Kaduna North Local Government Area has won the 2024 football competition of the Kaduna State Basic Education School Sports (BESS) fiesta.

The gold medalist, Kaduna North LGA, defeated Jama’ah LGA that lifted silver medal, two goals to one, while Kaura LGA, that got the third position clinched the bronze medal.

Other games competed for by the participating LGAs in the 2024 BESS Competition were track and field, volleyball and board games, where winners emerged in each of the games from respective LGAs.

Speaking at the end of the two-day competition in Kaduna, the acting Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mubarak Mohammed, said it was the first of its kind among the public schools in the state.

He said prior to the event, they had held the competition in the three zones of the state, where the winners made it to the final.

Mohammed stressed the importance of the occasion, adding that sports development was very important in human lives.

The chairman explained that the programme was an initiative from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) which was stepped down to all state SUBEBs.

He said that the objective of the competition was achieved, which was aimed at driving cohesion and encouraging unity amongst the state teaming pupils and to nurture their mindset at a very young age.

“This competition has given the children from Kajuru, Chikun, Ikara, Kaduna North, among other LGAs, the opportunity to meet, learn from their peers, network, and foster unity.

“Sports foster unity, and that is why there is the World Cup, African Nations Cup, and other international competitions,” he said.

The chairman stated that the Kaduna State Government prioritised sports development, which made SUBEB work closely with the Ministry of Sports to scale up such inter-schools and inter-local governments competitions.

He thanked all the sports coaches and desk officers from the local governments, and all those who provided support for success of the competition.

Mohammed congratulated all the pupils, emphasising that everybody was a winner, while assuring that the board would scale up with many other sporting activities in subsequent competitions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was a collaboration between SUBEB and UBEC. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, says the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun will serve as a major test of the  Federal Government’s ongoing sports reforms.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the festival termed ‘Gateway Games’ is slated for May 16 to May 30.

Dikko stated this while delivering a keynote address virtually from Milan, Italy, at the opening ceremony of the Extraordinary National Council on Sports meeting on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

“An Olympics-standard National Sports Festival in Abeokuta will be the true test of the ongoing reforms in the Nigerian sports sector,” he said.

Dikko commended President Bola Tinubu for the bold decision to replace the Federal Ministry of Sports with the NSC.

He said  that the decision marked a significant turning point for the sector.

“Mr President is known  for taking very bold decisions. The decision to reintroduce the NSC was a very bold one and truly challenged us.

“We aligned with the President’s Renewed Hope and Shared Prosperity agenda by launching the Renewed Hope Initiative for the Nigerian Sports Economy (RHINSE).

“This reform agenda has taken us down a road less traveled,we are no longer competition-driven but focused on the holistic development of sports, from grassroots to elite levels,” he said.

The NSC boss emphasised the need for private sector involvement, infrastructure upgrades, and greater attention to grassroots and school sports.

“We must prioritise talent development. If done right, Nigeria can generate significant revenue through the export of sporting talent.

“The goal is to make sports a major contributor to the national economy,” he added.

He said the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta should set a new benchmark and aim for an Olympics-standard event that defines future editions.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

9 states compete in 5th Offiong Edem Table Tennis Championship

Nine states from the South-South and South-East will participate in the fifth edition of the Offiong Edem Table Tennis Competition scheduled to commence in Calabar on April 17.

Sponsor of the championship, Offiong Edem, told newsmen in Calabar that the tournament would take place at the Table Tennis Hall of the UJ Esuene Stadium from April 17 to April 19.

Edem said that N2.5 million and table tennis equipment worth about N10 million would be up for grabs.

The five-time Olympian, who is currently a table tennis coach in the United States after retiring from the sport in 2024, said she chose to organise the tournament annually to discover more talents for the country.

“I am interested in producing other Offiong Edems by encouraging the young talents and sharing what I have with them,” she said.

She said although in the last four years the competition had always featured players from the South-South and South-East zones, it would become a national event from 2026.

Edem said that inadequate support for players, especially in getting their kits and participating in competitions had discouraged many players from the sport.

“The government cannot sponsor table tennis alone; the private sector needs to come in.

“It is sad to see our players qualify for international competitions but cannot participate in them because they do not have sponsors.

“They however, rely only on participating in local events which cannot make them better players,” she said.

According to Edem, she decided to retire from the sport to allow younger players to take over the stage.

“I have won gold medals at the African Games and I have participated in all major competitions from the Olympics to the Commonwealth Games and other international competitions, so, I felt it was time to quit.”

On his part, Mr Usen Umoh, the Vice Chairman of the Cross River Table Tennis Federation, said the only way to take many young people off the street was by providing sports facilities.

Umoh maintained that Offiong Edem, who came from a humble background, had provided 75 pairs of rubber for upcoming talents.

“Each pair costs about N200,000,” he said.

“If Cross River has three Offiong Edem, we will not go to the government to solicit funds to support the sport in the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

It began with newcomers Benue Queens recording their first win in the league following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ibom Angels at the Lafia Township Stadium.

In Owerri, Remo Stars Ladies were held to a 1-1 draw by Heartland Queens.

Onyinyechi Kalu gave the hosts the lead before Bolaji Olamide ended her four-game goal drought to rescue a point for Wemimo Mathew’s side.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers Angels produced the most emphatic result of the matchday, dismantling Delta Queens 3-0 in a South-South derby, courtesy of a hat-trick from Mary Moses – her second treble this term.

Naija Ratels continued their playoff push with a narrow 1-0 win over FC Robo Queens at the Bwari Township Stadium with Sofiat Bankole scoring the match-winner.

In Ibadan, Ekiti Queens and Nasarawa Amazons played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

Zainab Ismail scored twice for the hosts Ekiti, while Jenat Akekeromowei and Hembafan Ayatsea were on target for the visitors.
