The Consul General of the U.S. Consulate in Lagos, Will Stevens, says African solutions are needed to address global problems of which include climate change, food insecurity, poor leadership, among others.

He made this known at the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) Reunion Conference organised by the consulate for fellows who recently completed their  programmes at various prestigious institutions in the U.S..

Stevens charged the fellows to work together to solve global problems, noting that the MWF as well as other exchange programmes focused on building connections that would last.

According to him, the mission’s hope is that fellows bring back research, business and media ties back into Nigeria so it leads to investment and partnership.

“This is an incredible time to be part of the U.S. relationship with the continent and with Nigeria in particular because I think about the second half of the 21st century as the African century.

“This relationship right now is so strong, but it’s built on relationships between people, partnerships between our companies, universities, and civil society actors.

“But we need to start working together even more, because the problems that we face are global in nature,” he said.

Stevens said that the fellows were the network and  the future, noting that he had incredible faith in them.

“I have incredible faith in the dynamism that Nigeria produces in all sectors and I am yet to see the Nigerian faced with a problem that they don’t think they can overcome.’’

He noted that Nigeria had an average age of 19, and explained that youths were engaged by connecting and helping them to relate with their peers in the U.S. while identifying areas they could work together.

Speaking with newsmen, Dr Rabi Sufi, one of the fellows noted that the programme was very valuable to her, considering the work she does in the health sector.

Sufi, who was posted to Wayne State University in Michigan, said she gained both academic and leadership skills, and how to build advocacy.

“I did a lot of community awareness programmes in the community and I was able to get more knowledge on how to deal with leaders in such communities while increasing the impact of my work,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MWF, the flagship programme of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was established in 2014 to empower young African leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa between the ages of 25 and 35.

Fifty seven young Nigerians participated in the 2023 programme for six weeks at some of America’s top educational institutions,  focusing on tracks including business, civic engagement, or public management. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

TETFund pledges support to reduce unemployment

The Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund),  Sonny Echono, has pledged support for measures that will improve employment of graduates in the county.

Echono made the pledge at an Implementation Support Workshop for National Employability Benchmarking Programme in Nigerian universities in Abuja on Wednesday.

He stressed the importance of implementing the recommendations contained in a report submitted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to ultimately reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country.

“The report indicates that the aggregate average score of Nigerian benchmark institutions across the five dimensions of employability is 2.3 out of 4.0 which is just above the average of all institutions benchmarked globally (2.2).

“The report which also covers the assessment of the institutions’ Digital Learning Strategy shows that surveyed universities lagged behind global best practices in application of digital learning strategies, access to large multidisciplinary databases and digital course-reserves as well as the level of faculty digital skills.

“This obviously require deliberate action on the part of all stakeholders to address our peculiar challenges,” he added.

Echono said that Nigeria being a developing economy is faced with the challenges of high unemployment, particularly youth unemployment which is at an all-time high in the country.

He added that an increasing number of young Nigerian graduates from tertiary education institutions are being released into the labour market with a continuously shrinking absorptive capacity.

“The structure of the economy which is largely import dependent has further limited the ability of the country to generate commensurable jobs due to low level of industrialisation, thereby aggravating the unemployment situation in Nigeria.

“Thus, aligning our intervention activities to meet our changing needs, and strengthening our education delivery towards fostering an entrepreneurship culture are some of the best ways for unleashing the enormous youth potential,” he said.

He added that the fund is also working to address unemployment as well as other societal problems, thereby growing the economy.

He said that strengthening entrepreneurship education and training are crucial to achieving this.

“As an intervention agency for tertiary education in Nigeria, TETFund is deliberately refocusing its intervention activities to support learning outcomes and employability of Nigerian tertiary education graduates.

” I am pleased to report that the Strategic and Operational Plan for refocusing TETFund entrepreneurship intervention for employability and innovation was approved by the Federal Ministry of Education in March 2023.

“Consequently, the requirements and guidelines for accessing entrepreneurship development intervention of the Fund were revised in line with the approved Plan.

“In addition, the Fund is in the process of establishing entrepreneurship and innovation hubs in our beneficiary institutions across the six geo-political zones of the country, to link them with industry.

“This is with a view to enhance entrepreneurship development, innovation and employability in line with contemporary global best practices,” he said.

He, therefore, said that the interventions would help promote the transformation of beneficiary institutions into catalysts for knowledge creation and organising the translation of knowledge into usable products and services for addressing societal problems. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

“This position placed him at the heart of governance and gave him firsthand experience in the complexities of public administration.

