Nigerian businessmen and women have urged the government of Pakistan to entrench the ease of doing business to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports  that the Nigerian delegation had a meeting the sidelines of the ongoing 2nd edition of the Engineering and Healthcare Show (EHCS) holding in Lahore.

The Nigerian delegates said this at a meeting with the Special Assistant (SA) to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Mr Malik Ghulam, when he met with the  businessmen and the Nigerian community in Pakistan.

NAN also reports that, EHCS was organised by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan.

NAN reports that during the meeting some of the businessmen urged Pakistan to create a platform where they can make payments with a relative ease, adding that the protocol of business transaction was difficult.

Other speakers said the prices of pharmaceuticals products were high and urged the government to subsidise the rates of the pharmaceutical products.

Some Nigerian delegates at the 2nd edition of the Engineering and Healthcare Show (EHCS) holding in Lahore.

Mr Ibrahim Musa, the Managing Director, IBM Investment and the Leader of the Nigerian delegation to EHCS event said: ”When the government addresses these challenges, the outcome of both countries’ achievements would be commendable.”

He added that the Nigerian pharmaceutical businessmen mostly dealt with pharmaceuticals products from China and India.

Musa said: ”Jf the government will see to the price reduction of the pharmaceutical products we will patronise Pakistani products.

“We have a huge take-over, our people mainly deal with Indians and China and we believe that Pakistan is known for quality products and that is why we want to shift our market from India and China to Pakistan.

“But, our basic problem is price challenges and some are saying that the government of India and China used to assist the manufactures by subsidising their prices.

“So, we need Pakistani government to do the needful to assist business people to beat the prices in order to penetrate the Nigerian market for all parties to benefit immensely.’’

Musa also sought the support of the government of Pakistan to collaborate in setting up joint pharmaceutical factories in Nigeria to boost both countries’ existing bilateral relations.

Responding, the SA to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Mr Ghalum, assured the Nigerian delegation that TDAP would look into their concerns as it was the purpose of the expo.

“The purpose of this expo and exhibition is for business people to have first-hand interactions with manufacturers and to see the quality of Pakistani products.

“As regards to payment issue, the whole point of the event is also to identify some of these challenges that our business people are facing.

“It is also aimed at finding lasting solutions to these problems to make the ease of doing business for our Nigeria partners smooth,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

BVAS: U.S.-based don urges elimination of human factor

By Cecilia OIogunagba

U.S.-based Nigerian historian and Professor of Africana Studies, Apollos Nwauwa, has commended the Federal Government for the introduction of electronic voting machines, Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), for real-time transmission of polling results.

Nwauwa, who is the Chairman, Nigerians Diaspora Movement (NDM),  told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in New York that when deployed as intended, the BVAS machines were supposed to check human manipulations.

The official, however, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do more than introduction of the BVAS to proper usage in the future elections.

“We need to find ways to eliminate the human factor, the botching of results by returning and collation officers.

“We should find a way to depend more on these electronic gadgets than these returning officers who, as humans, may be induced to alter or manipulate numbers,’’ he said.

In addition, he advised that INEC should be restructured to check the powers of the chairman, saying how independent is our INEC?

“In our current structure, the INEC chairman has broad powers. As an individual, if ever he becomes compromised, we will never get a free and fair election.

“I would rather recommend that we change our electoral laws to have three INEC co-chairs instead of one consisting of chairmen/women of the three major political parties.

“Under this structure, it will become extremely difficult to successfully induce any of the chairs to compromise an election result since each will protect their parties’ interest resulting in no compromises and no manipulations.

“I wish our lawmakers can take this into consideration because this sole INEC chairman, with unrestrained broad powers, is not doing our country any good,’’ the don said.

According to him, various reports received from the country and from international observers regarding the recently concluded Nigerian Presidential election are quite somber.

Nwauwa, a director of African Studies at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, U.S., said election observers from across the world, including Nigerian Diaspora observers, report the glaring lack of transparency by INEC.

“Visual and audio evidence abound of voters intimidations and disenfranchisement as well as ballot box stuffing and snatching.

“Worse were reports of frozen electronic machines and inability of election officials to upload polling unit results as soon as polls closed; then reports of the manipulations of numbers at the collation centres.

He, however, advised the aggrieved presidential candidates to use all legal means to correct the anomaly.

“If this election imbroglio is allowed to go unchallenged, we worry that it might become the ‘new normal’ in our national live and politics.

“I would strongly plead with the Nigerian Judiciary to be ready to take up the challenge and dispense justice dispassionately. The whole world will be watching.

“The judiciary should not be compromised in any form because they are the last hope for ordinary Nigerians, especially the youths, who were so mobilised and participated in the political process than ever before,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Police Chaplains Electoral Observation Mission in Nigeria, and eight Domestic Observers that monitored Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections have described the poll as a sign of the country’s political maturity.

The mission, which is the arm of the International Police Chaplain Sustainable Development and Law Enforcement (IPCSL) Inc., USA, said this while presenting their preliminary report on Wednesday in Abuja.

Other groups are the Grassroots Empowerment Initiative for Positive Change and Development, Voters Awareness Initiative, Society for the Protection of Human Rights and African Civil Society Forum.

They also include Africa Youths International Development Foundation, Pan African Leadership League, Centre for Strategic Conflicts Management, and Youth and Public Safety Awareness Initiative, monitored the election across the country.

Presenting the preliminary report on the election, the Head of IPCSL Mission, Col. Johaness Makouvia, described the exercise as peaceful.

Makouvia said the process conformed with the international standard, adding that the discreet presence of the security forces in most of the polling centers allowed for the peaceful conduct of the voting process.

