Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has emphasised the role of public-private sector partnerships in driving accelerated and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.

He made the remark at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) Public Lecture and Founders’ Forum held at the Lagos Business School on Thursday.

The event, which marked the official launch of the 30th anniversary of the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) has the theme: ‘In the National Interest: Reflecting on the Past, Reimagining the Future”.

Sanwo-Olu said it was imperative that the public sector improved on its synergy with various actors pursuing a collective agenda of service for the citizens.

The governor highlighted the significant role the NESG plays in bringing together public and private sector leaders in the country in an ongoing dialogue to shape, influence and create a thriving competitive and successful economy.

“We’re not where we should be and we must continue to set goals to inspire ourselves to do better as a nation

“We may not always achieve our targets for our vision timelines, but that should not be an excuse for not trying,” he said.

He commended the NESG for its various interventions such as the flagship annual summit, roundtable and sectorial policy commissions, technical support work and policy innovation centre.

He, however, urged NESG to explore ways of deepening linkage between policy work and public consciousness that allows engagement with the citizenry.

Delivering the lecture, Mrs Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, Managing Partner, Compliance Professionals PLC, said that while there had been significant economic changes, more needed to be done to ensure accelerated economic growth.

Omoigui-Okauru said that there was need to build inclusive policies that reflect the realities of the nation rather than imposing replicas of other countries.

“In 30 years, we may have made some progress, but we can’t say we have radically transformed Nigeria.

“As we reflect on the NESG, there’s still a lot to be done in bridging the rural-urban divide and have an inclusive agenda.

“We see our journey as work in progress. We need to determine the parameters that would drive our success and put policies in place  to move us in the direction where we need to be.

“It is important for us to move away from self interest, think of ways to use technology and other frameworks to collectively achieve the Nigeria of our dreams,” she said.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Mr Niyi Yusuf, Chairman, NESG, said the 30th Summit reaffirmed  the essentiality of public-private partnerships in tackling complex economic realities.

Yusuf, however, said that the journey to embracing market mechanisms has not been without its challenges.

He reiterated unwavering commitment in driving reforms through rigorous research, economic and social programmes, and inclusive summits, all aimed at shaping the socio-economic development of our nation.

“Thirty years ago, at a critical juncture in our nation’s history, the NES was born out of a necessity when the winds of economic challenges blew fiercely, necessitating a platform for robust public-private dialogue.

“Since our inaugural summit in 1993, the NES has been a progressive economic discourse rooted deeply in collaborative efforts between government leaders and private sector visionaries.

“Each Summit has crafted policies and strategies essential for removing barriers to competitiveness, growth, and inclusive development.

“Therefore, in commemorating this 30th anniversary, it is essential to assess and discuss the role of this public-private dialogue platform in Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape to provide us insights for future engagements,” he said.

The chairman assured collaborative efforts with the three arms of federal and subnational governments and private sector communities to propel Nigeria towards a more resilient, inclusive and prosperous future.

Dr Pascal Dozie, Chairman, NESG Advisory Board, listed political, economic, education and environment sectors as pathways to reimagining Nigeria’s future

Dozie, also pioneer Chairman of NESG Board of Directors, was represented by Mr Frank Aigbogun, Chief Executive Officer of BusinessDay.

He charged NESG to adopt new strategies in providing collaborative leadership in seeking answers to the following crucial questions.

“How do we strengthen democratic institutions and rule of law, foster culture of inclusiveness and representation?

“How do we promote transparency and accountability in governance and inculcate the culture of consequences for bad behaviour in every sphere of life?

“In economic reimagining, how do we diversify Nigeria’s economy, reduce dependence on oil, foster a business friendly environment and develop the much needed infrastructure base in a coordinated nationwide approach?

“How do we repurpose the educational system to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, encourage technology entrepreneurship and innovation and address unemployment?

“For the environment, how can we develop sustainable agriculture and food security, promote sustainable practices, renewable energy and eco tourism?

“It is imperative that the NESG community leads from the front in not only providing actionable answers to these questions but also making sacrifices to ensure they are implemented,” he said.

Similarly, Chief Executive Officer of NESG, Dr Tayo Aduloju, said that strong institutions, political will, accountability by all stakeholders and the willingness for the government to allow private sector to drive growth were factors needed for a successful economic development.

“The challenge for us today is how to drive the country forward over the next 30 years in a way that is not just growth but growth that creates jobs and opportunities for everyone and no one is left behind.

“We are dealing with a country that is going through macro-economic volatility and instability.

“So, the lessons here at the forum are deep reflections of what should change in our approach, a stronger priority on execution, a deeper commitment on accountability of government systems to deliver and how economic barometers impact the ordinary man on the street.

“Our resilience to hold government accountable, to keep insisting that there must be an economy that works for all Nigerians, rule of law, an environment in which free enterprise is practiced, is what we must continue to fight for,” he added.  (NAN)

Ekiti Government has directed the kingmakers of Osi-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state to ratify the selection of Prince Stephen Alabi as the valid nominee for Olosi stool.

The Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye, gave the directive on Thursday, at a meeting with stakeholders, including the kingmakers and representatives of Arubiojo Ruling House in her office in Ado-Ekiti.

Afuye said Prince Alabi’s ratification became expedient, having been validly nominated by Arubiojo Ruling House of Osi-Ekiti for the exalted seat as the sole candidate, with name forwarded to the kingmakers in line with tradition.

She said that after the stool became vacant, following the demise of Oba Oladiran Agunbiade on Aug. 5, 2021, the Arubiojo Ruling House was contacted by the government to fill the vacant stool.

She gave the kingmakers up till Monday, May 6, to write an appointment letter to the nominee and forward same to government for approval.

The deputy governor, however, expressed displeased with the way the kingmakers were allegedly manipulating and foot dragging on the process, saying it might erode the confidence the people had in their personalities.

Particularly, she berated the process leading to the forwarding of the name of one Prince Femi Adewumi as the validly selected nominee to the Local Government for approval.

“Even when he was neither voted for nor nominated by the ruling house.

“The ruling house had done the due diligence by nominating someone. If they want only one nominee, nobody should force them to add more, since the process was transparent from the beginning.

“Gov. Biodun Oyebanji places respect for traditional institution and traditional rulers are benefiting from this government because of the partnership between them and the government.

“We don’t want your town to lag behind, hence appealing to other aspirants to join hands with the stakeholders in moving the town forward.

“They should cooperate with the nominee in the task of building a new Osi-Ekiti that will benefit all and Sundry,”the deputy governor said.

Shareholders of Odu’a Investment Company Ltd.(OICL) on Thursday approved the total dividend of N428 million declared by the company for the year ended Dec. 31, 2023.

They gave the approval at the company’s 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM), held in Lagos.

They also approved other resolutions and the company’s financial statements for the financial year ended 2023.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Odu’a group, owned by the government of the Western States of Nigeria, is a strategic investment and asset management firm founded in 1976.

The company was established to hold and manage the industrial and commercial assets of companies.

It has substantial investments in real estate, energy, hospitality, information technology, printing and publishing, equipment leasing, food and beverages, among others.

The total dividend would be shared equally among the six states that have equal equities in the company.

In his address, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, Group Chairman, Odu’a Investment, said that it was the 10th consecutive year that the company would be paying dividends to its shareholders.

On the company’s financials for the year under review, Ashiru stated that the firm recorded seven per cent growth in its operating revenue from N3.68 billion in 2022 to N3.95 billion in 2023.

Ashiru noted that in spite of the economic headwinds of 2023, the company was able to post an impressive performance, as its Profit Before Tax(PBT) grew by 62 per cent to N1.772 billion in 2023, from N1.092 billion recorded in 2022.

He expressed satisfaction with improved collaboration and synergy within the group and leveraging shared services, cross selling, joint marketing and astute business innovation.

He noted that Odu’a Investment was translating the timeless vision of the founding fathers of the company into reality by the implementation of the group’s five-year strategic plan.

Ashiru explained that the strategic plan aimed to create and revive businesses and assets to deliver continuous growth and value to shareholders and stakeholders.

According to him, notable events in the year under review included the commissioning of the Phase one of Westlink Iconic Villa, Alakia, Ibadan, comprising 67 residential units of three-bedroom apartments, four-bedroom and five-bedroom duplexes.

” It also involves the launching of the Odua Investment Foundation and its flagship Educational Intervention Project, tagged: ’’Digital Education for Innovation and Economic Development (DEFINED).

” Odu’a Investment also secured its first ever Credit Rating in 2023 with Agusto & Co awarding it ‘’A’’ Rating with a stable outlook attributed to its deft management and good operating cashflows.”

Mr Adewale Raji, Group Managing Director/CEO of Odu’a Investment, appreciated the shareholders for the opportunity given to him to serve the company for two successive terms, lasting 10 years.

Raji said with the support of the shareholders, a new corporate governance framework that depoliticised operations, appointments and management of the firm was enthroned.

He stated that the company in last 10 years witnessed repositioning that was driven by her SRC (Sweat, Revive & Create)- 2025 Strategy to be a lean non-operating investment holding company focused on eight sectors.

He listed the sectors as: real estate, hospitality, financial services, agriculture, energy/power, ICT/ digital, healthcare/pharmaceuticals and logistics/e-commerce.

“It is such focus on ‘’Sweating’’ that necessitated the consolidation of the entire group real estate portfolio under our Wemabod Ltd., subsidiary.

“This led to the massive redevelopment either through own resources or joint venture partnerships of our real estate portfolio to optimise yield and return.

“‘’Revive’’ is manifesting in our renovation and redevelopment of Premier Hotel at Ibadan with significant progress made in both the existing building and new developments on the site with phased re-opening starting in half year of 2025.

“ Create’’ reflects in the significant step up in our BITA Exploration and Production Ltd., marginal field (PPL 249) funding thrust to implement the Field Development Plan with our partner, Pioneer Global Energy Resources.

