Two clerics, Prof. Amidu Sanni, Chief Imam, Lagos State University, and Pastor Charles Ighele of the Holy Spirit Mission Church, Ikeja, have described President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s presence at Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration mass as a demonstration of religious tolerance.

The clerics spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that Tinubu, a Muslim, on Sunday, joined other world leaders to participate in the inauguration mass at St. Peter’s Square, Rome.

Sanni, said that Nigerians should embrace President Tinubu’s religious liberalism and statesmanship to foster unity.

According to him, Tinubu’s participation in the one-hour mass was encouraging.

“As a Muslim, President Tinubu demonstrated the fundamental quality of Islamic liberalism, inclusivism and statesmanship.

“He also held a closed-door meeting with the Nigerian Conference of Catholic Cardinals at the end of the inauguration, when he assured them of his readiness to always support their cause.

“He also appealed to the cardinals to join efforts at making our diversity to enhance our unity,” Sanni said.

He noted that the President had continued to show support for pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

“I, therefore, appeal to Nigerians to see ourselves first as human beings who have the freedom to adopt any religion of choice and to respect that choice without mischief and ill-will or subtle manipulation and coercion, by emulating the President in our conducts with others.

“It shows that tolerance and broad-mindedness are necessary for good leadership which should be emulated at all levels to ensure peaceful coexistence and societal development,” he said.

Commenting, Ighele said that he was not surprised that Tinubu was present at the inauguration in Rome.

According to the bishop, Tinubu’s wife, Remi, is a known Christian.

“A man who has not prevented his wife from her church attendance should be appreciated. We should appreciate the President for this.

“His being in Rome for the Pope’s inauguration should be applauded by all. It shows his level of religious tolerance.

“As a preacher of the Word of God, I believe that we should praise someone when the person does what is good.

“I am not a Catholic, but I was happy seeing him on television among other leaders,” he said.

Ighele said that Tinubu’s action promoted religious harmony.

“There is the need for us as a people to see one another first as humans created by same God.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed commitment to facilitating the importation of renewable energy technologies into the country.
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, made the pledge at the NCS Trade Facilitation Consultative Forum held in Lagos.
The forum had the theme “Trade Facilitation Measures for Renewable Energy and Energy-Efficient Technologies”.
Adeniyi, represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs on Tariff and Trade Facilitation, Caroline Niagwan, said the commitment would involve enforcing fiscal measures to promote a shift from fossil fuel dependency.
He said this was with a view to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that customs efforts to renewable energy primarily involve regulating import of essential equipment like solar panels ensuring duty-free and VAT-free classification to support the development of the sector.
NAN also reports that customs renewable energy operations include classifying solar panels under specific Harmonised System (HS) codes, ensuring consistent and fair treatment of imports, and streamlining procedures for compliant businesses.
Adeniyi said that the Green Customs Initiative responds to the growing number of legally binding Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and recognises the critical role customs play in enforcing them.
“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government continues to champion policies that foster investment, ensure sustainability, and promote responsible industrial practices, as outlined in Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP),” Adeniyi said.
In his welcome address, the Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs in Charge of Zone ‘A’, Charles Orbih, said the Advance Ruling Programme of NCS was officially inaugurated on May 2, 2024.
“Our focus on renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies showcases our innovative approach to customs administration, adapting to evolving global priorities and consumer demands.
“In alignment with one of our strategic pillars – collaboration, the Nigeria Customs Service is proud to partner with GIZ, the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP) and other numerous stakeholders to host this forum.
“The forum reflects growing consumer demand and evolving policy focus on renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies,” Orbih said.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Mr Mahmud Mamman, said trade facilitation played a crucial role in advancing renewable energy.
Mamman said that it showed energy efficiency by reducing barriers to the movement of renewable energy technologies and components across borders.
He said that simplifying customs procedures made it easier and more cost-effective to import renewable energy equipment, such as solar panels and batteries, thereby accelerating the deployment of renewable energy schemes.
Mamman said trade facilitation attracts foreign investment and expertise, enabling countries to develop advanced energy solutions and enhance efficiency.
He said the Federal Ministry of Power was committed to providing adequate, affordable, and reliable power supply which was guided by three key frameworks.
Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Massimo De Luca, said the forum underscored collective commitment to addressing the critical nexus between trade policy, sustainable development, and climate action.
Represented by the Managing Director, Mrs Thessa Bagu, he said that the theme of this year’s forum resonated deeply with the shared priorities of Nigeria and the European Union in fostering green growth and sustainable economic development.
“We are proud to support Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda and energy transition plan through our extensive cooperation with the German Government.
“This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to the principles of partnership, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in addressing global challenges,” De Luca said.
The Logistics Manager, CIG Motors, Mr Agu Boniface, testified to the processing of the Advance Ruling Programme, which he said had enhanced their operations and reduced time of doing business.
He said that his company applied for the Advance Ruling Programme and got feedback within 15 days of application, adding that it took them seven days to get the delivery.
The Country Director, GIZ Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr Markus Wagner, commended NCS for the initiative and underscored the vital role the Nigeria Customs Service plays in advancing Nigeria’s sustainable development goals and energy transition.
“Through the successful launch of the Advance Ruling Systems, we have substantially simplified customs processes for importing clean energy components, directly supporting Nigeria’s ambitious green energy transformation.
“With the valuable support of our commissioning parties, in this case the German Government and the European Union through the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, which is implemented by GIZ in strong collaboration with the Nigerian partners.
“Our collaboration has already delivered tangible results: shorter customs clearance times and reduced administrative burdens for clean energy importers.
“Today’s inauguration of the handbook on import and export procedure for renewable energy and energy efficient technologies represents another pivotal step toward enhancing ease of doing business across Nigerian borders,” he added.
In his paper presentation titled The Role of Effective Communication Strategy as a Variable Tool to Deepen Trade Facilitation, Assistant Comptroller, Abdullah Maiwada, explained the importance of communication to stakeholders regardless of their language differences.

Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer for the Nigeria Customs Service, stated that managing stakeholder relationships would enable effective trade facilitation for sustainable growth.

He said that in today’s fast-evolving global trade environment, the strategic deployment of effective communication was not just a supportive function, but a catalyst for transformation.
Maiwada said that effective communication was a bridge between policy practice, when used deliberately and strategically. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has launched campaign against human trafficking and violence against persons in secondary schools in Delta.
The Commander, NAPTIP Benin Zonal Command, Mr Sam Offiah, who inaugurated the Anti-Human Trafficking Vanguard in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta, said the sensitisation has become imperative to ward off the predators from prying on the students.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NAPTIP, in partnership with Delta Government, formally inaugurated 30 students as Vanguards in Abraka Grammar School, and another 30 students in Erho Secondary School, both in Abraka as the agency’s ambassadors in the schools.
According to Offiah, the target is to cover 50 secondary schools in the state within a given space of time.
He, however, said the agency in this first phase would cover 10 secondary schools this week which has been flagged off in two schools in Abraka.
The commander said that the students were the vulnerable group and target of traffickers, adding that stepping up the sensitisation with the inauguration of the students’ vanguard was the best way to curb the menace of child trafficking and ensure a violence-free nation.
He said, “Today, we have established two vanguards in the two schools in Delta and the essence is to enable them represent us and to speak to other students, community and their friends about human trafficking so that the scourge could be reduced to the barest minimum in the state.
“We know that the traffickers target these children because they are vulnerable. So, our objective is to make our nation free from human trafficking and help the children grow to their full potential.”
He said that the Agency would support and groom the students to become equipped with requisite knowledge on issues of human trafficking and to become advocates in their schools to enlighten others about human trafficking.
“They are the soldiers, ambassadors of NAPTIP to make our children free from the traffickers. At this operational period, we are raising 30 students per school but going forward, we expect that the club member would increase through the efforts of the pioneers.
“Over time, all the students would become ambassadors of NAPTIP through awareness creation and our target is to make every child ambassador and our goal is to make our nation free from human trafficking.”
On his part, Mr Maclean Eze, Deputy Director, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and Desk Officer, School Anti-Trafficking Education Advocacy Project (STEAP), said the state government taskforce on human trafficking and irregular migration has become operational.
According to Eze, the taskforce is aimed at protecting the rights of the citizens and to prosecute human traffickers.
He advised the students to be good ambassadors of the state and shun greed but speak out on issues of human trafficking in their environment.
Also, Mrs Ijoma Nwanze, Secretary, State Taskforce on Human Trafficking and Irregular Migrations, said the taskforce was set up by government to fight against and reduce the scourge in the state.
According to her, the Vanguard will advocate for the state in all the schools and in the communities.
The Principals of Abraka Grammar School and Erho Secondary School, Mr Lucky-Jones Dibie and Mrs Edna Eremo respectively, lauded NAPTIP and the state government for selecting their schools for the programme.
They pledged their support to ensure that the project succeeded and advanced the advocacy against human trafficking in the society.
Some of the students in an interview with NAN expressed understanding of the subject matter and pledged their resolve to be a voice against human trafficking in their schools.
The highpoint of the event was the formal inauguration of the NAPTIP Anti-Trafficking and Violence Against Persons Vanguard and unveiling of the NAPTIP sign posts in both schools. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) has warned dealers to desist from adulterating farm inputs or face the law.
