Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has congratulated the winner of the 2023 presidential election, Sen. Bola Tinubu.

Osinbajo extended his felicitations in a message he sent to the President-elect on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier on Wednesday declared the presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu, winner of the Feb. 25 presidential election.

INEC has also presented the Certificates of Return to Tinubu, and his Vice President elect, Kashim Shettima.

“I warmly congratulate the flagbearer of our great party, the APC, Tinubu, on his victory at the 2023 Presidential Elections, and his declaration as President-Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I also congratulate Sen. Shettima on his declaration as Vice President-Elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In your previous years of public service, you have demonstrated a consistent fidelity to progressive and welfarist ideals, and an ability to build bridges across several divides.

“These attributes are needed especially at this time, to reach out to disaffected sections of our society and to meet the aspirational expectations of our young people who have shown such a strong desire to impact our democratic process in a positive way.

“I trust that they will not allow whatever setbacks they may have experienced to truncate their strong desire to determine the future course of our national journey.

“Through thick and thin, we must all remain focused on the objective of birthing the Nigeria of our dreams.

“I pray that Almighty God will help you to fulfil the progressive mandate of our Party, as well as your various plans to improve the security, welfare and happiness of all Nigerians,” he said.

Earlier,  while presiding over the weekly Federal Executive Council, the vice president led the ministers to congratulate Tinubu, his wife,  Sen. Oluremi Tinubu and the Vice President-Elect, Shettima.

He directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to formally convey the felicitations of the council.

Gender and Election Watch (GEW) observation group has said that the conduct of the Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly election was largely peaceful though there were pockets of violence.
Mufuliat Fijabi, the Chief Executive Officer, GEW Room of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) stated this, on Wednesday, during a post-election briefing in Abuja.
Fijabi, who said that the group deployed 400 accredited observers for the polls, said the participation of women as voters, poll officials and candidates were highly commendable.
According to her, the elections witnessed the resilience of many Nigerians, especially women who participated as voters, poll officials and candidates.
She, however, expressed worry over the percentage of women candidates in the polls.
“Women are resilient and committed to a truly democratic process although the turnout of women need to continue to improve,” she said.

(From Left): Mr Saka Azimazi, Human Rights Expert; Mufuliat Fijabi, CEO of GEW Room of NWTF and Mr Rabiu Sabo, Technical Expert in GEW during a post-election press briefing of GEW on Presidential and National Assembly elections on Wednesday in Abuja.

Fijabi, who acknowledged the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asked for stronger efforts to consolidate on the gains made so far “and to continue to guarantee Nigerians that their votes truly count.”
“However, the challenges associated with the delays experienced in the opening of polls, pockets of disruption and the slow and untimely upload of results on the IREV remain strong concerns for Nigeria’s democracy,” she said.
While commending technological innovations in elections, she said thorough testing was a necessity before affirmation to avoid irregularities that could mar an entire electoral process.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the GEW Room, is an initiative of NWTF, an organisation founded to close the gender gaps in governance in Nigeria.
The group deployed its team across the FCT and seven states which include Adamawa, Kogi, Kano, Lagos, Oyo, Rivers and Anambra. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Scientist underscores usefulness of genome editing technology to Africa

By Sylvester Thompson

Prof. Olalekan Akinbo, Scientist and Supervisor at Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), says Genome Editing (GEd) technology is useful to Africa.

Akinbo spoke in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

He clarified that Genome Editing (GEd) and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) were not the same in principle.

Making this distinction, he said GMO could apply Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) information from another plant or animal to form a crop, while GEd had nothing to do with external applications.

Akinbo explained that in GEd, all what was needed was already inside the plant’s DNA, hence the idea was to use the inherent information to assist the plant realise its potential.

He stated that this was known as redundant DNA which GEd technology would help to activate.

The scientist, who was responding to why African countries should take GEd seriously, argued that it was an emerging technology with new innovations that help in various areas of improvements.

He listed these areas to include climate, agriculture and health among others, adding that the technology is also a means of improving livelihoods.

Akinbo said the technology of GEd was an initiative the centre advocated with focus on agricultural productivity.

According to him, numerous crops have the potentials to produce optimally but due to the limitations caused by diseases, pests and nutrient insufficiency in the soil, among others, they failed to optimally produce.

Akinbo said in such cases, crops with these shortcomings were not to be exposed to conventional breeding techniques where the parental characteristics could not be passed from one generation to another for enhancement in yields.

He added: “But when the limitation is removed through genome editing which uses advanced breeding technique, then the potential of the crop would be enhanced and productivity in regards to yield will improve.

“This is the most important thing because Africa is an agrarian  continent that relies more on agriculture and most of agricultural productivity is very low due to pest, diseases among other inhibiting factors.’’

Akinbo lamented that the standard of Africa’s agricultural productivity was low in comparison to what is required or expected in international standards of crop yield and output.

He said through GEd technology, Africa’s crop yield and agricultural output would be improved and maximised, which would automatically impact on the Gross Domestic Products(GDPs) of African economies.