“His contributions during this period undoubtedly contributed to the successes achieved by the Lagos State government,” she said.

“Hakeem Muri -Okunola’s appointment as the Principal Confidential Secretary to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to public service,” Abubakre said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Schools support 109 learners with N70m scholarships

Schools support 109 learners with N70m scholarships

The Africa Community School (ACS) and the Africa International College (AIC), in a bid to giving back to the society have impacted no fewer than 109 learners with scholarships gulping about N70 million.

The Executive Secretary of the schools, Mrs  Caroline Yakubu disclosed this at a news conference to herald their 20th Anniversary Celebration in Abuja on Wednesday.

Yakubu said the schools also collaborated with some public schools in the locality by supporting them with materials to help learners.

”The items include furniture, books and other learning materials. Besides, the folks and indigenes that reside around our locations have been employed within their appropriate skills.

“More importantly, God has helped us to positively impact the educational pursuit of many learners that have passed through our schools.

“In Africa Community School (ACS), over 109 students have benefited from our internal scholarship and support schemes totaling nearly N70 million and still counting.

“At the other end, in Africa International College (AIC), we have reached out to over 92 students totaling about N90 million. For the two schools, God has enabled us to support the training of more than 200 learners with over N160 million spent on them.

“These are verifiable persons and figures. These were students who, through no fault of theirs, lost one or both parents, while they were with us or children from proven economically disadvantaged families,” she said.

Yakubu  said that the school had made it a policy that once a child is admitted into the schools and he/she loses any or both parents, that child must not be withdrawn on the account of inability to pay school fees.

The executive secretary noted that the funds were all internally generated with some support from a few former parents and individuals.

She, therefore, called for support from the government to assist private educational sector to thrive in the business of bringing values out of Nigerian students through creation of an enabling environment.

She said that many times, the private sector provides social amenities to grow their businesses and still contends with multiple taxes from the government.

“The place and role of private schools in our educational system cannot be over emphasised. During the military era, they tried to nationalise many private schools, including mission schools. How did it end?

“Unquantifiable losses were the experiences and we are still paying heavily for the errors.

”In the FCT alone, there are over 2,400 private schools and about 830 public schools. Again, imagine with me, an FCT where there are no privately run schools. What would be the implications all round?,” she added.

In the same vein, the Chairman of the School Board, Mr Nda Yakubu, pleaded with the government to look into the multiplicity of taxes that are not regulated.

He said that if not checked , the cost would be transferred to parents through hike in fees.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

IDDRR: FEMA sensitises Abuja residents on disaster risk reduction

IDDRR: FEMA sensitises Abuja residents on disaster risk reduction

By Philip Yatai
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun a weeklong sensitisation of residents on disaster risk reduction across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Terrirory (FCT).
Mrs Florence Wenegieme, the Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, FEMA, launched the sensitisation on Wednesday at the Palace of the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa.
Wenegieme explained that the exercise was part of activities to commemorate the 2023 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) with the theme “Fighting Inequalities for a Resilient Future for All.”
She said that the IDDRR is annually commemorated on Oct. 13 to sensitise residents as the first respondents to disaster situations on how to reduce risk in communities.
She said that the goal is for the people to know how to prevent, reduce or mitigate disasters.
She added that “if you are aware of an imminent disaster, you will be prepared to prevent it, and if you can’t prevent it, you reduce the impact or mitigate the outcome.
“This is part of a strategy to reduce loss of lives and properties to disasters to the barest minimum.”
She identified some of the disasters as flooding, fire outbreaks, building collapse and other forms of disasters.
The director added that some of the disasters are human-induced and as such, preventable.
She stressed the need for residents to pay attention to the advice of FEMA and other disaster management experts on ways to prevent human-induced  disasters.
She said that the theme of the 2023 IDDRR focuses on inclusion to ensure that no one is left behind – women, youths, children, persons with disabilities, the aged, the blind and every other human being.
“That is why our sensitisation is a bottom up approach from the community level, to ensure that community members are aware of disasters and how to support and help one another when it occurs.
“That is also why our participants include traditional leaders from the ward level, women, the youths, town criers, volunteers, local divers, disaster marshals, religious and traditional leaders.”
From L-R: Council Secretary, Abaji Area Council, Mr Abdulrahman Ndagi and the Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, FEMA, Mrs Florence Wenegieme during sensitisation on disaster risk reduction in Abaji on Wednesday
The director said that other activities within the week would include a seminar with relevant stakeholders, a road show, media engagement and a news conference.
Responding, the Ona of Abaji thanked FEMA, the Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike and the management of FCT Administration for the support to the traditional council and local communities.
Yunus, however, appealed to FEMA to establish offices at the area councils to bring emergency services closer to the people and increase response time.
He assured FEMA of the traditional council’s support in sensitising the people on disaster risk reduction.
Earlier at the Abaji Council Secretariat, the Council Chairman, Mr Abubakar Abdullahi, pledged to set up a Local Emergency Management Committee to respond to emergencies at community level.
Abdullahi, who was represented by the Council Secretary, Mr Abdulrahman Ndagi, promised to work with FEMA to keep residents informed about disasters and how to prevent, reduce or mitigate them. (NAN)

