The Nigeria Labour Congress, Gombe State Council, has urged the state governor, Inuwa Yahaya, to ensure the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers in the state.

Its Chairman, Mr Yusuf Bello, made the demand while delivering his speech on Thursday at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe, during the commemoration of the 2025 Workers’ Day in the state.

Bello said the appeal became necessary given the economic situation in the country which was affecting all workers, irrespective of levels.

He said it had become a concern that should be considered as it was the right of the LG workers to enjoy the new wage.

“While we sincerely commend your unwavering commitment and strong political will in advancing the development of our beloved state, we feel compelled to bring a few pressing issues to your attention.

“We are confident that, true to your characteristic determination, enthusiasm, and dedication, Your Excellency will consider these concerns with the aim of finding lasting solutions.

“Effective implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers is essential, as it is a rightful entitlement.

“They endure the same economic challenges as their counterparts in the state workforce and should be treated accordingly,” he said.

Bello also appealed for an upward review in the monthly pensions of retirees at both the state and local government levels to help retirees cope with the rising cost of living.

He further advised the state government to recruit additional personnel or consider transferring manpower from the local government to the state civil service.

He emphasised that such would help in addressing the gap created in the state civil service as a result of retirements, transfers, and voluntary withdrawals from service.

Bello commended the Yahaya-led administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the state while assuring the state government of the council’s support in achieving the desired goals of governance.

On his part, the State Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, said that the Yahaya-led administration had demonstrated commitment to the welfare and well-being of workers in the state.

Jatau said the prompt payment of salaries and the fact that the state was among the first states to implement the national minimum wage showed the commitment of the state government to the welfare of workers.

Responding to the demands by NLC, Jatau said, “I wish to assure you that all these will be looked into.

“Indeed, most of them are already being worked on by the committee set up to handle them.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FG to inaugurate e-portal for health research

FG to inaugurate e-portal for health research

The Federal Government says it will inaugurate an electronic portal to revolutionise health research proposal submission and approval in the country.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day workshop on ‘Electronic Portal Protocol Management System and National Ethics Standardisation Sensitisation’ in Abuja on Thursday.

The workshop is for members of the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC).

Salako, who was represented by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Kamil Shotirere, said the portal would enhance Nigeria’s capacity to conduct an ethical review process of high-quality research that meets international standards.

According to him, the e-portal is expected to be operational before the end of 2025.

“We need to test run it after this training and also see how effectively it is working before we tell the world to submit research proposals.

“We are making sure that before the end of the third quarter of this year, they should start submitting.”

Salako said the workshop was a significant step toward streamlining and strengthening research ethics review processes in Nigeria.

He also said that it was for training the committee members in carrying out their responsibilities in enforcing standards and protocols for ethically conducting clinical research.

According to him, the committee is important in ensuring that researchers observe the necessary ethical guidelines when carrying out research that concerns human beings.

“The committee will make sure that every proposal that is submitted for research passes through the necessary procedure, ensure the research is done properly, and ensure researchers are ethical about the research.

“As a researcher anywhere, you can just log into the portal, make your submission, and if there are fees to be paid for review, you pay it, fulfil all requirements, make all the attachments that are needed, submit it, and they will allocate it to the reviewer.

”The reviewer goes through it, asks questions, and sends you feedback.”

Dr Lolade Adeyemi, Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Health on Research and Innovation, said the Federal Government was committed to providing financial support to research in the country.

She, however, said that the funding was insufficient and some partners were already involved.

Adeyemi identified the Gates Foundation, and the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Centre as supporters of the workshop.

“So once the international community sees that we’re doing this, they will see that this is what they want to partner with and the government has to provide more funding, and they’re doing that.

“If it has to be sustainable, maybe some things have to be paid for.

“We are also trying to have conversations about charging a nominal fee, so we have to find mechanisms of sustainability to be able to pay for this.”

The Chairman of NHREC, Prof. Richard Adegbola, said a major challenge in research was the lack of infrastructural support.

Adegbola said that the infrastructural support was in terms of the way the reports are submitted, reviewed and returned.

He noted that this leads to inefficiency and delay of protocols, noting that researchers with grants support might lose their grants because they cannot start their project until they get ethical approval.

“What the e-portal will do is the investigator will be able to monitor his or her submission in real-time, you will know whether it’s been accepted, whether the period of review is within the base or the time that they have allocated to it.

“The e-portal is going to improve efficiency but also harmonise how we do things across the country.”

