The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has called on Muslims to use the Ramadan period to support and empower the less privileged in the society.

Adeniyi made the call on Thursday evening in Abuja at the Al-Habibiyya Mosque breaking of fast (Iftar) and daily feeding of about 2, 500 fasting Muslims and less privileged.

He described the initiative as a reflection of Islamic teachings on caring for the less privileged, while calling on other organisations to emulate the laudable gesture.

“This is an injunction of Almighty Allah. This is what we should do during fasting; care for those that are less privileged through programmes like this.

“We should have more of these in different parts of the country because many people are fasting and wondering how they will break their fast.

”It is the reality of our times, and more Nigerians should be encouraged to undertake this noble cause in a disciplined manner,” he said.

The customs boss commended Al-Habibiyya for the orderliness in the feeding programme, stressing the need for Nigerians to embrace discipline, orderliness, and structured planning in their daily activities.

“There was a time in this country when we ran campaigns about doing things in an orderly fashion.

“We need to get back to that because it helps. Imagine how easy we  handled over 2,000 people in this little space because it was properly planned,” he said.

The National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyya Mosque, Sheik Fuad Adeyemi, said that the feeding programme was organised every Ramadan to support the less privileged, regardless of religious belief.

“It is important that we show support to the less privileged, that is why we organise this feeding programme on a daily basis throughout the Ramadan period.

“When the less privileged are supported and empowered there will be peace and unity in the society,” Adeyemi said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by Islamic scholars, faith-based organisations and Muslims from various backgrounds. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ash Wednesday: Priest tasks Christians on genuine repentance, generosity

A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Thomas Edogbanya, has urged Christians to use the period of Lent to enhance their closeness to God and help one another, especially the less privileged in the society.

Edogbanya, the Parish Priest of Saint Charles Lwanga Parish, Apo, Abuja, gave the advice in a sermon during the church’s Ash Wednesday service in Abuja.

The priest urged Christians to observe the tenets of Lent, including the act of genuine repentance and abstinence from any form of sin.

According to him, lent is a season of sober reflection and the journey of Jesus Christ to the cross and the sacrifice of humanity.

He explained that the church had set the solemn season aside for deep reflection and repentance through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

The priest said it was not enough to apply the ashes on the forehead alone, adding that the season required from every believer, a genuine repentance, holy living, and act of kindness to fellow humans.

“Ash Wednesday marks the best of the Christian liturgical season of Lent. It is a significant day for millions of Christians worldwide, symbolising repentance, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

“Ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross as the words, ‘remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return’ are spoken to us,” Edogbanya said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Catholic Television of Nigeria (CTV) has announced its migration to the GOtv platform, beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 5.

Rev. Fr. Patrick Alumuku, CTV Director of Communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, made this announcement at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Alumuku described the move as a milestone in the station’s journey, which began in 2009 with an initiative by Chief Raymond Dokpesi to provide the Catholic Church with a 24-hour broadcast channel.

“Though the initial plan to launch CTV on DAARSAT did not materialise, the station persevered, utilising Africa Independent Television (AIT) for its programming.

“CTV officially commenced operations on 1 January 2010 with a 15-minute devotional programme, A Light for the Nation, which continues to air on AIT.

“The station expanded its presence in 2017, launching a 24-hour test transmission on NigComSat and later joining the OUR TV platform in 2018”.

He said the migration to GOtv would enhance CTV’s reach, making Catholic content more accessible to households across Nigeria.

According to the CTV director, this transition is a step towards establishing a broader presence on multiple platforms, including DSTV and Startimes.

“CTV, owned by the Catholic Church in Nigeria, envisions setting up production centres in every diocese, with existing centres already in Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, and Kano.

“The station aims to provide faith-based programming while addressing national and international issues from a Catholic perspective”.

He added that CTV management had urged Catholics and business owners to support the channel’s growth through programme sponsorships, equipment donations, and advertising partnerships.

“The success of this channel depends on the participation of all Catholics.

“We invite everyone to join in this joyful migration to GOtv and contribute to sustaining this evangelisation project,” he said.

The CTV director also advised Nigerian media outlets to verify their sources before reporting, to prevent misinformation and embarrassment within the industry.

He cited the example of a false report about Pope Francis’ death, which spread widely in some media but was later debunked as fake news.

“In our Catholic media platform, we reach out to Rome to get the accurate status of the Pope’s health, rather than relying on unverified information from Nigeria,” he said.

He urged Nigerian media to uphold this standard for responsible and accurate reporting. (NAN) (www.nanews.ng)

As Christians and Muslims observe their sacred seasons of Lent and Ramadan, the Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, is calling for greater unity between the two faiths.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, Onaiyekan emphasised the shared values of both Christianity and Islam, particularly the belief in one merciful, all-powerful God.

He highlighted how both faiths held similar core principles, especially during times of fasting and prayer.

“Whether you are Christian or Muslim, we all believe in one God who is Almighty and merciful”.

Onaiyekan, noting the significance of the overlapping religious observances, highlighted that Muslims began their Ramadan on March 1, while Christians would begin their Lent on March 5 with Ash Wednesday

The cardinal urged believers to come together in prayer, fasting, and acts of charity during the unique overlap of Lent and Ramadan in 2025.

He called for unity between Christians and Muslims as they sought God’s mercy and engaged in spiritual reflection during these sacred seasons.

The cardinal acknowledged that though the two observances differ, their core principles were the same.

“Both Ramadan and Lent are times to draw closer to God, be more fervent in prayer, and help the poor.

“This year, as they coincide, it is a divine reminder for us to come together and pray for our nations,” he explained.

He also stressed the importance of religious leaders promoting unity in their communities

“Priests, bishops, and imams must encourage their followers to approach these seasons with sincerity and righteousness.

