Armed men assassinate Afghanistan journalist

An Afghanistan journalist, Bismillah Adil Aimaq, has been assassinated by some armed men in Dara-e-Taimoor Village on the outskirts of Feroz Koh in Ghor locality, reports say.

Adil, who was also a civil society activist in Ghor, was assassinated on Friday and was the sixth journalist to be killed in two months.

Mohammad Aref Abir, Ghor governor’s spokesman, said Adil, who was the head of a local radio station, Radio Sada-e-Ghor, was killed in the attack by the armed men, TOLO News reported.

On Dec. 21, 2020, Afghanistan journalist Rahmatullah Nikzad, who was also the head of journalists’ union in Ghazni Province, was killed in an armed attack.

Since Nov. 7,  2020, former TOLO News Presenter, Yama Siawash, Radio Azadi reporter Elyas Daee, Enekas TV’s presenter, Malala Maiwand, and Ariana News presenter Fardin Amini have been killed.

The journalists had earlier in November 2020 urged the government to launch a probe into the incessant attacks that resulted in the deaths of several journalists in the country.

They had also complained to government that the lack of investigation of attacks against media workers would cause severe harm to press freedom in the country. (ANI/NAN)

First Lady welcomes first baby of 2021 with gifts

The First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Friday welcomed baby Aliyu Adamu Abubakar, the first baby of the year 2021, born at 12 a.m. at Karu Primary Healthcare Centre, FCT, Abuja.

The baby boy, weighing 3.3kg, born into the family of Mr and Mrs Adamu Abubakar, an indigene of Biu Local Government Area of Borno, is in a healthy condition.

The president’s wife, who arrived at the Karu Healthcare Centre at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, urged pregnant women to always go for ante-natal care for safe delivery.

She advised couples to embrace child spacing methods to ensure healthy mothers and babies.

Mrs Buhari, who was represented by Dr Mairo Almakura, the Special Assistant to the President on African First Lady’s Peace Mission, said child spacing was key to sustaining the health and wellbeing of mothers and their babies.

She emphasised the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, saying six months of the process would benefit both mother and child and for babies to acquire the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.

She said “I want to use this opportunity to rejoice with you on this special day and urge you to ensure that your children are exclusively breastfed and immunised at the early stage of their lives.

“I also want to use this medium to appeal to mothers on the need to ensure hygienic environment and register your children during childbirth to assist government to have accurate database for the purpose of planning for the next generation.”

The first lady presented baby kits, including sanitary items to nursing mothers in the medical facility.

Responding, the parents of the baby expressed gratitude to the first lady for visiting them and for the
kind gesture.

The Head of Karu Primary Healthcare Centre, Dr Akila Udoji, who also thanked the first lady for the visit,
said the medical facility required additional manpower to take care of the number of patients that visit it.

The head said there was an increase in the number of patients who go to the hospital, especially from neighbouring communities. (NAN)

52 escape death in Anambra multiple accident on New Year’s Day

No fewer than 52 people escaped death in an accident involving six vehicles on Ihiala road, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra as the New Year 2021 began on Friday.

Mr Andrew Kumapayi, State Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka.

Kumapayi said the accident which occurred at about 2 p.m., was caused by speeding and loss of control.

“The multiple crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGB268ZT, a Mark Trailer with registration number GWA456YR and another Toyota Hiace bus with registration number NEN106XQ.

“Others are an Acura MDX Jeep with registration number NZM764LK, a Marcapolo Luxury bus with registration number AKD483XF and a Hyundai Jeep with registration number EG172SMK,” he said.

The commander said that witness report reaching the FRSC indicated that the driver of one of the vehicles was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the other five vehicles.

“A total of 52 people were involved in the crash – 38 male adults and 14 female adults. No life was lost.

“11 people out of the 52 sustained some degrees of injuries and were taken to Obijackson Foundation and Our Lady of Lourdes hospitals in Ihiala for treatment by the FRSC rescue team.

“Meanwhile, the FRSC rescue team from Ihiala were on ground controlling traffic as the obstructions were been cleared,” he said.

While wishing the injured people speedy recovery, the sector commander warned motorists against speed limit violation and urged them to drive safely and stay safe to avoid accidents. (NAN)

Gov. Tambuwal dissolves LG caretaker committees in Sokoto

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Friday dissolved the caretaker committees of all the 23 local government councils in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tambuwal announced the dissolution of the committees after meeting with the caretakers in Sokoto.

