Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara on Saturday teed off the second edition of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) golf tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament which brought together over 160 golfers is meant to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in the Nigerian electricity sector.

Dogara, shortly after performing the ceremonial tee-off along other dignitaries told NAN that the tournament was a good platform for stakeholders to cross fertilise ideas on the way forward for the energy sector.

“This tournament is not just for entertainment but for stakeholders to come together, not just to play golf but for contemplation.

“Because a golf course is a place for contemplation, you meet and interact with people in the course of the sport, unlike football or basketball or any other game.

“This is a game that is engaging in terms of intellectual reflection, physical exercise and generally about togetherness,” he said.

The former speaker stressed the need for all stakeholders to synergise and find a lasting solution to the energy crises in the country.

“Certainly you know that power supply is an issue, we are talking about transiting from a consumer nation to a production nation.

“We all know that without adequate power supply we cannot achieve this, am also a farmer and I know what lack of electricity or the energy crises has caused me at the farm.

“We need to look outside the box for this problem and it’s part of the things we will be engaging with leaders and organisers of this event,” he said.

Earlier, Adetunji Adeyeye, the Coordinator of the tournament told NAN that the event will avail industry stakeholders the platform to engage in a relaxed atmosphere on the way forward for the sector.

Adeyeye who is a market specialist and power generator, stressed the need for more investment in the sector and ensuring efficient service delivery across the value chain.

“The golf tournament is a forum and a platform to bring all stakeholders within the Nigerian power sector to have conversations, strategise and engage informally to drive at the efficiency that we seek for in our power sector.

“You know, the power sector is very core and germain part of our national development.

“Majorly, this forum, the golf platform gives us a really immense and huge opportunity to engage with lots of our customers across the board and across different chains of the sector to get feedback.

“So it’s a platform for fusion of conversation both about our service delivery as well as how to improve generally,” he said.

NAN reports that the tournament will be rounded off with a gala dinner on Saturday and prizes presented to winners in the different categories. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko says his priority is to develop a viable and lucrative Sports economy for the nation.

Dikko stated this on Wednesday in Abuja when the former Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Enoh formally handed over to him at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium office, Abuja.

The chairman  said  that his mission was not to engage in quick fix or just winning medals for the country, but a holistic sports development in line with international best practices.

”The objective of Mr President is to harness the full potentials of the Sports Economy in Nigeria.

”So we have to first change our mindset from the fixation of just competitions and winning medals and come back and fix our domestic sports development”.

”When we set the foundation right the results and the winning of medals will naturally come in a sustainable manner and that should be the new mindset,” he said.

Dikko said part of his mission was to ensure that sports becomes a money-spinner and contributes at least three per cent to the nation’s GDP in the next four years.

”The thinking of Mr President is that after  having some of these structures in place, we should be able to measure the country’s sports by its contribution to the nation’s GDP by at least three per cent.

“We should also be able to measure the number of jobs sports and its value chain are providing in the country in the next  four to five years and indeed our competitiveness across all competitions and tournaments,” he said.

The former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) second vice president, said he would focus on three pillars of proper legal framework, world class infrastructure and using sports to drive the economy.

“Our administration will be focused  on three pillars including running sports as a national asset, that is entitled to special privileges, regulations and concessions to drive growth and development.

”We have to also work on legislations and regulations so as to set the framework to enable the industry to grow effectively like what happened in the communications industry some years back”.

”The other Pillar is investing in purposeful world class infrastructure that will provide an enabling environment for growth,” he said.

Dikko called on all stakeholders to support the  new NSC in its drive to reposition and transform sports development in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Bola Tinubu on Oct. 23 appointed Shehu Dikko as Chairman of the National Sports Commission.

This was after the president scraped the Ministry of Sports Development and had its functions transferred to the Commission in order to revitalise the nation’s sports economy and improve performance in international competitions. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Some stakeholders on Monday commended the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) over the successful hosting of the maiden edition of its Individual Boxing Club Championship.

The stakeholders spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the championship held at Bishop Aggerey Playground, Mushin, Lagos.

The stakeholders include Director-General, LSSC, Lekan Fatodu; Director, Sports Development, LSSC, Travih Nunayon.

Others are Boxing  Promoter and Chairman of Last Boxing Promoters, Wasiu Waheed; and Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ajala Razak.

Razak said that the various communities within the Mushin environs were ecstatic about the boxing prospects discovered during the one-week competition.