He assured that with GEd, instead of cultivating massive hectares of land for less yield as what was experienced in conventional breeding, a reduced area of land would ensure tremendous yield.

The scientist further said that GEd was helpful in addressing issues relating to climate change because there would be significant afforestation that would be going on.

He said: “Africans need food to feed the teeming population, so yield may not need to be one hundred per cent farming with improvement in efficiency and productivity scale.

“So, this technology could also help to improve and support the productivity of crops, with reduced area of cultivated land and provide enough feed for animals as well as increase their meat productivity.’’

Akinbo stated that emerging technologies were numerous but genome editing was one that made use of the technology at the DNA level, which is the information carrier in the body of any living organism.

He said that this was very important as this was one of the advantages of the technology.

Akinbo added: “The truth is that science has proven that this technology will help African nations.’’(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Wednesday congratulated the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu over his victory at the Saturday’s presidential election.

The NYCN National President, Mr Sukubo Sukubo, said the former Lagos State governor’s victory was an endorsement of decades of relentless leadership and his selfless investment in democratic practices.

Sukubo, in a message signed by the National Public Relations Officer of the Council, Mr Dotun Omoleye, said the youth received Tinubu’s victory with much enthusiasm.

“The youth of this country received your victory with much enthusiasm in view of your track record, experience, creativity and peerless commitment to the cause of our nation, and development of the younger people.

“We nurse no doubt, that Tinubu’s presidency will further boost the hope and aspirations of the youth to become productive partners with the government across levels in the task of nation building.

“This is in line with his vision and years of proven devotion to attracting younger people into leadership opportunities and deploying their unique skills to productive sectors.’’

He said the Nigerian youths were confident of the President-elect’s exceptional capacity to engage the youth population in creative and other resourceful enterprises for the prime purpose of lowering the bar of insufficient jobs.

He said the NYCN also believed that the president-elect would use his office to fight insecurity and stimulate the intellectual assets required to develop the nation.

The NYCN urged Tinubu to immediately put measures in place towards tackling these menaces that had constituted existential hurdles to the country’s development.

The council called on the president-elect to implement the critical part of his manifesto that touches on the Students Loan, and the promise to guarantee hitch-free academic calendar.

It said the interventions were crucial to funding the education of younger people from vulnerable homes, and also serve as encouragement to motivate younger minds to be productive as responsible citizens.

“We urge the president-elect, in the spirit of sportsmanship, and his avowed acceptance of dissent choices, to work closely with other co-contestants in a bid to run an all-inclusive government and reunite the nation.

”The organisation wishes Tinubu a peaceful and impact-filled government as he pilots the affairs of the country for the next four years.”

The group further lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting free, fair and credible presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

It urged the electoral body to learn from its past mistakes by taking proactive steps to improve on future elections, especially the forthcoming March 11 governorship and States Assembly polls.

This, the group said, should form part of its ingenious reforms to further deepen and sustain Nigeria’s unbroken democracy. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Candidates: Emulate Jonathan, concede defeat

By Zubairu Idris
Some residents of Katsina State have urged all candidates who lost the presidential election to concede defeat in the interest of peace and stability of the country.
The residents said the candidates should emulate former president Goodluck Jonathan by accepting defeat and congratulating the winner.
They said on Wednesday in Katsina in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that doing so would be in the interest of the nation.
NAN reports that INEC had declared Sen. Bola Tinubu of the APC as winner of the presidential election conducted on Feb. 25.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said Tinubu garnered 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 6,984,520 votes.
Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP) scored 6,101,533 votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
“They should put national interest above their personal interest, conceding defeat will douse tension and prevent possible breakdown of law and order.
“In every contest, there must be a winner and a loser, hence the need for the losers to accept the will of the Almighty Allah in good faith and in the interest of the nation,” one of the residents, Sulaiman Gambo said.
Gambo said Nigerians have been praying to Allah to choose the best leaders for the country in 2023.
“To me the result is what Allah has destined, the winner and losers should consider that as something from Allah.
“The losers should emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was the incumbent President when he lost the election and conceded defeat.
“I think it will be wrong for us to protest this victory. We have elected candidates of our choices, and at the end, Tinubu emerged winner.
“We should pray for him so that the victory will be of benefit to us as a nation,” he said.
On his part, Malam Abubakar Muhammad, called on youths not to allow themselves to be used by any politician to cause violence.
Muhammad advised all the newly elected leaders to focus on alleviating the sufferings of citizens and addressing the insecurity and economic challenges bedeviling the country.
Another resident, Alhaji Kabir Abdullahi, urged those who lost the election to follow legal channels to seek for redress instead of using the youths to cause violence.
“This will not augur well for such politicians and the country,” he said.
He called on all elected leaders to work hard to ensure peace, unity and development in all parts of the country.
Abdullahi advised them to carry the people along so as to have an all inclusive government, in which the people’s interests were well protected. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
