voices trying to pull us back. But our future is too important to gamble with.

“Let’s ignore the noise, hold on to the vision, and push forward—together. While detractors are busy spreading rumors, discrediting leaders, or promoting division, serious-minded Anioma sons and daughters are working day and night to move the region forward.

“Time spent arguing with saboteurs could be better used for planning, organising, and building. Let the detractors talk. Anioma must move forward,” the lawmaker stressed. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday officially received Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom into the All Progressives Congress (APC) and promised more support to the government.

Speaking at a grand reception in honour of Eno in Uyo, Tinubu said that APC would provide the needed support for the governor to deliver democracy dividends to Akwa Ibom people.

Represented by the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, Tinubu told Akwa Ibom people that the governor’s decision to join APC would be of immense benefit to the state.

“In APC we build bridges, and not walls. We mend fences, not destroying it. Our president is a bridge builder, your decision to join APC is one you can never regret.

“Be assured that you won’t be humiliated or forsaken, we are your brothers, we shall rise together. We are not an assemblage of politicians, we are a family.

“We will stand by you, as we stood by Godswill Akpabio, who went through fire because of our party. We are all with you, we shall succeed together,” he said.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said that the reception in honour of Eno was a reunification of the South-South states to the centre.

Akpabio said that Eno’s defection to APC was not just a defection but a movement to the progressive family, saying, “this move will bring more dividends of democracy to the state.

“What we have here today is not just a political movement, but political maturity. Eno has placed the peace and development of Akwa Ibom above party lines.

“We say welcome to the progressive family. We are convinced that you will add value and not only number to the family. We shall move from celebrations to collaborations.

“I see things turning around for good in Akwa Ibom, you are a man of your words, there is nothing anybody can do to you,” Akpabio said.

Earlier, Eno said that his move to APC was to align with the centre, and support Tinubu’s economic reform initiatives.

He said that the Ibom Deep Seaport project was part of his reasons for joining APC, and urged the president to support the state towards realising the project.

“We are not afraid to join APC, we know that with our new party, we will realise our Ibom Deep Seaport project, this is our plea.

“Akwa Ibom people look up to the president, we are hopeful that this movement will bring blessings to us,” Eno said.

He used the occasion to assure the president of Akwa Ibom peoples’ support to deliver democracy dividends to the nation and earn a second term in office.

Presenting APC flag to Eno, the National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, described the governor as “wise and foresighted”.

Ganduje urged Eno to remain focussed and committed towards implementing people-oriented programmes in the state.

It would be recalled that on June 6, Eno who was elected governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, announced his defection to the ruling APC. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Senate will monitor sector to sector implementation of 2025 Rivers’ budget for meaningful development, ensuring transparency, accountability in project execution to drive meaningful growth and progress in the state.

Chairman of the Senate Ad hoc Committee on Oversight of Rivers Emergency, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, made the pledge on Thursday in Abuja at defence of 2025 Budget of Rivers by the Sole Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.

Bamidele said it was the mandate of the committee to track how allocated resources are utilised project by project, sector by sector.

This, he said, was to guarantee transparency, uphold accountability in the use of public funds in the overriding public interest of the people.

“This committee carries a continuous oversight responsibility that goes beyond today’s defence session.

“As representatives of the Nigerian people, we are not only tasked with evaluating figures, but also with ensuring the faithful implementation of the budget.

“It is our mandate to track how allocated resources are utilised project by project, sector by sector to guarantee transparency and uphold accountability in the use of public funds.

“This means that our engagement today on the Rivers 2025 Appropriation Bill does not end here, in the coming months, we shall assess the performance of the budget by closely monitoring disbursements, execution timelines, and delivery outcomes.

“Our objective is to ensure that approved funds translate into meaningful development and that deviations or delays are addressed promptly in the overriding public interest.”

He said the committee, beyond the numbers would also evaluate the real-world impact of the budget on the everyday lives of the people of Rivers.

He said in times of political uncertainty and emergency governance, government actions must not only be lawful, but also people centred.

“We must ask, will this budget deliver improved roads, healthcare, education, safety, and livelihoods for the people, this, ultimately, is how we build trust in government and public institution like ours,” he said.

The senate majority leader said the committee must work to restore and strengthen governance through its recommendations and sustained legislative vigilance.

Bamidele said the structure of the 2025 Rivers budget clearly showed that more funds were budgeted for capital projects, saying that N1.72 trillion was budgeted for capital expenditure alone.

“This accounts for about 72.43 per cent of the total expenditure, also, a total sum of N408.412 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, invariably accounting for 27.56 per cent of the aggregate spending,” Bamidele said.

Bamidele said that the National Assembly was committed to democratic tenets and would ensure governance is preserved stating that the committee remained committed to national development and institutional integrity.

Ibas, in his presentation, said the overall budget reflects not just fiscal planning, but a strategic repositioning of Rivers for sustainable growth, social cohesion, and a renewed contract between government and its people.

He said the budget aligns with the strategic objectives outlined in the Rivers Development Plan of 2017-2027.

According to him, the 2025 N1.8trillon Rivers Government budget was designed to address the needs of the people of Rivers.

He said the budget proposal demonstrates a commitment to both immediate impact and long-term resilience through strategic allocations across critical sectors, such as works, agriculture, health, education. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ex-lawmaker urges political maturity, unity in Cross River

Ex-lawmaker urges political maturity, unity in Cross River

Mr Clement Obun, ex-lawmaker in the Cross River State House of Assembly and House of Representatives aspirant, has urged enhanced political maturity and mutual understanding among leaders and citizens of the state.

