President Bola Tinubu extends condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Christian Chukwu, Nigerian football icon, who died on Saturday at the age of 74.

“The President joins the football community in mourning a legend whose contributions to the beautiful game elevated Nigeria’s status globally,” Mr Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, said.

Chukwu captained the Green Eagles to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations victory and later coached the Super Eagles, which won a bronze medal at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nicknamed “Chairman” for his commanding presence and leadership on the field, Chukwu devoted his club career to Enugu Rangers, where he won multiple titles and led the club to continental glory with their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.

President Tinubu eulogised Chukwu for a career defined by passion, discipline and commitment to national pride.

“Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism.

“He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.

“His legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area.

“We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration,” the President stated.

Tinubu prayed for the repose of the departed sportsman and comfort for his family, hoping they find solace in his enduring legacy. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Entrepreneurs are solution providers – Expert

Entrepreneurs are solution providers – Expert

Dr Stephen Akintayo, a renowned business strategist and convener, Business Growth Conference, has described entrepreneurs as solution providers who must continuously evolve to meet challenges within the Nigerian business environment.

Akintayo said this at the 2025 Business Growth Conference in Abuja.

According to him, while Nigeria remains a difficult terrain for businesses, entrepreneurs must rise to the occasion by innovating and adapting to changing realities.

“Entrepreneurship is about solving problems. When petrol became too expensive, smart entrepreneurs shifted to CNG and vehicle conversion.

“That is what being an entrepreneur is all about, constantly creating solutions,” he said.

He said that while the economic environment was harsh, the responsibility of business owners was to adapt, restructure, and find alternative pathways to thrive.

“The darker the environment, the brighter the light. That is the mindset every entrepreneur must embrace,” Akintayo said.

Akintayo called on the authorities, particularly state governments, to engage more actively with entrepreneurs by organising regular consultative meetings and creating policies that encourage investment.

“I want to see governors sit down with business owners quarterly, listen to their challenges, and develop policies that make it easier for businesses to grow,” he said.

On the need for capacity development, the business strategist emphasised the importance of training and mentorship, noting that most business failures stem from lack of knowledge rather than just poor infrastructure or policy.

“Many founders have not attended training in years, yet the business landscape is changing every day.

Without constant learning, there’s is no growth,” he said.

Also speaking, gender advocate and entrepreneur, Mrs Hansatu Adegbite, reiterated the importance of collaboration, networking and volunteerism in building strong, resilient businesses.

“This conference is not just about survival, it is about growth, partnerships and scaling up to solve bigger problems,” she said.

Adegbite urged young people to take advantage of free resources online and learn from successful individuals in their communities.

“There are free tools everywhere, YouTube, Google, books. Start from where you are and stay aspirational,” she added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference featured sessions on funding, virality, customer growth and leadership.

It had in attendance, speakers from various sectors sharing insights and practical tools for business success.

The Lagos edition of the conference is scheduled to hold from April 19 to April 20.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The NSC D-G extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Chukwu and the entire Nigerian football community.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chukwu, 74, died on Saturday after a period of illness.

He was one of Nigeria’s most iconic football figures, fondly called ‘Chairman’, he captained Nigeria’s national team to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980, defeating Algeria 3–0 in the final at the National Stadium in Lagos.

He later served as head coach of the Super Eagles and remained a towering figure in Nigerian football.

The former Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development said the NSC will continue to pay tribute to the Enugu-born icon whose influence remain etched in the annals of African football history.

NAN reports that Chukwu began his football journey with Enugu Rangers, leading the club to domestic dominance and continental success, including the now-defunct African Cup Winners Cup in 1977.

He also played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s golden football era, assisting Dutch tactician Clemens Westerhof when the Super Eagles won the 1994 AFCON and qualified for their first FIFA World Cup.

As head coach, he guided the team to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu has assured the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) of his government’s support to ensure the advancement of its Open and Distance Learning (ODL) structure.

Tinubu gave the assurance on Saturday in Abuja at the 14th convocation of the university, where the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas and Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President, African Development Bank (AfDB), were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

While Abbas was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Business Administrator, Adesina bagged an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

The President who was represented by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, through Hajia, Rakiya Gambo, Director, Tertiary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, said NOUN would be strongly supported through Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund).

Tinubu said there was the need to advance technology in tertiary institutions to guarantee a robust learning especially for the ODL.

“The Federal Government under my leadership is committed to supporting education by leveraging information technology to enhance learning.

“Through strategic intervention, we are ensuring that education remains the key to our technological development.

“As such, the Federal Government through TetFund, is financing the fibre optic infrastructure at NOUN to provide seasless Internet access to substantial number of students at study centres across the geo-political zones of the country.

“This initiative harnesses the power of technology to improve access to education as faster as possible.

“This university has benefitted immensely from various government intervention provided through TetFund and we remain committed to ensuring that possible financial resources are consistently provided for the advancement of education through ODL in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olufemi Peters, said NOUN had continued to receive requests for the establishment of additional study centres from prominent individuals, community leaders and associations.

