The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) through its Women Commission, has urged women to be more involved in sports and other walks of life to inspire the next generation leaders.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this was the message at the body’s celebration of the 2024 International Women’s Day on Friday in Abuja.

The theme of this year’s event was “Inspire Inclusion.” #Strong women, strong world.

The president of NOC, Habu Gumel, said the event was very significant to the NOC, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and the entire Olympic movement in the whole world.

He said that the month of March was always dedicated to the celebration of Women’s Day and not just March 8 alone.

“So today here in Abuja, we are celebrating the Women’s Day, and you can see the large number of gatherings of women that are here with us to celebrate.

“They are so important to us. We want as many as possible, as we cannot do without them.

“In the IOC, we always advocate for gender-balance because we believe that whatever the men can do, the women can do it also.

“The ratio of men to women in the IOC now is about 60:40, and it will even be about 50:50 with time.

“Likewise, in the NOC, we are doing our best to make sure that we have a lot of women in our schools, in our board, and everywhere else.

“Most of our programmes are tailored toward encouraging women as athletes, coaches, administrators and technical officials,” he said

Gumel said the leadership of NOC would continue to encourage and support the participation of women to come on board and take leadership positions.

The Chairperson, NOC Women’s Commission, Prof. Florence Adeyanju harped on the roles of women in making the sports industry and other sectors better.

Adeyanju who was represented by Olubunmi Oluode, the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, said that the role of the women in sports cannot be over emphasised.

“We are celebrating women, we are celebrating inclusion and we are celebrating the fact that women are still achieving, that we are breaking barriers and stereotypes.

“We have women all across the sports industry that are doing well and that is the essence of bringing out every other woman to take part in this event.

“If you look at Nigeria’s participation at the just concluded African Games, you will see that our women achieved even more than our male athletes.

“So, my message today is for more women to be included not just in sports, but also in the educational, military, health and other sectors of human endeavours,” she said.

Kemi Obidahunsi, Secretary, NOC Women Commission, said that the role of the commission was to cater for the welfare of women in sports, including athletes, coaches, officials and sports administrators.

She said that for the first time the IOC was celebrating a 50/50 representation of both male and female athletes and officials in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“So, we are celebrating that the women are rising up to the task in the sporting industry, and we are also celebrating ourselves as women and the strength we possess.

“When we talk about women inclusion, we are not saying we want to compete with our male counterparts or rub shoulders with them.

“All we are saying is that where men are, the women can also be there. So it doesn’t have to be competition,” she said.

NAN also reports that the celebration began with a 2km walk which started off from the Ministry of Finance and ended at the Eagles Square. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh says Nigeria has the capacity to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, with improvement in its facilities.
The minister stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing newsmen  on the performance of Team Nigeria at the just concluded 13th African Games in Ghana.
Enoh  decried the fact that no African country has hosted the Commonwealth Games since inception.
According to him,  it remains a black spot on African countries not to have  hosted the Games despite being a member since its inception.

“While in Ghana during the 2023 All African Games, I appealed for African countries particularly Nigeria to submit bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

“I saw it as a black spot on Africa for not being able to host the Games since its inception in 1930.

“And of course we have the facilities to host such big tournament like the Commonwealth Games.

“All we need to do is to start preparations early, revive some of the facilities, build some and improve the state of others across the country.

“Though, I don’t think I am going to be in office as the Minister of Sports at that time but it’s what we can start now and achieve if there’s continuity after leaving the office,”he said.

The minister also commended Team Nigeria’s “gallant’ performance at the the 13th African Games  in Ghana, where Nigeria emerged second behind Egypt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria finished with 47 gold, 33 silver and 40 bronze medals.

Enoh, however, stressed that preparations for the 14th African Games slated for Egypt in 2027 must start now, if Nigeria is to displace the likes of Egypt on the continent.

“For the next Games, our preparations will be better. For this Games, we will interrogate what happened.
“We aimed to finish top of the medals table, however history shows we’ve finished top only once, but with hard work and determination, serious leadership and planning, we can achieve this,” Enoh said.

He assured that all hands will be on deck, working with the high performance centre and other stakeholders to ensure early preparations for Nigeria.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mr Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade, the South-South Representative on the Board of the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), has donated two international standard table tennis boards to the Cross River Table Tennis Federation.

