Abuja, Aug. 21, 2023 (NAN) The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mr Nyesom Wike says he will demolish all illegal buildings and structures in the FCT as part of efforts to restore the Abuja Master Plan.

Wike stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday to announce the short, medium, and long term plans to overhaul the FCT and reposition it among the best cities in the world.

As the new sheriff in town, he said: “It is not going to be business as usual. Those distorting Abuja Master Plan: if you build where you are not supposed to, the building will go down.

“If you build on a green area, sorry, it will go down. Those who were allocated land and refused to develop them, we will revoke such lands and re-allocate them to those who are ready to develop them.

“Those who don’t pay ground rent, we will not notify them to do so, but I will not be tired of signing revocation notices.

“Uncompleted buildings that have become a safe haven for criminals will be reclaimed by the government and put them to good use.”

The minister added that the government would no longer tolerate the indiscriminate operation of markets and motor parks by the roadside.

He said that people selling goods and wares under the umbrella by roadside, illegal motor parks and bus stops would no longer be tolerated, adding that they constitute part of the security challenge in the FCT.

“If you have a brother, sister, or uncle involved in any of these, please tell him that the time is up. The goal is to sanitise Abuja and make it safe for everyone,” he said.

He also said that efforts would be made to strengthen waste management and restore all traffic lights to keep the city clean.

He added that motorcycle and tricycle operators would be banned from the city and put an end to open grazing within the capital city.

“We will consult with stakeholders, the natives, and herdsmen to address some of these problems, including open grazing.

“We will provide alternatives to reduce the suffering of the people, particularly those without private vehicles.

“We will bring back mass transit to improve access to public transportation, and therefore, the person in charge of transportation must keep his record clean,” he said.

He said that emphasis would be placed on infrastructural development, taking one project at a time to restore the city to its glory.

The minister said that development would also be extended to the six Area Councils as part of strategies to decongest the city.

He also said that all revenue leakages would be blocked to be able to mobilise the needed resources for infrastructural development in the FCT.

On security, Wike said that he would work with all security agencies in the FCT and provide them with necessary tools and logistics to rid the city of all criminals.

According to him, FCT is supposed to be the safest city in the country, adding however, that the city is no longer safe.

“We will provide security agencies with necessary tools and logistics and after that, we will not want to hear any excuses. What we want to see is results.”

Wike also promised to consider the natives in political appointments with a view to carry everyone along.

He solicited the support of all stakeholders, including the media to restore the confidence of the people on President Bola Tinubu-led administration drive to give people hope. (NAN)

North Central leaders laud Tinubu over appointments

North Central leaders laud Tinubu over appointments

By Dorathy Aninge

Leaders of the North Central geopolitical zone, have commended President Bola Tinubu, over what they described as “display of spirit of fairness” in the appointment of ministers.

The leaders, led by Bishop Alli John Alli, under the aegis of the League of Middle Belt Bishops, also appealed to Tinubu to appoint High Chief Moses Ayom as Ambassador-Designate to China.

In a letter to the Presidency on Monday, Bishop Alli, who noted that Ayom was from Benue State, called on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, to support the call for Avom’s appointment as Ambassador to China.

In the letter, also copied to the North Central zone governors, the leaders described Ayom as having an edge over other nominees that might be considered for the position because he was the most qualified.

The leaders expressed confidence in the ability of Ayom, adding that given the opportunity, the former presidential aspirant, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who stepped down for Tinubu during the 2023 primary election, would deliver on the mandate.

They stressed that the business relationship that Ayom had built over the years with the Chinese government and his business connections in China, would be deployed to ensure a strong mutual relationship with Asia for the overall development of Nigeria.

According to the leaders, who advised the president to consider competent hands for ambassadorial positions, Avom will not disappoint him, and indeed Nigerians, if appointed as the Chinese envoy.

The group further argued that apart from Ayom’s experience and business contacts in China; his contribution and sacrifices for the APC, as well as patriotism to the country, were worthy of note.

In the letter titled: “Before it is too late”, the leaders said; “We are here once again as an umbrella body of Middle Belt Bishops, to commend the President for his unbiased appointments so far.

“However, recall that, High Chief Moses Ayom was the leader of agitation for Middle Belt presidency, but later dropped his ambition and went all out to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is now our president.