According to him, the poeple believe in the initiative, because it is one of the interventions of the government to identify talents within the streets and to use the platform to project the hidden talents within the communities.

“More importantly that people have erroneous beliefs that nothing good can come out of Mushin, but with this initiative, we can raise the hopes and prove to the world that we have lots of talents,” he said.

NAN reports that the week-long festival of boxing competition, which had 300 boxers in attendance, ended on Sunday, at Bishop Aggerey Playground in Mushin.

Ajala noted that Mushin communities have been blessed with many potential boxers who were on the wings to blossom.

“Mushin in boxing space is blessed with talents who can contribute to the exports from Nigeria and also let the world knows about the peculiarities of Mushin community in boxing.

“There are lots of sporting events that the local government is also doing to complement the efforts of the state government.

“We have lots of programmes; table tennis football boxing and traditional games. It is our strong belief that we want our youths to be responsible and use their talents and energies to productive ventures.

“We want to discourage gangsterism and things that will destroy them by unleashing terror on the communities. This can only be achieved through sports,” the council boss said.

Similarly, Waheed noted that the competition had awaken the sleeping giants of boxing in Mushin communities.

“I want to congratulate the Director General (D-G) of LSSC for this initiative and the event, it has been a long time wish come true for us to havie the competition.

“As member of Boxing Promoters, I am excited that we can hold this competition in Mushin which has awaken the real potentials of Mushin.

“This competition has brought joy to us in identifying more talents within Mushin Communities, this will serve as preparations towards NSF next year.

“Events like this will very soon put Nigeria in the limelight of boxing in Africa and the World because we are ready to do more,” he said.

The boxing promoter added that with abundant talents Mushin community could dominate the world’s amateur and professional.

“If other states can copy this initiative we will have more boxers around,” he said.

Also, Nunayon said that the competition had been able to fulfil its aim and mandate.

He said that the LSSC desired to scout for talents from the competition to beef up its pool of athletes for the Gateway Games.

“We have a total of 356 active boxers that registered, but we have 56 of them who failed the medicals.

“So, we have about 300 in different weight categories, both male and female.

“We have 13 male categories and 10 female category which make up of 14 different categories for the NSF.

“From what we have seen, our hopes are high and we are looking to gain more medals looking at boxing in Lagos State,” he said.

The Director, Sports Development, LSSC, noted that the commission had invited four boxers from each weight categories of those who came first, second, third and fourth to come to camp.

“The camp will be opened for a week to look into their fitness and then we go into close camping. The Transition plan that we have is to monitor the amateur boxers.

“We have different promoters that have been coming; also, we have our in-house counsellors that will guide the young boxers on their career path.

“First of all, we look out for their career and then age and expose their to few competitions and then the Olympics under the amateur category.

“We don’t want to rush them to professional fights. Boxing, to LSSC, is to provide a means of livelihood to the young boxers towards a better living,” Nunayon said.

He added that the news about the gains of the competition had spread across the state, which has necessitated more demands.

“We have call from Ajegunle, Badagry and Lagos Island. The interest are there and also the boxers.

“They have told us how they have been training but with no competition to show their prowess over the years and that this platform is a good avenue to show the stuff they are made of.

“We are looking at the possibility of staging this is competition before the NSF to bridge the gap for the weight categories we are lacking.

“We are looking out for other coaches to keep the boxers in shape. We want to challenge Delta State for the crown next year,” he said.

On his part, Fatodu said that state government was ready to rejuvenate boxing across all Lagos divisions, adding that the purpose of having the event was to rejuvenate the grassroots sports development in the state.

“We have started off the project on a strong note with the identification of boxers in Mushin and we are also targeting other communities in Lagos.

“In other areas, we are looking to source for table tennis players in Isolo and others. We have also realized the need for us to further engage other communities so as to engage in more productive activities.

“We want to help them to harness their hidden talents, so, we will be moving around Lagos State,” he said.

The D-G, LSSC, added that it had been a tremendous achievement in Mushin, as the the commission did not anticipate such a number of entries received for the competition as well as the numbers of different boxing clubs and promoters.

“We are equally amazed at the quality of talents on the display during the competition. It has shown that there are more to gain from different sporting areas.

“So, it is a big one for us identifying talents that will represent the state and Nigeria, locally and internationally.