The governor expressed appreciation to the caretaker committees for the support and encouragement given to his administration in the last two years.

”All of you have tried your best for the administration during and after the electioneering.

“All of you know that the due process is that sole administrators can only be in office for six months; now, you have spent two years,” he said.

“I’m aware that some of you will want to contest; I wish you all the best. Whether you return or not, we will continue to engage you whenever the need arises,” he said.

Tambuwal said that the state Electoral Commission (SOSIEC) had been appropriately briefed and was planning for new elections.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the former Sole Administrator of Sokoto North Local Government Council, Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity and privilege given to them to serve their respective local governments.

“We will continue to remain with you at all times because we have since realised that your intentions and dispositions are for the collective good of the people of the state,” Ibrahim said. (NAN)

Several teens reported dead in carbon monoxide poisoning in Bosnia

Several people died from apparent carbon-monoxide poisoning at New Year in western Bosnia, local media reported on Friday, citing confirmation from a prosecutor.

Details, including the exact number of victims, are expected to be announced once an investigation in the town Posusje is completed.

The Dnevni Avaz daily quotes local sources as saying that eight teenagers died.

According to the Klix.ba news site, the death toll is nine. All sources attribute the deaths to a faulty power generator.

It appears that the group gathered in a holiday house to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Many people in the region are thought to have organised similar events in order to party under the coronavirus lockdown.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is not uncommon in the winter months in the Balkans and in Central and Eastern Europe.

The toxic gas can build up while burning wood, using gas heaters or running generators in confined spaces. (dpa/NAN)

Sanwo-Olu visits Lagos first baby of 2021

Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Wife of the Lagos State governor, on Friday welcomed the first baby of the year 2021 at Alimosho General Hospital, Igando Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sanwo-Olu presented gifts items to the baby and other babies during her goodwill visits to the hospital.

NAN reports that the first baby of the year, a boy weighing 4.3kilogrammes was born to the family of Mr and Mrs Onumba at 2:38 a.m. at the hospital.

Sanwo-Olu said the birth of a child required that the mother is adequately taken care of, to ensure that she got skilled care during labour and delivery.

She added that the birth of a child brings good fortune to a society, saying it was not by chance.

“We are here today not just to celebrate new lives having it in mind that our show of love, kindness and compassion is only an extension of gratitude to God,” she said.

She commended the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Madewa Adebajo and his team for their relentless efforts in rendering effective services to patients.

Sanwo-Olu advised pregnant women to live a healthy lifestyle that would guarantee the wellbeing of their babies.

She, however, urged the people of Lagos to adhere to all COVID-19 protocols in order to curb the spread of the viral disease in the state.

Also, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for health said that celebrating the first baby of the year was symbolic as the first annual activity of state health calenders.

Abayomi , represented by Dr Olusegun Ogboye, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health said the celebration was one of the state’s ways of showing its commitment to the total health of the mother and her child.

“This is a very symbolic event and the significance is demonstrated by the priority visit of the wife of the governor and the presence of important dignitaries.

“They make it a duty to be here to rejoice with our mothers on the birth of their children and that, in itself, speaks volume,”he said.

Abayomi reiterated the state’s commitment to ensure that Lagosians have access to good healthcare delivery and reducing maternal and child mortality.

“It is still very sad that a significant number of people still lose their lives during child birth, because they either don’t have access to medical care or end up in the hands of quacks.

“We will continue do more to reduce maternal mortality through provision of basic healthcare, renew infrastructure and increased human capacity,”he said.

He advised the people to avoid activities that could increase the spread of the ongoing pandemic.

Dr Madewa Adebajo, the Medical Director of Alimosho General Hospital commended the state government for it’s effort in making healthcare more acssessible to the people.

Adebajo said that the hospital took delivery of over 2,000 babies yearly, noting that it’s personnel would continue to put patients first in it’s service delivery.

He added that the newly built oxygen centres in the facility would also help to further meet the needs of patients.

“We have some challenges before, but I can categorically say that most of the problem had been solved.

“We have more workforce now, better and capable to attend to about 50,000 patients that come here on a monthly basis to seek for healthcare.

“We delivered over 2,000 babies annually and intend to do more for our patients this new year,” he said.

