The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has begun distribution of inputs to farmer cooperative societies to accelerate potato production in four local government areas of Plateau.

The benefiting farmer groups drawn from Bokkos, Mangu, Jos South and Barkin-Ladi LGAs each received 12 litres of liquid fertilisers and two knap sack sprayers, respectively.

The NEPC distributed the items to the farmers, on Thursday in Jos, during the third quarter meeting of the State Committee on Export Promotion in Plateau (SCEP).

The NEPC’S North Central Regional Coordinator, Mr Samson Idowu, with some farm inputs to be distributed to Potatoe farmers in Plateau to boost their production, during the third quarter meeting of the State Committee on Export Promotion (SCEP), on Thursday in Jos.

Speaking while presenting the items to the beneficiaries, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Musa Haruna said the gesture was to boost production.

He urged them to ensure effective utilisation of the items as they were expected to play critical roles in upscaling potato production in their respective communities.

The commissioner said the Plateau government under the stewardship of Governor Caleb Mutfwang was committed towards repositioning the agricultural sector to boost its revenue base.

He said the state government had procured more than 200 trucks of fertilisers for distribution to the farmers across the 17 LGAs to facilitate dry season farming.

Haruna reiterated the government commitment to create conducive environment for its economy to thrive and discourage the over dependency of white collar jobs among the youths.

In his remarks, NEPC’s Regional Coordinator, North Central Zone, Mr Samson Idowu said that the gesture was part of measures to help potato farmers navigate the challenges affecting the sector.

Idowu noted that potatoe farmers were being confronted with challenges of accessing seedlings, farm machineries, chemicals for disease control, in addition to high inflation rate.

He said that NEPC would provide more interventions as it gets more funding, to enable Plateau boost potatoe production as its One State One Product (OSOP) for export to promote the non oil sector.

“And as we have more funding opportunities, there are still other areas that we want to intervene such as in seedlings, farm machinery,” he said.

He said the SCEP quarterly meeting was organised for key stakeholders of OSOP campaign, to discuss on how to harness the comparative advantage of of potatoe and products of horticulture.

According to him, there are nine LGAs producing potatoe and has the potentials of cultivating the produce all the year round in the state.

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman, Potato Producers in the state, Mr Isaac Bawah said that potato has high yield potential of about 60 tonnes per hectre, lamenting that farmers were recording between six to seven tonnes per hectre due to difficulties in production.

Bawah said that they need inputs such as fungicides to address diseases associated with potato and also urged government to facilitate mechanised farming to boost their production.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Sarah Kwarpo from Jos South lauded the NEPC for the intervention and assured them that they would put it to good use. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Police Command in Lagos State on Thursday said that the prevalence of substance abuse had made the work of policing more difficult, lamenting that the music industry glamorised drug use.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said this at the 2023 Press Week Lecture/Symposium, organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Lagos Chapel.

Urging stakeholders, especially the elderly ones, to help in the fight against drugs, Hundeyin said, “The music industry is not helping us in anyway. They glamorise drugs. Not all that glitters is gold.”

He said that a lot of super stars were involved in drug abuse.

According to him, behind most crimes in the society, there is substance abuse or drug addictions among youths.

He said the command regularly arrests criminals in the state and 90 per cent of the cases, the criminals blame their actions on drugs.

“Drugs and their attendant problems are things that manifest in the society. We all know that there is a direct connection between drugs and crimes.

“For us in the Lagos State Police Command, we have come to realise that the more there is drug use in the society, the higher the crimes rate is.

“If drugs actually reduce in the society, crimes too will reduce. Ordinarily, people would not go and commit crimes until they use drugs,” he said.

He told the youth that beyond crimes, drug abuse messes up the future of Nigerian youths and their health.

According to him, when musicians have health challenges, most times they will not want to go to hospital but rather invite a nurse to treat them at home because they are  using drugs. “Going to the hospital will expose that and they don’t want people to know.”

On the way forward, the PPRO said that the media and other stakeholders had a strong role to play in portraying the ills and dangers of drugs in the society.

