The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has urged the Customs team to step up in the ongoing 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship.

He spoke in Abuja after the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) women’s team lost 0–3 to Club Féminin de Carthage (CFC) of Tunisia in Pool A.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NCS girls started each set well but struggled to maintain momentum and lost all three sets.

They were defeated 18–25 in the first set, 19–25 in the second, and 13–25 in the third, losing the match 0–3.

Speaking after the match, Adeniyi said there was still a lot to play for in the tournament.

He stressed that the tournament was far from over, with more matches yet to be played.

“Both teams have one win each, and the outcome between Rwanda and Cameroon is still unknown,” he added.

He encouraged the players, saying there is still hope and that the tournament remains wide open.

Adeniyi expressed hope that the coaching staff would address the errors, especially those in the second set.

He believes the team can bounce back with the right adjustments and improved execution.

“The coaches will return to the drawing board and prepare for our next match.

“We’ll work on correcting our mistakes. We are confident about a stronger showing in the next game,” he said.

The Nigeria Customs Service team remains determined to recover and fight for a better position in the tournament.

NAN reports that in another Pool A match, APR (Rwanda) beat Mayo Kani Evolution (MKE) of Cameroon 3–1 (25–19, 18–25, 21–25, 19–25).

In Pool B, Kenya Prisons (PRI) secured their first win, defeating Spiking Stars Volleyball (SSV) of Botswana 3–0 (25–9, 25–15, 25–16).

Also in Pool D, Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) overcame Litto Team Volleyball (LTV) of Cameroon 3–1 (25–20, 25–18, 23–25, 25–21).

In Pool B again, Zamalek SC (ZMK) of Egypt beat Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Spikers 3–0 (25–14, 25–20, 25–16).

A total of 16 teams are competing in the tournament, with each group placed into four pools.

In Pool A: APR (Rwanda), NCS (Nigeria), MKE (Cameroon), and CFC (Tunisia).

Pool B includes ZMK (Egypt), PRI (Kenya), CNS (Nigeria), and SSV (Botswana).

Pool C features AHL (Egypt), KCB (Kenya), VLL (DR Congo), and SOC (Senegal).

Pool D comprises LTV (Cameroon), KPC (Kenya), PVC (Rwanda), and Club Omnisports Descartes (Côte d’Ivoire).

The much awaited 2025 IBB Captain’s Cup tournament is set to tee-off on Monday at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja with no fewer than 300 golfers participating.

Tagged ” Tiger Bows Out,” the six-day championship, which is among events lined up to celebrate the exit of the outgoing Captain of the Club, Ibrahim Babayo, will feature various categories.

The categories include: Caddies and Staff competition, Men and Female Divisions, Pros competition, Sponsors, Veterans and Super Veterans competition, as well as an 18-hole event on the last day.

The celebrant, Babayo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was bowing out with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction for the work he was able to achieve during his one year tenure at the club.

The captain described his tenure as action-packed and attributed his success to the collective efforts and teamwork by the executive members having set standards for those that will come behind them.

“When we took over the club in April 2024, we set our sight on the dreams like what golfers will say, ‘our eyes on the green’.

“Indeed our greens are good to see now, unlike in the past when they were brown.

“There are numerous things we have done. We have renovated the access gate, our reception wears a new look and is tastefully furnished, as well as replacing of the air conditioners in the Club house.

“We have also carried out forensic audits, we have carried out SOP. We have done so many things to change the cooperate governance of the club, which has been a tremendous success.

“We have also changed the booking App of the club to the world standard. Our website is up to date. We also carried out the beautification of the club.

“We changed all the street lights in the club. We are working to have solar lighting of all the holes,” he said.

He commended the Organising Committee led by Amb. Ben Okoyen for their effort so far in putting up a memorable championship in his honour.

He revealed that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede was expected to perform the ceremonial tee-off alongside other invited dignitaries.

NAN reports that the tournament which tees off on Monday is expected to end on Saturday.

Team Delta has taken an early lead on the medals table at the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival, securing a total of 67 medals.

This is according to the latest tally released by the organisers as of the end of Day Three (8 p.m. on Saturday).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Niger Delta Sports Festival is currently being hosted by Akwa Ibom and features participation from the nine Niger Delta states.

The medal’s table released on Sunday in Uyo by the Main Organising Committee, has Delta leading the pack after it garnered 32 golds,16 silvers and 19 bronze medals making a total of 67.

Following closely on the table is Bayelsa with 29 gold,16 silver and 11 bronze medals, totalling 56 medals.

