Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has felicitated with Muslim faithful as they mark the Eid-el-Maulud celebration.

He urged that all the Muslim faithful and other residents of the council should use the occasion to deeply reflect on the role they can play individually and collectively to build a nation they can be proud of.

Maikalangu said: “We must love people no matter our political, religious and tribal differences and we should in no way resort to violence or promotion of anarchy in settling our differences.

“Therefore, there is the need for us to imbibe the true meaning and virtues of sacrifice, patience, tolerance and fellowship in our relationships and dealings with fellow residents and all Nigerians.

“Always embrace dialogue in settling differences and reject attempts by unpatriotic individuals or groups to incite unrest which is always counter-productive.

In a keynote address, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, stated that the coconut seedlings distribution aimed at mitigating the effect of the 2022 flooding.

He added that the event marked a significant step toward the growth and prosperity of the country’s coconut industry.

The minister was represented by Mrs Omolara Oguntuyi, Director, FMAFS, Lagos State office.

“In Nigeria, the coconut sector holds immense potential to drive economic growth, enhance food security and promote sustainability.

“The coconut value chain is among the crops being promoted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

“We envision a future where Nigeria is not only self-sufficient in coconut production but also become a global leader in the coconut industry.

“As we distribute these seedlings today, I encourage our coconut farmers to embrace this opportunity with enthusiasm and determination,” she said.

She commended the efforts of coconut farmers and urged them to push the frontiers of the sector.

“Your unwavering commitment to nurturing these palms, often under challenging circumstances, especially through the flooding period, has contributed to the economic growth and food security of our nation.

“In addition to the seedlings, government is committed to providing the necessary support, training, and provision of resources to help you to maximise your coconut farming potentials.

“Together, we will build a vibrant coconut industry that benefits farmers and enhances the livelihoods of countless Nigerians,” she added.

In his remarks, Mr Oladapo Olakulehin, General Manager, Lagos State Coconut Development Authority, reiterated government’s commitment to growing the coconut sector and improving its value chain.

The Mastercard Foundation, in collaboration with its Impact Partner Organisations (IPOs), has trained 11 young Nigerians on monitoring and evaluation practices to enhance positive growth in the sector.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the IPOs included Preston Associates for International Development (PAID), Cloneshouse, ITAD, and Global Integrity.

Dr Nkemdilim Ene, Chief Executive Officer, Preston Associates for International Development (PAID), said this at the graduation ceremony for the Youth Impact Associates Cohort 1, in Abuja.

She explained that the foundation and its implementing partners saw the need to build the capacities of young people in the country hence the training.

She said that using a multidimensional approach to the various aspects of monitoring and evaluation, the effects of various policies on Nigerians would be known.

“The young graduates have been clear as to where they are going; they are focused on what the immediate future holds, and the alumni platform, which will be launched today, is another platform to make their contributions more cohesively noticed,” she said.

She added that the beneficiaries had in the last twelve months been prepared on how to engage with Nigeria and the continent on how to look at evidence differently.

According to her, Nigerians are always talking about policies, but interpreting those policies into evidence has continued to be a significant struggle in this country.

“We want to see those beautifully crafted policies become real strategies that will unfold in the communities that the government is serving,” she said.

Similarly, the Country Director, Mastercard Foundation Nigeria, Rosy Fynn, said the event wasn’t just a graduation but a testament to the power of young minds to shaping the future.

“Through dedication, learning, and collaboration, these young men and women have embraced the challenge of improving monitoring, evaluation, and learning practices in Nigeria and together with other young impact associates in different countries across Africa.

“They have harnessed fresh knowledge and transformed it into actionable solutions, lighting the way for a brighter continent,” she said.

In the same vein, Mr Oludotun Babayemi, Chief Executive Officer, Cloneshouse, said that the project focused on providing technical knowledge on monitoring and evaluation for young people between the ages of 25 and 35.

He said that the project aimed at creating opportunities to access decent jobs for young people and set them up for leadership positions in the field of evaluation.

“The field of monitoring and evaluation is relatively new and growing in Nigeria, therefore, what it means is that there is need for more people to be able to drive change within the evaluation community,” he said.

