The states are Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Niger, and Kaduna.

The opening ceremony, held on Sunday in Bauchi, marked the commencement of the week-long programme, scheduled to run from May 4 to May 10.

Speaking at the event, Malam Abdullahi Ismail, the Education Secretary of the Foundation, said the competition was aimed at promoting the correct recitation of the Qur’an as it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).

He said that the event was also to boost the morale and commitment of the Qur’anic students.

“The foundation initiated this annual Qur’anic Recitation Competition Musabaqa, which also includes components of Fiqh, Tauhid, and Sira, for students across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

“It is designed to deepen Islamic education and elevate Qur’anic literacy,” Ismail said.

He added that the annual event would continue to strengthen the foundation of Islamic education across the region.

Sheikh Tijjani Dahiru, a prominent Islamic scholar, encouraged students to adopt the Qur’an as their lifelong guide.

He emphasised the importance of its continuous recitation and memorisation for moral and spiritual development.

In his presentation, Dr Mujitapha Abdulkadir, called on the government and relevant stakeholders to support the initiative by establishing permanent centres to host participants and enhance the competition. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Rev. Fr. Ifeanyichukwu Uwabunkeonye, a US-based Catholic priest, has urged mothers and their children to always support their fathers in building their families especially at this austere time.

Uwabunkeonye, a Catholic Priest of St. Augustine, Francisco Parish, California, made the call during the 2025 Fathers’ Day Celebration at the Holy Family Parish, Ologo in Enugu North Local Government Area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Catholic Church set aside a Sunday in a year to celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds and the role of fathers in the family.

Uwabunkeonye celebrated the Holy Mass alongside the Parish Priest, Holy Family Parish, Ologo, Rev Fr. Christian Oji.

The clergyman acknowledged that most fathers faced a lot of challenges in maintaining and taking care of their families.

He said that fathers needed support from their immediate and extended families in performing their roles pointing out that many of them suffered and died in silence due to the burdens and lack of love.

He, however, charged fathers to embrace their challenges with happiness and patience in order to live longer.

“Today, I task fathers on patience and joy in carrying your family duties. Our prayer is that wives and children should support you.

“If you don’t put happiness in carrying out these responsibilities, they will bring you down. See fatherhood as leadership.

He, therefore, called on children to love their fathers and never abandon them in their old age.

“Fathers should also treat their wives and children in a manner that they will regard and respect them,” he said.

In a remark, the Chairman, Catholic Men Organisation (CMO), Holy Family Parish Ologo, Mr Hilary Ali, thanked the parishioners and Uwabunkeonye saying the parish had not had it so thrilling before.

He commended them for their massive support especially mothers who bought CMO uniforms for their husbands and a parishioner, Prof. Ignatius Maduka, for donating five pieces of the uniform to less privileged fathers.

Highlights of the celebration included special thanksgiving by Uwabunkeonye’s family, cutting of cake by fathers and their wives and drama presentation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Rise above adversities to accomplish your divine purpose, Ndukuba urges youths

Rise above adversities to accomplish your divine purpose, Ndukuba urges youths

The Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has urged the youth to keep hope alive and rise above adversities to accomplish their divine purpose.

Ndukuba made the call at the 5th Joshua Generation International Youth Conference themed “Ambassadors for Christ” in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 20,000 young people attended the conference.

The clergyman said, “Many youths are weighed down by unemployment, insecurity, corruption, moral decay, and the discouragement is widespread within the church and the society and many complain and lose heart.

“However, like Joshua and Caleb, you are called not to lose hope; instead, you must rise up and engage the challenges spiritually, socially, economically and politically.

“You must reach out to fellow youths, extending the hands of reconciliation, hope and courage. You are the hope of the church and the nation.

“Stand strong in your convictions; uphold righteousness in the midst of corruption, and defend truth when it is unpopular, reject vices that entangle your generation, keep hope alive, believing that with God, all things are possible.”