According to him, electoral law stipulates that voting is secret and that each polling station has at least one voting booth, saying the mission observed compliance with this provision in the polling stations visited.

He added that it helped to guarantee the secrecy of the vote, adding that voting in the polling stations observed, was well attended in the morning, but the pace slowed in the afternoon.

“Overall turnout was orderly and calm, and voters cast their ballots peacefully without major incidents.

“The mission found that, in general, voting procedures were followed by polling station officials.

“An average of four candidate delegates were present at each polling station.

“The majority of delegates were from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Labour Party (LP).

“The IPCSL found that candidate delegates were able to freely exercise their mission in the polling stations observed.

“This is a sign of political maturity that contributed to the normal functioning of the polling stations”, the group said.

The National Commandant, IPSCL in Nigeria, Blessing Akinlosotu, said that IPCSL deployed 178 observers he Election Day and visited 2,297 polling stations throughout the country.

Akinlosotu said that 66 per cent of polling stations opened on time at 8:30 am, while 34 per cent opened late due to late installation of equipment. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Election results: Coalition cautions  against unrest

By Patricia Amogu

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations known as the Global Network for Sustainable Development has expressed worry over the current situation in the country while urging Nigerians to remain calm.

The organisation therefore warned individuals, groups or political parties against provocative utterances capable of inciting society to violence

The National Co-ordinator of the group, Amb. Phil Roberts, gave the advice at a news conference  on Tuesday in Abuja.

“We are here in solidarity with the people of our dear Nation in such a historic moment as this, as a coalition of Civil Society Organisation’s, we represent the overall interests of the society.

“We are critical stakeholders in Democracy generally, and in the conduct of elections in particular, the most fundamental feature of democracy is free, credible and fair elections.

“We, therefore, express constructive views and concerns of our people in line with democratic tenets, and in compliance with all applicable provisions for the expression of civil and political opinions,” he said.

According to him, any deviations or departure from these vital elements renders the whole electoral process an exercise in futility.

“To speak out against electoral malpractices and rigging, should not be taken as public incitement to violence.

“As civil society organisations, we monitored the elections and from what we saw it is obvious that those inciting people to violence are those who  hired armed thugs to intimidate and harass citizens, making it difficult, if not impossible for them to freely exercise their franchise.

‘As watchdogs from the youth fronts, we want to use this medium to urge all politicians, political parties and their stakeholders to be mindful of the way they speak as the polity is already heated up.

”We, therefore, take the statement by one Mr. Dele Alake , Special Advicer, Media and Communication, All Progressive Congress , Presidential Campaign Council, for the apprehension of the cleric, Dr Paul Enenche, the Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, and others as a direct affront on democracy and freedom of speech in this country.

“As a free citizen of this country, and a major stakeholder in society, Dr Paul Enenche has the freedom to express his opinions in matters of national importance.”

Dr Salihu Dantata, Director of Security, Arewa Youths for Peace and Security, said that everyone had rights to speak and should not be stopped from expressing their views.

“Our fathers of Faith who have been speaking the truth should not be threatened , I see no reason why somebody should call for his arrest.

Pastor Love Sheyin, speaking on behalf of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)noted that strategic solutions should be brought forward to solve the issues revolving around the elections to dispel any form of violence among the youths.

They called on all political parties to also be careful in their choice of words in such a time as this because as patriots of this country we believe in  Nigeria. Thus we don’t have any other place to call home(NAN)(www.nannews.com)

By Angela Atabo
The Albino Foundation Africa (TAF Africa) has appealed  to the Independent National Electoral Commission( INEC) to fulfil its promise to the community of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by adequately deploying assistive tools in the March 11 elections.
Founder ,Chief Executive Officer, TAF Africa  Jake Epelle, made the call on Tuesday in the Post Election statement on the participation of PWDs in the presidential and national assembly elections.
Epelle said that the call was imperative to address the lapses noted in the participation of PWDs in the Feb. 25 elections .
He said that the deployment would help the confidence of the disability community in the electoral process which was marred by the unsatisfactory delivery of the elections.
He said that TAF Africa in the bid to achieve increased participation of PWDs in elections as well as establishing  if the  election is free ,fair and credible established the TAF Africa PWD Election Hub.
“TAF Africa deployed 700 observers and launched its Election Hub for analysis, review  and assessment of key issues capable of undermining the active participation of PWDs in the elections.
“INEC  was expected to provide 21,165 magnifying glasses at 16,071 Polling units for persons with albinism and minor visual impairment.
“INEC was also supposed to provide 6,167 posters at 5,085 PUs for those with hearing impairment, and 8,117 braille ballot guides at 5,957 PUs for the visually impaired.
“PWDs are supposed to enjoy priority voting ,which is their legal rights as contained in Section 54,sub section 1 and 2 of the electoral act.
“Unfortunately, these expectations were not totally met and it successfully frustrated the participation of PWDs in the elections.
Epelle said that the process was flawed by violence ,lateness of poling officials and the communication gap by INEC .
He said that for instance ,in the FCT ,Gwarinpa ward, Karon-Majigi disable community polling unit ,PWDs were not given priority voting which discouraged their participation.
“Kubwa village ,Kofar Sarki and Deidei primary school in Kubwa ward, Bwari Area Council are expected to have at least six and 13 registered visually impaired persons.
“As such at  least one braile ballot guide should be provided at these Polling units ,but on the contrary, large font posters for the deaf were the only assistive devices made available.
“Similarly, persons with albinism registered at Games village, Garki,Saburi and Gwagwa wards ,all in the Abuja Municipal Area Council were not provided with magnifying glasses. “
Epelle said TAF Africa called on INEC to provide details on how assistive tools were deployed to various polling units bearing in mind the various clusters of disabilities and their peculiar needs.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