Its Managing Director, Rabiu  Bichi, made the announcement during a press briefing in Kano.
He decried that Nigerian farmers, particularly in the North, had suffered significant losses due to the unpatriotic actions of some farm inputs’ dealers who sold adulterated fertilisers, seedlings, and other inputs.
According to Bichi, the authority will this season, crack down on the dealers of adulterated farm inputs, having established mechanisms to identify and penalise them.
Bichi urged the public to report any dealers of adulterated farm inputs to the relevant authorities like the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and HJRBDA.
He warned that these fake products posed serious health risks, including cancer, to Nigerians.
“My call on the public is to be on the look and report anybody found selling adulterated farm inputs to NAFDAC, SON and other relevant authorities.
“Such adulterated farm inputs made farmers incur losses last season and have potential to cause diseases like cancer.
“This time around, we will be very vigilant to ensure good farm inputs are distributed to farmers and go after those selling adulterated ones and punish them,” he warned.
Bichi also explained that the authority is committed to transforming river basin development and food security initiatives.
The managing director stated that the authority had embarked on a transformative journey to boost the socio-economic development of the river basin.
According to Bichi, this involves introducing innovative irrigation techniques and optimising existing systems.
He said, “A comprehensive review has been conducted, and specialised committees have been established to formulate a strategic action plan.
Bichi added that the authority had identified key strategies to enhance food production and security within the basin, aligning with the President’s emergency food security directive.
He explained, “Committees have been established to promote sustainable development, strengthen food security, and improve community livelihoods.”
Bichi expressed enthusiasm, looking forward to a robust stakeholders’ collaboration to achieve these goals. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ebonyi Gov. raises newly recruited doctors’ salaries to N500,000

Ebonyi Gov. raises newly recruited doctors’ salaries to N500,000

Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has announced an increase in the monthly salaries and allowances of newly recruited medical doctors in the state, from N150,000 to N500,000.

Nwifuru made the announcement in Abakaliki during the inauguration of the state’s health activation programme, which was in preparation for the Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) scheme.

He also took the opportunity to inaugurate hospital equipment worth billions of naira.

The governor emphasised that doctors deserved higher pay to help them perform at their best and support their families.

“I came across an analysis on social media regarding the inadequacy of the N150,000 salaries and allowances for doctors.

“After issuing questionnaires, I found that the analysis was valid and action needed to be taken,” he explained.

Nwifuru highlighted the high cost of living, noting that doctors working in areas like Ivo Local Government Area spent significant amounts on fuel.

“A doctor working in Ivo, for example, needs about 20 litres of fuel daily. If you multiply that for 28 days, you’ll see the real cost,” he said.

He acknowledged the challenges of the medical profession, sharing that he had initially considered becoming a doctor but opted out after struggling with organic chemistry.

“Doctors deserve more. I have decided that their salaries and allowances should be a minimum of N500,000 monthly, and this applies only to newly recruited doctors,” he stated.

The governor urged doctors to make use of the accommodation provided in various local government areas to reduce living costs.

He also directed the state’s Commissioner for Health to expedite the completion of the quarters, ensuring they were conducive for habitation.

“Living at the various localities will help doctors save costs and avoid distractions from their families,” Nwifuru added.

Dr Moses Ekuma, the state’s Commissioner for Health, lauded the governor for procuring the new medical equipment, assuring that they would be used effectively.

“The procurement of this equipment will complement the availability of modern health facilities and a motivated workforce in the state,” he said.

