By Ijeoma Okigbo

Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) has reiterated its support for the development of cricket in the country.

It lauded the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) for its “governance structure and fruitful partnership” for the past six years.

Tolu Adeleke, PwC Representative, said this at a news conference on Wednesday ahead of the sixth Pwc/NCF U17 National Cricket Championship in Abuja.

Adeleke appreciated the efforts of the federation, noting that the partnership between the duo has been rewarding.

“We need to appreciate the NCF. Our partnership with the federation has been rewarding.

“It speaks to the fact that the federation is properly structured with clearly articulated laid down plans and that is why the relationship has been seamless.

“ The partnership has blossomed and the reward is seeing the talents discovered from the competition able to represent the country internationally.

“It is worthy to note that most of the players that represented Nigeria at the U19 World Cup in January were discovered from this tournament.

“We are pleased with the progress and rewards this tournament brought to the growth of the game in the country and we will continue to support it.

“ This competition doesn’t just help kids improve their game but also builds values of friendship, team work and more, aligning with the values of PwC,” Adeleke said.

On his part, Sani Muhammed, the NCF Secretary-General, highlighted PwC’s role in unearthing cricket talents in Nigeria.

“ On the part of the National Sports Commission (NSC), they commend organisations like PwC for consistently nurturing talent through this grassroots programs such as this.

“ If you look at previous records, many players of the male and female national teams have come from the PwC programme.

“As Tolu mentioned, all the players who represented Nigeria at the T20 World Cup in Malaysia were part of the PwC event.

“The government prioritises the development of this sport and will continue to provide enabling environment to elevate the game,” Muhammed saod.

Meanwhile Joseph Eshua, the NCF Technical Director, said that the tournament will serve as an avenue to select 50 male and 50 female players to be camped for the Under-19 national team.

Automobile club to promote grassroots development of Motorsport

Ishaku Bamaiyi, the Founder/President, Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), says the body is set to promote grassroots development of the sport through the organisation of the Festival of Motorsport.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ATCN was registered in June 2009, with the objective to campaign for road safety, create awareness of environmental matters, health services, and motorsport development.

The ATCN is the sole representative of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Fédération Internationale de Motorcyclisme (FIM), and Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) for all their operations in Nigeria.

The ATCN have been affiliated with the FIA since December 2012 and became the FIA Sporting Power Holder in December 2018.

Bamaiyi told newsmen during the signing ceremony of the ATCN Festival of Motorsport 2025 that the event, which is scheduled to take place in April will herald a new era for motorsport development in Nigeria.

He said as part of the ATCN’s innovation to develop motorsport in Nigeria, the body have had the FIA delegate the Sporting Power to Motorsport Nigeria Ltd.

“Motorsport Nigeria Ltd will enter this agreement today with Alhaji Bashir Ibrahim as the Commercial Rights Holder/Promoter.

“Motorsport Nigeria Ltd will like to inform potential participants in any discipline, whether as competitors or otherwise, that they must be licensed.

“All competitors, without exception, must participate in our training programmes, either physically or online. We are working towards completing and launching our app,” he said.

He explained that the Festival of Motorsport is a multi-disciplinary event that provides opportunities for Nigerians to showcase their various talents.

He said some of opportunities for Nigerians include as competitors, officials, marshals, motorsport marketers, commentators, photographers, videographers, engineers, among others.

“Participating in this event will equip competitors with the right skills and opportunities to engage in international championships.

“Potential disciplines for development in Nigeria, include: Karting Sprint for Juniors, Karting Sprint for Seniors, Karting Slalom, Karting Endurance (4-hour race), Drifting, Auto Slalom, Cross Car and Digital Motorsport,” he said.

The ATCN president said that the Festival of Motorsport would plan programmes for ages 4 to 17 to engage young participants, aligning with the goals of the National Sports Commission’s Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko.

He noted that the Festival of Motorsport supports the visions and missions of ATCN and NSC.

“In past years, we have trained competitors and organised events to encourage development without financial commitment from participants.

“Today, marks a significant day for motorsport development in Nigeria, especially grassroots development through the Festival of Motorsport.

“This signing ceremony heralds a new era for motorsport development in Nigeria, creating an industry that will provide statistical improvements and add economic value for promoters, competitors, and the Nigerian economy at large.

“We will soon see the results of our collective efforts,” he said.

He noted that to support motorsport development in Nigeria, the FIA appointed Emirates Motorsport Organization (EMSO) as our Regional Training Provider (RTP) to train Nigerians.