Edo is currently sitting third on the log with a total of 55 medals; 10 golds, 25 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Team Rivers is comfortably sitting fourth on the medals table with 10 gold, seven silver and 14 bronze medals, totalling 31 medals.

Team Ondo and host state, Akwa Ibom have 19 medals each with the former having four gold, nine silver and six bronze medals.

While the latter has four gold, seven silver, and eight bronze medals to make fifth and sixth positions on the log respectively.

Team Imo is seventh on the log with three gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals, totalling 26 medals.

Also, Team Cross River has three gold, four silver and 12 bronze medals to make it 19 medals to sit 8th in the log.

Team Abia is last on the log with a total of 13 medals with three gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

The Ondo State Female Basketball Team has qualified for the semi-finals event at the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ondo Female Basketball Team defeated Akwa Ibom 24-14 in their encounter.

The day two event of competition continued with the duo of Adesewa Olaniyan and Alice Paul qualifying for the finals in Tennis doubles.

Also, the duo of Table Tennis players in the doubles category; Olaoye Habeeb and Peter Ezuba qualified for the semi-final of the event.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Female Football Team also qualified for the semi-final of the competition after defeating Bayelsa 3-1 in their encounter.

The male football team played 1-1 draw with Cross River in their second match, while Patience Nigeria won bronze in the 200 metres freestyle in swimming.

Otemuyiwa Marvelous is also through to finals in traditional wrestling.

The Ondo State Table Tennis Association Coach, Mayowa Sunday, in a chat with newsmen appreciated the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the opportunity to expose the athletes in the game of Tennis.

Sunday said he would be happy if his athletes could win gold medal in the competition.

Ondo State contingent at the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival continued it impressive outings with Para-powerlifting Kayode Blessing winning gold in the 65kg category.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the victory added to the medal haul of the state making it two gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

In the day two of the competition on Friday in Uyo, the Ondo State male team in the volleyball event defeated their Imo State counterpart 2-0, which made them qualify for the semi finals of the competition after defeating the host state, Akwa Ibom 2-0.

However, the female volleyball team of Ondo State were defeated by Akwa Ibom girls 2-0 in the second match of the competition, after losing their first game with the same margin to Rivers.

Also, in the handball event, Ondo State girls lost its first game 8-9 to Edo, while bouncing back in the second game to defeat Rivers girls 16-0 in the second game.

Speaking with NAN in Uyo, the Ondo State Volleyball Head Coach, Sina Afuye, said he was happy with results of the boys, saying the girls would come back stronger.

Afuye said the team was formed for the purpose of the competition and was proud of the performance of both teams.

“We have a good team on both sides and I am sure we have exposed them to a standard competition and I am sure going forward, the confidence is there and talents are being discovered,” he stated.

Also, Powerlifter Kayode Blessing, said he was proud to have won gold medal for the state in the game of powerlifting.

Blessing said he was sure that the state would do well in the overall competition by the end of the game.

Meanwhile, in the game of Tennis, two of Ondo State players, Imole Adisa and Henry Aina are also in the semi finals after defeating Henry Nwosu from Abia 4-2, 4-0 and Uche Stanley 4-0, 4-0 respectively. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has charged participants at the ongoing 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship to showcase the true essence of sportsmanship.

The First lady gave the charge when she officially declared the Championship open at the Moshood Abiola, National Stadium, on Thursday in Abuja.

Mrs Tinubu who is the Grand Patron of the tournament, commended the athletes for showcasing their talents in sport.

“I thank the African Volleyball Confederation for choosing Nigeria as the host nation for this prestigious tournament.

“Your confidence in our ability to provide a conducive environment for this championship is indicative of Nigeria’s growing reputation as a destination for international sporting events.

“The athletes before us today perfectly embody what we advocate for women, boldly claiming their space and demonstrating that gender is never a limitation to excellence.

“Each of you represents your nation, as well as the unlimited potential of African womanhood.

“Seeing these talented young African women gathered here to showcase their exceptional skills and sporting excellence, fills my heart with profound joy and optimism for our continent’s future,”she said.

She described Nigeria as a nation where women are making remarkable strides across all sectors under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, we have witnessed unprecedented reforms aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance, economics and societal development.

Shehu Dikko, the Chairman, National Sports Commission ( NSC) commended the first lady for accepting to be the grand patron of the tournament.

He acknowledged the Nigeria Customs Service with the support of the NSC for playing the pivotal role in ensuring seamless logistics of the championship.

“To the first lady, whose leadership as the grand patron of this event has been invaluable in bringing this championship to life.

“Your commitment to women in sports and women in general, has continued to inspire and pave the way for future generations of Africans.

