The European University of Nigeria (EUN), Abuja, has announced a minimum Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) score of 150 for admission into its 2025/2026 academic session.
The university also outlined a reform-driven model aimed at addressing systemic weaknesses in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ibezim, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a news conference ahead of the institution’s maiden matriculation ceremony.
He spoke on the theme, “Addressing the Gaps in Nigerian University Education: A Practical Reform Agenda”.
Ibezim said the university was established as a strategic response to persistent challenges such as unstable academic calendars, industrial actions, weak university–industry linkages, infrastructure deficits and rising graduate unemployment.
He said EUN was positioned to stem the growing exodus of Nigerian students and academics seeking education abroad by delivering globally competitive training within the country.
“We are delivering European-standard education within Nigeria at affordable rates. This is our contribution to reversing educational migration and conserving foreign exchange for national development,” he said.
Ibezim explained that the institution operates a blended European–Nigerian curriculum, drawing inspiration from leading European academic systems, with visiting lecturers from partner institutions abroad.
He added that discussions were ongoing to deepen collaborations in research, exchange programmes and joint academic initiatives.
According to him, the university currently runs 23 programmes fully approved by the National Universities Commission and recognised by relevant professional bodies.
The programmes include Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Medical Laboratory Science, and Business Administration.
Others are Accountancy, Mass Communication, Anatomy, Public Health, Political Science and Information Technology.
On admissions, he said candidates who scored a minimum of 150 in the UTME conducted by JAMB were eligible to apply, describing the cut-off as part of efforts to expand access without compromising standards.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that private universities operate under stringent regulatory conditions without benefiting from TETFund allocations, despite heavy investments in infrastructure, personnel and laboratories.
He added that professional programmes such as Pharmacy, Nursing and Law require compliance with additional regulatory bodies, increasing operational costs.
Ibezim said students of private universities were currently excluded from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund scheme, though policy discussions were ongoing to expand access.
He maintained that EUN remained one of the more affordable private institutions, offering merit-based and need-based scholarships.
On research and innovation, he said the university prioritised commercially viable projects, including locally fabricated laboratory equipment, digital learning tools, drone technology and computational drug research.
He added that the institution planned to expand into Environmental Impact Assessment services, pharmaceutical production and commercial research support in line with Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.
Ibezim said the university provides modern laboratories, digital classrooms, furnished hostels, 24-hour electricity and water supply, campus-wide Wi-Fi, a medical centre, pharmacy, sports facilities and a secure learning environment.
He emphasised that the institution maintains zero tolerance for drug and substance abuse in collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies.
The Vice-Chancellor announced that admissions for the 2025/2026 academic session were ongoing and invited the public to the maiden matriculation ceremony scheduled for March 7.
“Our vision is that within five years, EUN will rank among Nigeria’s leading institutions in Cybersecurity, Nursing, Pharmacy, Software Engineering and Law, while producing globally competitive, skill-driven graduates,” he said. (NAN)