He said FIA also approved a training programme themed “Young Driver Programme for Motorsport Development,” with Phase 1 implemented in Oct. 2022 and Phase 2 in April 2023.

“Another milestone was implementing the FIA Girls on Track initiative, with ATCN acting as the lead between Nigeria and Ethiopia (Ethiopian Motorsport Association).

“FIA and FIM are individual-based championships; however, in 2019, the FIA World Motorsport Council approved the FIA Motorsport Games.

“This championship allows competitors to represent their countries for medals across various disciplines. The FIM initiated the FIM Intercontinental Games, where the country winning the most medals is crowned champion.

“In this context, Nigeria participated in the FIA Motorsport Games in 2022 in France and will compete in 2024 in Spain, finishing in the quarter-finals in GT and the semi-finals in F4 in the esports categories,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria Aquatics Federation hunts for new talents for local, international competitions

Nigeria Aquatics Federation hunts for new talents for local, international competitions

By Georgina Adegbie

The Nigeria Aquatics Federation says it is taking steps to discover new swimming talents that will represent the country at various international competitions.

Chinoye Aliyu, President, Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAF), said this while reeling out the programme of activities for the forthcoming “Swim to Future” kiddies championship aimed at discovering and nurturing swimming talents within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Aliyu said the initiative was designed to identify, train and develop primary and secondary school children between ages six and 14.

She said that the event scheduled to hold on Friday and Saturday would provide the children with a platform to showcase their skills which would eventually see them representing the country at international competitions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championship is the first edition of the “Swim to Future” championship for primary and secondary school children.

According to Aliyu, the event is the beginning of an exciting new era in Nigerian swimming.

“We recognise the boundless potential of our young swimmers, and with the right training, mentorship and opportunities, they can rise to compete at the highest levels and also represent Nigeria with pride on the international stages.”

She said that the event was part of the federation’s broader strategy to develop swimming in Nigeria, with plans to expand the initiative to other zones across the country.

“The aim is to create a robust swimming ecosystem, providing every region with access to professional training and competitive opportunities in the sport.

“By investing in the next generation of swimming champions, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation is committed to shaping the future of aquatics in Nigeria.

“We want to instil a passion for swimming in them, and this is the right time to start. Swim with passion, train with determination, and embrace this opportunity with both hands,” she said.

On his part, Yisa Lawal from Ojez Entertainment Limited, the sponsors of the event, said it was their first time of sponsoring an aquatic event in Abuja.

“We have supported and sponsored swimming events in Lagos, and we have been partnering with the federation for some time now.

“We decided to partner with the Aquatic Federation to catch them young, nurture and build them for future international events.

“We will help them train in their various aquatic events so that they can build their careers as future professionals,” he said.

Lawal noted that some of the athletes they have assisted in the past were now in foreign countries as professional swimmers.

Jiddah Dakwal, board member representing North Central, Nigeria Aquatics Federation, said that 78 kids have so far registered for the event.

“We are targeting more than 100 athletes to participate in the maiden edition of the championship.

“For the security of these children, we have well-trained coaches and lifeguards who are certified. They will be around to protect these kids in case of any casualty.

“It will be a good programme for kids in the FCT, as children tend to do things well at a tender age with perfection,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

We won’t support transgender boxing in Nigeria, says NBF

We won’t support transgender boxing in Nigeria, says NBF

By Muhyideen Jimoh

Azania Omo-Agege, Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), says the federation will not support any move aimed at promoting transgender boxing in the country.

Omo-Agege said this on Wednesday in Abuja, while expressing concerns over the proposed visit of Boris Vandervorst, President, World Boxing Federation (WBF), where he is expected to promote transgender boxing.

“This move is not in the best interest of Nigerians,” he said.

According to Omo-Agege, Vandervorst has allegedly been in the forefront of championing Transgender boxing in the world.

“He became prominent when he allegedly gave the World Boxing platform to controversial Algerian transgender boxer, Imane Khalif, to participate at the Paris Olympics.

“You know that the majority of the boxers that represent Nigeria are from the military circle, and you recall recently that President Bola Tinubu had pronounced a ban on transgender in the military.

“So, do you want them to disobey the President because they want to represent Nigeria? This is the reason we will not welcome it in the country.”

Omo-Agege criticised those championing the move, and Vandervorst coming, especially at the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), accusing them of prioritising personal interests over national concerns.

The NBF president wondered why those who led Nigerian boxers to a disastrous doping test outing, and were eventually banned as a result, could still be allowed in the Nigeria boxing circle.

He said that boxing as a sport would collapse in the country if the agenda of transgender was allowed to succeed.