“To the athletes, I encourage you to continue with passion , integrity and respect for one another.

“Let this tournament be a celebration of excellence and unbreakable bonds that sports create,” he said.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi in his remarks, described the tournament as a remarkable one that has featured many female athletes.

“Today we gather to celebrate the culmination of countless hours of sacrifice, determination and unwavering commitment.

“Each athlete here represents a journey of perseverance that extends beyond these courts.

“In this arena are women who have defiled expectations, overcome obstacles and risen above limitations, these athletes have turned impossibility into possibility,”he said.

He also appreciated Mrs Tinubu for her inspiration and for the acceptance of being the grand patron of the championship.

Also speaking, Bouchra Hajij, the President, Confederation of African Volleyball, said the championship provides a platform for the continent’s best clubs to compete.

Armee Patriotique Rwandaise Volleyball Club (APR) of Rwanda on Thursday defeated Club Femini De Carthage (CFC) of Tunisia 3-1 to record their first win at the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this is the first game of the 2025 championship currently taking place at the Moshood Abiola National stadium, Abuja.

It was an entertaining encounter as spectators watched the Rwandan club rallied from a set down to overcome their Tunisian counterparts 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22) in the opening match.

The Tunisians dominated the first set, securing a convincing 25-18 win.

However, they struggled to maintain momentum after taking an early lead, thereby allowing the APR of Rwanda to stage a dramatic comeback to snatch the second set 26-24.

They carried the momentum into the third set, which they also won 25-23.

The Rwandan club sealed the victory with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, to triumph 3-1.

Speaking after the match, Reka’a Kameal, Coach of CFC of Tunisia, expressed disappointment with his team’s performance in their opening game, citing fatigue and inadequate rest as major factors.

“We arrived late last night and didn’t have enough time to rest.

“We were forced to play this morning at 10 a.m., which wasn’t ideal for us. As a result, we weren’t adequately prepared and had to suffer a loss.”

Kameal was optimistic about his team’s chances of progressing in the competition in spite of the loss.

“We are hoping to bounce back and win our subsequent matches.

“Our target is to reach the semifinals, and we are committed to making that happen,” he said.

NAN reports that APR, is in Pool A alongside Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mayo Kani Evolution (MKE) of Cameroon and CFC.

NAN also reports that NCS will engage the Cameroonians by 5 p.m. later today in their opening match.

Zamalek Sporting Club (ZMK) of Egypt, Kenya Prisons Volleyball Club (PRI) of Kenya, Chief of Naval staff (CNS) and Spiking Stars Volleyball (SSV) of Botswana are in Pool B.

Pool C has Al Ahly Sporting Club (AHL) of Egypt, Kenya Commercial Bank Volleyball Club (KCB) of Kenya, Volleyball Club La LOI (VLL) from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sococim (SOC) of Senegal.

Clubs in Pool D are Litto Team Volleyball (LTV) of Cameroon, Kenya Pipeline Company Volleyball Club (KPC) of Kenya, Police Volleyball Club (PVC) of Rwanda and Club Ominisports Descartes of Côte d’Ivoire.

President Bola Tinubu has described sports as a powerful tool for youth development and economic growth of a nation.

Tinubu said this while declaring open the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) holding in Uyo on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Sports festival is organised by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in commemoration of its 25 anniversary.

The President, represented by the Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, said the NDDC has reinforced its commitment to harnessing sports as a vehicle for empowerment and sustainable development.

“I commend the NDDC for their foresight in supporting this event.

“Sports is not just about competition, they are  powerful tool for youth development, community engagement and economic growth.

“By investing in event of this magnitude, NDDC has reinforced its commitment to harness sports as a vehicle for empowerment, sustainable development and indeed deepening security within the region,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu, who commended the interventionist agency,  said the development aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms for the sports sector.

The President applauded the Akwa Ibom Government for hosting the festival, saying the state has proven itself as a sports destination for international competition,  especially football.

In his remarks, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, said that the region was not only vested with natural resources,  but human potentials for the development of the nation.

Momoh said that the festival has proven that the NDDC is not just known for infrastructure development alone but also in sports.

He said sports teaches all values that are  fundamental to building a prosperous society and tasked the athletes to see the festival as an opportunity to showcase their talents.

“Today, we are here for sports activities which is an indication that NDDC is not only known for infrastructure development but also in the area of sports.

“This ocassion, of course is not another jamboree but it is a testament to the power of sports for regional development, promoting unity and drive econmic empowerment across our great nation.

“The Niger Delta region is vested in abundant talents not only in natural resources but in human potentials.

“Today, as we gathered to witness and celebrate the delegation like this, we are reminded that sports are more than just competition.