This, he said was a testament of the essential role the educational institution had played in serving the nation.

“To meet the demand of our expanding reach, we leverage cutting-edger Information and Communication Technology to enhance instructional delivery and improve learning outcomes.

“Our global learning culture is further enriched through innovative collaborations and partnerships with institutions such as the University of South Africa, the Open University, UK, the Open University of Tanzania and so on,” he said.

According to Peters, the 14th convocation was another opportunity for NOUN to celebrate the academic achievements of its students, out of which 17,420 graduated, comprising of 10,967 undergraduates and 6,413 postgraduate students.

The Pro-Chancellor of the University, Malam Isa Yuguda, had earlier urged the Federal Government to incorporate NOUN graduates into its National Youth Service Corps programme, to encourage more youths to enrol in the ODL structure.

Yuguda also appealed to the government to allow the admission of NOUN Law graduates into the Law School, to give room for more student to enrolment into the University Law Faculty. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Stakeholders advocate inclusive opportunities for children with special needs

Stakeholders advocate inclusive opportunities for children with special needs

Child right advocates, educators and caregivers have called for inclusive opportunities for children living with autism and other special needs to enable them achieve their full potential and contribute to society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the stakeholders made the call at a “Meet and Greet’ event in Abuja.

It was an occasion to celebrate Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a 15-year-old Nigerian autistic artist who recently broke the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the Largest Painting, as the latest world’s largest art canvas by an individual.

Tagbo-Okeke, had on April 2, unveiled the awe-inspiring canvas titled: “Impossibility is a Myth,” measuring 12,303 square meters, surpassing a previous 9,652 square meter record held by Emad Salehi.

The event tagged “The Back-Story”, brought together representatives of civil society groups, artistes, stakeholders in the arts and culture sector and friends and family of the ace artist.

According to the stakeholders, while Tagbo-Okeke is being celebrated for his ingenuity and exceptional feat in arts, there is need to reflect on the challenges children with special needs face in Nigeria.

Mohammad Sulaiman, President, Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), said the association was offering equal opportunities for talented young artistes to thrive irrespective of their background.

He, however, lamented that both government and relevant institutions have not realised the place of the artists in nation building, hence they provide little or no support for them.

“I would want to say that this actually marks the beginning of a very eventful period in Nigeria’s art life.

However, what Nigeria has not done, unfortunately, is that it has not been deliberate about looking at arts.

“The government must be very deliberate especially in these unique areas that are beginning to make impact, like autistic ones, and put funds into those areas,” he said.

Helen Neete, an Art Instructor, said many Nigerians still have little or no knowledge of the Autism spectrum, and therefore have a polarised view of autistic children.

“I believe that these individuals are specially touched by God, and I don’t think they have special needs.

“I think they have special abilities and each of them has his own form of expression; for some, it’s music, for others, it’s writing, and then those in visual art.

“One of the reasons why individuals on the spectrum are pushed aside is the lack of sensitisation and awareness in our society.

“Nobody goes into motherhood or parenthood thinking that they will have a child on the spectrum, and many people don’t even ask if this happens to me, what do I do?

“So, when you are just faced with this individual, and you don’t know what to do, so the first thing to do is that we as a society we have to educate ourselves,” she said.

Also, the mother of the young artist, Dr Sylvia Tagbo-Okeke, said children with special needs require individualised care, attention, and accommodations for them to feel included and motivated to manifest their God-given talents.

According to her, the journey of her son to stardom was that of resilience, determination and sacrifices by the family.

She, therefore, called on parents with autistic children not to give up, adding that society, especially in the Nigerian setting, needs to be more empathetic and understanding with children who have special needs.

“For parents that have special needs children, I always tell them never to give up on their child or lose hope.

“No matter how bad, if you keep at it, if you are patient, if you show love, at least they will be able to move from a point A point B and to a point C.

“You will deal with stigmatisation, discrimination and with people that do not have empathy, because in this society, you have the good, the bad, and the ugly.

“For us as a family, we have met some good people as well that have encouraged us, and then we have met some very bad ones that have made us feel very bad.

“But what we decided that we are not going to dwell on those bad, because we have a motto that autism is not a tragedy, ignorance is,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Benue Investment and Property Ltd (BIPC) has received 20 electric/solar cars to launch its modern taxi service in Makurdi, Gboko and Otukpo towns.

The Managing Director of BIPC, Mr Raymond Asemakaha, while receiving the cars, said the development would reduce costs and allow citizens of the state to have value for their money as well as create jobs for youths.

He said that the company is targeting about 100 of the cars for taxi services.

“This initiative aims to provide efficient and cost-effective transportation, create jobs for local youth, and offer citizens better value for their money by reducing emissions contributing to a cleaner environment.

“The cars are zero-emission cars and are eco-friendly, have a control system and a geofencing technology that can show the location and an in-built CCTV to track movement, monitor and ensure security of passengers.