He lamented that elders who should be custodians of morals had been arrested on several occasions selling illicit drugs.

According to him, it is painful when elderly parents come to beg for their children arrested for drugs.

“Encouraging drugs use will not help anyone. Elderly ones should be our mouthpiece. It is bad that elderly people are making these problems worse. We need to expose this.

“Our borders are quite porous, people bring in things, illicit drugs inclusive. The more we make noise about it the better,” he added.

Hundeyin, who noted that the right policies and tighter borders could also help in addressing the menace, urged young ones not to experiment with drugs in order not to cut their lives short.

He urged the students and young Nigerians not to bow or succumb to peer pressure. You should know what is good and what is bad.

He added: “Always stand right even if it means standing alone, in the long run you will be better for it. Drugs are not helping in our society.

“It has made the job of policing more difficult, because more and more youths are going into drugs which translates into cultism, murder, rape and many of them end up in prison. Our young one should stay away.

“Drugs affect crimes, so to help us reduce crimes in the society, we must collectively do all we can to ensure that drug use come down and we should not glamorise it.”

He said that the only way the youth could fulfill their destinies was to stay clear of drugs. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

AfDB  unveils country-by-country report on Africa’s green financing needs

AfDB  unveils country-by-country report on Africa’s green financing needs

By Lucy Ogalue

The African Development Bank(AfDB) Group has unveiled a country-by-country economic reportson Africa’s climate change and green growth financing needs.

The aim of the report is to guide African policymakers in their discussions during the 28th United Nations(UN) Conference on Climate Change (COP 28).

The bank in a statement said the global event would take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from  Nov. 30 to  Dec. 12.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new Country Focus Reports (CFRs) provide analysis and policy recommendations to strengthen countries’ active participation at COP 28.

The theme of the reports is “Mobilising private sector finance for climate and green growth in Africa”.

The report foster policy dialogue on macroeconomic performance and outlook and provide insights on mobilising private sector and natural capital finance to drive the continent’s climate resilience and green growth policies.

Prof Kevin Urama, AfDB’s Chief Economist and Vice President, said the reports would evoke sound, practical and implementable policies to enhance private sector financing for climate change and green growth.

“As countries prepare for COP28, the reports provide each African country with independent, verified analysis and recommendations.

“For evidence-based negotiations during the global conversation on climate finance and green transitions.

“The reports contain several short, medium, and long-term policies to accelerate African countries’ economic growth and build resilience to shocks. “They provide governments and potential investors with up-to-date, accurate data to inform policy and investment decisions,”Urama said

The vice president said climate change had been identified as one of the most pressing existential threats to Africa’s inclusive growth and sustainable development.

According to Urama, this year’s country reports explore opportunities to leverage private sector resources and natural capital to close the climate finance gap.

He said this would support the transition to inclusive, strong, and sustainable green growth.

According to Urama, expanding private sector participation in green growth markets requires several policy interventions, including strengthening the capacity to develop long-term green growth strategies.

He said that this includes the development of appropriate regulations and incentives, supporting project preparation and development, and developing more robust capital markets.

“This will support easy entry and exit for domestic and global investors.

“It will require greater use of blended finance, the use of de-risking facilities at scale, and the development of platforms.

“That allow the private sector to invest in a portfolio of green projects, rather than individual projects, to diversify and manage risk,” Urama said.

The AfDB’s Acting Director of Country Economics, Ferdinand Bakoup, said the Country Focus Reports 2023 built on the African Economic Outlook 2023 which was launched in May.

Bakoup said the report also build on the subsequent Regional Economic Outlooks launched in July.

He said: “the CFRs’ detailed country-level analysis and policy recommendations will impact policy design and future projects and programmes in African countries.

“Through these continental, regional, and country-specific reports, AfDB seeks to reduce the information imbalances that result from generalising about countries across a very diverse continent.

“The document highlights how governments can strengthen macroeconomic performance and outlook and catalyse private sector and natural capital finance to support climate action and green growth initiatives in the country.

“These include green bonds, debt for climate swaps, green banks, blended finance, carbon markets, and several other innovative financing instruments,”he said.

