President Bola Tinubu has started a meeting with an investor in India as part of his official visit to the country ahead of the G20 Summit on Saturday and Sunday.

A statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Tuesday in Abuja, said the president entered the meeting immediately on arrival after a 15 hours long intercontinental journey.

The president met with Mr Prakash Hinduja, Chairman and CEO of the Hinduja Group of Companies, a conglomerate with a total asset portfolio exceeding 100 billion U.S. Dollars.

The president received the industrialist within 90 minutes of the his arrival in India.

Accompanied by Nigeria’s Ministers of Finance, Foreign Affairs, Industry, Trade and Investment, Tinubu said he was in India with a focus to better the Nigeria’s economic fortunes.

He said that Nigeria intends to attract investments with lucrative opportunities, jobs for its citizens and new revenue opportunities for the federal and sub-national governments.

“We are here for business. I am here to personally assure our friends and investors that there is no bottleneck that I will not break. Nigeria will become one of the most conducive places on earth to make good profits and create lasting jobs.

‘’With my support, there is nothing standing in your way of enjoying the unrivaled opportunities presented by our massive market and the ingenious, and hardworking nature of the Nigerian people. We are open for business,” the president said.

The Hinduja Group chairman told the president that he was a living witness to his landmark effort as Governor of Lagos in turning a coastal erosion and water encroachment crisis into a massive free trade zone where industry now thrives.

This, he said, was partially responsible for his excitement to partner with the Nigeria’s new president to create a win-win prosperity for Nigeria’s talented population.

“We believe in you as a leader who has done this before. You know what the challenges are. You know how to fix them.

”We are going to make investments into the billions of dollars under your leadership, because we see you are already addressing the systemic problems. I am ready now to sign an MoU and to begin execution.

”You tell me who to liaise with, and we will get to work immediately, particularly with respect to bus and automobile manufacturing in Nigeria, amongst other areas.

”I have had paperwork stalled in Nigerian bureaucracy for over one year, especially in FCT.

”But I knew that you would be purpose driven in this endeavour and God will help you to turn Nigeria’s rich promise into rich reality for all of its citizens,” Hinduja said.

The president directed thus: “Ministers of Trade and Finance, the two of you will follow this up immediately, and you will draw up the terms to the satisfaction of both parties.

”If there are any issues at all that require my intervention, they must be brought to my attention immediately.”

After the president assigned the task of concluding the agreement to the two ministers in collaboration with Hinduja Group Executives, who were present in the room.

The president concluded that his task of making Nigeria great could only be achieved through teamwork and not in isolation.

He added that when his investors are happy, Nigerians would rejoice by partaking in an inclusive economy where hard work is rewarded and excellence becomes the reputation of the nation.(NAN)

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra on Tuesday launched free antenatal care and delivery for expectant mothers for the remaining period of his administration.

Soludo described the gesture as part of his government’s palliative measures to cushion the effect of hardship on Anambra people.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the launch took place at the Nnobi General Hospital in Idemili South Local Government Area.

The governor said that his administration was committed to ensuring unhindered access to health care, especially at the grassroots level.

“We have been renovating and equipping our hospitals.

“Over 300 health workers have been recruited and I recently approved the recruitment of additional 500 to work at the primary healthcare centres.

“We want to make medical services available to everyone and we have adopted telemedicine to ensure unlimited access to healthcare in the state.

“Under my watch as the governor, we will be implementing free antenatal care and delivery for pregnant women.

“But I employ you to give birth to the number of children you can take care of.

“Our goal is to prioritise the health of pregnant women and their unborn babies.

“I urge our health workers to give quality attention to our pregnant women at no cost,” Soludo said.

He further said that other interventions had been mapped out for civil servants, pensioners and households to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.

“From now to December, all workers and pensioners will be paid N12,000 monthly, in addition to their salaries and pensions.

“Pensioners, who retired from 2018 to 2022, were not paid their gratuities but since we came in, we have cleared 2018 and 2019 gratuities.

“We started paying those who retired in 2020 and we will continue to pay.

“Part of the interventions is the distribution of bags of rice to 300,000 households and it will commence by the end of the month,” the governor said.

Also, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, said the free services would be implemented at all the government health facilities in the state.

He urged pregnant women in the state to take advantage of the governor’s kind gesture but cautioned health workers against the abuse of the opportunity.

“The governor’s good intention for pregnant woman should not be taken for granted.

“Any health worker found demanding money or diverting materials and drugs would face serious sanctions.

“We appeal to residents to help us monitor the exercise, if they discover any irregularity they should as a matter of urgency report to us so that we can address it,” Obidike said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Paul Ngwu, a Consultant Urologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon at the hospital, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Tuesday.
He said that Bipolar Enucleation is a new technique of removing very big prostates completely without opening up the patient.

