Dr Olusegun Abatan, Secretary, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Oyo State, has lamented the demonisation of African traditions, calling for the return of traditional methods in solving complex issues.

Abatan, in a news conference held at the Pensioners’ House, Agbarigo, in Ibadan on Friday, said it was high time the Yoruba revived their culture and traditions with pride.

He bemoaned the double standards exhibited by foreign cultures that secretly practice what they label as ‘backward’ in Africa.

Likewise, he criticised the religious hypocrisy that ridiculed traditional beliefs publicly but secretly sought help from traditionalists, thus affirming the potency of traditional medicine and spirituality.

Condemning the rising insecurity in Yorubaland, Abatan called on traditionalists to spiritually confront kidnappers and bandits by invoking the spirit of Egungun to protect the people.

The pensioners’ scribe clamoured for the return to native policing methods and traditional solutions to complex issues like infertility, epilepsy and community security.

These traditional methods and solutions, he said, had proven effective over generations.

Abatan, therefore, appreciated Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for initiating the World Egungun Festival, celebrated on Thursday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.

According to him, the governor deserves praise for recognising traditional values alongside Christianity and Islam in official government functions.

While also commending the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, for his efforts in organising the festival, he urged other governors to emulate Makinde’s cultural inclusiveness and support. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Ogun II Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service says it has generated over N15billion revenue between January and April.

Customs Area Controller, Mr Bisi Alade, disclosed this at a news conference in Abeokuta on Friday.

Alade noted that the command’s collective efforts and dedication to duty had yielded remarkable achievements in recent months.

He stressed that the revenue was generated through the command’s strategic efforts and unified operations.

The area controller added that the revenue collected for the first quarter of 2025 represented 40 per cent increase compared to the over N9billion generated same period in 2024.

“This achievement is a testament to the diligence, commitment and professionalism of our officers and men who have worked tirelessly to ensure we exceed our revenue targets.

“It is also indicative of our unwavering commitment to the economic growth and development of our nation.

“We generated over N8billion from Excise and over N7billion from free trade zone,” he said.

According to Alade, an unauthorised factory operating illegally was discovered by the command and subsequently brought under excise control.

He attributed the success to several strategic initiatives implemented by the Customs Area Controller in recent months.

He appreciated the policy thrust of the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi’s principles of consolidation, collaboration and innovation.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment and determination to surpass the performance in the coming months with improved compliance of the trading community.

“We will continue to dialogue and educate the stakeholders and the local business community. We shall maintain success through synergy with other partners while discharging our statutory responsibilities,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Understanding your originality is key to finding purpose – Psychiatrist urges boys

Understanding your originality is key to finding purpose – Psychiatrist urges boys

By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko

A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Jibril Abdulmalik, has urged the boy child to appreciate his uniqueness and understand that his originality is key to finding and expressing his purpose.

Abdulmalik gave the charge in a lecture organised by Twenty-One Five Child Foundation (TIFF) to celebrate the 2025 International Day of the Boy Child in Ibadan on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2025 theme of the day is “Building Self-Esteem in Boys: Stand up, Be Heard, Be Seen”.

Abdulmalik, from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and the founder of Asido Foundation, urged boys to always focus on attributes such as building resilience and confidence.

“They should realise and accept that failure is a normal part of life,” he said.

He also enjoined them to avoid drug abuse, which he identified as a grave societal problem.

“The best treatment for drug abuse is prevention because once you get addicted, it will be difficult to stop.

“Avoid peer pressure, focus on yourself, develop yourself, learn your weaknesses and try to overcome them.

“Avoid drug abuse, it can damage your life and destiny entirely forever; learn to respect and learn from other people.

“Work in collaboration with people and learn from them.

“To translate pressure into purpose, start by knowing yourself, realise that you are the original and not the photocopy of any other person,” Abdulmalik said.

Meanwhile, the founder of TIFF, Amb. Tolu Taiwo, observed that there had been a drift of attention from the boy child, resulting in dire visible consequences on society.

“During our visit to the Oyo State Ministry of Education in the course of planning for this event, we were reliably informed that the enrolment of boys into school had dropped in recent years.

“This is worrisome.

“Yet, along the streets and major roads, we see our boys roaming and chasing after flashy vehicles, sleeping under the bridges, doing drugs, and contributing to security concerns in the communities.

“We must look back and find out where society has gotten it wrong and how we have failed and continue to fail our boys. What kind of pressures are we mounting on them?

“This year’s theme, ‘Building Self-Esteem in Boys: Stand Up, Be Heard, Be Seen’, emphasises the importance of nurturing confidence, visibility, and a strong sense of identity in boys,” she said.

Taiwo said the theme encourages society to support boys in developing healthy self-esteem, empowering them to express themselves confidently and recognise their value within their communities.