The African Economic Outlook (AEO) 2023 and the Regional Economic Outlooks reports highlight the resilience of several African economies despite a series of compounding shocks in recent years.

The shocks include the COVID-19 pandemic, persistent impact of climate change, global conflicts, financial market volatility, rising debt vulnerabilities and more.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has advised parents to live up to their responsibilities of raising their children well for the good of the society.

The minister made the call in Abuja on Thursday at the inauguration of a document titled: “Parenting for Peace (P4P): Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) Training of Trainers’ (ToT) guide.”

The event is organised by Mercy Corps, a frontline international organisation in over 40 countries, under the project Community Initiative to Promote Peace.

The event is supported by the United States Agency for International Development.

She said that it was the duty of parents to mould the children from the age of six months to ensure they grow to be responsible citizens.

According to him, good parenting will help to reduce insecurity in the society.

Kennedy-Ohanenye pointed out that 80 per cent of children presently having problems are due to lack of good trainings from their parents.

“Do well in training your child in the right way, pampering a child shows you are advocating for him or her to do some certain things, you have to be in control of your child.

“I usually carry out drug test on my children when they were growing, parents should be ashamed of themselves when a child is going the wrong way,” she said.

The minister also advised that parents should be cautious on the kind of behaviour they display before their children, saying, ”children learn very fast from the behaviours of their parents”.

She said that the way a woman lives with her husband at home would determine how the children would grow to live.

Mr David Gatare, Chief of Party, CIPP, said that Mercy Corps was proud to be working in protracted crisis areas to cushion conflict and economic shocks while providing humanitarian assistance as well as build resilient communities.

Garare said that in the past five years, over three million people had been impacted through the organisation’s peace building, governance and conflict resolution initiatives, education, financial inclusion and environmental sustainability.

He said that the organisation was driven by the vision of a Nigeria where all citizens, including young women and men are empowered, engaged, resilient and productive.

“At Mercy Corps, our work is on gender, peace and security; it focuses on addressing and mitigating gender dynamics that perpetuated and exacerbate conflict while including diverse group and members of the society.

“We constructively engage government, CSOs, private sector and community institutions, especially religious and traditional leaders as well as work side by side with grassroot women, men, and youth to promote a safe diverse, inclusive and peaceful communities,” he said.

Mrs Blessing Amadi, the Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, also said that parents should create time for discussions with their children.

According to her, having time with the children, listening and giving them advice form part of good parenting, which parents should imbibe.

She called on parents to apply disciplinary measures in their homes to teach the children how to be responsible and to know the consequences of all actions whether good or bad.

Amadi said that as parents, there is the need to educate the children by getting involved in their assignments and guiding them to know the rudiments of education.

She also said that parents should be concerned with the security of their children at home and in school as well as teach them the dangers of random movements without authorisation.

”The children should also be guided on the responsible use of technology devices,” she added.

Also, Mr Idris Mohammed, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs appreciated all stakeholders for their opinion on gender issues and for creating time to attend the event.

Mohammed said that the presence of the stakeholders had further confirmed their relentless commitment to ensuring the general wellbeing and peaceful co-existence of Nigeria as a country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Strike: Respect court order , FG tells labour

By Ebere Agozie

The Federal Government has called on labour unions to shelve their proposed strike and refrain from actions capable of undermining the subsisting court orders.

It made the call in a letter signed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN and addressed to Falana’s law firm, counsel to the labour unions.

The letter was copied to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chief Of Staff to the President, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General, State Security Services.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Industrial Court had on June 5 restrained NLC and the TUC, from embarking on any industrial action over the removal of fuel subsidy.

The minister argued that the plan by both labour unions would violate the subsisting order of the court if they embark on the indefinite strike from Oct.3.

He told the unions to respect the order of the court and allow room for ongoing negotiations between them and the Federal Government.

“These are undoubtedly issues that have been submitted to the National Industrial Court for adjudication.

“Therefore, the proposed strike action is in clear violation of the pending interim injunctive order granted on June 5 restraining both NLC and TUC from embarking on any industrial action/or strike of any nature, pending the hearing and determination of the pending motion on notice.

