The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has said that Fulani herdsmen were neither under attack nor being forced to leave any part of the South-East, particularly Ebonyi state.

The Southeast Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu, describing it as fake news calculated to create disharmony in parts of the country.

He said that although herdsmen in the area, just as in other parts of the country, have not had it so rosy, the situation was not hopeless.

Siddiki said that the Ebonyi Government had put in place structures that would ensure peaceful coexistence between herders and their host communities.

“It is not as if the relationship has been all smooth all the while, but the state governor has instituted structures meant to contain endemic skirmishes and conflicts.

“One of such structures is the State Committee on Herdsmen, with me representing MACBAN on the committee,” the zonal chairman said.

He said that Gov. Dave Umahi had made interventions, as well as demonstrated creditable interest in forestalling crisis and in mitigating their effects, wherever they broke out.

“Therefore, I implore our herders not to panic and leave their locations, but to only make calculated movements without giving any wrong impressions of aggression against them where none exists,” Siddiki said.

He assured that the association would continue to appreciate Umahi for his steadfastness in seeking to propagate the hospitality the Igbos are known for, notwithstanding the daunting challenges he was facing. (NAN)

Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger, says his administration is committed to actualising the Bobi Grazing Reserve located along Mariga and Mashegu local government areas of the state.

Bello made this known when he visited the Bobi Grazing Reserve to inspect activities on the reserve which were being affected by the increasing cases of armed banditry in the area, saying that government would do whatever it takes to secure the place.

“Without having to give details, I can assure you that we are committed and determined to put in place high-level security measures that will safeguard both government and private sector investments here,” he said.

Bello urged the Fulani communities within the grazing reserve to embrace and key into the Ruga Settlement Programme for their socioeconomic prosperity and in the overall interest of the state.

He charged them to be vigilant and security conscious, protect all facilities and equipment in the reserve, be accommodative but cautious in harboring those ‘wicked’ people who may be out to disrupt the arrangements.

In his remarks, Malam Ardo Abubakar, Leader of the community in the Bobi Grazing Reserve, expressed optimism that the project would be a huge success.

“We have witnessed the planting and harvest of the pastures, we have also seen the reality of artificial insemination and crossbreeding.

‘We are convinced about its potentials as a lucrative and dependable business,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the reserve, which was established by the Northern Region administration, sits on 31, 000 hectares of lush vegetation, with forest stretching several kilometers on end.

It is divided into seven blocks with about 700 households and six earth dams.

It also boasts of solar-powered boreholes and seven pasture blocks.

The reserve, which has been dormant for about six decades is now a beehive of activities.

Every section of the reserve is undergoing transformation as key investors struggle to outclass each other to grab the opportunities thrown up by the Federal Government.

Elite Sports will be allowed to continue in England in spite of Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing a new national COVID-19 lockdown on Monday.

The new lockdown was due to surging infections in the country caused by a more contagious variant of the novel coronavirus.

The United Kingdom has had more than 2.65 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and recorded over 75,000 deaths.

A record 58,784 new cases of the coronavirus were reported on Monday.

England have followed neighbours Scotland in implementing a stringent lockdown with stay-at-home instructions but allowing professional sports to continue.

Outdoor sports venues including outdoor gyms, tennis courts and golf courses will close and outside team sports will not be permitted but elite sports, including Premier League football, will continue.

In football, the League Cup semi-finals are set to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by FA Cup third round action which begins on Friday.

The Premier League also has a fixture crunch to contend with after four matches were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks at Newcastle United, Manchester City and Fulham.

The outbreaks at Newcastle United and Manchester City led to the clubs closing their training centre for a deep clean before the players could return.

The Premier League recorded a season-high 18 positive cases in a week last month and a total of 131 individuals in the English top flight have tested positive in 17 rounds of testing.

The situation is worse in the lower tiers of the football pyramid.

English Football League (EFL) clubs’ players and staff are not tested as regularly and a number of outbreaks led to more than 50 matches being called off this season.

Premiership rugby is also set to continue in spite of a number of games being called off due to outbreaks.

