The Nigeria National Park Service (NPS) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are to partner on promoting accountability, transparency, and integrity within the Service.
Dr Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator-General (C-G) of NPS said this at the inauguration and Induction of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) sub-unit of the NPS.
“Corruption, in any form, undermines public trust, weakens institutions, and threatens the very foundation upon which sustainable conservation is built. Today, we take a firm and deliberate step to confront these challenges head-on.
“The establishment of this Sub-Committee is a clear demonstration of our commitment to zero tolerance for corruption,” Goni said.
He urged members of the unit to uphold transparency and responsibility, which he described as the foundation upon which sustainable conservation is built.
“To the members of this Sub-Committee, you have been entrusted with a critical mandate.
“Your role is not merely administrative, it is transformational. You are to serve as the conscience of this institution, the guardians of integrity, and the champions of transparency.
“Your work will require courage, diligence, impartiality, and an unwavering commitment to truth,” he said.
Dr Musa Aliyu, the Chairman of the ICPC, said that the role of ACTU’s remained critical in strengthening institutional systems.
Aliyu, who was represented by Mr Kupolati Olatunji, Head of Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of ICPC, said that through this critical role, ACTU’s ccontinued to serve as vital internal mechanisms preventing corruption and promoting good governance within MDAS.
“This important mandate was achieved through conduct of Sensitisation, System Study and Review, Corruption Risk Assessments, and Monitoring of Budget and Processes, Coordination of Whistleblowing Platforms and undertaking Preliminary Investigation into complaints received amongst others.
“As you assume your responsibilities, I urge members of the Sub-Unit to maintain a strong working relationship with the main ACTU, operate within established guidelines, and uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Aliyu added that their effectiveness would depend largely on their ability to collaborate, report appropriately, and contribute meaningfully to the overall objectives of the ACTU.
He commended the Management for supporting the ACTU in establishing this Sub-Unit, describing it as a step that reflected strong institutional backing for anti-corruption initiatives.
“I also wish to specially acknowledge that the ACTU of the National Park Sub-Unit it marks a milestone in deepening the reach of the ACTU framework for a wider coverage of anti-corruption activities across the Service’s field offices.
“It is important to emphasise that the ACTU Sub-Unit is not a standalone body; rather, it operates under the supervision and coordination of the main ACTU.
“The Sub-Unit is therefore expected to function in alignment with the mandate, guidance, and directives of the main ACTU, ensuring coherence and uniformity in the implementation of anti-corruption strategies across all levels of the Service,” he explained.
Also, Geoffrey Nyigba, Conservator of Parks (CP) and ACTU Chairman in the NPS said that the establishment of this SUB-UNIT was a clear demonstration of their commitment to institutionalising ethical practices and combating corruption at every level.
“To the newly inducted members, I congratulate you. You have been carefully selected based on your integrity, competence, and willingness to serve. Your role is not merely symbolic it is a call to action.
“You are now ambassadors of transparency and watchdogs of accountability within your respective Unit Parks.
Nyigba urged the newly inaugurated sub unit members to demonstrate unwavering integrity in their actions, encourage openness and accountability.
“Report unethical practices without fear or favour, and contribute to building a culture where transparency is the standard, not the exception,” he said.