Ijaw, Bayelsa elders back Diri’s re-election bid

Ijaw, Bayelsa elders back Diri’s re-election bid

By Shedrack Frank

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa’s second term bid has received the backing of prominent Ijaw leaders of thought, including the Bayelsa Elders Council among others.

The leaders spoke at an interactive session organised by a socio-political group, Friends of Douye Diri (FSDD), at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall in Yenagoa on Wednesday.

The Pioneer President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Joshua Fumudoh, said Diri is a product of the Ijaw struggle who had seen it all and translated his passion for the Ijaw nation into development and transformation of the only homogeneous Ijaw state.

Fumudoh asserted that there is a clear difference between those who fought the Ijaw cause and others whose ambition is for personal gains.

He stressed that the state now witnesses politics without bitterness because the true Ijaw man accommodates all irrespective of political differences.

Wife of former River governor,  Ethel Diete-Spiff, commended the governor for breaking boundaries in executing landmark projects, particularly the Nembe-Brass road and urged him not to relent.

Also, a member of the Bayelsa Creation/Founding Fathers Forum, Prof. Ayebaemi Spiff, who commended the governor for his impactful developmental strides also poured her motherly blessings on Diri.

She prayed that the Nembe-Brass road is completed in due time so she could drive on it before she dies.

Chairman of the occasion and leader of the Bayelsa Elders Council, retired Rear Adm. Gboribiogha John-Jonah, described the Nov. 11 date of the Bayelsa governorship election as a symbolic day for victory.

John-Jonah, who is the immediate past deputy of the state, traced the date, 11:11, back to 1918 when the peace accord between Germany and the Allied Forces was signed, and called it the armistice day.

He said with the coming together of the founding fathers of Bayelsa and past leaders of the INC in support of Diri’s second term bid, victory was assured.

He noted that as elders and leaders of the Ijaw nation, they would not fold their arms and allow cultists, deceivers and pretenders to take over the state, adding that Bayelsa had made tremendous progress under Diri and was not ready to go back to the dark days.

John-Jonah, who described the governor as his brother and friend, said Diri is the agent of change that has taken the state out of darkness.

In his response, Gov. Diri thanked the leaders, elders and founding fathers of the Ijaw nation for honouring him with their endorsement, stating that they had been his pillar of support since he assumed office and that without them; he would not have achieved much.

Diri said he had always enjoyed the company of the Bayelsa Elders Council and the Founding Fathers Forum, attending their meetings from time to time to seek counsel and stressed that this had helped shape his decision to do more for the people.

He said, “This group (FSDD), to my mind, has the fathers, mothers, leaders and elders of the Ijaw nation. If you look at the array of personalities here, most of them had served the Ijaw nation in the old Rivers and were even in the battle for the creation of Rivers. So they have seen it all.

“The symbolic statements by those who have spoken, you will agree with me that they did not just speak from their human perspective. So, I like to thank you my fathers, mothers, elders and leaders.

“Without you, we could not have recorded the little we have achieved within these three years and still counting. You have been a pillar of support in several ways,” he said.

The governor agreed with the speakers that the state could not change a winning team as all the gains of his administration would be neglected by the opposition due to their anti-people agenda.

He averred that having traversed the length and breadth of Ijawland, his primary objective is to write his name in gold before leaving the office after eight years.

In his welcome address, President of the Friends of Sen. Douye Diri, Bodi Arerebo, said the mission of the group is to promote the goals of the Diri administration and that of the Ijaw nation.

Arerebo said having carried out an overall assessment of the administration, he discovered that relative peace, political tolerance, passionate development and non-existence of political thuggery and violence are his hallmark and that these necessitated the group’s endorsement of the governor for a second term.