Ndukuba underscored the importance of faith in driving meaningful change, asserting that the power of God surpasses all earthly powers, including political and economic influence.

The clergyman, while citing 2 Corinthians 5:20, encouraged youths to remain steadfast in their faith in spite of the challenges facing Nigeria.

He said the youth should be ambassadors of Christ, reminding them of their potential to make positive impact.

“The Joshua Generation is not merely a name but a divine mandate; it represents the church’s mission to the youth and with the youth.

“It is a sacred call to mobilise and empower young Christians to become transformative leaders in both spiritual and socio-economic spheres.

“Inspired by the examples of Joshua and Caleb, who refused to be discouraged by the challenges before them, you, the youth of today, are called to rise to the challenges of your time.

You can lead the church, the nation and indeed the world into the full possession of God’s promises.”

Ndukuba advised youths to be doers and transformers like Joshua and Caleb by occupying the seven mountains of influence of religion, family, education, media and entertainment, economy and government.

“We want to lift the banner of the Lord Jesus, the word of God, the promises of He who by His power sustains His creation and He is also commissioning these young ones.

“We are trusting God that these young ones will not only stand up for themselves but also pull their friends, trust God and see the possibility of God, and this network will bring about a move and a change as the future of the family, church and nation.”

The primate added that it would take the power of God to unleash what God had prepared for them especially because of the challenges facing the nation.

“That was why the Joshua Generation was more than a conference but is a movement for empowering the next generation for destiny, and it has recorded some significant events.

He said more than 5,000 youths have committed to Christ and 3,000 were volunteering for missionary work and 400 persons had been trained for missions with 35 currently serving as full time missionaries.

Ndukuba added that 1,932 young people were trained in ICT, 50 young persons were trained in music academy, and junior and senior football teams were established with over 120 youths benefitting from the sport investment.

He said the aim was to have a N5 billion endowment fund for youth development in skills infrastructure and career advancement.

“We aim to expand global participation, fostering partnerships with international youth organisations.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Conclave begins election of next Pope May 7 – Vatican

Conclave begins election of next Pope May 7 – Vatican

The Conclave in the Vatican says it will begin the process of electing late Pope Francis’s successor by May 7.

The Vatican’s spokesman, Mr Matteo Bruni, said that the date was chosen during a closed-door meeting of the College of Cardinals and announced at a media briefing at the Vatican.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the death of Pope Francis has set the stage for an election of a new pope to oversee the running of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican said that the cardinals who would gather to elect the next pope must decide whether to continue the late pontiff’s vision of reforming the church to make it more open to the modern world or to initiate a course correction.

He noted that while there were a number of potential front-runners, there was no clear favourite and the race was generally considered to be wide open.

“The unpredictability of this conclave, as the gathering to elect the pope is known, adds a level of intrigue and suspense to the centuries-old process of picking the successor to St. Peter, the first Pope.

“The cardinals are gathering in general congregations, as the meetings are known, to make preparations for the election of a new pontiff.

“The meetings are crucial in determining the next pope because they involve frank discussions about the current and future needs of the Catholic Church.

“The process to select a new pope has already begun. Cardinals are meeting almost daily in pre-conclave gatherings.

The cardinals met earlier today (April 28) for the first time since the funeral and burial of Pope Francis on April 26.

“More than 180 cardinals attended the morning meeting, said Holy See Press spokesman.

“The general congregation meetings are open to all cardinals, but not all are eligible to vote or be voted for, for a new pope.

“To participate in the conclave, a cardinal must be under the age of 80. There are 135 eligible cardinal electors, 80 per cent of whom were elevated by Pope Francis.

“Although the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, has advised cardinals against speaking to the press, several cardinals have not been shy in expressing their wishes on a future pope,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

By Abiodun Abegunde

The Nigerian Baptist Convention has commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for taking practical steps towards repositioning the economy.

President of the convention, Rev. Israel Akanji, gave the commendation at a news conference on Friday in Lagos.