Mrs Jioke Chinwendu, the Executive Secretary of the State Drug Management Agency, also pledged the agency’s commitment to ensure the consistent availability of drugs in health facilities across the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Niger government has solicited for media collaboration on how to address the challenge of misinformation in reporting security issues.

The Commissioner for Homeland Security, Retired Gen. Muhammed Bello, made the call during a pre- security summit news conference in Minna on Monday.

Bello said misinformation and disinformation posed significant threats to effective security information management in the state.

He highlighted the need for strategic communication in security contexts to balance transparency and confidentiality.

“Decisions about what information to share and what to withhold can be complex and fraught with ethical considerations,” he said.

According to him, to combat misinformation, the state government is exploring ways to work with the media to promote accurate and responsible reporting on security issues.

He said that security information management involved systematically collecting, analysing, sharing, and protecting information about threats, incidents, vulnerabilities, and risks that impact public safety.

According to him, the rise of social media and digital platforms has increased the risk of misinformation affecting public perception and security.

The commissioner reiterated that the state government would host security summit on May 22 that would bring together government officials, security agencies, traditional and religious institutions.

Other participants at the summit would be youth and women associations, and inter-tribal organisations, transport groups, human rights groups, and the media to discuss collaborative approaches to security and peacebuilding.

Bello disclosed that the theme of the summit would be: Collaborative Approaches to Security and Peace Building with a View to Safeguarding Niger State Security Information Management. (NAN)

Lagos urges support for local production

Lagos urges support for local production

By Aderonke Ojediran

The Lagos State Government has urged Nigerians to embrace locally made products to boost Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and strengthen the national economy.

Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs Folasade Ambrose, made the appeal on Monday during the 16th National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment (NCITI).

The event was hosted by the Lagos State Government and organised by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Its theme is: ‘Accelerating Diversification to Rebuild Prosperity by Leveraging Industry, Trade and Investment for Shared Prosperity.’

According to Ambrose, Nigeria urgently needs to reduce its over-reliance on oil by diversifying the economy.

“For Nigeria to remain economically relevant, we must produce and consume more local goods rather than depend on imports,” she said.

She noted that Nigeria is at a crossroads and economic diversification is now crucial for survival and global relevance.

Ambrose added that past disruptions have shown the danger of depending on a single resource, which limits long-term growth.

She stated that the Sanwo-Olu administration is building a business-friendly environment to attract investment and promote industrial growth.

Efforts include infrastructure development, policy reforms, and the Lekki Free Zone, which hosts the Dangote Refinery.

Other measures are improvements in land administration, tax transparency, and broader industrial support.

Ambrose also highlighted the laying of 3,000km of fibre optic cables to reduce data costs for businesses.

“Lagos has launched an industrial policy- 2025–2030- to support MSMEs, large-scale industries, and global investors,” she said.

She stressed that trade is a major pillar of Lagos’ economy and key to empowering local producers and exporters.

“Trade is not just commerce; it drives inclusion, reduces poverty, and supports shared prosperity,” Ambrose stated.

She said Lagos remains committed to providing a transparent and secure environment for investors.

“In the past year alone, Lagos attracted over $600 million — more than N1 trillion — in new investments,” she said.

Ambrose encouraged both state and federal governments to explore new markets and embrace the digital economy.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb. Nura Rimi, said Nigeria must act quickly to adapt shifting global economy.

“The global economy is shifting. Nigeria must diversify with purpose and responsive policies,” he said.

He described manufacturing as the backbone of industrial growth and key to improving export performance.

“We must ease business processes, attract investors, and expand finance access for SMEs,” he added.

Rimi said the meeting was an opportunity to develop actionable policies to support industry and trade.

“Our ministry is committed to fostering business growth and building investor confidence,” he said.

Economist and keynote speaker, Abiodun Adesire, said no nation prospers by relying on imports.

He argued that reviving Nigeria’s manufacturing sector was essential for economic survival.

“We must produce what we consume. Oil dependence harms our economy,” he said.

He added that Nigeria is not producing enough and must focus more on local manufacturing.

“History proves that nations grow rich by processing — not exporting — raw materials,” Adesire said.

He stressed that Nigeria has the potential to lead Africa’s industrial growth, adding that “Nigeria must actively attract investors. Buying local is a patriotic act”.

He urged governments to implement policies that support manufacturing as a path to prosperity. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
