The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) has called for robust collaboration among families, faith-based institutions and government to tackle drug abuse, particularly among youths.

Pastor Edwin Etomi, the Senior Regional Overseer at MFM’s Abuja headquarters, made the call at the end of a three-day training on drug abuse, organised in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abuja.

Etomi said government could not address the menace alone, highlighting the crucial roles families and religious organisations play in preventing, rehabilitating and reintegrating survivors.

He urged the public, private and religious sectors to join forces, stating that “a three-fold cord is not easily broken.

“As governments do their part, families and faith-based institutions must support efforts to reposition our youths and make Nigeria a greater nation.

“The synergy will help to reposition youths, and Nigeria will be greater and envy of the whole black race.”

While urging government not to relent in its efforts but to do more, Etomi also urged the youths to shun all forms of vices.

He added that “it may look subtle and interesting at the beginning, but it is demonic and destiny destroyer. It is not of God.”

On efforts of the Church to address the menace, he said the General Overseer of MFM Ministries Worldwide, Dr Daniel Olukoya, and his wife, Dr Elizabeth Olukoya, were strong believers of the youth force.

He said “our Father in the Lord, Dr Olukoya, has established a rehabilitation centre, fully equipped in Lagos.

“MFM’s ongoing partnership with NDLEA and the establishment of a dedicated rehabilitation centre in Lagos reflect the Church’s commitment to holistic healing spiritually, mentally and physically.

“After helping former addicts physically, they will be reintegrated as productive members of society.”

According to him, the training is to equip participants with practical skills to manage and support victims of substance abuse, moving beyond prayer to therapy and social reintegration.

Etomi encouraged youths struggling with addiction to seek help without fear of stigma, assuring them of support from both government and religious institutions.

The NDLEA Chairman, Retired, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, stressed the importance of awareness to support those affected.

Represented by NDLEA’s Director of Drug Demand Reduction, Mrs Ngozi Madubuike, he said that families and religious organisations are pivotal in educating young people about the dangers of drug use and fostering positive values.

He expressed hope that with enough knowledge and awareness on drug and drug-related matters acquired during the training, participants should be able to act better toward drug users and be able to prevent drug use among the young people in Nigeria.

Dr Edemma Udoh, the programme organiser and a pastor in the Church, described the train-the-trainer workshop as timely.

Udoh, a Forensic Toxicologist, added that the ministry would continue to partner NDLEA to address drug abuse in the country.

One of the participants, Okunjolu Amodu, said the training has helped the participants to understand cases of drug abuse and how to handle those involved.

Amodu added that “as Christians, wherever we come in contact with such people, we should not tag them as rejected people in the society.

“We should rather see them as people who are useful, and God can use them in His vineyard.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Pope Francis: A mighty Iroko has fallen – Kaigama

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, has described the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday as the fall of “a mighty Iroko”.

He said it was a loss that resonated across the world.

Kaigama, in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, reflected on the Pope’s profound spiritual and pastoral legacy.

“He showed us the face of Jesus Christ, the face of mercy, the face of love.

“A great man, very great, in our local parlance, I will say a mighty Iroko has fallen; it shakes the whole world; the whole world is mourning,

“Christians and non-Christians and for all of us, it is a passing away of a great one; his legacies are many, uncountable.

“He traveled through the whole world, pronouncing and showing love and mercy.

“He was a very humane Pope and very attentive to the needs of the ordinary person.

“So, he will be remembered for this; like Jesus Christ, he touched those who are sick; he identified with the prisoners, those who are dismissed by the society.

“So, he was a very humane Pope and very attentive to the needs of the ordinary person.’’

Kaigama urged Catholic faithful in Abuja and Nigeria to pray for the eternal repose of Pope Francis, emphasising the need for unity and hope as the Church entered a period of transition.

He also spoke on his expectations for a new Pope.

We want a good pope, a holy pope, a pope that is there for the people; wherever he comes from and whoever he is does not matter.

“We just pray that God will give us a good pope, a holy pope, a pope that will lead the flock unto salvation.”

