Delta approves N17bn for roads, bridge, drainage projects (Page 2,749)

Delta Government has said it approved construction of over 10 roads, a bridge and erosion control drainage projects in the state at an estimated cost of about N17 billion.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the approval was part of the decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa on Thursday in Asaba.

He said that in line with the Gov. Okowa’s “Stronger Delta” mantra, more road projects would be awarded depending on availability of funds.

The commissioner put the total cost of all the projects at N17 billion.

“The roads approved for construction by the council included; 1.9km internal roads in Okpara Inland, Ethiope East LGA, the 4.5km Ituru Road, Elume, Sapele LGA.

"The 1.9km Degeleba Township Road; 1.6Km Okporoza Township Road, Gbaramatu; 1.4km Ogbe-Ijaw Internal Road all in Warri South West LGA.

“Also, the 1.4km Batigo Good Road, Oleh, Isoko South LGA; 5.1km Baleke Iregwa road, Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika South; 2.6km Owerri-Olubor, Ute-Ogbeje Road, Ika North East; 4.4km Ogbi-Ebabu Road, Onicha-Ukwani, Ndokwa West LGA.

"The rehabilitation and expansion of the 3.4km Old Lagos-Asaba Road, Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state,” he said.

He said the construction of a hitherto wooden bridge across River Ethiope in Umusume community, Ukwuani LGA to link neighbouring communities also got the approval of government.

“In our commitment to flood control, the state government also approved for the continuation of another phase of Storm Water Drainage in the state capital territory,” Aniagwu said.

He also said the council approved a World Bank Assisted Programme known as “Delta Cares” which was targeted at developing youths in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to expand their businesses in the state.

According to the commissioner, the programme is in collaboration with the state government and World Bank to address three thematic areas; social services, agriculture and ICT.

He said the state government also approved the upgrade of facilities in some of the General Hospitals in the state to meet current exigencies, given the recent gas explosion in Agbor.

He listed the three hospitals that would benefit in the first phase of the upgrade as: the General Hospital, Warri, General Hospital Agbor and General Hospital Sapele.

“The council also approved about N390 million for the payment of gratuity of retired staff of the Delta State University,” Aniagwu said. (NAN)