Ebikpolade, who spoke while presenting the items on Tuesday in Calabar, said the gesture was to rekindle interest in the game.

”We need to groom cadet players in this game, for us to achieve this, we must provide the needed facilities,” he said.

He also promised to refurbish the floor of the play area in the state to make the game more pleasurable and competitive.

”What we have in the state is not of international standard. We shall refloor the play area and make it more conducive for players,” he said.

Ebikpolade, also the Chairman, Bayelsa Table Tennis Federation, expressed worries that serious attention was not being given to table tennis.

Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade, Board Member representing the South-South in the NTTF handing over the ITTF standard boards to Cross River Table Tennis Federation

”Not much attention is given to table tennis in Nigeria, so this donation is a conscious intervention to rekindle the interest of younger players.

”Similar donations have been made in the other South-South states. We can’t talk about developing the game without facilities,” he said.

The ITTF official stated that the federation was committed towards providing facilities and scholarship awards to talented cadet players in the country.

Receiving the boards, Mrs Agnes Atsu, Cross River Commissioner for Sports, described the donation as a good omen to table tennis development in the state.

”We are happy to receive these table tennis boards from you. We are calling on other stakeholders to support sports development in the state,” she said.

Also speaking, Mr Usen Umoh, the Vice Chairman, Cross River Table Tennis Federation, commended Ebikpolade for the gesture.

He said that the equipment would help the state to produce more talents in the game of table tennis in future.

”One thing that is capable of keeping our youths meaningfully busy is sports, so an investment in sports is a step in the right direction.

”I urge the organised private sector and other stakeholders to support sports development in the country, this is because government alone cannot do it,” Umoh disclosed.

A maiden tennis competition for veterans in South South Nigeria opened on Friday in Benin with more than 70 players.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event is being organised by Elo Jackson International, in collaboration with the Edo Tennis Association.

Declaring the event open, Joseph Osawaro, Chairman, Edo Tennis Association, described the tournament as the first of its kind in the whole of Sub-Sahara Africa.

The journey of the competition, he said, started in 2023 when Elo Jackson International organised a tennis tourney tagged “Edo 2023” for veterans in the state.

According to him, from the excitement, fun and camaraderie shared amongst the veteran players who participated in the edition, the sponsor decided to extend the tournament to the whole of the South-South region.

The chairman, who was represented by a member of the Edo Tennis Association board, Spatus Ujiomoh, applauded Dr Elo Jackson for single handedly sponsoring the tournament.

“Our tennis arena, nestled within the remodeled Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, stands ready to witness remarkable matches and memorable moments.

“As we gather here, we honour the legacy of tennis veterans and their unwavering passion for the game.

“Beyond the competition, this tournament serves as a platform for physical exercise, rejuvenation and networking.

“It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of tennis enthusiasts who continue to inspire us,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Jackson who is bankrolling the tournament, said he was motivated by a similar competition for veteran badminton players in Africa.

He noted that except for Europe, nowhere was a tournament organised for veteran African tennis players.

“Last year, we were able to organise one for the whole of Edo State, hosted at the University of Benin and it was a huge success.

“The president of the Tennis Federation said we should extend it to the whole South South and that would make it merrier and better than what we are doing today.

“We have extended it to the whole South South and representatives from the six states are here.

“Tennis players anywhere are a family. We gave them a short notice and they are all here. They are all big men in their various businesses and career,” he said.

Jackson, who is the Vice Chairman of the Edo Tennis Association, said the competition would offer a platform for the veterans to recreate, relax, exercise and network.

If sponsorship is secured, the organiser said he planned to extend the tourney to veterans in the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Tunde Alara, has identified sporting activities as instruments that boost the social skills, physical fitness and mental well-being of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Alara, represented by  Alara Oluwasegun, a Lawyer, made the assertion at the 17th Edition Inter-house Sports of the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inter-house sports featured many activities including march-past, egg race, sack race, fishing game, blind folding race, fill-in-the-bottle and fill-in-the-basket game.

Other activities featured in the inter-house sports included walking race, 50 and 100 metres race for boys and girls from some selected special schools across Lagos State.

The children were grouped into four different houses/teams comprising Ivory house in blue colour, NSIA house in yellow colour, Opeodu house in red colour and Somolu house in green colour.