According to him, during this interregnum, the Vatican’s Camerlengo oversees daily affairs, but no major decisions are made until a new pope is elected.

“A camerlengo, a chamberlain, oversees the activities of the Catholic Church for now; his task is to oversee the practical running of the Vatican for now.

“But as for the church, no major decisions are taken; we just wait; when the cardinals assemble and a new pope is elected, then life continues.

“So, we can say we are on hold for now; but the church still keeps moving,’’ he said.

Kaigama called on the faithful to intensify their prayers, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide the Church through the challenging moment.

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church and the first from Latin America, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta.

His death was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, at 9:45 AM, following a period of declining health after a severe bout of pneumonia.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Francis was elected pope on March 13, 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI.

His 12-year papacy was marked by humility, a focus on the marginalised, and a drive for reform within the Church.

Francis championed social justice, environmental protection most notably through his encyclical “Laudato Si” and interfaith dialogue, seeking to make the Church more inclusive and responsive to modern challenges.

Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis implemented significant reforms, including overhauling Vatican finances, updating liturgical books, and simplifying papal funeral rites.

He was also known for his outreach to the LGBTQ+ community and his advocacy for migrants and refugees.(NAN)

A cleric, Pastor Bobai Tanko, has urged Christians to use the Easter period to reflect on the grace of God in their lives.

Tanko, the Assistant Pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) English Service, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, made the call during the church service on Sunday.

He said the resurrection of Jesus Christ symbolised victory over sin and death, as well as the redemption of Christians, which should inspire them to live according to His instructions.

“The grace of God has been made sufficient through His resurrection, and it should not be taken for granted,” he said.

According to him, the death and resurrection of Christ should transform Christians into better individuals in the society.

“The grace of God should make you humble and lead you to live a purposeful life. Easter is a period of reflection on the sacrifices Christ made.

“We are here not because of who we are, our education, or the tithes we have, but because of the grace of God,” he said.

Tanko urged Christians to use the Easter period to thank God for His mercies, including those that may seem insignificant.

“Some people had only headaches and didn’t survive, while others have cancer and are still alive. Some underwent minor surgeries and passed away, while others survived major surgeries,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mr Ibrahim Layode, Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, says 1,400 intending pilgrims including officials from the state will perform the 2025 Pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
Layode disclosed this during a free medical screening for intending pilgrims in Badagry, Lagos State.
According to him, 1,400 bed spaces have been arranged for the intending pilgrims and officials of the ministry in Saudi Arabia.
He said that the state would not provide additional pilgrims, adding that arrangement had been concluded on comfortability of the number.
He said the state had organised the free medical screening to ensure that intending pilgrims from the state were tested and free from diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV and other contagious diseases.
“Mr governor has said we should ensure that each one of them goes through this screening to know about their health challenges.
“Previous years, we have seen a lot of people facing different health challenges.
“There was a time we had someone stuck at the Hajj for about four months because of health challenges, so the governor said we have to put an end to this.
“We need to be very healthy to perform the Hajj right, so the governor has made it seamless by making it free for all our intending pilgrims preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia.
“Everybody is being encouraged by the governor to partake in this exercise, so they will know the status of their medical health,” he said.
Also, Alhaji Abdul-Akeem Ajumade, the newly appointed Secretary of Lagos State Pilgrims Welfare Board, urged the intending pilgrims to take advantage of the screening to check and know their health status.
Dr Mazida Terinoso, Coordinator of the medical screening, urged the intending pilgrims to take advantage of the exercise.
According to her, the screening is free and government has mandated it for all intending pilgrims.
“We are doing the exercise in all local governments in Lagos, but today and Sunday have been assigned to Badagry and Ajeromi Local Governments,” she said.
One of the intending pilgrims, Mr Ismail Tajudeen, commended the state government for organising the free exercise.
“Gov. Sanwo-Olu has done a very good job by making sure we are given very good medical attention before moving to Saudi Arabia.
“We sincerely appreciate this and hope that this will continue with the years coming,” he said.
Mrs Kafayat Tolani, another intending pilgrim from Badagry, said: “Initially they told us we were going to pay for this medical and to our surprise, we are getting this done for us for free, in fact we are so happy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Hallmark of Success Ministries has distributed Bibles, food packs and Christian animation books to over 250 children in Akute, Ogun, to mark Easter celebrations.