He said the administration’s economic reforms had been impactful, urging it to sustain efforts at further improving the economy.

Akanji also commended Tinubu as well as security agencies on their efforts towards improving security in the country.

While saying a lot still needed to be done to address insecurity, Akanji urged the government to convene a conference to discuss ways to tackle the security challenges in the country.

“Going by media reports, President Tinubu inherited a mismanaged economy, but I want to urge the Federal Government to continue to intensify efforts against insecurity.

“Insecurity in the country, as manifested in killings, kidnappings, has gotten to a worrisome level, despite renewed efforts to arrest the situation.

“While we commend our security agencies and their chiefs for a job well done, we urge them to do more.

“What we are seeing today are the consequences of the compromised security architecture inherited by the present administration.

“We call on the President to, as a matter of urgency, convene a national conference on security to find an end to the problem,” he said.

He commended the present administration for massively rehabilitating roads across the country.

Akanji urged states and local governments to replicate Federal Government’s interventions on roads in their jurisdictions.

The Convention President said the education sector was not in a desired state and called on the government to reposition the sector.

On Baptist’s 112th annual convention, Akanji said the programme would commence on April 26 and end on May 1, at the Baptist International Convention Centre in Lufuwape, Ogun.

He stated that theme of the convention is: “Entering into Newness through Fasting and Prayer”.

Akanji expressed the convention’s commiseration with the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria and the entire global Roman Catholic Church over the death of Pope Francis. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Pope Francis: Exit of humble, reformist pontiff

Pope Francis: Exit of humble, reformist pontiff

By Chijioke Okoronkwo, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

On April 21, the Holy See, the central governing body of the Catholic Church and Vatican City State, announced the death of Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff.

The demise of the pontiff followed bouts of respiratory illnesses–pneumonia in both lungs—among other complications; he has been hospitalised intermittently in the past four years.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7.35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was devoted to service to the Lord and His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love the One and Triune God,’’ Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced.

Pope Francis, aged 88, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Dec. 17, 1936; a son of Italian immigrants.

Originally known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he was the first Pope of the Americas and also the first Jesuit Pope.

Pope Francis was ordained a Catholic priest on Dec. 13, 1969 by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano of Córdoba.

On May 20, 1992 Pope John Paul II appointed him titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires; on May 27, he received episcopal ordination from the Cardinal in the cathedral.

He was elected Supreme Pontiff on March 13, 2013, replacing the retiring Pope Benedict XVI.

The news of the exit of the Catholic pontiff threw Catholics and non-Catholics into mourning as tributes and griefs poured in torrents from around world.

For the benefit of hindsight, Pope Francis wanted a deviation from the traditional papacy and sought to introduce radical reforms in deeply conservative Catholic Church; he had, however, always met a brick wall in Vatican’s bureaucracy, the Roman Curia.

He was a social justice and climate change advocate and promoted interfaith dialogue in his desire to open up the Catholic Church and embrace modernism.

In his 12-year papacy, Francis, against all odds, implemented significant reforms, including overhauling Vatican finances, updating liturgical books, and simplifying papal funeral rites.

The deceased pontiff had a more accommodating tone towards the LGBTQ+ community and upbraided laws that criminilaised homosexuality; he was also an advocate for migrants and refugees.

Francis had been participating in public events from a wheelchair due to a severe knee condition and had to cancel many regular prayers, audiences and services in recent months.

In his last public appearance, Francis appeared briefly on the balcony in front of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday to deliver an Easter blessing.

In spite of his ill health, the pope completed a 12-day trip to Asia and the Pacific in the first half of September and a visit to Luxembourg and Belgium later the same month.

In Nigeria, President Bola joined world leaders in pouring in encomiums for the late pontiff.

Tinubu personally penned a passionate tribute.

The president described Francis as a humble servant of God, tireless champion of the poor and guiding light for millions.

The president said the passing of the pontiff, coming just after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, was a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.

