UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Saturday’s massacre by suspected jihadists in neighbouring Republic of Niger.

Reports quoted the country’s Prime Minister, Brigi Rafini, as saying no fewer than 100 people were killed by yet-to-be identified gunmen in two villages.

According to him, 70 people were killed in the village of Tchombangou and 30 others in Zaroumdareye, both near the country’s border with Mali.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks said to have been carried out simultaneously by assailants who carried out the attacks on motorcycles.

In a statement by his spokesman, Mr Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief urged the Nigerien authorities to fish out and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Guterres also called on the Government to enhance the protection of civilians in the country.

He expressed his “deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the people and Government of Niger and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured”.

“The Secretary-General reaffirms the solidarity and support of the United Nations to the Government and people of Niger in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime,” the statement said.(NAN)

Post-Brexit rules adding to West Brom transfer woes – Allardyce

221 total views today

West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce believes the January transfer window could be the toughest of his career.

This is a period when he deals with post-Brexit regulations and the COVID-19 pandemic while looking to bolster his struggling side.

New rules that came into force from Jan. 1 mean Premier League clubs will not be allowed to sign players from European Union countries without a work permit.

Also, foreign players under the age of 18 cannot be signed at all.

Allardyce, whose side are second from bottom with eight points from 17 games, said deals for three potential recruits had already fallen through as a result of the new rules.

“I have found three players already who were capable of coming here and they’re not allowed. It’s a shame,” Allardyce said.

The criteria to sign players are based on a points system.

The system considers the number of senior and youth international appearances, club appearances as well as the quality of the selling club, its league position and the league itself.

“Due to the new regulations in terms of the permit they were unable to come to this country, whereas (previously) they would have done. I have to look at that and think `can he qualify?’ ” Allardyce added.

“That has made life a bit more difficult. It’s not so much the pandemic, it’s the change of rules because of Brexit.

“We’ll do what we can… Finding a player in this pandemic is going to be the hardest window I have ever worked in.

“No disrespect to my players because they’re all working as hard as they can, but I do have to find (a) better (way) to lift the squad.

“Whatever player comes in, they have to be better than what we have and capable of going into the team almost immediately.”(Reuters/NAN)

Niger to reinforce military presence after over 100 killed in attack

Niger’s government has announced plans to ramp up military presence in a region in which more than 100 civilians were killed in an attack by gunmen over the weekend.

Niger aims to permanently set up a company in the affected province, said the commander in charge, Mamane Sani.

Sani spoke after visiting the site of Saturday’s attack on two villages near the border with Mali together with Prime Minister Brigi Rafini.

He said more than 100 people were killed in the attack on two villages – Tchombangou and Zaroumdareye – with around 30 others injured.

According to Sani, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Terrorist groups that have pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda or the militant group, Islamic State (IS), are active in Niger and other countries in the region.

The government has little control over the desert-like expanses outside the cities, a fact exploited by both jihadist groups and criminal networks.

Niger is one of the most important transit countries for African migrants, who want to reach Europe via the Mediterranean.

Together with Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Burkina Faso, Niger is part of the G5 Sahel group that has pledged to fight terrorist groups. (dpa/NAN)

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said that 79 illegal migrants were rescued and eight others went missing off the Libyan coast.

“IOM staff are providing emergency assistance to 79 migrants returned to Libya by the coast guard today,’’ the UN body tweeted.

Among the rescued migrants were 13 women and seven children, it said.

Libya has been mired in the chaos following the ouster and killing of its leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, making the North African country a preferred point of departure for illegal migrants who intend to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards Europe.

Thousands of illegal migrants, who were either rescued at sea or arrested by the authorities, remain detained in overcrowded detention centres in Libya.

This is in spite of repeated international calls to close those centres. (Xinhua/NAN)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday warned the public not to fall prey to fraudsters and rumour mongers.

The board, who gave the advice in a weekly Bulletin of the Office of the Registrar, said that it has yet to begin the sale of the 2021 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms.

”JAMB reiterates that it has not began sale of its 2021 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) application forms, neither has it announced a date for the exercise.

”The clarification became necessary following fake news that the board has began the sale and was urging prospective applicants to procure same from some nebulous selling outlets.

”The public is to note that the news of purported sale of the registration forms is false and an attempt to mislead the public.”

The board stated that it has defined channels of communicating to the public and has not delegated any persons or group of persons to handle the sale on its behalf.

It also added that the public would be duly informed on the commencement of the exercise via appropriate media platforms once it was done planning the process.

JAMB explained that the delay in the start of the sale of the application forms was as a result of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic in the country but would conclude arrangements soon.

The board urged all to always confirm information relating to its activities on the provided online platforms, so as not to fall prey to the antics of fraudsters.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 2.1 million candidates registered for the 2020 UTME and Direct Entry.