Dr Victor Basola, Senior Pastor of Hallmark of Success Ministries, said the outreach was in partnership with Mission Feed Foundation and Excite Communications.

Basola said the initiative was community-driven, aimed at reducing child hunger and malnutrition by providing food to children aged between five and 12 years.

He explained the ministry’s goal was to establish a sustainable feeding programme that supports children’s nutrition, while fostering their spiritual growth and educational development.

“Our goal is to combat food insecurity by ensuring children have consistent access to nutritious meals that support their growth,” he said.

He added that the programme also improves children’s health, supports learning, and enhances physical and cognitive development for better school performance.

The senior pastor said the ministry is committed to building stronger communities through sustained efforts in child nutrition and welfare.

“This commitment, alongside the foundation’s proven impact in feeding programmes, keeps us driven to do more,” he added.

Basola explained that beneficiaries are selected following needs assessments with local leaders, schools, and welfare organisations to identify children most in need.

He said: “We prioritise children from low-income homes, orphans, and those in underprivileged or high-risk communities facing food insecurity.”

Basola, who also founded Kingston Free Mission Schools, said the outreach currently supports 250 children within the Akute Community.

He expressed hope for expanded collaborations to increase the reach and impact of the initiative in future efforts.

“Each child receives balanced, regular meals, ensuring they are nourished to grow, learn, and thrive,” he stated.

Mabel Olukoya, Convener of Mission Feed Foundation, said the organisation has supported vulnerable children across communities for the past eight years.

She said ‘FEED’ stands for Feeding, Education, Equipping, and Developing children for a brighter future.

“We teach them God’s word, believing every child has divine purpose and that God cares deeply for their lives,” she said.

Olukoya added that their mission also brings salvation, healing, and wholeness to children as future leaders in society.

She explained the team was led by God to Akute to bless the children with Bibles, food, and other gifts.

Mrs Kelechi Akindele, wife of traditional ruler of Akute, thanked the organisers for bringing the initiative to the community.

She expressed joy that Akute is gaining attention and positive development during the reign of the current Oba.

Akindele encouraged the children to live righteously and shun behaviours that might endanger their future.

She urged them to reflect on the true meaning of Easter and embrace Christ as taught during the event.

She reminded them to always remember the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in their daily lives. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Anglican Bishop of Nike Diocese in Enugu State, Rt. Rev. Christian Onyia, has urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of mischief-makers dividing them along ethnic and religious lines for selfish interests.

In his Easter Message, Onyia charged Nigerians to “bury hate and build bridges.”

“Jesus said, a house divided against itself cannot stand” (Mark 3:25). Let us pursue truth, justice and love,” he said.

The cleric called on Nigerian leaders to embrace accountable, responsive, and capable leadership.

Onyia said that restoration of the nation’s glory and path of socioeconomic progress were highly possible but only through God.

“We can still rise. We can still build. But not by might or power, only by the Spirit of God. God’s plans for Nigeria and the nations are still good, but we must return to Him in truth and humility.

“Christ conquered sin, death, and the grave, offering salvation and restoration to all who believe; His resurrection assures us that no situation is beyond God’s power to redeem,” he said.

The bishop called for repentance and Nigerians turning to seek God’s face. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has charged Muslims to be ambassadors of justice, compassion and peaceful coexistence.

Tinubu said while declaring open the 11th Triennial National Conference of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria in Abeokuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the national conference tagged ‘Gateway 2025‘ has the theme: “Islam and Muslims: Responsibilities and Relevance in a Pluralistic World”.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, also charged Muslim faithful to engage with the broader society constructively and conscientiously.

He commended the leadership and members of the society for their stewardship and remarkable work in the country.

Tinubu described Ansar-Ud-Deen as a noble heritage of faith, knowledge and service.