She emphasised that one of the pressing and alarming challenges confronting young people is the get-rich-quick syndrome.

Taiwo added that the pressure to acquire and display wealth and ostentatious lifestyles at a very young age had led to a surge in vices.

“Such vices as internet fraud, ritual killings, and other forms of crimes.

“We live in a time where boys are bombarded with unrealistic expectations; to appear strong without showing emotion, to succeed without acknowledging struggle, and to chase material things as proof of worth.

“These pressures have created a silent crisis; one where many boys are growing up unsure of who they are, and unsure of who they are allowed to be,” she said.

The child protection advocate advised boys to acknowledge that a good reputation is priceless.

According to her, the true definition of success lies in the number of lives one positively impacts and the kind of legacy and footprints one leaves in the sands of time.

“Today is your day, and we celebrate you, not just for who you are, but for the great men of tomorrow that we know you can become,” Taiwo said.

TIFF Project Lead, Mr Promise Ihezie, had said the foundation, whose focus is on young people, both males and females, celebrated the boy child to showcase the importance of boys in society.

NAN reports that the event’s highlight was the inter-school oratory contest on the topic, “From Pressure to Purpose: Combating the Effects of Societal Pressures and Wealth Exhibition in our Society”.

Ibadan Boys High School, represented by Emmanuel Adenuga, came first, while Government College Ibadan, represented by Oluwadarasinmi Lazarus, came second.

The third position went to Methodist Grammar School, represented by Oluwajuwon Ololade.

The first position went home with a customised laptop, school bag and trophy, while the second received a customised tablet, school bag and trophy.

The third position got a Bluetooth speaker, a customised school bag and a trophy. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NGF backs constitutional role for traditional rulers

NGF backs constitutional role for traditional rulers

Gov. Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Joint Committee of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and National Council of Traditional Rulers (NCTR), has pledged the Forum’s support for the establishment of the council.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Uzodimma addressed journalists following the Forum’s meeting on the proposed bill to establish the NCTR..

He affirmed the NGF’s commitment to ensuring the bill’s passage, which is currently before the National Assembly.

“With the bill now at second reading in the Senate, this meeting offers a timely platform to refine our collective stance,” he said.

He stressed the need for the bill’s provisions to reflect real conditions and practical governance realities across communities.

Uzodimma, who is also the Imo Governor, said the amendment offers an opportunity to embed traditional institutions in the nation’s governance framework.

He noted that including traditional rulers in State and National Security Councils is not merely symbolic but both strategic and long overdue.

“Last year, the NGF held a special meeting with the NCTRN to discuss involving traditional rulers in rural governance and administration,” he recalled.

He added that the ongoing constitutional amendment process presents a chance to recognise and assign defined responsibilities to traditional institutions.

He also revealed that a subcommittee comprising NGF and NCTRN members was formed as a result of that meeting.

The subcommittee developed proposals to strengthen traditional rulers’ constitutional roles and to secure NGF’s support for their inclusion in the amendment.

Uzodimma said the latest meeting featured presentations from the subcommittee, which nearly secured full support from Forum members.

He stated: “Our final report will go to the wider NGF board for consideration and possible adoption.

“If adopted, we will liaise with the National Assembly to ensure inclusion in the constitutional alteration.”

Uzodimma emphasised that the meeting came at a time of rising security challenges and weakening community bonds in some regions.

He said the government is committed to peace and stability, and this demands more than centralised responses.

“Community-driven solutions must be part of the strategy, drawing on the authority and influence of traditional rulers,” he noted.

He reiterated that the proposed amendment gives Nigeria a chance to integrate traditional institutions into formal governance structures.

Uzodimma stated: “Tackling insecurity should start at the grassroots. Traditional leaders are well-placed to warn early, reconcile disputes and support state actions.” (NAN)

In line with Egypt’s national strategy to advance dental healthcare and promote public health, the Ministry of Health and Population has announced the successful training of 13,555 dental interns across all governorates in 2024.

The initiative covered multiple key disciplines, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, conservative dentistry, endodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, and dental technology, as reported by the Middle East News Agency (MENA), a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the ministry, the training programme was launched under the Ministry of Health and Population with the aim of enhancing the scientific and clinical expertise of dental interns.

It was also launched in order to equip the interns with practical skills to navigate the demands of the healthcare sector through a structured and comprehensive programme.

The ministry confirmed that the trained interns – graduates of public and private universities – were deployed across hospitals and health units affiliated with regional health directorates.

In addition to clinical placements, the programme included scientific seminars, the development of a detailed training manual, and mechanisms to ensure the fair distribution of interns across the country.

This initiative supports the readiness of young dentists to enter the workforce and respond effectively to medical challenges.

