Stop using NNPP for unwarranted attacks on Presidency – Party to Kwankwaso

Stop using NNPP for unwarranted attacks on Presidency – Party to Kwankwaso

The National Leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has cautioned Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso to stop using the party’s name for unwarranted attacks on the Presidency and All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Oginni Olaposi said this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.
Olaposi stated that the contract between the party and Kwankwaso, its presidential candidate in 2023 has ended.
He pointed out that the Memorandum of Understanding between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiya movement, led by Kwankwaso had long been terminated.
“Kwankwaso should stop parading himself as a member of our party, attacking the APC and the presidency, using the NNPP where he had long been expelled from.
“If his followers abandoned him for the APC, which is their constitutional rights, it is for him to look inwards to find out why.
“Kwankwaso has no position in the NNPP aside from being its candidate in 2023. The Leader of the NNPP remains Dr Boniface Aniebonam, Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party.
“Aniebonam founded and registered the NNPP in 2002 and do not engage in reckless statements against constituted authority in Nigeria.”
Olaposi reiterated that Kwankwaso and his group had been expelled from the NNPP and that they should refrain from using the name of the party for unwarranted attacks on the presidency or anyone/persons.
“The alleged recent outburst and attack on the personality of President Bola Tinubu by Kwankwaso and his expelled group are their views and not that of the NNPP.
“Recall that Kwankwaso on April 3, lost his suit against the NNPP, led by Aniebonam and the Dr Agbo Major led National Working Committee at an Abuja High Court.
“We hereby tender an unreserved apology to Tinubu and the entire APC family led by Dr Abdullahi Ganduje for Kwankwaso’s utterances, insult, maligning and abuse of the President and APC led Federal Government of Nigeria.
“As a vibrant and responsible political party, NNPP shall continue to contribute our own quota to national development through constructive engagements on policies of the incumbent government.
“The credentials of NNPP showed clearly that we are not out to play “dirty politics”.
“All of them, including but not limited to Kwankwaso, Elder Buba Galadima and the defunct NWC members of NNPP led by Dr Ahmed Ajuji are not members of NNPP any longer. They stand expelled presently.
“They have been expelled and ratified by the Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja declaratory judgments.
“These two judgments, including the authority of NNPP internal democracy that expelled them cannot be over emphasised.”
He, therefore, appealed to the general public and the media to stop referring to Kwankwaso in particular, as the leader of NNPP.
“Kwankwaso is the leader of the Kwankwassiya Movement not NNPP.”

‘House of Naira’ weaves culture, metaphor to spotlight Nigeria’s unity challenges

‘House of Naira’ weaves culture, metaphor to spotlight Nigeria’s unity challenges

An emotionally gripping new musical theatre production, ‘House of Naira’, has premiered using the metaphor of a polygamous marriage to explore the persistent divide within Nigerian society.

The play is created and produced by Kehinde Oretimehin, Chief Executive Officer of Kabiyesi Studios.

Speaking at the premiere in Lagos, Oretimehin said he was inspired to create the play after the last general elections.

According to Oretimehin, he observed that Nigerians could be very be supportive outside the shores of the nation but resenting back home.

He said that he decided to use his craft, musical theatre, to write the story, in order to reach out to people.

“I want people to understand that if we keep fighting ourselves, Nigeria will die,” he said.

The play opens with a symbolic breaking news alert about the falling Naira.

It then transitions into a birthday announcement by a man – Mr Naira, who is constantly referred to as Husband – in the play.

The man has four wives, each vying for his love, but all indifferent to his challenges and struggles.

Through emotional highs and lows, the story unveils a man’s dream of building a united dynasty, only to be dragged down by family politics, greed, envy, and the crushing weight of unmet expectations.

The play, a domestic and family drama, is a political allegory, depicting how tribalism and division undermines Nigeria’s social fabric.

The producer explained that the wives in the story represent Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups with each wife assured of the man’s love,  the same as how each region claims ownership of the nation’s promise.

External influences, such as the mother-in-law among others, mirror the role of political actors, cultural bias, and external interference in Nigeria’s affairs.

In spite of the emotional intensity and interpersonal chaos, the story reaches a climax where it was obvious that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

Oretimehin urged Nigerians to be united, noting that the strength of the nation was in its diversity and shared heritage.

“We’re supposed to come together to harness our structural ability together.

“We need to love ourselves, we have everything that we need,” he said.