“We wish to reiterate that a court order, regardless of the opinion of any party on it, remains binding and enforceable until set aside”.

Fagbemi noted that it is the expectation of the public that the labour unions would lead in obedience and observance of court orders and not in its breach.

“It is, therefore, the earnest expectation of this office that your distinguished law firm will advise the labour unions on the need to protect the integrity of courts and observe the sanctity of court orders.

“Consequently, you are kindly requested to impress upon the organized labour unions to note the fact that their proposed strike action is in gross breach of the subsisting court order, as well as the appropriateness of addressing their grievances/demands within the ambit of the law.

“Hence, the need for them to be more accommodating and show greater appreciation of the effect of the order of the court, by shelving the strike action.

“The foregoing will afford parties more room for further mutual engagements, for a holistic and sustainable resolution of all outstanding issues on this matter in the overall national interest,” he added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abia Industrial Innovation Park, feat with multiple benefits – Adighije

Abia Industrial Innovation Park, feat with multiple benefits – Adighije

By Deji Abdulwahab

Sen. Chris Adighije has described the groundbreaking of Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) initiated by the state government as a double feat with multiple benefits for the state, country and West Africa at large.

Adighije, who said this in a statement in Abuja, said the initiative of Gov. Alex Otti’s administration was a blessing.

According to him, the park will create immense job opportunities for the people, shore up government’s revenue and attract foreign investments.

“To birth an idea of an AIIP is novel, and a double feat with multiple benefits, not only for the state, but for the country, the West African subregion and the Continent at large.

“To start with, the idea is long overdue to help harness the state’s innovative and industrial drives into a systemic corridor that can be monitored and invested into, in a more scientific way.

“The AIIP, as is currently designed and projected, will create immense job opportunities for the people of the state, and for other Nigerians as well, while also shoring up the government’s internally generated revenue (IGR).”

According to him, it will also attract foreign investments from other places within and outside Nigeria, as it would also in turn, create a better export net for products from Aba, and/or, other parts of the state.

“As products from the AIIP travel to other places on the continent, and even outside Africa, the economy of scale resulting from this would further improve Per Capital Income of individuals and households.

“It will allow for increase in taxes cum government income,” Adighije said.

He congratulated the governor and people of the State for recording the monumental achievement.

He stated that since May 29, 2023 when Gov. Otti was sworn in, the issues and discussions of governance in Abia State had taken a positive dimension in the areas of education, Infrastructural development, security, economy and others.

“I join the government and people of Abia to celebrate this onerous feat of positioning our Dear State on the World map.

“For long Abia State has been the darling of commerce and technological innovations that has endeared it to people and places beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“Products from Aba have traveled to Bamali in Mali, Dakar in Senegal, Aswan in Egypt, Ashanti in Ghana, to list a few places in Africa.

“In Europe, Madrid in Spain, London in UK, Oslo in Norway, Heidelberg in Germany, just as Kyoto in Asia’s Japan, Sydney in Australia, among others, all bear testimonies of the ingenuity of people in Abia State.

“Such words as “Aba Made” is a common cliche among Nigerians, whether it is spoken with patriotism or otherwise,” he said. (NAN)

“Drug abuse among Nigerian youths today is a pressing concern that demands our immediate attention.

“We can see the devastating effects today that is rippling through families and communities; the futures of these young generations are being affected.

“It is time for us as parents, families, communities to unite and tackle this problem head on,” he said.

The oba said that the easiest way to tackle the menace was through awareness, advocacy, and talking about it.

He urged students present at the symposium to resist peer pressure into abusing drugs.

“We have to talk to you, the students; you need to understand that you do not have to fall for any peer pressure; because your friend does drugs, does not mean you have to do drugs.

“Also, that you can sing, and you want to be a star does not mean you have to take drugs for you to be able to sing properly.

“You can sing without taking drugs; be a good athlete without taking drugs; you can be anything in life without taking drugs.

“Parents, once again, a whole lot is in our hands; let us all help these kids for the better of this country, “ Elegushi said.