“it is a vehicle for national development, through discipline, perseverance and team work,” Momoh said.

The Minister added that the festival was not all about winning of medals, it is about building a healthier population among the young people.

In a goodwill message, Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom urged the athletes to be disciplined, exhibit spirit of sportsmanship throughout the festival.

Eno tasked Akwa Ibom contingents to showcase their talents and win medals for the state, saying that the state did not just host the festival, but hosting to win.

Earlier, the Chairman, Main Organising Committee, Alabo Iyaye, said the intervention in sports  by NDDC was drawn from the fact that sports transform human lives, the society and the economy.

NAN reports that the opening ceremony was characterised by cultural display by the nine states of the Niger Delta region and match pass by the athletes.

The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi has assured all participating teams of a conducive environment at the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja.

Adeniyi stated this during the technical meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

In his welcome address, he recognised the challenges faced by all participants and officials from across Africa , who had endured long flights to arrive in Abuja.

“It is our pleasure to welcome the greatest assembly of volleyball in Africa to Abuja. “We are indeed very happy to see you.

“Nigeria would do its best to make your stay enjoyable, highlighting the country’s warm and friendly nature of Nigerians,” he said.

He also  highlighted the complexity of volleyball, noting that while only 12 players and a few officials are visible on the court, a long value chain of umpires, referees, scorers, statisticians, and others work behind the scenes.

“ As a host country, this is Nigeria’s first time playing this role, the importance of teamwork and collaboration is what is making the tournament a success.

“The competition is designed to showcase the best of African volleyball talent, with teams competing for the top prize,” he said.

Adeniyi expressed his gratitude for the cooperation and support received from the federation, control committee, and the president of Nigeria volleyball federation, Musa Nimrod .

On his part, Musa Nimrod, President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation,  welcomed  all participating clubs to Nigeria.

He expressed his gratitude to the teams for choosing Nigeria as their host country, a first-time privilege for the nation.

Nimrod assured the participants that Abuja is a peaceful and secure city with excellent healthcare services available.

“You are all welcome, and I encourage you to enjoy your stay in Abuja,” he said.

Nimrod emphasised the spirit of unity and camaraderie among the participating teams, saying, “We are all brothers and sisters here.

“ I wish all the teams the best of luck during their stay in Abuja, Africa is one, enjoy yourself and hospitality that defines the African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that  the event which started on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, is expected to end on April 14.

NAN also  reports that out of the  24 expected participating teams, only 16 teams  were on ground  at the technical meeting.

They include the Nigeria Customs Service ( NCS), Mayo Kani Evolution (MKE) of Cameroon,Armee Patriotique Rwandaise Volleyball Club (APR) of Rwanda, Club Femini De Carthage (CFC) of Tunisia.

Four African countries will make their debut in the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship scheduled for Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament will hold from Tuesday to April 14 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The tournament will feature 24 teams, with Botswana, Burundi, Cote d’ Ivoire, and the Republic of Benin making their debuts at the continental competition.

Their participation marks a significant expansion of the championship, introducing fresh talents and competition to the event.

Representing these nations in the tournament are, Spiking Stars Volleyball (Botswana), Muzinga Volleyball Club and Gender Light Club (Burundi), Club Omnisports Descartes (Cote d’Ivoire), and Queen’s Volleyball Club (Benin Republic).

These new entrants will face tough competition from experienced teams, but their inclusion is expected to inject excitement and energy into the championship.

The stage is set for an electrifying display of volleyball prowess as the participating teams begin to arrive in Abuja.

NAN reports that among the first to arrive were Al Ahly of Egypt, the record championship winners, alongside Egyptian club Zamalek on Sunday.

Botswana’s Spiking Stars VC arrived on Monday, while the host nation’s representative Nigeria Customs Service team, also arrived in the country from a training tour.

The tournament promises to be a thrilling spectacle, showcasing the skill and determination of Africa’s finest female volleyball players.

The 24 participating teams are, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Navy (CNS Spikers), Egypt: Al Ahly Sporting Club (AHL), Zamalek Sporting Club (ZMK)

Ethiopia National Alcohol and Liquor Factory (NAL), Tunisia: Club Féminin De Carthage (CFC), Cameroon: Forces Armées et Police (FAP), Litto Team Volleyball (LTV), Maya Kane Evolution (MKE).

With the teams set and the excitement building, the African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship is poised to deliver an unforgettable tournament, celebrating the best of African volleyball.

Meanwhile, the hall is wearing a new look, while a technical meeting looks into finalising preparations.

The matches are expected to kick off on Thursday from 7 p.m.
