Institute revives website, urges digitisation of procurement (Page 12)

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (CIPSMN) has re-unveiled its website as part of efforts to deepen digitisation of procurement processes.

Speaking at the 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the institute in Abuja, the North Central Coordinator of the institute, Abdul Mamman, on Wednesday said this would enhance real-time information sharing among members.

Mamman stressed that organisations and professionals who failed to adapt risked being left behind.

According to him, the reviving of the institute’s website is aimed at ensuring broader participation, timely feedback and access to real-time information for members.

“By adopting a procurement system and a platform to simplify, this actually create an opportunity to save time and quick analysis of large volume of activities that are involved.

“When you are digitalised, you will have a wider coverage within the reach from within and outside the country whereas real time information is shared, heard, and done.

“So, at our general meeting, we are today relaunching our website to ensure that there is wider coverage and participation for every member to be able to have an opportunity to get real time information,” he said.

Mamman said the institute was also preparing its members to meet global standards in procurement and supply chain management through the adoption of emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and data analytics.

He explained that the goal was to add value to procurement by ensuring proper sourcing systems, right skills, relevant credentials and practical competence.

He urged the Federal Government to strengthen procurement governance by inaugurating the National Council of Public Procurement, describing it as a critical policy making organ.

“We are pleading with President Bola Tinubu to inaugurate the National Council of Public Procurement.

” Once inaugurated, the council will oversee procurement activities and provide reports to the President, helping to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.

Also speaking, the President of the institute, Alhaji Sikiru Balogun, said the AGM provided an opportunity to review past activities and set an action plan for 2026.

He said a key projection for 2026 was securing presidential assent to a bill already passed by the National Assembly to amend the institute’s name from Purchasing and Supply Management to Procurement and Supply Management.

“We want to have the president’s assets on our bill, which has been passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“The bill is an amendment to our name. We want to change our name from purchasing and supply management to checking is to procurement and supply management.

“The essence is to meet the global best practices in all over the world,” he said.

In his remarks, the Registrar of the institute, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, said the 2025 AGM was successful, noting increased recognition of procurement as a critical sector of the economy.

Aliyu said the institute was committed to promoting professionalism, ethical standards and best practices in procurement, an area he described as accounting for a significant portion of the national budget.

He called for greater professionalism and ethical standards in the procurement sector to enhance its contribution to national economic development.

According to him, procurement remains a critical but often underappreciated area of the economy.

He said that in spite of ongoing developments across the country, the sector had been undermined by what he described as “mid-career crisis professionals” encroaching into roles for which they were not properly trained.

“It is not ideal and is unethical. Our projection coming year is to make sure that the profession take the appropriate place,” he said.

He said the institute was committed to ensuring that qualified procurement professionals occupied their rightful place in both public and private sectors.

He expressed confidence that strengthening professionalism in procurement would support the administration of President Bola Tinubu in achieving its economic reform agenda.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