However, unlike the Premier League, cancelled Premiership rugby matches will not be replayed, with four points allocated to the team who were able to play the game and two points to the other club. (Reuters/NAN)

Australian Open players to be shifted to new quarantine hotel

219 total views today

Australian Open organisers have been forced to tear up a quarantine accommodation plan for international players a month before the Grand Slam.

The development followed a threat of legal action from apartment owners at a luxury hotel in Melbourne.

Tennis Australia and government authorities had arranged for players to serve a 14-day mandatory quarantine at the Westin Melbourne ahead of the Feb. 8 to Feb. 21 Australian Open.

On Tuesday, the plan was scrapped after apartment owners at the Westin complained they had not been properly consulted and would seek an injunction against it.

“Following consultation between the owners of The Westin Melbourne, the hotel’s existing residents and COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria, the decision has been made to accommodate players and their support teams arriving in Melbourne for the upcoming ATP at an alternate hotel location,” the Westin said in a statement.

Graeme Efron, a lawyer representing the owners, told Reuters the quarantine plan was “never going to get through”.

“It was the epitome of hubris that they thought people would go along with it without being consulted,” he said.

International players at the Australian Open are expected to arrive in Melbourne from mid-January.

Victoria state Police Minister Lisa Neville told reporters on Tuesday an alternative quarantine hotel had been secured for the players, which would be “stood up today or tomorrow”.

Many of the world’s top players are planning to compete at tournaments at Melbourne Park in the week before the Grand Slam.

World number one Novak Djokovic and second-ranked Rafa Nadal are scheduled to play at the team-based ATP Cup.

This means they will need to arrive in Melbourne at least two weeks before the Feb. 1 to Feb. 5 tournament to complete quarantine in time.

Melbourne, capital of Victoria state, was the epicentre of Australia’s largest second wave outbreak of COVID-19, which started at two quarantine hotels for international arrivals.

More than 18,000 infections were recorded in Victoria during the outbreak and nearly 800 deaths.

Victoria recorded four new cases of COVID-19 in Melbourne on Tuesday, including one in hotel quarantine.(Reuters/NAN)

Touadera wins absolute majority in CAR presidential election

153 total views today

Faustin-Archange Touadera, outgoing president of the Central African Republic (CAR), has won the absolute majority in the first round of the presidential election, according to provisional results announced on Monday.

The National Elections Authority (ANE), the electoral body of the CAR, which announced the results, said Touadera garnered 346,687 votes, or 53.92 per cent of all votes cast.

The voter turnout was 76.31 per cent.

The Constitutional Court is expected to  proclaim the final results on Jan. 19.

Touadera’s main competitor, former Prime Minister Anicet-Georges Dologuele, came in second with 21.01 per cent of all votes cast, according to the ANE.

On Dec. 29, the Democratic Opposition Coalition 2020 (COD-2020), a platform of opposition parties of the CAR, called for the cancellation and rerun of presidential and legislative elections.

The opposition cited low voter turnout in provinces under threat from armed rebels and electoral irregularities linked to insecurity as the reasons that prompted it to call for a “concertation of the active stakeholders of the nation before holding the new elections.”

Since mid-December, major armed groups of the CAR have mobilised to launch an offensive against the government.

The new alliance, known as the Coalition of Patriots for Change, multiplied the attacks and vowed to “march on Bangui”, the capital.

The CAR government accused Francois Bozize, a former head of state whose presidential candidature was invalidated, of having organised the attacks with the rebels for “an attempted coup.”

On Monday afternoon, before the provisional results were announced by the ANE, the Bangui prosecutor’s office declared that it had opened a judicial investigation against Bozize on his support for the rebellion.

The polls on Dec. 27 took place in relative calm with the presence of the United Nations (UN) force (MINUSCA) across the country, but the rebel offensive continued.

On Sunday, the rebels invaded the town of Bangassou.

A day earlier, the rebels had attacked Damara before they were repelled by government forces and UN peacekeepers.

Touadera has a house and a farm in Damara, located about 70 kilometers north of Bangui.

In a statement released on Sunday, MINUSCA said it held armed groups and Bozize “responsible” for the attacks over the weekend, which took place “in a context of electoral disruption.” (Xinhua/NAN)