NAN reports that other hospitals visited by Sanwo-Olu included, Mushin General Hospital, Orile Agege Hospital and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). (NAN)

The president!, in a congratulatory message by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Friday, cherished the royal father’s commitment to the development of the nation through wise counsels to leaders, and citizens.

Buhari noted with commendation the unwavering position of the Paramount Ruler on issues of national unity, and his steadfastness in always advising that energies should be channelled to building role models and institutions that would be inherited by posterity.

According to him, Ikonne’s knowledge, experience and wisdom will always be relevant in moving the nation forward, especially the sense of neighbourliness, civility and entrepreneurship that he has consistently advocated to promote growth and unity.

Ebonyi welcomes first baby of 2021 at 12:00 a.m.

The wife of Ebonyi Governor, Mrs Racheal Umahi, has welcomed the state’s first baby of 2021 at the Mile Four Maternity Hospital, Abakaliki, delivered around 12:00 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

The baby boy, who  weighed 3.75kg at birth, was given birth to  by Mrs Esther Nwabuchechi, of Ezza-North Local Government Areas of the state, who has seven children.

Umahi, while welcoming the baby, thanked God for the gift of a baby boy and commended the hospital’s management for their commitment and attention to the baby who was incubated.

Speaking during her visit to the first baby who was delivered through a cesarean session, she said: “We are joining the family of this baby to thank God for safe delivery and for the gift of a baby boy.

“We pray for healthy recovery of the baby and mother.

“We pray he  is brought up properly for the betterment of the society and his family,” she said.

The hospital’s  Administrator, Rev. Sister Charity Munoye said that the cesarean operation was successfully done.

“The baby was born at 12:00a.m, weighing 3.75kg and was delivered of Mrs Esther Nwabuchechi.”

Munonye applauded Gov. David Umahi and his wife for impacting the lives of indigent patients in the state.

Nwabuchechi, thanked God for a successful surgical operation and support from the governor’s wife.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that  Umahi presented various baby and food items to the baby’s mother at the hospital. (NAN)

Troops rescue 10 victims, kill bandits in Katsina, Zamfara

The Defence Headquarters says troops of Operation Hadarin Daji have rescued 10 kidnapped victims from bandits, eliminated one of the bandits and arrested one in Katsina and Zamfara States.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Friday, said the operations were conducted on Thursday at different locations.

He said the troops on Thursday, encountered the bandits while on routine patrol around Gidan Dan Nunu and Dutsi villages in Zurmi Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara.

He said that the troops successfully rescued seven victims during the encounter.

He also disclosed that troops of Forward Operating Base Dangulbi, arrested one Zayanu Abdullahi from Shinkafi district with huge amount of money while on stop and search patrol.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in buying stolen cows from bandits.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspect has been a collaborator with bandits. The suspect is in custody for further action.

“The gallant troops acting on credible intelligence that bandits were operating in Kimbisawa village of Batsari LGA of Katsina state, swiftly mobilised to the village and rescued two women and a child kidnapped by the bandits.

“Rescued victims were immediately reunited with their families,” he said.

Enenche further disclosed that troops on the same day,  eliminated one bandit in an ambush, while on routine patrol along Batsari-Jibia Road.

According to him, bandits engaged the troops from a high ground but contact was successfully cleared due to troops’ superior firepower.

“One bandit was neutralised, while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” he said. (NAN)

Abia Govt. approves reopening of schools on Jan. 11

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, has approved the reopening of all schools in the state on Monday, Jan. 11, for the continuation of the first term of 2020/2021 academic session.

A statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Dr Kanaelechi Nwangwa, in Abia on Friday stated that COVID-19 protocols must be strictly adhered to.

Nwangwa, therefore directed all school heads and proprietors to ensure the observance of COVID-19 protocols for the safety of teachers and students.

He said that this was imperative following the the second wave of the COVID-19 in Nigeria.

“They should also note that by this directive, the first term of 2020/2021 will now officially end on Wednesday Feb. 10, 2021.

“This is to ensure that the first term runs a full course as expected.

“Any school proprietor that shortchanges this schedule and decides to cut corners by running an abridged term will be appropriately sanctioned.

“The duration of the first term for the 2020/2021 academic session is from Nov. 2, 2020 to Feb. 10, 2021 with the Christmas break in-between,” he said.

Nwangwa urged school heads and proprietors to be properly guided by the directive to avoid unwanted consequences. (NAN)