The production’s cast, which included Debbie Ohiri, Oluchi Odii, Bridget Nkem, Sharon Adaeze, Yewande Osamein and Ralph Okoro, brought in decades of experience from the United Kingdom, U.S. and South Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that following the Lagos premiere, House of Naira, is expected to tour other Nigerian cities, and West African countries this year, depending on sponsorship. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

DBN targets N1.8trn loan expansion to boost MSME growth

DBN targets N1.8trn loan expansion to boost MSME growth

Taiye Olaiyemi

The Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) says it is expanding its support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by growing its outstanding loan portfolio to over N1.8 trillion.

Its Managing Director, Mr Tony Okpanachi, told newsmen in Lagos that the move aligns with the bank’s five-year strategic plan, meant to further drive economic development as job creation across Nigeria.

To ensure this increase in lending, he said that DBN was working to attract N3 trillion in debt and equity.

According to him, this funding initiative will empower the bank to provide financial resources to a greater number of MSMEs, a vital sector for economic growth and job creation in the country.

“We want to scale up what we see, what we did the first five years, the next five years, how do we scale up? And that’s a major thing for us.

“We believe that, in Nigeria, there’s still a lot more to be done. So, we are very aspirational in terms of what we need to do,” he said.

The managing director noted that beyond the expansion of its loan portfolio and funding, DBN’s strategic objectives include a strong emphasis on inclusive growth.

He added that the bank aims for 20 per cent of its lending to support women-led businesses and 40 per cent to benefit businesses owned by the poor.

Okpanachi explained that DBN was also prioritising the growth of green financing and increasing its focus on supporting enterprises in underdeveloped states.

He noted that the plan was to facilitate an additional 800,000 jobs, making a creation of two million over the next five years.

The DBN boss explained, “In terms of job creation, last year, remember, last six years, I told you, we’ve done about 1.2 million.

“We want to do at least two million in terms of job creation. That means both direct and indirect job creation.

“Along the profitability side, of course, we want to be financially sustainable. So we’re not taking our eyes off financial sustainability.”

Emphasising the bank’s role as a wholesale lender, the DBN boss clarified that the new target was not cumulative but represented a fresh drive to catalyse growth across various sectors.

He said that DBN continued to expand its funding sources, by deepening relationships with existing partners and seeking new collaborations to increase both debt and equity.

He highlighted ongoing discussions with various international partners and its plans to tap into local capital markets through a bond programme, with the first phase contingent on favourable macroeconomic conditions.

Given the bank’s role as a long-term lender, Okpanachi said, “Strategically, we have to first expand our sources of funding. Two, dip in with the existing ones. How can we get more? Three, how can we use existing ones to catalyse additional ones?” he noted.

He emphasised a deliberate focus on labour-intensive sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture, noting that they promise significant employment generation.

“This strategic move involves consciously favouring sectors that employ more people over those that are heavily reliant on technology.

“You see, sectors like manufacturing, sectors that are labour-intensive, agriculture, all those areas, they provide more jobs.

“So we’re consciously looking at what we find in those sectors that are more labour-intensive,” Okpanachi added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to use their diversity for the country’s stability and rapid development.

The President said this on Sunday in Rome, Italy, when he received members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.

The President also issued a stirring call to leaders at all levels to work for the betterment of the citizenry.

“If we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity, the country’s hope is stability and progress,” Tinubu said.

He said it was historic being the President of Nigeria when a new Pope was inaugurated in Rome.

The Catholic bishops were part of President Tinubu’s delegation to the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV’s on Sunday.

Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, thanked President Tinubu for facilitating their visit to the Vatican to bury the late Pope Francis and witness the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.

He said the development signalled a new era of a more robust relationship between the President and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

“You are always there for us. Now that you have come to the Vatican, whenever we have our conference in Nigeria, we will also invite you, and we look forward to interfacing with you just as you were able to do with the Holy Father,” he said.

China set to establish electric vehicle factories in Nigeria

China set to establish electric vehicle factories in Nigeria

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has revealed that plans are underway to establish electric vehicle factories and other manufacturing ventures in Nigeria.

Dunhai disclosed this to the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Dele Alake at a recent bilateral meeting.

Alake’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, said the ambassador stressed the need for greater collaboration between China and Nigeria to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector by establishing electric vehicle factories.

According to him, the ambassador expressed support for Nigeria’s local value-addition policy, pointing out that one of President Xi Jinping’s key priorities is hinged on promoting Africa’s industrialisation.