Alara, who was the Chairman of the occasion, said that the inter-house sports was a means of portraying awareness and total inclusion of persons with disabilities in the society particularly those with down syndrome.

According to him, sports is a therapeutic procedures for psychological and mental development, saying that the programme serves as a means of giving people with disabilities a sense of belonging.

He, therefore, urged the public to shun all forms discrimination/stigmatisation against PWDs and incorporate them into the society because they were also humans created by God.

“The essence of the the inter-house sports activities is to boost the self esteem, social skills, physical fitness, psychological and mental well-being of the children.

“The society needs to stop discriminating people with disabilities; they should be given that sense of belonging because we are all human,” he said.

Speaking, the National Coordinator of DSFN, Mrs Nike Dennis, said the inter-house sports was one of the activities used by the Foundation to mark the World Down Syndrome Day celebrated annually on March 21.

Dennis said it was also an opportunity for the children to showcase their talents and abilities.

According to her, lack of adequate sport facilities has been a major challenge facing the programme for long now, having being in existence over 15 years ago.

Dennis, therefore, called on parents, organisations, philanthropists and governments to assist with provision of basic sporting facilities and sponsorships to aid development of the programme, which had made enormous impacts on the lives of people with down syndrome.

Also, Mr Joseph Obah, Chairman, Board of DSFN, said that the programme was an indication that people with down syndrome could participate in various sports activities as well as all endeavours of life.

According to him, the inter-house sports has made massive impacts in the lives of children with down syndrome, saying that it has produced athletes that have participated in international Olympics.

“The children were grouped into four different houses/teams; which is way of encouraging team work spirit, unity and togetherness among them,” he said.

Obah, therefore, called for total inclusion of young adults with down syndrome in the society particularly in the workforce.

He said that their rights should be protected like every other human being in the society.

“With their performance today, it shows that there is nothing they cannot do.

“People with down syndrome need to be integrated into every aspects of life particularly into the workforce to enable them contribute to economic development.

“That is why we are clamouring for equity and inclusion of all because we all have equal rights.

“Let no one be left behind, not even people with disabilities,” Obah said.

Also, Moyosore Ijaye, a down syndrome person, expressed satisfaction and excitement over the inter-house sports activities.

Ijaye said the programme gave him the opportunity to exercise and display his talents, saying that he participated in march-past, walking race and many other activities featured in inter-house sports.

Super Eagles: Jalla drums support for indigenous coach

Super Eagles: Jalla drums support for indigenous coach

By Babatunde Ogunrinde

Harrison Jalla, the Chairman, Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to look inwards in choosing  the head  coach for the Super Eagles.

Jalla, who said this while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos,  said  it was time an indigenous coach took over as the  head coach of the Super Eagles.

He said that the NFF had engaged foreign coaches for more than eight years without substantial results to show for it.

“With more than five unproductive years with Gernot Rohr and almost two years of Jose Paseiro, with Coach Austine Eguavoen making a brief stint in-between.

“It is time to engage our indigenous coaches with the same  terms and conditions given to Gernot Rohr and Jose Paseiro.

“Any attempt to treat indigenous coaches differently will be resisted,” Jalla said.

“The performance of indigenous coaches in the last three editions of AFCON is a clear indicator that African coaches are better than their European counterparts.

“Nigeria must take a cue from Morocco, Senegal and Cote d`Ivoire  who won the three last editions of the AFCON with indigenous coaches,” he said.

Indigenous coaches

He said that the last two foreign coaches, Rohr and  Paseiro left no legacy other than destroying the Super Eagles traditional pattern of free flow football.

“None of these foreign coaches could attain Coach Stephen Keshi ’s 2013 AFCON record.

Jalla urged  the NFF to invest in the development of  indigenous coaches from the annual technical grants from FIFA and CAF for the benefit of our football.

According to Jalla, the nucleus of the team that won the 2013 AFCON are home based players.

“We have a legion of ex-internationals that are qualified to handle the Super Eagles, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, Finidi George, Emeka Ezeugo among others.

“Nigeria was once at the 5th position in FIFA rankings, but clueless football administrators have pulled us to where we are today by recycling visionless leaders.

“The time to break that monopoly is now and it will certainly happen in a matter of weeks,”he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