According to him, older methods of achieving the same result include Holmium and Thulium Laser enucleation.

“We have done over 20 so far since March and we still have more to do this year.
“We have also started Laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer.
“I tell people that prostate cancer is curable provided it is started at the early stage.”
Apart from offering healthcare for urological conditions in both males and females, he said that the hospital is also involved in Laser fragmentation of kidney, bladder and ureteric stones.
“We also introduced a technology for breaking large kidney stone into pieces and flush it out without cutting the patient’s body.
“We have been doing that for both small and big kidney stones since 2021,” said Ngwu, who is a member of World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Delta State Governor, Mr Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on corps members posted to their various places of primary assignment to help the state governments in providing quality educational services in their host communities.

Oborevwori, represented by the Chief of Staff (COS), Mr Johnson Erijo, said this on Tuesday, at the closing ceremony of the orientation of Batch B Stream II members, at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Issele Uku.

“Delta State will utilise your services in all spheres of life, and particularly,  in the area of teaching our young ones in our various schools.

“You are, therefore, to ensure that positive values and knowledge are imparted to these children that God has placed you to serve,” he said.

He urged the corps members to see their service year as a mark of honour and call to service in recognition of their worth to Nigeria.

“I enjoin you, therefore, to use this opportunity to make new friends, break new grounds and gain a better understanding of Nigeria and the people of Delta State.

“You are encouraged to devote some of your time to self-development and reflection on your plans for post-service life.

“Please, avoid needless travels as the risks involved are many,” he said.

He said that the government was working to lay a solid foundation, so that the future, where they aspire to be leaders, would hold genuine hopes and bright prospects for a greater nation.

“Our country is currently passing through some economic challenges, but our great nation will come out of it, stronger, better and more prosperous.

“Please be confident of a fairer economic, social and political stability in that future where you will surely be its leaders,” he said.

The State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Olusegun Alao, urged the corps members to see themselves as leaders of today rather than leaders of tomorrow.

Alao said that he was confident that the trainings they acquired during the orientation course had prepared them.

“I congratulate, you my dear corps members, for successfully completing the 21 days orientation course.

“I commend you all for your courage and commitment which led to the success recorded.

“I, therefore, enjoin you to continue with the Post-Camp SAED Training wherever you are posted to.

“The government and people of Delta State will appreciate your contributions to the development of Delta in the areas of education, infrastructure and healthcare delivery during your one year service.

“I assure you that your contributions will be printed in gold in the history of the State,” the coordinator said.

He said it had been the tradition of the state government to continue to recognise hard work among corps members deployed to Delta State.

“I humbly renew our request for continued infrastructural development of this camp in order to conveniently accommodate and cater for the welfare of corps members that will be deployed to the state,” Alao said.(NAN)(nannews.com.ng)

Military wives sensitise members on mental health, self-care

Military wives sensitise members on mental health, self-care

The President, Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has stressed the need for wives of military personnel to pay adequate attention to their mental health and wellbeing.

Mrs Musa said this on Tuesday at a seminar with the theme, “Self Care and Work/Life Balance” organised by the National Defence College Officers Wives Association (NDCOWA) as part of activities lined up for the Graduation of NDC Course 31 participants.

She said the wives of officers were often left alone at the home front dealing with so much stress since their husbands were most times not around.

She said that sensitising military wives through such programme would help them to be able to cope with whatever stress or challenge they might face as primary caregivers at home.

“It is very important that we organise such programme for us to be able to educate the children, people around us and then to be able to deal with the total wellbeing of everyone around them,” she said.

The Coordinator of NDCOWA, Mrs Rhoda Olotu, said the programme would help to bring about an intentional attitudinal change towards the wholesomeness of being an officer’s wife and living right.

Olotu said the need to live up to expectations in terms of meeting extended family needs and many more reasons had compelled the modern day woman to go out in search of full time jobs that were mostly demanding while still holding on to their homes.

According to her, it will be stating the obvious that these take tolls on the women, not only physically but mentally.

“As military wives, who, most of the times have spouses that are engaged in service to our fatherland, it is even more demanding, if not chaotic in trying to find the balance.

“Self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health whilst that of work life balance is described as a division of one’s time and focus between working and family or leisure activities.

“Having looked at these two definitions, and from experience critically weighing the possibility of achieving them as officers’ wives seem to a layman like me almost impossible,” she said.

One of the Resource Persons, Dr Isioma Chukwuka-Nwodo, a Psychiatrist, said that mental health could be likened to a car with four wheels that was essential for all to enjoy a productive life.