Dunhai stated that the leaders of Nigeria and China agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership aimed at creating new opportunities for cooperation.

He recalled that President Bola Tinubu and Jinping, recently held high-level talks during Tinubu’s state visit to China in pursuit of that goal.

Tomori quoted him saying “Chinese companies were already deeply involved in Nigeria’s mining sector, from exploration to processing.

“We aim to deepen this collaboration, especially in line with President Tinubu’s eight priority areas, notably economic diversification through solid minerals,” the ambassador stated.

In response to concerns raised by the solid minerals minister, over the actions of a few operators tarnishing China’s image, the ambassador stated that the embassy and Chinese government had consistently advocated compliance with regulations.

He said that Chinese companies operating in Nigeria had been admonished by their government to abide by the country’s rules and regulations.

He added that the companies were also urged to implement the required Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and adhere to environmental and safety standards.

According to Tomori, the ambassador stressed that Chinese authorities have zero tolerance for illegal mining, and are ready to partner with the Nigerian government to bring suspected culprits to justice.

On his part, Alake stated that Nigeria has a large market and the potential to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels through electric vehicle production.

He acknowledged the long-standing relations between Nigeria and China, stating that most Chinese firms operated within legal and regulatory frameworks.

He, however, expressed concerns over the actions of a few operators, stating that legal actions were being taken to address such situations.

“We have taken action against illegal operators, including some Chinese nationals. While isolated, such incidents undermine the good work of many compliant Chinese firms.

“We need your cooperation in ensuring that such culprits are brought to justice.”

The minister reiterated that Nigeria is open to business to serious investors, stating that investments in the nation’s mining industry remained focused on local value addition.

“We now prioritise local processing to drive Nigeria’s development. For instance, with the abundance of lithium, we want to see local manufacturing of electric vehicles and batteries,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

UNDP urges action to avert flood disasters

UNDP urges action to avert flood disasters

By Abigael Joshua

The UN Development Programme, Global Environment Facility, Small Grants Programme (UNDP GEF SGP) has called on communities to raise awareness, take proactive measures, and prevent flood-related disasters.

Mrs Ibironke Olubamise, National Coordinator of the UNDP GEF SGP, made this appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

“I urge communities to remain vigilant, drawing lessons from past experiences, and not to underestimate the devastating impact of flooding.

“We must improve our strategies and develop clear evacuation plans, including identifying alternative routes for movement,” she added.

Olubamise emphasised that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) could support communities by providing first aid kits in anticipation of potential flooding, rather than waiting until disaster strikes.

“NEMA can also explore traditional knowledge and practices that communities have historically used to prepare for and manage heavy rainfall.

“Relevant agencies should incorporate such indigenous practices to ensure that accurate, timely, and adequate information is disseminated to communities,” she advised.

According to her, this would also help reduce the pressure on emergency response efforts should flooding occur.

“It is essential to enforce compliance with safety guidelines within communities to ensure people adhere to early warnings and advice provided by authorities.

“There are proven communal strategies that have worked in the past. Communities should raise awareness among themselves to enhance their preparedness and understanding of flood risks.

“Stockpiling food in secure locations could be useful in the event that floods disrupt livelihoods, particularly farming and access to markets.

“To stay informed, communities should listen regularly to the radio for updates from relevant authorities, and follow all advice given to ensure the safety of lives and property,” she added.

Olubamise also urged communities to be mindful of the potential risks in the aftermath of flooding.

“There are significant health concerns, such as waterborne diseases, especially when clean water sources are contaminated,” she warned.

She reflected on recent global events, noting, “The world was shaken by another natural disaster on April 23 when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck parts of Bulgaria, Türkiye, Greece, and Romania.

“This incident made me reflect on how relatively fortunate Nigeria is in being spared from certain natural disasters,” she said.

Olubamise acknowledged that while some countries have developed strong systems and infrastructure to respond swiftly to such disasters, Nigeria still has room for improvement.

“Although Nigeria has made progress through the establishment of NEMA and, in some cases, state-level emergency agencies, their efforts are often insufficient for various reasons.

“Therefore, it is vital to explore alternative approaches to address these gaps.

“I believe that widespread awareness campaigns and empowering local communities are essential in managing natural disasters, many of which can be mitigated if the right structures are in place.

“Each year, rainfall leads to flooding across several states, disrupting movement, livelihoods such as farming, food supplies, and, tragically, resulting in loss of life,” she stated.