“We will be going to Badagry, Epe, Agege and others for swimming, cycling and marathon, in series.

“We are engaging the young ones in different types of sports as we want to attract talents in more sporting activities,” he said.

A sports enthusiast and resident of Mushin, also lauded the organisers and the boxers, expressing joy at the braveness of the boxers to come out to display their talents.

“The boxers have really given us something to boast of as talents from Mushin.

“This is the first time I will be watching a live boxing match aside the ones shown on the television. It is an interesting match to watch.

“Boxing, as a sport, is mostly good for youths who have such big energies, like our youths in Mushin, which suggests the reason Lagos State Government staged the fight here.

“Mushin youths are known for big time fights, and now, they can channel their energies to real fight. Kudos to the government for this,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has slammed Libya with a 50,000 dollars fine and also awarded Nigeria three points from the botched Matchday 4 2025 AFCON Qualifier.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match earlier scheduled to be played between Libya and Nigeria in Benina on Oct. 15, was cancelled.

This was after Nigeria’s delegation to the qualifier slated to hold in Benghazi on Tuesday, were left stranded for over 20 hours at the airport.

The delay followed a diversion of their plane from Benghazi to Al Abaq airport, a three-hour drive away from their original destination in Benghazi where the team were held hostage without food, water or internet services.

A statement by CAF Disciplinary Board on its ruling on Saturday, signed by the chairman, Ousmane Kane, said the Disciplinary Board met and decided as follows:

“The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

“The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October in Benghazi) declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).

“The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.

“The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.

“All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed,” the statement said.

NAN also reports that the implication is that Nigeria is now poised to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with two matches to spare.

With the decision, the Eagles  now have 10 points from four matches, four points better than second-placed Benin Republic, while Rwanda have five points.

Bottom-placed Libya have only one point and are out of the running for qualification.

Victory or draw against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Abidjan on Nov. 14 (a Matchday 5 encounter) will land the Super Eagles a ticket to the finals in Morocco, December 2025/January 2026.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

No fewer than 300 girls are expected to feature in the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) Women’s Criio festival billed for Friday in Abuja.

Ehis Uadiale, NCF coordinator for the event, said the festival which is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) is aimed at promoting the game across the female folk.

Uadiale, who stated this at a news conference ahead of the National Women’s Championship, said Nigeria and Tanzania were the only African countries selected to pilot the programme.

“In 2023, the NCF was awarded the Best Female Initiative Programme by the ICC and it was from efforts to introduce the sport to over 25,000 girls in Zamfara.

“Following the National women’s team success at the African Games in Ghana and the women’s qualification to the U19 World Cup in Malaysia, ICC also found Nigeria worthy to pilot the criio programme.

“Criio is a concept by ICC. It is a modified way of playing cricket out of the usual hardball cricket. Criio means you can play cricket anywhere, even in your living room.

“With the aim of spreading the game to the female folk, Nigeria and Tanzania were selected among countries in Africa to pilot the programme,’’ Uadiale said.

The NCF official also added that the festival would be replicated in other parts of the country with the aim of creating more awareness of the game.

“We are looking at infusing the criio festival with the ongoing Women’s championship since it is about women.

“We are inviting schools with over 300 girls expected to participate, even representatives of the ICC will be present at the event. It is going to be fun, exciting and worth the time.

“We are also going to replicate this in other parts of the country but we are using Abuja to launch the programme.

“For us, this is a pat on the back from ICC, because we have raised the bar high in terms of grassroots development, especially for women’s cricket and we only hope to keep improving,’’ he said.

On her part, Adaora Sdyney-Jack, the brand ambassador for women’s cricket, said the success of the women’s game has ushered in more partners for the federation.

“Nigeria is seen as a priority country by the ICC and this is due to the success of the women’s game but then we have filled in the gaps that borders around the right partnership, welfare and intervention for the female players.

“We have had a lot of inroads and calls from partners and by January 2025 we are looking at three new major partners.

“I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but they are very huge.

“Some of them will be attending the criio festival but the priorities are not just for the criio festival or the Women’s championship but also for the U19 World Cup in 2025,’’ Sdyney-Jack added.

On his part, Sani Mohammed, the Secretary General, of the federation welcomed all participating teams to the women’s championship, admonishing them on the rules of fair play.

Teams Anambra, Edo, Kogi, Gombe, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ekiti and Kaduna are participating in the tournament expected to end on Sunday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
