Ogun Govt. to deliver 2,500 affordable housing units for low-income earners (Page 140)

Ogun State Government has announced the provision of 2,500 affordable housing units for low-income earners in the state.

The Commissioner for Housing, Jamiu Omoniyi, made this known at a news briefing on Monday in Abeokuta.

According to Omoniyi, the 2,500 housing units which would be executed in a segmented manner would be scattered round the state.

He added that the project will jointly be executed by his ministry, the Ogun State Housing Corporation and the Ogun State Property Investment Corporation (OPIC) to ensure quick delivery.

He assured that 579 units would be delivered in the second quarter of the year, just as 5000 plots of land would be allocated to civil servants in the state, to be paid for by access to mortgage payments.

Speaking on the ministry’s performance, Omoniyi noted that housing delivery in the state has gone beyond the provision of shelter to embrace dignity, functionality, sustainability, urban renewal and inclusive economic growth.

He said that 2025 ended on a strong note with the successful delivery of 30 units of duplexes at the Ibara GRA Cluster 1 Extension and an additional 100 duplexes at the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate.

According to him, the high level of interest from residents within the state, Nigerians in the diaspora, and other stakeholders, has reinforced government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable and quality housing across the state.

“Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, the housing sector, including the State Ministry of Housing and the Ogun State Housing Corporation has witnessed a remarkable transformation.

“Today, housing delivery in our dear Gateway State transcends the provision of shelter; it is about dignity, functionality, sustainability, urban renewal, and inclusive economic growth.

“Through coherent policies, disciplined execution, and strategic partnerships, the ministry has delivered developments that meet international standards while staying responsive to local realities, contributing meaningfully to job creation, wealth generation, and the overall GDP of the state,” he said.

Omoniyi noted that the ministry and the corporations under it are strategically positioned to scale up delivery in multiple fronts.

He listed some key projects for 2026 to include the construction of an International Conference Centre (GIA) in Iperu, a modern 2,500-seat banquet hall and events centre.

Others are the Appeal Court Headquarters and residences, Ibara GRA Phase II with 50 duplexes, as well as Commissioners’, Appointees’ and Assembly Quarters.

While acknowledging challenges, the commissioner dismissed what he described as unfounded criticism and misinformation directed at the housing ministry in 2025, stressing that it remains focused on results and tangible delivery.

He added that 2026 is another opportunity to deepen impact, expand access to quality housing and consolidate public trust.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the ministry to delivering sustainable, affordable and people-centred housing while positioning Ogun as a benchmark for housing and urban development in Nigeria and beyond. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