“We are going to have an assembling and charging plant at our BIPC mergemax (CNG/Petrol Station) beside the head office.

“All the parts are going to be there for regular and routine maintenance, and a single charge is going to cover 500 kilometres,” Asemakaha said.

According to him, a mobile app is being developed to allow commuters to book online and ensure seamless services 24 hours.

He lamented the increasing cost of transportation in Makurdi, noting that the initiative is part of the government’s deliberate efforts to crash prices of transportation.

Asemakaha said the Benue Green Wheels initiative marks a vital step forward in promoting sustainable transport solutions and improving the quality of life for Benue residents to foster inclusive governance policy of the government. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Foundation offers free artificial limbs to children in Benin

Foundation offers free artificial limbs to children in Benin

The Irede Foundation, on Saturday, embarked on an awareness walk in Benin City to promote access to free prosthetic limbs for children, decrying the poor response it had so far received.

The outreach tagged “Out on a Limb 2025”, took place on the Oluku axis of the city and attracted volunteers, donors, and advocates.

Mr Peter Onyekwuo, Lead Advocate of the foundation’s Out on a Limb in Benin, said the project targeted children aged 0 to 18 who were in need of prosthetic limbs but could not afford them.

“This year’s theme is ‘Full Access, No Cap’, meaning there’s no limitation for any child,” Onyekwuo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during the walk.

According to him, the loss of a limb should not stop any child from going to school or pursuing their dreams.

“It must not be a hindrance,” he stressed, noting that the event was part of a global movement taking place simultaneously in 60 locations including the U.S, Dubai, and Dublin.

“This is the 12th edition of Out on a Limb. In Benin, it’s either the second or third time we’re holding it,” he explained.

Onyekwuo said that in spite of the previous campaigns by the foundation, response had been poor.

“I’ve not seen any child referred yet. When I was in Ebonyi and Lokoja, children got limbs.

“But here in Benin, we’re still waiting. That’s why we keep advocating,” he added.

The foundation’s lead advocate said an artificial limb costs over N1.5 million in hospitals, but Irede Foundation offers it free.

He asserted that the foundation hoped to reach at least 200 children across Nigeria through the support of donors and corporate sponsors in 2025.

Onyekwuo acknowledged support from companies like UPS and encouraged individuals to donate and help children live full lives.

“We want children in Benin to benefit too. Let one get it and become a testimony for others,” Onyekwuo urged. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Stakeholders call for qualitative NYSC, reject service year extension

Stakeholders call for qualitative NYSC, reject service year extension

427 total views today

By Tunde Ajayi and Ibukun Emiola

The Federal Government (FG) has been advised to improve the quality of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme instead of extending the service year to two.

A cross section of corps members, parents and education stakeholders advised in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Saturday.

The respondents unanimously opposed the suggestion of extension of the service year, describing it as a waste of time.

According to them, with relevant skills acquisition and start-up capital, participants will become self-reliant after their one-year national service.

A corps member, Andrew Chukwuma, said it was enough that graduates of public tertiary institutions had spent more years than necessary studying due to incessant strikes by various education unions.

According to him, the service year extension will also add to the challenges of getting jobs in companies with age limits set on job positions.

Similarly, a parent, Mrs Evelyn Falola, urged the government to consider some graduates who must first go for an internship before launching into their career.

She noted that the extension would be an additional burden for such graduates.

“We want the government to focus on empowering corps members right from the orientation camp.

“The government should also create an enabling environment that will encourage youths to be employers rather than job seekers,” Falola said.

Meanwhile, a policy analyst, Mr Yemi Osanyin, reiterated the need for Nigeria to strengthen its education sector in terms of quality and employability of graduates rather than the extension.

Osanyin stated that by ensuring the quality of education, graduates would not need to depend on whatever the extension of service would offer, if ever there was any.

He noted that there were already some issues regarding the one-year service, making some parents sceptical about their wards’ participation.

He said corps members’ posting to threatened and insecure places was enough concern to make parents and stakeholders object to the extension plan.

He wondered what the extension would address when some people were already calling for the scrapping of the scheme.

“Is it that value can only come after one year of NYSC or in two years, whereby one year should be used in their primary places of assignment and another year for the vocational skills?

“Is the minister looking at it from the number of unemployed graduates for those two years?

“If it is in that case, is the NYSC vocational training sufficient to adequately equip the graduates such that they won’t need to look for white collar jobs afterwards?

“These are some of the questions begging for answers,” he said.

Osanyin said strengthening the education sector would address many issues, such as the unemployment of Nigerian graduates.

He advised that issues of education funding, quality teachers, training and re-training, and developing 21st-century compliant curricula should be put on the front burner.

Osanyin noted that the two-year extension would not translate into the graduates becoming more competitive than their counterparts in other climes.

NAN recalls that the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, had on April 4, recommended the extension of the scheme and the expansion of its content. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