Chukwuka-Nwodo said that women were vulnerable to a number of mental health problems because of several biological and socioeconomic factors they are exposed to.

She added that wives of military officers were even more stressed by the nature of their husband’s jobs.

According to her, adoptive coping responses like self-care and seeking support and help when necessary can help turn this stress into an opportunity for positive emotions, resilience and wellbeing. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

UN releases US$125m for humanitarian operations in 7 African countries, 7 others

UN Relief Chief Martin Griffiths, on Tuesday released US$125 million from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to assist underfunded humanitarian operations in 14 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East.

The 7 African countries listed are Burkina Faso US$9 million; Mali US$8 million; Central African Republic US$6.5 million; Mozambique US$6.5 million; Uganda US$6 million; Cameroon US$6 million; and Malawi US$4 million.

Afghanistan is to get US$20 million; Yemen US$20 million; Myanmar, US$9 million; Haiti US$8 million; Venezuela US$8 million; and Bangladesh US$8 million and Occupied Palestinian Territories US$6 million.

The UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA) which Griffiths leads, reported that in 2023, global funding requirements have surpassed US$55 billion to support 250 million people affected by conflict, climate change, disease outbreaks, and other crises.

Faced with these record needs, less than 30 per cent of the target funding goal has been received.

“It is a cruel reality that in many humanitarian operations, aid agencies are scraping along with very little funding right at a time when people’s needs compel them to scale up,” Emergency Relief Coordinator, Griffiths, said.

“Thanks to the generosity of a vast range of donors, we can count on CERF to fill some of the gaps. Lives are saved as a result.

“But we need individual donors to step up as well – this is a fund by all and for all.’’

The recent injection brings the emergency fund’s total support to more than US$270 million this year.

This is the largest amount ever allocated to the highest number of countries, reflecting skyrocketing needs and the fact that regular donor funding is not keeping pace. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker, House of Representatives says it will equip the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) with stronger statutory powers, through legislative amendments of its Act.

The speaker said the Act was geared towards enabling NEITI to carry out its task of ensuring transparency and accountability in the extractive industry

Abbas gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja at the unveiling of NEITI 2021 Solid Minerals Industry Report with its theme as “Impact built on blocking leakages to grow revenue’’.

Abbas, represented by Dr Awaji-Inombeth Abiante, Chairman, House Committee on Urban Development and National Planning assured of the support of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) in all NEITI’s undertakings geared towards sector’s development.

“The House of Representatives will also play its part in ensuring the implementation of NEITI’s Report, in line with the relevant provisions of NEITI Act.

“The House will ensure that the solid minerals report is laid on the floor of the House and debated extensively to ensure the implementation of the recommendations made therein.

“Working together, we will ensure the realisation of government’s desire for diversification of the economy for the attainment of alternative source(s) of revenue and clean energy,’’ he said.

Abbas said Nigeria’s search for transparency and accountability in the governance of her abundant natural resources was directly linked to 2003 when the country voluntarily signed up to the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

He said Nigeria’s signing up to the EITI led to the establishment of NEITI in 2004 as part of the overall government economic and institutional reforms under the then National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS).

According to him, NEITI’s annual presentation of reports which gives basic information and data about the extractive industry generally, is in line with global best practice and in conformity with the provisions of NEITI Act, 2007.

“I must place on record my commendation of the leadership of NEITI, headed by Dr Orji Ogbonanya Orji for sustaining the practice of annual reporting of the activities transacted within the industry from time to time.

“This year’s report which is the 12th edition since the inception of NEITI is coming at a time when the government is in search for workable solutions which will enhance the economic fortunes of Nigeria and increase her revenue generation for multi-sectoral development.

“The Dr Orji’s leadership is also worthy of commendation for its role in leading the fight for reforms in the extractive industry. Your quest for the full implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and monitoring of same is worthy of commendation.

“The present leadership of NEITI has raised the bar in the fight for transparency and accountability in the extractive industry.

“Working together, we will ensure that the PIA is fully implemented to create the needed boom in the Downstream and Upstream sectors to bring about more foreign investments, improved local production and increased revenue for our nation,” he said.

Also speaking, Sen. Osita Ngwu, Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals said the report would help in its oversight function adding that the national assembly would work assiduously to enact enabling laws with global standard.

Mr Gaza Gbefi, House Committee Chairman on Solid Minerals urged NEITI to also consider releasing a report to determine actual amount of solid minerals extracted and exported.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over the years NEITI has published 12 cycles of independent reports in the solid minerals covering years 2007 to 2021 which disclosed total revenue of N845.14 billion to the federal government.

The 2021 reports recorded total revenue generation of N193.59 billion from the solid minerals sector by the Federal Government. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