Omo-Agege called on the Nigerian sporting authority to critically assess the issue, while also being mindful of President Tinubu’s disposition towards transgender.

He commended the International Boxing Association (IBA) President, Umar Kremlev, for his unrelenting support towards Nigerian boxers, noting that the 500 boxing gloves donated to Nigerian boxers recently, demonstrated his love for Nigeria Boxing.

Omo-Agege also commended the President of Africa Boxing Confederation, Eyassu Wossen, for his role in developing boxing in Africa. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Oyome secures third consecutive title at 2025 IBB Ladies Open

Oyome secures third consecutive title at 2025 IBB Ladies Open

By Victor Okoye

Evelyn Oyome has secured an impressive third consecutive win at the IBB Ladies Amateur Golf Open 2025 after overcoming difficult opposition to defend her title.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament, which was its 26th edition, teed off on Feb. 13 and ended on Feb. 16.

No fewer than 450 golfers from five African countries participated in the week-long tournament, held at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

Oyome, a seasoned amateur golfer from Ikoyi Club, beat off intense pressure from 18 year-old Grace Agbo and Diana Osmond on the final day to make it three wins in a row, having won it in 2023 and 2024.

Oyome, who is also the President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), grossed a total score of 248 after posting 82, 79, and 87 gross over three days to retain the title.

An elated Oyome told NAN that hard work and the support of her caddie ensured her victory.

“Winning this tournament again, the 26th edition is just so awesome, and I congratulate myself as well as my country, Nigeria.

“My caddie was one of the best I had today. He kept forging me on to go ahead, and anytime I missed my put, he encouraged me, and that gave me the courage to forge on.

“Playing with the youngsters was actually very interesting, and I can tell you that those are the players I am going to hand over the baton to in the nearest future,” she said.

She revealed that her secret was her short game, adding that she usually does not hit long but ensures that she does her one, two on the green.

She admitted that even though the final day was very difficult and challenging because of the hot weather, she psyched and told herself that she wasn’t playing against any other person but the field.

“Day one was a little bit not bad and not a good feeling for me. I was just in the middle. I had double bogeys on some holes, and I managed to play 82 gross.

“But day two was actually the day that brought me back to this tournament. I played 79 gross; 41 front nine, and 38 back nine.

“Everything went well. My putting was perfect, and my short game was good. But, day 3 wasn’t too good for me, probably due to excessive heat from the sun, but I still found myself winning,” she said.

Nigeria’s Agbo finished as runner up in the category for handicap 0 to 18 with a total gross score of 252, after posting 84, 85, and 83 gross over three days to beat Osmond on countback

While, fellow compatriot Osmond settled for the second runner-up position with a total gross score of 252 after posting 84, 84, 84.

The winner smiled home with a return ticket to London courtesy of Arik Air, while the runner up won a return ticket to Uyo, including an all-expense paid weekend at the Ibom Golf Resort, courtesy of deestravels.

A total prize money of $5,000 was up for grabs in the Ladies Professional category with Nigeria’s Rachael Danjuma emerging winner as she smiled home with a $1,300 cash prize

Eva Magala of Uganda finished as runner-up to settle for a $ 900 cash prize, while Nigeria’s Uloma Ogbuokiri settled for the second runner-up prize of $700.

In the Ladies Special Category for handicap 29 to 54, J. Umolu playing off handicap 344 returned a gross score of 104 and 70 nett to emerge winner of the category.

J. Kpamor won the veteran Ladies category after she played off handicap 24 with a total gross 135 (69 + 66) over two days.

G. Omisore was the winner of the Super Veteran category, after she played off handicap 43 and garnered 38 stable ford points.

An excited lady captain, Julie Donli, described the event as memorable and a success, noting that it was the biggest Ladies Open ever in the history of the club.

Donli noted that players came from far and wide to enjoy three days of good golfing experience.

“We had over 450 golfers that participated in this event. We also had over 50 clubs from the various parts of Nigeria, with five countries.

“This is the biggest ever Ladies Open, not just in Nigeria, and I am very happy about it.

“I believe that the participants were happy with the course as the IBB International Golf course meets international standards.

“They are very few of them, and we are one of the best in the world. So, it’s every golfers dream to play here, and of course, it has an excellent hospitality that comes with it,” she said.

She attributed the success of the event to good and early planning.

“Good planning is very important. We actually started planning this like over six months back.

“Six months back, we had everything ready. When I say everything, I mean everything was ready. All we had to do was check. We kept checking and had our plan B just in case plan A doesn’t work.

“So, I think early planning, commitment, hard work by my team members and I was responsible for this,” she said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
