The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has presented insurance cheques worth N2.4 billion to beneficiaries and next of kin of 1,075 deceased police officers who died in active service.

Disu said the disbursement was made under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the I-G Family Welfare Scheme.

He explained that the payments covered policy years spanning 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026, including recoveries from insurance obligations that had remained outstanding for several years.

According to him, the welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force remains a central pillar of his administration.

“A police institution that calls upon its personnel to make the highest sacrifices must equally demonstrate responsibility and compassion towards them and their families,” he said.

The I-G described the ceremony as more than a routine presentation of financial benefits, noting that it symbolised a solemn acknowledgement of the courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifices made by the officers.

He extended condolences to the widows, children, parents, and relatives of the deceased, acknowledging the pain of losing loved ones.

“The deceased officers were not only members of the force but also fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and pillars of strength within their families and communities.

“Each day they wore the uniform, they did so with a profound sense of duty, placing the safety and security of others above their own,” he said.

Disu added that their sacrifices would remain etched in the history of the force and the nation, while the presentation underscored the police’s enduring commitment to supporting the families they left behind. (NAN)