The President also commended the religious organisation for championing the cause of Islamic education and community development in Nigeria.

“Let me begin by saluting the leadership of this great society, particularly the President, Alhaji Abdul-Rafiu Sanni, and all the members of the National Executive Council for their steadfastness.

“I salute you all for your stewardship and remarkable work you have continued to do in sustaining the founding ideals of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria.

“I also recall with pride the enduring relationship between my forebears and this organisation, a bond which I continue to hold dear.

“For over a century, the society has championed the cause of Islamic education and community development in Nigeria, from the establishment of schools and health centres, to supporting the spiritual and social needs of its members.

“The society has become a critical pillar of our national fabric. Your impact is visible across generations, particularly in your ability to nurture God-fearing intellectually sound and socially responsible individuals,” Tinubu said.

He described the theme of the conference as apt and thought-provoking in a world characterised by diversity of thought, belief and culture.

“The theme reminds us that while we hold fast to our faith, we must also engage with the broader society constructively and conscientiously.

“Let this conference be a platform for honest reflection, bold ideas and practical recommendations that will reinforce the relevance of Islam in addressing today’s challenges, from youth development to moral leadership.

“Also, from education reform to economic empowerment, your deliberations must point us towards unity and collective progress,” he added.

Tinubu said his administration would remain committed to building a more inclusive, secure and prosperous Nigeria guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said his administration was focused on reviving the economy, uplifting the poor and restoring confidence in public institutions.

He said the goals would not be achieved without the support and partnerships of credible, value driven organisations like the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria.

“I express my gratitude for your continuous prayers, counsel and support for our government.

“I urge you to remain steadfast in your noble pursuits and continue to serve as a force for unity, progress and enlightened citizenship,” he said.

Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the President of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sanni, said the conference served as a platform to reflect society’s achievements, assess its challenges, and strategies for the future.

“This gathering is also a testament to collective commitment to the principles of unity, faith, and service to humanity.

“We aim to reinforce our commitment to educational advancement, moral upbringing, and national unity,” he said.

In his goodwill message, the Secretary-General of the National Council of Islamic Affairs and the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishiaq Oloyede, urged the society not to deviate from its methodology.

Oloyede also enjoined them not to deviate from education and dynamism attributes which had made Ansar-Ud-Deen stand out over the years. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Christians and other Nigerians to leverage the lessons of Christ’s resurrection and imbibe the message of hope and victory over the nation’s current challenges.

Jonathan, in his Easter message, encouraged Nigerians to remain positive and draw strength from Christ’s love and sacrificial death for humanity and his gift of salvation.

The former president reminded leaders to be selfless and embrace the virtues of servanthood, sacrifice and passion for service, as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

“I join millions of Christians around the world to commemorate Good Friday.

“This day reminds us all of the sacrificial death of Christ for humanity and His gift of salvation and redemption to all believers.

“This moment reminds Christians of servanthood and passion of service, as exemplified by Jesus Christ, who died to save humanity from sin and reconcile all to God.

“At Easter, we reflect on the power of Christ’s love, the gift of righteousness and the triumph of hope over despair and every challenge in life,” Jonathan said.

He further said that the death and resurrection of Christ on the cross, awakens all to the boundless love of God toward mankind.

The former president also said that Easter also served as a reminder of the possibilities, faith in God, offered man on earth.

“I urge all citizens to be encouraged by the story of the resurrection of Christ and the lessons of hope and victory that are contained in it.

“Let us be reminded about the purpose of salvation and the essence of mercy and the triumphing power of faith and hope over all circumstances,” he said.

Jonathan also urged the citizens to remain positive of the possibilities within the nation.

He also urged Nigerians to draw strength through hope that the people would triumph over challenges they faced, both as individuals and collectively as a nation.

“This moment points us to the virtues of servanthood, sacrifice and passion for service. Let us recommit to pursuing peace and justice for all.

“As a people, let this season renew our faith, strengthen our hope and guarantee us peace.

“Let us continue to imbibe and pursue these virtues and work toward building a nation of peace, unity and love,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