“His Holiness served the Church and the Master of the Church until the end; in 2013, he stepped onto the global stage with a message of mercy, urging us to see the face of Christ in the marginalised, the refugees, the migrants, and the forgotten.

“He challenged the powerful to act with justice, called nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our common home – this Earth – is a gift we must protect for future generations.

“He was an instrument of peace who deeply embodied the message of Christ: love for God and love for humanity. In a time of division, he built bridges between faiths and the rich and the poor.”

He said the late Pope was a steadfast advocate for the developing world, where he consistently spoke against economic injustice and ceaselessly prayed for peace and stability in troubled regions.

“His encyclicals were not only doctrinal and seminal but also timely and relevant; through his pastoral letters, the Pope offered spiritual clarity and hope in an increasingly complex world.

“He charted a path of renewal for all humanity through his words and deeds,” Tinubu said.

U.S President, Donald Trump in his message wrote, “Rest in Peace Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him! “

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said that Pope’ leadership in a complex and challenging time for the world and the church was courageous, yet always came from a place of deep humility.

He said Francis was a pope for the poor, the downtrodden and the forgotten.

“He was close to the realities of human fragility, meeting Christians around the world facing war, famine, persecution and poverty; yet he never lost hope of a better world.

“That hope was as the heart of his papacy. His determination to visibly live out his faith inspired people across the world to see afresh the church’s teachings of mercy and charity.

“With his death, we are reminded once more of his call to care for one another across different faiths, backgrounds, nations and beliefs.

“My thoughts are with Catholics across the world, and the Roman Catholic Church,’’ he said.

On his part, French President, Emmanuel Macron, paid an avid tribute for Francis.

“From Buenos Aires to Rome, Francis wanted the Church to bring joy and hope to the poorest; to unite people with one another and with nature; may this hope be reborn endlessly beyond him.

“To all Catholics, to a grieving world, my wife and I send our thoughts,’’ he said.

Sharing an episcopal sentiment, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, described the passing of Francis on Easter Monday as the fall of “a mighty Iroko”.

He said it was a loss that resonated across the world.

Kaigama reflected on the Pope’s profound spiritual and pastoral legacy.

“He showed us the face of Jesus Christ, the face of mercy, the face of love.

“A great man, very great, in our local parlance, I will say a mighty Iroko has fallen; it shakes the whole world; the whole world is mourning,

“Christians and non-Christians and for all of us, it is a passing away of a great one; his legacies are many, uncountable.

“He traveled through the whole world, pronouncing and showing love and mercy; he was a very humane Pope and very attentive to the needs of the ordinary person.

“And so, he will be remembered for this; like Jesus Christ, he touched those who are sick; he identified with the prisoners, those who are dismissed by the society.

“So, he was a very humane Pope and very attentive to the needs of the ordinary person.’’

Kaigama urged Catholic faithful in Abuja and Nigeria to pray for the eternal repose of Pope Francis, emphasising the need for unity and hope as the Church entered a period of transition.

He also spoke on his expectations for a new Pope.

We want a good pope, a holy pope, a pope that is there for the people; wherever he comes from and whoever he is does not matter.

“We just pray that God will give us a good pope, a holy pope, a pope that will lead the flock unto salvation.”

According to him, during this interregnum, the Vatican’s Camerlengo oversees daily affairs, but no major decisions are made until a new pope is elected.

“A carmelengo, a chamberlain, oversees the activities of Catholic Church for now; his task is to oversee the practical running of the Vatican for now.

“But as for the church, no major decisions are taken; we just wait; when the cardinals assemble and a new pope is elected, then the life continues.

“So, we can say we are on hold for now; but the church still keeps moving,’’ he said.

Kaigama called on the faithful to intensify their prayers, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide the Church through the challenging moment.

The pontiff, had in 2015,  declared his desire to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a fifth-century church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As the Conclave (the assembly of cardinals for the election of a pope) convenes within 15 to 20 days after the death of Francis, the world waits and watches in awe for the emergence of a new Pope.(NANFeatures)