In a goodwill message, Dr Collins Mitambo of the Gates Foundation, emphasised the importance of strong regulatory and ethical systems in driving innovation and trust in clinical research.

He said that the future of public health and medical innovation in Africa relies heavily on the ability to conduct research that is not only scientifically sound but also ethically robust.

“This two-year project reflects a shared commitment to build systems that protect participants, ensure data integrity, and foster public trust.

“The project will ensure the clinical trial review process is efficient, predictable and transparent.”

Mitambo noted that the optimisation initiative would support the capacity building of regulatory bodies, ethics committees, and research institutions in Nigeria. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday thanked Nigerian workers for their patriotism, perseverance and promised to cushion economic hardship.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed  Dingyadi, said this at the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja.

The President described workers as the “backbone of our society, whose dedication and resilience drive the engine of the Nigerian economy and uphold the values of our dear nation.”

He said the  government recognised the contributions of the organised labour in fostering dialogue, promoting workers’ rights, and ensuring that their voices are always heard, loud and clear.

Tinubu said the theme for this year’s May Day celebrations,”Reclaiming the civic space in the midst of economic hardship” demanded a collective attention.

He added that the theme served as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute most productively to the growth and prosperity of the nation.

“As your president, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating conducive climate for the common good of all of us.

“Economic hardship is a global phenomenon, cut across all regions, testing the resolve of world leaders, but has not broken our spirit,” he said.

The President said the government was well aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship for Nigerians occasioned by struggles and challenges of workers and indeed many Nigerians.

“These ranges from a rising cost of living, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, loss of livelihood, and pressure to provide necessities for your families, amongst others.

“These challenges are real, critical, and demand definite solutions, which I, as your president, am poised to address,” he said.

The President assured his administration’s commitment to implementing deliberate policies aimed at promoting job creation, decent jobs, poverty alleviation, economic growth and stability.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable.

Speaking on the theme of the day, Tinubu underscored the need for reclaiming the civic space, “where ideas are exchanged, voices are heard, and change is born”.

“A vibrant civic space is the cornerstone of democracy, and it is essential for holding leaders’ accountable, fostering innovation, and ensuring every Nigerian has a seat at the table.

“Therefore, to reclaim this space, we must prioritise transparency, inclusivity, equity, and dialogue.

“We must protect the rights of workers to organise, advocate, and participate in the decision-making process.

“We must ensure that the voices of the marginalised are amplified, not silenced, as it is through this space that we can build trust, unity, and a shared vision for a better future,” he said.

The President assured that the government would continue to strengthen labour protections, improve job security, and ensure fair treatment for all workers, in line with international best practices. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Niger has urged the state government to increase its members’ salaries due to the hazardous nature of their jobs.

The state Chairman of the union,  Usman Abubakar-Dabban, made the request at a reception organised for the workers to mark the International Workers Day in Minna on Thursday.

He said that since health workers were game-changers, there was the need to increase their wages.

According to Abubakar-Dabban, an increase of 150 per cent will justify the critical role health workers play in the system.

He lauded the governor and the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, for implementing the new minimum wage of N80,000, which was above what was recommended by the Federal Government.

He hailed the deputy governor for initiating the building of the union’s hall when he was the chairman of the union, which would be inaugurated soon.

He urged the union members to adhere to the ethics of the profession to ensure they enjoy the welfare they crave for from the state government.

Earlier in his remarks, Aminu Yusuf, Special Adviser to Niger governor on Labour Matters, lauded the workers for the reception.

Yusuf said workers day was a day for labour leaders to take stock of their achievements, consolidate on them and identify new challenges, so that they could open a new chapter towards addressing them.(NAN)

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youths to leverage the skills acquisition programme of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) for gainful employment.

Tinubu made the call in Abuja, during the opening ceremony of NASRDA skills acquisition project being executed in collaboration with Grassroots Bridge Builders (GBB), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

Represented by Mr Adewale Adeogun, Chairman, Tinubu National Think Tank (TnT), he said the project was part of the many initiatives of the government under its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project targets to train 60,000 youths with relevant life changing skills.

“Most of our people are not aware of some of the policies that the President has brought forward because they were not informed, misinformed.

“The NASRDA/GBB project is here to educate, train and allow NGOs, corporate bodies, religious bodies, some support group leaders on these activities and we have millions of people unaware.

“We want Nigerians to embrace this programme, come up with ideas of how we can get millions, at least 50 million Nigerians out of this unemployment circle,’’ Tinubu said.

He said the Federal Government was in discussions with companies, government institutions to employ the youths who had benefited from the project.