He lauded the new legal framework for monitoring and evaluation in the country, adding that it would help strengthen policies at several levels.

“These young people will be the drivers of Nigeria’s evaluation and monitoring policy because once we can monitor, then we can evaluate the programmes, policies, and projects better,” he added.

One of the graduates, Mr Emeka Nwankwo, appreciated the IPOs for the privilege, adding that the exercise had increased his confidence in the monitoring and evaluation space.

“We understand the need in Africa’s evaluation space, and we want to carry this knowledge into society to promote indigenous ways of monitoring and evaluation,” Nwankwo said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Alabi has charged the troops under its formations to always exhibit discipline while on duty.

Alabi gave the task on Tuesday at the 4 Brigade Command Headquarters in Benin during the tour of formations under the division.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new GOC was deployed to the division on Aug. 23, as he took over from Maj.-Gen. Valentine Okoro.

While addressing the troops, the senior military officer said discipline was the only virtues that distinguished them from other members of the society.

“Let’s continue to be disciplined and law abiding. We must work in line with the laid down instructions and guidelines.

“Without discipline, you don’t have any business in soldier; discipline is what distinguishes us from other members of the society.

“We must continue to remain dedicated to our duties and be law abiding,” he charged.

The GOC, however, assured that the military authorities took their welfare very seriously and would ensure they do whatever would enhance their welfare and training, among others.

He said that the visit would afford him an opportunity to familiarise himself with the operational activities in the brigade and seek for the cooperation of the troops in the reform agenda of the Chief of Army Staff.

“I have been well briefed and I want to start by commending all of you for the good job you are doing; the support you are giving to other agencies to ensure peace, security and stability in the brigade.

“As it is our responsibility, soldiers, that is our job; it is to ensure territorial integrity.

“I want to further remind you of what it is to be a soldier. You have dedicated the period of your service to contribute your impact to national security and you must be ready to continue to do that.

“In line with the mind’s philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, which we are all very much aware of, that he wants to transform the Nigerian Army into a well trained and very motivated force.

“The Chief of Army Staff is very much committed and interested in ensuring effective administration of personnel of the Army.

“I assure you that we, the commanders, would always ensure whatever that will improve the administration in the Nigerian Army and it will be well protected,” Alabi said.

Release Nnamdi Kanu to end sit-at-home, boost S/East development, group urges FG

Release Nnamdi Kanu to end sit-at-home, boost S/East development, group urges FG

The Rescue Nigeria Global Network (RNGN) has urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to boost development and end criminality in the South-East.

Dr Michael Chukwujekwu, Global Coordinator, RNGN, said the Federal Government should consider releasing Kanu to stop criminal groups from using the detention as an excuse to perpetuate crime and insecurity in the zone.

Chukwujekwu said in a statement made available to NAN from United Kingdom, that it had become pertinent for the Federal Government to urgently intervene for the benefit of the nation’s economy.

He expressed displeasure over the inability of government to release the IPOB leader, saying that many lives and property have been lost due to his continued detention.

“Pathetically, the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has ended, yet Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not released not withstanding the court’s ruling.

“If the executive made her claims and passed the responsibility of releasing Nnamdi Kanu to the Judiciary and judiciary had played their role by granting judgement for his release, should the Legislators at the NASS also need to play their own role too?

“Nigeria is at the point where rule of law should not to be ignored; the country needs to proactively release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Inaction could seem enabling the sit-at-home, obviously, a sabotage to the business, education, industry, economy and development of the South-East and Nigeria.

“Could the way forward for Nigerian, South-East (Ndigbo) be to tackle this main issue about sit-at-home that leads to destruction of life and properties, as well as business, and end it?

“In doing the needful, could we be avoiding the chance for another person rising even if Simon Ekpa is silenced,” Chukwujekwu said.

He said that allowing insecurity to fester anywhere in the country would not augur well with the country’s economy.

Chukwujekwu added that the clamour for arrest and extradition of Simon Ekpa, for instigating the sit-at-home may not end the trouble the country and people in South-East found themselves in.

“The question is, if Simon Ekpo is arrested or extradited will it solve the problem?