Olubamise urged Nigerians to ensure that the rainy season remains a blessing, rather than a source of chaos, destruction, and sorrow.

“I call on the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and NEMA to intensify their efforts by engaging in broad awareness campaigns to keep citizens informed about weather forecasts and early warnings,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Price of cattle soar as consumers, butchers groan

Price of cattle soar as consumers, butchers groan

Many butchers and consumers of beef in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have decried the rising cost of cattle in the market.
Some of them who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, said the high cost was due to the current scarcity of the animals occasioned by its transitional period.
Mr Chukwuemeka Victor, a cattle dealer and butcher in Durumi Market, said the prices of the animals increased generally from N150,000 to N200,000 on both the small, medium and big sized cow.
Victor attributed the increase to scarcity of the old species (dry season cow) to give way to the new species (wet season cow).
He said that small sized cow which went for between N350,000 and N400,000 was now being sold for between N500,000 and N600,000.
Victor said that a medium sized cow formerly sold between N600,000 and N700,000 now went for between N800,000 and one million naira while the biggest sized ones now went for between N1.5 million and two million naira.
He said that a kilo of beef formerly sold for between N5000 and N5,500 was now being sold for between N6,500 and N7,000.
“This is the season for the animals to be expensive due to this season when new species of cattle is coming out and the old ones are going.
“Any season it is time for the transition when the new ones are coming out, the old ones become so scarce and expensive just like yams.
“By June to July, the price will come down when the wet season cow will come out very well,” he said.
Another butcher in Nyanya Market, Mr Theophilus Adeoye, said the increase was affecting his business negatively as some of his customers had resorted to other alternatives for their protein need.
“We are running shortages now. I am just buying to maintain some of my customers who still come to patronise me,” he said.
A consumer of beef, Mrs Ifesinachi Okoro, said she no longer purchased beef as the price was higher than her budget and purchasing power.
Okoro said she had resorted to the purchase of fish for her family’s protein needs.
Mrs Beatrice Ejeh, a food vendor, said she had increased the price of a piece of beef from N200 to N250.
“Many of my customers now eat without beef these days.
“Some of them will just request for kpomo just for something to be in their food,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Wabba advocates strong, independent labour unions to protect workers

Wabba advocates strong, independent labour unions to protect workers

A former President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, has called for strong, independent unions that will protect workers across the country.

Wabba made the call at the 42nd National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE)’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Sunday in Abuja.

The theme of the NEC meeting is, ‘Strategic Partnerships Between Unions and Employers: A Potent Catalyst in Unlocking Exponential Growth Opportunities in a Depressed Economy’.

Wabba said that it was important for unions to strive to be strong and independent, not depending solely on checkups dues rather investing to generate revenue for their unions.

According to him, only strong and independent unions can protect workers’ rights, stressing, “if the union is weak, not independent and cannot pay their bills, their members will not respect the leaderships.

“To harness yourselves towards building a stronger union that can defend workers, instead of wasting your resources in all manner of things, you must continue to build on the successes of what our forefathers have built.

“That is, by investing. This is what has been happening globally with trade unions.

“For example, the Local Government Union in Canada has an investment that is over a trillion dollars.

“As we speak, they have bought an entire power sector with workers’ money, which is an investment.

“All over the world, some unions also have the largest hotels, construction companies because they have continued to invest with the workers money and knowing that only strong unions can defend workers,” he said.

Wabba, who is a former global President of the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC), urged unions to ensure that the income of the workers are secured through investments.

He added that, without check dues, the unions can defend workers, as it is being done in other countries such as Germany, China among others.

“Who told you that trade unions cannot fund airlines. Who told you when workers go on strike, their unions cannot use their resources to pay all their members within the period of the strike.

“Through their investments, they can, and even their employers will be afraid of them. That is why you must build a strong union because you have all it takes,” he said.

The labour leader urged members of NUFBTE to support the leadership of the union and ensure peace and tranquillity strive in the union.

Mr Garba Ibrahim, National President of NUFBTE, said there was the need for harmonious relationship, mutual respect, understanding, open dialogue and tolerance among the members.

Ibrahim said efforts had been made to reconcile aggrieved members of the union.

According to him, the current leadership had embarked on reconciliation process of all identified aggrieved members.

He added that with painstaking efforts and prudent management, the leadership had been able to reduce the huge financial debts of the union. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