Obun made the call during an interview with members of the Cross River State Journalists Forum (CROSSJOF), Abuja Chapter, on Thursday.

He urged all stakeholders to avoid divisive politics and misrepresentation of roles within democratic institutions.

He also criticised the resurgence of what he termed “old political fault lines” reminiscent of those witnessed during Nigeria’s Second Republic, cautioning against harmful labels.

Obun stressed that the current tensions among political actors should not be mistaken for sabotage or internal conflict.

“What I see is anxiety, enthusiasm masquerading as struggle or conflict,” he explained, emphasising that healthy debate and disagreement were essential to any functional democracy.

According to him, political dynamics naturally evolve over time, and leaders must play calming roles, especially during periods of heightened tension.

He recalled how former Gov. Liyel Imoke was commended for transitioning from a “street mentality” to one of peacebuilding, reducing violence and division in the state.

Obun, a legal practitioner, also took the opportunity to educate the public on the constitutional responsibilities of parliamentarians, stressing that their role was not to physically construct roads or erect billboards.

“Parliamentarians are meant to influence and facilitate development by securing budgetary allocations and ensuring their release,” he said.

He highlighted poor budgetary implementation across many sectors, where actual releases often fell below 20 per cent, and urged lawmakers to focus on shaping effective policies and securing adequate funding.

Obun, therefore, called for unity and open dialogue.

“If you do not have arguments about methods of doing things, then that is no longer democracy. Democracy thrives on plurality, not just disagreements.

“We must return to the table, not the battlefield.”

He called for unity, understanding, and clarity of purpose, especially as Nigeria navigates complex political and economic challenges. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Benue Killings: PGF backs Tinubu’s stance on security

The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) has declared its full support for President Bola Tinubu’s response to the recent killings in Benue.

Chairman of the PGF and Gov. of Imo, Hope Uzodimma, made this known to newsmen in Abuja, after a meeting with some progressive governors.

He said that the Forum stood united with the President in his resolve to end violent attacks and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Tinubu had earlier on Wednesday, visited Benue to condole Gov. Hyacinth Alia over the killings in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of the state.

He said: “The Progressives Governors Forum is fully in support of President Tinubu’s position on the Benue killings”.

“We were in Benue State, first, to show solidarity to our colleague, the Governor of Benue State.

“To condole with him for that unfortunate incident and also, encourage Mr President in his efforts to address this situation in Benue State which continues to repeat itself.

“We are satisfied with the position of Mr President on his planned action to stop further killings and violence, not only in Benue State, but almost in every part of the country.

“Arising from that, we just rose from a meeting where we also discussed the state of the nation and the need for the sub-national governments to take security up to the rural communities.

“Henceforth, we must do everything, whatever it will take, to protect lives and property in Nigeria which is the primary essence of government”.

The governor also commended the President for all the strides and achievements he had recorded in two years.

“We are satisfied by the way he is going and in the very nearest future, Nigeria will come out of this and prosperity will become the order of the day.

“So we encourage all of us Nigerians and condole the families of those involved in the unfortunate incidents in the state and other parts of the country.

“And we are showing our people who voted us to power that we have buckled up and we have braced up.

“We are ensuring to provide to the security agencies everything that they require to ensure that every space, the governed and the ungoverned is adequately protected”.

On what is the Forum’s recommendation to the President, Uzodimma said “If you listened well to the President, he even recommended that he is willing to support Benue State to establish a ranch.

“I think what that goes to show is that to encourage harmonious relationships between herders and farmers so there will be a win-win situation.

“It is not meant to impute any motive or theory that will not encourage the unity of this country.

“We appreciate and commend the President for his speech and the position he has taken and the governor in his speech also recommended state police.

“There is no difference between state police and community police. So it is decentralising security.

“There will be a technical committee that will look at all the issues and put together a working paper for the governors going forward,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mr Ime Okon, the member, representing Ibiono Ibom/Itu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, says he attracted projects worth N1.7 billion to the constituency in the last two years.
Okon said this in Uyo while briefing newsmen on his midterm performance that apart from the projects, he had directly empowered no fewer than 800 members of his constituency.
He listed some of the projects he facilitated to include construction of six classroom blocks at Technical School, Ayadehe and four classroom blocks at PCN Primary School, North Itam, Itu Local Government Area.
The lawmaker also listed the construction of 1.5km Joshua Uwah St., installation of solar-powered streetlights and drainage system, in Mbak Itam III, Itu as other projects he facilitated.
Others are, the ultra-modern 450-capacity Civic Centre in Idoro and the 1000-capacity Civic Centre in Nkwa, Ibiono Ibom.
Okon said that he had continued to play active legislative roles through sponsorship of bills and motions in the last two years as a federal lawmaker.
“The bill to establish the Metallurgical and Material Engineers and Scientist Registration Board of Nigeria, is an example.
“I also moved a motion for the urgent rehabilitation of the Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene Road,” he said.
Okon, also the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Inter-Governmental Affairs, said that he had actively participated in several oversight activities during the period.
He said that N1 billion had been earmarked for the implementation of 2025 constituency projects, saying, ‘the projects will be handled by the relevant ministries, departments and agencies.’
