Sen. Ali Ndume (APC-Borno) says the strangulating insecurity in North-East hampers the successful execution of Federal Government’s road projects in the region.

Ndume, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, made this known in Maiduguri on Monday while speaking with newsmen.

He said that the construction and rehabilitation of some major roads had been approved by the Federal Government but the roads were abandoned due to the activities of Boko Haram insurgents.

He explained that Borno, Yobe and Adamawa were some of the states terrorised by the insurgents, making it difficult to rehabilitate and construct road networks approved by the Federal Government.

He said: “The first is Dikwa-Marte-Monguno road which was approved for N60.273 billion and the Numan road linking Borno and Adamawa approved for N15.527 billion.

“The third is the road from Gombi-Biu linking Adamawa and Borno also approved for N7.643 billion. The State government has also taken over the construction of 34km Damboa- Chibok- Mbalala federal road which had for long been neglected.

“It has also embarked on reconstruction and rehabilitation of the dilapidated Biu- Azare – Shaffa- Garkida federal highway linking Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa, but the workers were forced to vacate the site due to activities of the insurgents.

“Damaturu-Maiduguri has been allocated but as you can see the work has stopped. Also, the road from Buni Yadi- Biu was also abandoned. Even passengers don’t pass through the road regularly due to the threat pose by the terrorist,’’ he said.

Ndume lamented that no single Federal Government project was taking place in the Northern part of Borno due to the fear that contractors might come under attack by the insurgents.

He said that the insurgents had also taken advantage of the deplorable conditions of the roads to abduct commuters and to even stage ambush attacks against troops.

“There cannot be any meaningful development without peace. It will be therefore difficult to see meaningful development especially on road construction by the Federal Government.

The Federal Government says its 774,000 Special Public Works (SPW) jobs will commence on Wednesday.

The programme is designed to engage 1,000 artisans from each local government in public works for three months at N20,000 each per month.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed this at a new year media briefing on Monday in Lagos.

He said the government had also launched the N75 billion Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) targeted at interested young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35 years.

According to him, the aim of the scheme is to financially empower Nigerian youths to generate at least 500,000 jobs between 2020 and 2023.

To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the economy across all levels, the minister said the Federal Government had unveiled the Economic Sustainability Plan to support families, small and medium enterprises and the manufacturing sector.

He said a major highlight of the plan is the provision of solar power to five million Nigerian households in the next 12 months.

The minister also said the initiative would produce 250,000 jobs and impact on 25 million beneficiaries through the installation.

He said various other interventions were made through the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme as well as the Trader and Market Moni loans.

“For the very vulnerable, significant steps taken include the expansion of the National Social Register to 3.6 million beneficiaries across the 36 states.

“Support was provided to over 8.8 million households through the 70,000 Metric Tons food grains released from the Strategic Reserve.

“About 1.3 million vulnerable households also benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfers across 34 states,’’ he said.

The minister said the Central Bank of Nigeria also announced a number of measures to cushion the impact of the pandemic, including reduction of the interest rate on intervention loans from nine per cent to five per cent

He said a one-year extension of a moratorium was granted on principal repayments for CBN intervention facilities.

Mohammed further said the CBN created N50 billion target credit facility for affected small and medium enterprises as well as N1 trillion in loans to boost local manufacturing and production across critical sectors. (NAN)

The Federal Government has given an assurance that the country will witness improved security this year.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the assurance at a new year media briefing on Monday in Lagos.

The minister disclosed that a number of the platforms the country had been expecting to pep up the battle against terrorists and bandits would arrive in the new year.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari had continued to provide the armed forces and other security agencies with whatever was required to function better in terms of platforms, logistics and capacity development.

“As the president said in his new year broadcast, the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police are to be re-energised and re-organised.

“This is with a view to enhancing their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities in some parts of the country,” he said.

Mohammed paid tributes to all security personnel for their sacrifice, dedication to duty and patriotism, noting that the nation remained in their debt for their service.

The minister said that 2020 was one of the most challenging years for the country with COVID-19 and EndSARS protest impacting on the economy in addition to security challenges.

He said the government, however, rose with courage and determination to tackle the challenges and had continued to do so.

“The year 2020 has been a challenging year, undoubtedly one of the most challenging years for the country.

“A global pandemic that triggered an economic recession, security challenge and an unnecessary violence that stemmed from what started as a peaceful protest are just some of the challenges.

“It is to the credit of the President Mohammadu Buhari Administration that it tackled these challenges headlong.

“Thanks to the several complementary fiscal, real sector and monetary interventions proactively introduced by the
government to forestall a far worse decline of the economy and alleviate the negative consequences of the pandemic,” he said.

The minister said the government equally introduced the Economic Sustainability Plan and took significant steps to reach out to the vulnerable.

Specifically, he said the National Social Register was expanded to 3.6 million beneficiaries across the 36 states while support was provided to 8.8 million households through the 70,000 metric tons food grains released from the Strategic Reserve.

Mohammed also said no fewer than 1.3 million vulnerable households benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfers across 34 states.

He said various other interventions were made through the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme as well as the Trader and Market Moni loans.

The minister berated opposition figures for their constant criticism of the programmes and activities of government as well as whatever the president said or did without justifiable reasons. (NAN)

Post-Brexit rules adding to West Brom transfer woes – Allardyce

220 total views today

West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce believes the January transfer window could be the toughest of his career.

This is a period when he deals with post-Brexit regulations and the COVID-19 pandemic while looking to bolster his struggling side.

New rules that came into force from Jan. 1 mean Premier League clubs will not be allowed to sign players from European Union countries without a work permit.

Also, foreign players under the age of 18 cannot be signed at all.

Allardyce, whose side are second from bottom with eight points from 17 games, said deals for three potential recruits had already fallen through as a result of the new rules.

“I have found three players already who were capable of coming here and they’re not allowed. It’s a shame,” Allardyce said.

The criteria to sign players are based on a points system.

The system considers the number of senior and youth international appearances, club appearances as well as the quality of the selling club, its league position and the league itself.

“Due to the new regulations in terms of the permit they were unable to come to this country, whereas (previously) they would have done. I have to look at that and think `can he qualify?’ ” Allardyce added.

“That has made life a bit more difficult. It’s not so much the pandemic, it’s the change of rules because of Brexit.

“We’ll do what we can… Finding a player in this pandemic is going to be the hardest window I have ever worked in.

“No disrespect to my players because they’re all working as hard as they can, but I do have to find (a) better (way) to lift the squad.

“Whatever player comes in, they have to be better than what we have and capable of going into the team almost immediately.”(Reuters/NAN)

Niger to reinforce military presence after over 100 killed in attack

Niger’s government has announced plans to ramp up military presence in a region in which more than 100 civilians were killed in an attack by gunmen over the weekend.

Niger aims to permanently set up a company in the affected province, said the commander in charge, Mamane Sani.

Sani spoke after visiting the site of Saturday’s attack on two villages near the border with Mali together with Prime Minister Brigi Rafini.

He said more than 100 people were killed in the attack on two villages – Tchombangou and Zaroumdareye – with around 30 others injured.

According to Sani, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Terrorist groups that have pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda or the militant group, Islamic State (IS), are active in Niger and other countries in the region.

The government has little control over the desert-like expanses outside the cities, a fact exploited by both jihadist groups and criminal networks.

Niger is one of the most important transit countries for African migrants, who want to reach Europe via the Mediterranean.

Together with Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Burkina Faso, Niger is part of the G5 Sahel group that has pledged to fight terrorist groups. (dpa/NAN)