MENA further reported that no fewer than 9,950 dentists were officially assigned to duty during the same year.

Alongside training and deployment, the ministry extended community outreach services to more than two million citizens, aiming to promote oral hygiene and prevent infections, tooth decay, and gum disease. (TV BRICS/NAN)

2025 Hajj: Our pilgrims will enjoy quality meals, says NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) says it will ensure the contracted catering facilities comply with standards while serving meals to Nigerian pilgrims.

The commission’s Medina Feeding Committee, headed by Alhaji Abdullahi Kabir, said this in a statement issued by its Public Affairs Officer, Malam Ahmad Muazu, in Abuja on Friday.

Kabir said this during an inspection to the seven contracted catering facilities in Madina.

“As more than 17,000 Nigerian pilgrims already arrive in Medina for the 2025 Hajj, NAHCON has implemented a rigorous oversight system to ensure consistent quality in its extensive feeding operation.”

According to him, the committee inspectors examine the quality of all food ingredients, verifying that raw materials meet nutritional standards before the preparation process.

“They scrutinise expiration dates on every packaged item, from spices to preserved goods, enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for expired products.

“Additionally, inspectors verify strict adherence to NAHCON’s mandate for natural ingredients, prohibiting artificial flavour enhancers and preservatives that could compromise the nutritional value or authenticity of traditional Nigerian dishes.

“These recurring inspections ensure that kitchens maintain compliance with NAHCON’s exacting standards while serving thousands of meals twice daily,” Kabir said.

According to him, the commission’s Medina Feeding Committee, conducts regular inspections of the catering facilities, maintaining vigilant supervision as the massive feeding operation unfolds.

“The continuous monitoring of every aspect of the feeding programme demonstrates an institutional commitment that extends beyond mere sustenance to encompass dignity and cultural respect.”

Kabir said that the committee evaluated all the seven contracted kitchens in Medinah.

The kitchens are Africana Home Restaurant, Amjad Alghraa, Al-Andalus, Mawasim Khairat, Na’a Azad, Zowar Muktara, and Kabala Catering.

He said that the criteria for evaluation include sanitation protocols, equipment functionality, and staff performance.

Kabir added that the inspections extended to workforce composition requiring the employment of Nigerian cooks and support staff within each kitchen operation.

According to him, this provision ensures culturally authentic meal preparation while creating employment opportunities for Nigerians during the Hajj season.

During a meeting with food service providers, Madinah Coordinator, Alhaji Abdulkadir Oloyin, addressed concerns regarding packaging standards.

“The use of substandard containers is categorically unacceptable,” Oloyin said.

Oloyin directed the use of uniform packaging designed to preserve food safety while enhancing the dignity of the dining experience.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) says it requires Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to submit reports of their procurement activities on both their websites and that of the bureau.

Dr Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General, BPP said this in a statement by Zira Nagga, Head, Public Relations, on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement followed the release of the newly revised procurement threshold for MDAs by the BPP in Abuja on Thursday

Adedokun said that MDAs were now under an obligation to also submit contracts awarded during the month on their website and the bureaus’.

He said that the data would be made available to the highest approving authorities in the executive, legislative and judiciary arms for their consideration.

According to him, BPP will be working closely with the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU) to drive this policy.

The Director-General said that these revised thresholds placed a higher degree of responsibility on MDAs to be more accountable and transparent in their procurement processes.

Adedokun said that those who flout, abuse or frustrate the implementation of these revised thresholds would be recommended to President Bola Tinubu for administrative sanctions, as it will no longer be business as usual.

“To this end, MDAs are expected to immediately allocate funds for the training of procurement officers and other professionals involved in the procurement value chain.

“This will help them to build their capacities and equip them to implement the 2025 budget based on the new revised thresholds,” he said.

He said that going forward, only BPP-approved individuals, firms, professional associations and centres of excellence would be allowed to conduct training on public procurement.

“Further to the above, MDAs should familiarise themselves with the BPP’s revised Standard Bidding Documents.

“They should draft Conditions of Contract,

“All procurements under the 2025 budget and subsequent budgets are to be executed strictly with these documents following extant regulations on Use of BPP approved Standard Bidding Documents and Conditions of Contract,” he said.

The Director-General said that the bureau was also set to invoke its power under Section 6 to debar contractors who participate in corrupt or fraudulent acts.

He said that the bureau would work with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to ensure that procurement officers follow the revised thresholds and enforce sanctions for delays in implementation.

“In addition, the OSGF shall issue the appropriate Service-Wide Procurement Circular in accordance with standard protocol of circulating information in the Service.

“The circular shall include the modalities to facilitate the implementation of the newly revised thresholds.

“The Presidency urges all MDAs, procurement officers, contractors, and stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the revised thresholds,” he said (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