“Fasting without a genuine heart and purpose won’t lead to meaningful change,” he said.

Onaiyekan also emphasised that during this unique period, the collective prayers of faithful Muslims and Christians would be heard by God.

“This is an opportunity for us to unite in prayer for mercy and healing,” he added.(NAN)

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged Muslims to embrace sacrifice and self-denial as they begin the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Sanwo-Olu gave this advice during the Special Pre-Ramadan Prayer organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The event’s theme was: ‘My Lord, Indeed I Am, For Whatever Good, You Would Send Me, In Need’ (Q28:24).

The governor expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for gathering the people to observe the prayer that marks the beginning of Ramadan.

He emphasised the significance of the holy month, describing it as a time of sacrifice, self-denial, and supplication.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Ramadan unites Muslims daily as they break their fast, listen to God’s words, and remain in a state of prayer and grace.

He expressed confidence that the lectures and teachings during Ramadan would inspire and guide the people.

“It prepares their hearts and minds to receive the blessings of Ramadan,” he said.

The governor also highlighted Ramadan’s coincidence with the Christian Lent, stating that this convergence promotes unity, supplication, and devotion among people of faith.

“This is a time for us to come together in peace and harmony, allowing the season’s teachings to reflect in our relationships,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu prayed for divine guidance and support throughout Ramadan. “I pray God Almighty helps us all,” he added.

He encouraged them to embody Ramadan’s teachings in their attitudes and behaviour.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) will continue to strive in giving a transformative example for an ethical governance.

This is with the vision of reaffirming its commitment to the spiritual well-being of every Nigerian Pilgrim at the Holy Lands of Makkah and Madinah.

Muhammad Musa, NAHCON Head of Public Affairs, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Musa said that the commission has been striving for best services in its mission to secure a safe and spiritually fulfilling Hajj for the Nigerian Pilgrims.

‘’Its leadership has navigated a maze of bureaucratic red tape in an environment marked by relentless opposition, with a quest for transparency and reforms which has become a beacon of hope for millions of devoted believers.

‘’The journey towards meaningful change in Hajj management began with the courageous leadership of figures such as Sheikh Abubakar Mahmoud Gummi. (He was) targeted by a group of ethnic sheikhs, involved in defrauding Pilgrims.’’

He said that the new Chairman of the commission, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, has vowed to take up the mantle of reform with determination in collaboration with his team.

Musa said that Usman also pledged to introduce initiatives aimed at streamlining Hajj operations and safeguarding the interests of Nigerian Pilgrims.

‘’As usual, these progressive measures could provoke fierce backlash, smear campaigns and covert acts of sabotage that may derail progress and undermine public confidence in the reform movement.

‘’Against the odds, Professor Usman reiterated his determination to assert that only services commensurate to Pilgrims’ value for their money would be accepted because it is a sacred trust that must never be compromised.

‘’For the Nigerian Pilgrims, an efficiently managed Hajj industry is essential to ensuring a spiritually enriching Hajj experience.

‘’When the Hajj stakeholders operates with integrity, every Pilgrim embarks on their journey with confidence and dignity, assured that their sacred pilgrimage is handled with the utmost care and respect,’’ he said.

Musa said that the new reforms were not only simply a policy issue but a commitment to honour, responsibility and ethical governance.

He called for public support for these transformative changes, adding that it would empower every reform-minded leader to challenge entrenched negative practices.

Musa also urged government officials, Hajj managers, reform advocates and Pilgrims to unite in the pursuit of a system that honours both the spiritual and logistical dimensions of the pilgrimage.

‘’The journey towards comprehensive reform is fraught with peril, the promise of a more transparent and respectful Hajj continues to inspire change across Nigeria.

‘’This collective effort reinforces the NAHCON’s commitment to ethical governance and will ensure that the Hajj remains a spiritual journey defined by honour and collective responsibility,’’ Musa said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Al-Habibiyyah calls for proper Zakat disbursement to tackle poverty

Al-Habibiyyah calls for proper Zakat disbursement to tackle poverty

By Muhyideen Jimoh

The National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society (AIS), Sheik Fuad Adeyemi, has called for the proper disbursement of Zakat to help uplift Muslims from poverty.

Zakat, a mandatory almsgiving for eligible Muslims, requires them to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth annually if it exceeds a certain threshold.

This religious duty promotes solidarity by redistributing wealth to the poor.

Adeyemi made the call during the 4th National Zakat Day and the 14th Public Zakat Disbursement of the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society Zakat/Endowment Foundation.

The event, held in the Paduma Community in Abuja, witnessed the disbursement of N15 million in cash, education scholarships, and other empowerment items to 90 beneficiaries.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Imam explained that the disbursement aimed to alleviate poverty among Muslims and strengthen economic stability in the country.

He encouraged the recipients to invest the money and items wisely, so they could, in turn, contribute to Zakat disbursement in the future.

“There should be no poverty in Islam; it is just that many people are not giving their Zakat in the way Allah has instructed.

“This is why we organised this lecture to educate our Muslim community on the correct way to give Zakat and the significance of endowment in Islam,” the Imam said.

Adeyemi emphasised that the Zakat disbursement was done transparently, with beneficiaries properly screened according to the criteria set out in the Holy Qur’an.

“We ensured that all beneficiaries met the requirements, and no family member of the zakat committee benefited from this disbursement,” he said.

NAN reports that some of the items distributed to indigent Muslims at the occasion include: sewing machines, grinding machines, freezers and cash for business start-ups to 90 recipients.

The event themed, “Exploring Waqf (Endowment) for Sustainable Measures Against Poverty,” seeks to highlight the importance of endowments in supporting long-term poverty alleviation efforts.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