“Will the killings and destruction of properties in the South-East due to sit-at-home stop or will another person assume such leadership of Simon Ekpa?

“What actually is the main prayer of the perpetrators of the sit-at-home that is leading to the destruction of lives and properties in the South-East of Nigeria?

“There is an urgent need for Nigeria and Ndigbo to look into the cause of the sit-at-home critically and deal with it,” he asked. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Senate confirms Cardoso as CBN Governor, 4 deputies also get the nod

The Senate confirmed the appointment of Dr Olayemi Cardoso as the Governor of the CBN on Tuesday.

It also confirmed the nomination of Mrs Emem Usoro, Mr Muhammad Dattijo, Mr Philip Ikeazor and Dr Bala Bello as the bank’s deputy governors.

Their confirmation followed the consideration and approval of a motion moved by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti Central).

Before their confirmation, the Senate suspended its orders to facilitate the admittance of the nominees into the chamber.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Abdullahi Gumel led the nominees into the chamber.

Thereafter, the CBN governor and the deputies took turns to highlight their career profiles and professional experiences.

Cardoso said for 12 years, between 2010 and 2022 he had the privilege of serving as the chairman of Citi Bank where: “I dedicated myself to enhancing both the financial and non-financial operations of the institution.’’

He told the Senate that the issue of exchange rate of the Naira to other currencies was worrisome.

“For the type of economy that we want, we need to have an exchange rate that is stable and we must apply short and medium term measures to achieve this,’’ he said.

Cardoso added that CBN’s new management team would evolve rules that were open and transparent and comprehensible by all players in the finance business.

“We cannot expect serious foreign investors, portfolio investors who have an impact on the market to do so if we do not have a transparent system that everybody understands and can rely on,’’ he said.

On the issue of inflation and costs of goods, Cardoso said the CBN management would adopt evidence-based monetary policies.

“There is the need to significantly revamp the infrastructure at the central bank with respect to data and to ensure that our data gathering capacity is significantly enhanced.

“This is necessary so that we can make decisions based on stellar data. This is crucial in measuring inflation,’’ he stressed.

He added that reliable studies showed that in the past 10 years to 15 years, at least 50 per cent of inflation resulted from money supply and deficit financing.

“This is a big problem; at least it certainly has been over a period of time and it is something we have to face frontally,’’ he said.

Cardoso also told the Senate that the CBN would ensure that the issue of deficit financing ceased to be a national problem.

Earlier, President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio (APC-Akwa Ibom North-West) said the Senate reconvened from its annual recess to expeditiously consider and confirm the nominees.

He said the expeditious confirmation also resulted from of the emergency resignation of the former CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

Akpabio urged the Senate Committees on Finance and Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to regularly conduct thorough oversight of the CBN. (NAN)

The Governor of Osun, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, on Tuesday in Ile-Ife joined in advising Nigerians that early detection of cancer saves life.

Adeleke gave the advice while declaring open a three-day symposium commemorating the 10th anniversary of the African Research Group for Oncology (ARGO).

The event was held at the Clinical Skills Lecture Theatre of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC).

Adeleke, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr Adekunle Akindele, said early detection would lead to early treatment.

”This will help us in saving the several lives being lost to cancer,” he said.

The governor then commended the conveners of ARGO for their initiative.

He said the two conveners —- Prof. Olusegun Alatise and Prof. Peter Kingham —- were worthy of emulation for their thoughtfulness and sacrifice for humanity.

While speaking on the theme: “Changing the Cancer Care Landscape in Nigeria: the Role of Innovation, Collaboration and Implementation”.

Also, the symposium’s keynote speaker, Prof Isaac Adewale, noted that cancer should not be seen as a death sentence but something that can be managed and treated, if detected early.

Adewole frowned at the medical tourism Nigerians regularly embarked upon, pointing out that cancer can be treated and managed in Nigeria and by Nigerians.

“However, I believe there is the need for more awareness, and I charge the media and all present to sensitise the people more on this,” he said.

Speaking also, Prof. Alatise, appreciated his ARGO team and other colleagues in other departments for deeming it fit to grace the occasion.

Alatise disclosed that ARGO is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) and approved Colorectal Cancer Consortium.