“In his uncommon generosity, he also donated his multi-billion naira property on Ahmadu Bello way, popularly known as “Heritage Africa” to President Tinubu, which was used, and is still being used after the campaigns. This is a huge sacrifice that will only come from a dedicated, committed and patriotic citizen.

“Ayom has shown undiluted love and patriotism for this country and for the fact that there has been a very solid relationship and understanding that had existed between the Middle Belt and Southwest right from the days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Chief Ayom has also invested his time, skills and resources in campaigning for Tinubu and Alia, and by the grace of God, both are now president and governor respectively.

Therefore, they said, Ayom should not be forgotten, but should be nominated as Nigerian Ambassador designate to China, based on his connection with the Chinese and the whole of Asia, or be appointed to head a federal agency or parastatal.

“We believe this will be the minimum the trio of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sen. George Akume and Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, will do for Chief Moses as a mark of reward for his immeasurable contributions. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

N/Delta Chieftain applauds Tinubu for returning NDDC to presidency

N/Delta Chieftain applauds Tinubu for returning NDDC to presidency

By Nathan Nwakamma

A Niger Delta Chieftain, Mr Nature Dumale, on Sunday hailed the decision of President Bola Tinubu to return the supervision of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) back to the Presidency.

Dumale, who is the National Secretary of the First Phase Ex-agitator, gave the commendation on behalf of ex-agitators in a statement issued in Yenagoa.

“It is heart-warming to hear that the NDDC will henceforth report directly to the President like the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

“This development is like an answered prayer. I had in the past led a campaign for the commission to be directly supervised by the President positive impact, ” he said.

Dumale, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) Strategic Communication Committee (SCC) said, “Tinubu has, by this singular act, demonstrated his genuine intention to turn around the fortunes of the NDDC and by extension, the Niger Delta region.”

He said that the the Niger Delta had suffered lack of development over the years because greedy individuals were allowed to convert many interventions of the Federal Government for the region, into their personal gains.

Dumale said, “We, in Niger Delta region want to use this opportunity to appreciate Mr. President, for the wisdom in returning the NDDC to the Presidency.

“We believe that this will speed up the development of the region, and stem the culture of turning the Commission into a cash cow.

“For us, it is a sign that the President has good intentions for the Niger Delta region for summoning the political will to move the interventionist agency back to the Presidency. This means that he wants proper supervision of the NDDC.

“As ex-agitators, we can boldly say that the Niger Delta has been suffering because of mismanagement. This move will engender accountability, transparency and the much touted development of the Niger Delta, would become a reality.

“This is one step Mr. President has taken to give us hope as leaders in the region. We believe that the NDDC under the supervision of the Presidency would facilitate meaningful development.

“The only time we experienced some development was when NDDC was under the direct supervision of the Presidency. As soon as it was moved to the Ministry of Niger Delta, it became a cash cow, for the Niger Delta Cartel, whose only agenda, is to keep the Niger Delta underdeveloped”.

Dumale said that they discovered that apart from the NDDC and the PAP, there is a Niger Delta Recovery Plan (NDRP), which mandates the ministries of petroleum, environment and Niger Delta affairs, to work in synergy in articulating the development of the region.

“We live in an environment where a lot is taken away on a daily basis by the Federal Government, yet there is little to show for it.

“The condition of Ogoni-Onne-Eleme Road, which is part of the East-West road, comes to mind. The road has remained a death trap making it impossible for free movement of goods.

“We are standing behind President Tinubu and we await, with great enthusiasm and renewed vigour, the speedy development of our homeland” he stated.

Dumale warned that the ex-agitators were empowered with education and strategies to hold their leaders accountable and would no longer tolerate mismanagement of their commonwealth.

Dumale called on President Tinubu to compel the NDDC to make public, its forensic audit report, insisting that persons responsible for diverting the resources of the commission must be held accountable. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The traditional ruler of Ikate Kingdom in Lagos State, Oba Saheed Elegushi, has praised the Lagos State Government and other state governors who accorded recognition to the traditional festival celebration, Isese Day.

Elegushi,  during the celebration of the Day in his palace on Sunday, said the recognition would promote inclusion and equality.

“The recognition is  long due, as traditional worshipers are part of the society and they belong to the same community as other faiths.

“It is only appropriate they get their own holiday as a mark of respect to their beliefs as it is with Christianity and Islam.