“These youths, when trained through our platform, we will introduce them to ministries, agencies, parastatals and industries for employment.’’

Director-General of NASRDA, Dr Matthew Adepoju, said that Nigerian youths were intelligent, hardworking and creative, adding that the government was committed to giving them skills for development.

“We can use space science and technology to empower the youth to function in their own ecosystem,’’ he said.

He recalled the agency had already started a pilot skills acquisition programme on mast installation, maintenance and management of telecom infrastructure, with over 60 youths in participation.

According to him, the training is expected to touch on different sectors, states and local government levels because that is where the bulk of our youths reside.

Dr Haruna Mohammed, Technical Adviser to the D-G, said they were at the level of profiling the participants.

“The first was the pilot project, which we had over 60 participants, and we are scaling it up now, and we are profiling them, gathering data, trying to know how to spread it across the country.

“For this next stage, we are proposing 5000 youths and we recently had a request from some ministries to train about 60,000 youths,’’ he said.

Mohammed said that the youths would be trained on 27 different skills such as artistry, carpentry and painting.

Mr Ibrahim Igoche, Chief Executive Officer, GBB, encouraged other NGO partners to join the government in building the skills of Nigerian youths to reduce poverty. (NAN)

Nigeria joins global cross-border privacy forum

Nigeria has joined the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum as an associate member to explore better ways of cross-border data transfers and data protection.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission(NDPC) made the announcement on Wednesday at a media briefing organised ahead of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) conference and annual general meeting in Abuja.

The conference is expected to hold on May 6 to May 8 and will be focusing on “Balancing Innovation in Africa, Data Privacy and Protection in Emerging Technologies.”

Olatunji said that the move is seen as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy and demonstrating its commitment to data protection and privacy standards.

The Global CBPR Forum, established in 2022, aims to facilitate the free flow of data and promote cooperation on data protection and privacy globally.

He recalled the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, which had mandated NDPC to decide for the adequacy of data protection, taking into account enforcement of data subjects rights in other countries.

“Seasoned experts have been lined up to lead discussions in areas concerning the African digital economy, AI in African privacy paradox, regulatory approaches to data privacy in Africa, especially in the area of emerging technologies which have different approaches.

“We also have topics on data protection in the area of fintech, balancing innovation with privacy, the single digital market in the spirit of Africa free trade zone, among others.

“These issues are all important in the Fourth Industrial Revolution where data constantly flows across borders for various reasons including health, education, tourism, e-commerce and more.

“In this regard, Nigeria is exploring various cross-border data frameworks as provided under the NDPA for the purpose of safeguarding data subjects rights and protecting Nigeria’s data sovereignty.

“To this end, we are pleased to announce our intention to join the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR)Forum as an associate member,” Olatunji said.

He stated that other mechanisms for exploring cross-border data transfers included the existence of national legislation on data protection, establishment of an independent data protection authority to serve as regulator when it comes to data processing in various countries.

“We also approve binding corporate rules, conducts, standards of operation and certification mechanisms for cross-border data transfer.

“Nigeria will have the opportunity to observe the procedure of ensuring accountability within organisations during cross-border data transfers and ensure that indigenous cross-border data organisations are able to leverage accountability procedures.

“This framework will ensure that organisations will have more options in cross-border transfer of personal data and relevant safeguards for data protection under the NDPA are painstakingly implemented,” he said.

He said that the government was in the process of setting up a strategic task team of stakeholders  for the purpose of cross pollination of ideas in the area of cross-border data transfer, while considering the beneficial use of data for sustainable development in Nigeria.

Olatunji said that the NADPA event would attract over 1000 delegates from 30 African countries, technocrats from Asia, Europe, Middle East and North America.

He said the conference would feature constructive interactions, live sessions, breakout sessions, among other events and also showcase exhibitions, visitation of tourist sites in the FCT, thereby promoting the richness in Nigeria’s cultural heritage and people.

“The opportunity to host NADPA is one of the opportunities we are taking to foster trust and confidence in our digital economy.

“This commission is fully convinced that through this trust, Nigerian businesses and entrepreneurs will have more opportunities to create jobs and generate wealth as projected under the eight Presidential priority areas.”

Mrs Christine Harbaugh, U. S. Embassy’s Acting-Deputy Chief of Missions, said Nigeria’s membership as an associate member of CBPR showed the country’s commitment and leadership in the global digital economy and clear message on being open for digital business.

Harbaugh recognised Nigeria’s growth in digital growth and  transformation, with startups, companies driving innovation in different sectors.