He said he has hopes of changing the face of cancer in Nigeria and ensure that every cancer patient get the same treatment as the cancer patients abroad

Alatise added that surgery can be performed anywhere once the surgeon was well trained and equipped.

“The overall pursuit of ARGO is to improve cancer care in Africa.

“Our training activities are geared towards building the capacity of healthcare providers for improved service delivery in terms of cancer patients’ management as well as building the capacity of the same set of professionals for conducting cutting-edge cancer research.

“The overall goal of these endeavours is to bridge the gap between the quality of cancer care in Africa and that of the developed nations,” he said.

Those who attended the event included the Chief Medical Director, OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, the Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof Simeon Bamire.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, on Tuesday received a copy of the draft Programme for Country Partnership (PCP) document, which forms the basis for the 2023-2027 cooperation agreement.

Bagudu received the document during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) team, which is also a party to the agreement, in Abuja.

He said that the constitution of the committee was sequel to the request of the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2021, for UNIDO to upscale its country programme 2018-2022 in its next programme cycle starting from 2023 to 2027.

“The assignment of the committee was to align the proposed Nigeria PCP (2023-2027) priority areas with the National Development Plan (NDP) 2021-2025, and identify sources of funding for the PCP during the programme period.

“The committee presented its report in August 2022, the proposed total budget for PCP Nigeria 2023-2027 of 174.585 million dollars  and how it is to be sourced.

“Government counterpart ccontribution is 14.3 per cent using the structure for financing of NDP 2021 – 2025: 24.965 million dollars and UNIDO/Partner’s contributions 85.7 per cent 149.619 million dollars,” Bagudu said.

He expressed satisfaction with the document due to its gender inclusiveness.

“Women are strong factors and they are very enterprising,” he said.

ECOWAS donates $77,942 grant to train FCT, Bauchi State farmers in poultry, fishery

By Bukola Adewumi

ECOWAS has given $77,942 as training grant to 150 farmers in Bauchi State and the FCT to boost food security in Nigeria.

The beneficiaries are farmers of the Community Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria (COMAFAS).

Mrs Massandje Toure-Litse, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture made this known at the opening of a poultry training workshop for beneficiaries in Orozo, Abuja on Tuesday.

Toure-Litse said the grant would increase young peoples’ capacity to engage in agriculture value chains and food production.

She added that it would go toward the training of 150 youth in poultry and fisheries, adding that the two sub-sectors were the main driving force behind the sub-region’s economy and development.

ECOWAS has designed quality training modules and arranged for the training of 3,032 young people (30 per cent women and 70 per cent men), she said.

Toure-Litse said agricultural productivity and competitiveness in West Africa had the tendency to impact positively on the sub-region’s food security, economic development, and livelihoods.

According to her, the ECOWAS Agriculture Policy remains the guiding framework for the 15 members of the bloc as it prioritises agricultural productivity and competitiveness.

The programme seeks to enhance the capacity of youth and women farmers and promote their access to resources and markets and their involvement in agribusiness, she said.

She added that there was the need for urgent intervention in gender participation in agriculture and youth employment, food chains, crops, forestry, livestock and fisheries.

“Products from crops, livestock and fisheries are the second largest when we talk about intra-community trade and interestingly, among these, livestock is the largest item.

“It is anticipated that by 2030, at least 30 per cent of young people in the sub-region will be employed in the agriculture sector.

“This will amount to a 75 per cent reduction in youth under-employment in rural areas,’’ she said.

In his remarks, Dr Austine Maduka, Founder/President of COMAFAS, said in spite of the expansion of poultry industry in Nigeria, it could only cater to 30 per cent of the needs of Nigerians.

Maduka said the training aimed to educate young farmers on how best to start and manage production.

He said the partnership with ECOWAS would strengthen the move to ensure availability of meat, other foods and impact relevant skills for sustainable strategies to reduce poverty.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports 75 out of the 150 beneficiaries would be trained on poultry farming in the FCT, while the remaining 75 would be trained on fish farming in Bauchi.

The FCT beneficiaries were given 50 birds each, bags of poultry feeds and drugs as start-up capital. (NAN)