“I am happy that after years of making the calls to the government, the date is now on the calendar and recognized by the Lagos state government and some other governors in the South-West,” Elegushi said.

The traditional ruler also appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that the date becomes a national holiday.

According to him, believers who are not of the two known faiths, also contribute to the peace and progress of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isese Day, a day set aside to recognise and celebrate traditional religion worship  is celebrated annually on Aug. 20.

Osun and Ogun state governments have joined Lagos state to declare Monday as public holiday for Isese Festival. (NAN)

Suspend plans for military intervention in Niger, ex-lawmaker advises ECOWAS

Suspend plans for military intervention in Niger, ex-lawmaker advises ECOWAS

A former member of the House of Representatives, Robinson Uwak, on Sunday, called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and its chairman, President Bola Tinubu to suspend the planned invasion of Niger Republic.

Uwak, in a statement in Abuja, said there was need to sustain the diplomatic channels already opened with the junta led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani and to agree on timelines for the return to democratic government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ECOWAS troops, in a meeting in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday, had pledged their readiness to join the standby force set up to invade the French-speaking country over refusal to reverse the coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum from office.

Reacting, the ex-lawmaker commended former Head of State and the Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar for making himself available to engage Niger’s military rulers and to explore the channels of dialogue despite being turned back during his first visit.

Uwak said Nigeria, which is facing its own security challenges in various domestic fronts, cannot afford another international military conflict close by its borders.

“Let Mr President suspend any talk of military action and sustain the dialogue option as this would yield long term benefits for regional peace and stability within the ECOWAS sub-region.

“The president should take a deep look at the impact of any war with our neighbouring country, the post-traumatic disorders, the severance of cross-border filial relations, the destruction and the injuries that may probably not heal.

“Let us avoid this war by all means,” Uwak said.

He prayed for the return of peace not only in Nigeria but the entire West African sub-region.

NAN reports that West African military chiefs held a second day of talks in Ghana on Friday, preparing for a possible armed intervention in Niger after a coup there ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

NAN reports that ECOWAS has agreed to activate a “standby force” as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger after generals toppled and detained Bazoum last month.

ECOWAS defence chiefs were meeting in the Ghanaian capital Accra to fine tune details of the potential military operation to restore Bazoum if ongoing negotiations with coup leaders fail.

“Let no one be in doubt that if everything else fails the valiant forces of West Africa, both the military and the civilian components, are ready to answer to the call of duty,” Abdel-Fatau Musah, an ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs and security, told the meeting on Thursday.

“Meanwhile, we are still giving diplomacy a chance and the ball is in the court of the junta.”(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Chief Daboikiabo Warmate, has filed a suit against, the Acting National Chairman of the party, Amb. Umar Damagum over alleged negligence to party constitution.

Warmate, who is also the leader of the Concerned PDP League (CPDPL), also dragged the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

The suit came in as an Originating Summons, Motion on Notice and Affidavit of Urgency marked: FCT/HC/GAR/CU/417/2023, FCT/HC/GAR/M/1068/2023 and RN 12936423 .

Warmate alleged that, the acting chairman, NWC and NEC negligently and flagrantly disrespected, disregarded and jettisoned section 31 subsection 4 of the PDP 2017 constitution as amended.

He said the section states that; “the NEC shall meet at least once in every quarter at the instance of the National Chairman or at the request of two-third of its membership, who shall notify the Chairman at least seven days prior to the meeting; and an emergency meeting may be summoned by the National Chairman having regard to all the circumstances of the agenda.”

He alleged that since the 97th NEC meeting held in Sept. 8, 2022, no such meeting has taken place again.

Warmate said, based on the Gregorian calendar three (3) months makes one quarter and there are 12 months, making four quarters in a year.

He therefore, sought for an order restraining 1st to 3rd defendants i.e the acting chairman, the NWC and the NEC from carrying out any further activities of the party.

He also sought an order for a NEC meeting within seven days to elect or appoint, fill or to ratify the position of the Acting capacity of the National Chairman to a substantive National Chairman and National Secretary and other party officials whose positions are vacant.

The PDP chieftain further sought an order of court directing the 1st to 3rd defendants to pay five million naira only as cost of action and various expenses incurred in the course of the case.

The suit is yet to be assigned to a judge. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