“By beginning the process of aligning with the CBPR Forum, Nigeria is further solidifying its position as a global hub for digital business and innovation.

“This move tells U.S. and global tech companies and investors that the Nigerian market presents tangible global opportunities.

“In today’s interconnected world, the safety and sanctity of cross-border data flows are paramount and as data becomes the lifeblood of the digital era, it is essential that we establish robust frameworks to protect it.

“By joining the CBPR Forum, Nigeria is taking a proactive step to ensure that data transferred across borders is handled with high standards of privacy and security,” she said.

According to her, this move will not only protect U.S. and Nigerian citizens’ personal data but also build trust with international partners.

She said that the global CBPR forum created spaces for those handling personal data to come together around common data protection, privacy interests and build trust in cross-border flows of data.

“The CBPR Forum promotes interoperability and helps to bridge different regulatory approaches to data protection and privacy.

“By joining the Global Forum, Nigeria becomes part of a committed international community working to reduce data protection risks and ensure strong safeguards travel with the data no matter where it is transferred.

“This commitment to data protection will enhance Nigeria’s reputation as a reliable partner in the global digital economy,”Harbaugh said.

She stated that approximately 60 per cent of Nigerian startups were incorporated in the United States and facilitating cross-border data flows would increase the ability of such companies to service U.S. and Nigerian clients and further fuel the growing digital trade.

“We are excited about the opportunities this will bring and look forward to working closely with our Nigerian partners to build a secure and prosperous digital future,” she said.

The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association Nigeria (ATSSSAN) on Thursday emphasised that workers have the constitutional right to associate.

Mr Ilitrus Ahmadu, the National President of ATSSSAN, said this in his 2025 Workers Day celebration speech on Thursday in Lagos.

Ahmadu urged employers to allow workers to freely join any union of their choice.

“To our tripartite partners/employers, the time for respect for the inalienable constitutional right of workers to associate is long overdue.

“We must respect the constitutional right of workers, the principles of dialogue and collective bargaining as the pathways to healthy industrial relations that will foster growth and prosperity in our industry.

“The consequences of the absence of a healthy industrial relation are certainly chaos and disruptive conducts that will affect the industry in the negative,” he said.

Ahmadu lauded the perseverance and courage of aviation workers.

According to him, amid poor remuneration and high cost of living, members of the association are contributing their best to national development.

“This uncommon resilience speaks courage and our collective desire to continue to fly the flag of our struggle until victory is attained.

“Therefore, to all of you, I say: solidarity forever,” he said.

The unionist also thanked employers for partnership and support, emphasising the importance of dialogue in dispute resolution.

“As a senior staff union, we respect boundaries and we have always embraced dialogue as key to effective dispute resolution, and you are assured we will remain focused.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disassociated itself from a fraudulent site requesting payments from candidates who missed the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The board said that the site, “Copyrightwriter Personal J Rescheduling Flw” and account number 8520641017 at Sterling Bank, associated with it, are scam.

The disclaimer is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday by the Board’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

Benjamin said the account is being exploited to defraud unsuspecting candidates who missed their UTME.

“We issue this urgent notice to inform the public about this nefarious scheme targeting candidates who were unable to participate in the UTME.

“Some unscrupulous individuals are deceitfully soliciting payments of N15,700 under the false pretence of offering rescheduling services for the examination.

“Let us be unequivocal: this, it is a blatant scam, and we are confident that the public will not fall prey to such cheap and regressive tactics.

“The individuals behind this scam have no affiliation with JAMB or any legitimate government agency.

“The account details provided in these communications are entirely fictitious and bear no connection to any official processes; they exist solely for the purpose of perpetrating fraud,” he said.

Benjamin called on Sterling ank to take immediate and decisive action against this criminal activity.

According to him, JAMB has reported the matter to the relevant security agencies and actively pursuing those responsible for this deceitful act.

He further said that “JAMB does not reschedule examinations for candidates who miss their scheduled tests due to reasons unrelated to the Board’s actions”.

He, however, said that the Board is conducting a thorough investigation for candidates whose biometrics failed during verification and were thus unable to sit for the examination.

He said those without discrepancies would be invited to retake the examination at no cost, stressing that “no cost is required”.

“It is imperative to understand that JAMB does not charge any fees for examinations after a candidate has completed their registration.

“We strongly urge all candidates to remain vigilant and not to succumb to these fraudulent schemes.

“Protect yourselves and report any suspicious activity immediately,” he explained. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