“The company expects that once these funding and regulatory requirements are met, it will be able to achieve ‘’First Oil within the first quarter of 2025.

“ All these translated to remarkable success in its financial performance, corporate governance, risk management, and asset optimisation across its chosen sectors,” he said.

Raji expressed confidence that the incoming group managing director of the company, Mr Abdulrahman Yinusa, would deliver on the ongoing redevelopment of the company’s hotels and the group’s new pipeline of premium residential and commercial projects.

He assured that the new managing director would also secure viable joint venture partnerships for the agriculture portfolio and achieve ‘’First Oil‘’, in the implementation of the field development plan of BITA marginal field.

According to him, Yinusa would facilitate the company’s mainstream participation in the turnaround of the power sector.

Raji expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu administration’s pursuit of a market-driven approach to resolving underlying problems of the economy would attract long-term investments into the country to fund infrastructure and social services.

He said that these include roads, rail, power, healthcare, and education, among others, that would translate into sustainable economic and human capital development.

Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, Secretary to Oyo State Government, commended the board of OICL for piloting the affair of the organisation to an enviable height.

Adeyemo said, worthy of note was the consistency the organisation had maintained in remitting annual dividend for shareholders in the last 10 years.

Also, Mr Olatokunbo Joseph, Secretary to Ogun State Government, said, “I’m very proud to see OICL manifest as a big company.

” I feel everyone should give an applause to the directors for giving us a fair financial analysis.

“ I enjoin everyone to stay focused on what we are set to do,” Joseph said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) in collaboration with other Civil Society groups have called for holistic  support for anti-corruption agencies in the country to end corruption.

They said this at a news conference to discuss the state of corruption and malicious attacks on Anti Corruption institutions in Nigeria both at the national and sub national levels on Thursday in Abuja.

Mr Anwal Musa, the Executive Director, CISLAC, said there was the need to support the efforts of anti corruption agencies at grassroot and national level so that Nigeria could  have peace.

“We have observed with great concern, the malicious attacks and deliberate efforts to blackmail anti-corruption agencies through sponsorship influencers, incentivised opinion publications in some national dailies.

“Online and electronic platforms, all targeted at discouraging anti-corruption efforts and shielding the kleptocrats from thorough investigation.

“The pattern is clear, there is an unfolding plot of surreptitious moves to backpedal on the progress made by anti-corruption progress.

“Procurement of political appointments by some suspected or investigated looters who are serving under the current administration as ministers, legislators, or occupying leadership positions of the ruling party,” he said.
Musa added: “Has exposed anti-corruption work to serious setback and deliberate sabotage that cripple the efficiency of the anti-corruption agencies.

“So the fight against corruption is for all of us, it is for all Nigerians because the consequences has led us to the situation we have found our selves today.”

Prof. Jubril Ibrahim, Senior Partner, Centre for Democracy and Development said corruption in the country had reached an alarming stage.

Ibrahim said that the judiciary that was supposed to checkmate corruption had been bought over by enablers of corruption and increased corruption through bribery of judges.

“There has been consented war by corrupt people  to make sure that anti corruption agencies are unable to prosecute corrupt individuals and preventing such institutions from carrying out their mandate.

“We feel if we allow this destruction of the Nigerian state to continue we will not have a country and the risk is that the present tragedy of anarchy will prevail.

“We must stop this level of corruption form continuing to grow if we must survive as a country,” he said.

The Country  Director, Accountability Lab Nigeria, Mr Odeh Friday, said there was need to set up ethics and integrity department in every MDA to build public  trust.

He also called for the implementation of the Whistle Blowing Act to protect whistle blowers from been attacked by those they expose.

Mr Samson Itodo, Executive Director, Yiaga Africa, said upholding the rule of law was key to fighting corruption.

“Attacks on institutions that have the mandate of defending our democracy should not be encouraged,  it is reprehensible, unacceptable .

“When we attack these institutions especially when they act to advance public interest we are undermining trust and the rule of law,” he said.

The Convener, Good Governance (GGT) Team, Mr Tunde Salman said that the fight against corruption should be citizen driven and not government driven.

Salman said there was need to capacitate those agencies of government  that have the mandate to investigate corruption, adding that special attention should be given to them and technology should be deployed to reduce human interference.

The CSOs recommended that the National Judicial Council must diligently monitor its members and promptly remove any corrupt judicial officer found to be compromising the judicial system.

“This requires holding politicians accountable for their actions and inactions, strengthening institutions to combat corruption, and ensuring that the allocation of resources is done in a fair and equitable manner.

“We urge the ruling All-Progressive Party (APC) and other political parties to take decisive action in purging its ranks by denouncing and breaking support with their members who are currently being investigated by anti-corruption agencies.

“Adequate resource allocation to the anti-corruption agencies has become imperative to uphold their independence and enhance efficiency in the anti-corruption process.

“We urge I-G to promptly reinstate the police personnel withdrawn from the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission, to facilitate the effective execution of Commission’s duties,” they said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the news conference was jointly endorsed by 50 civil society organisations supporting anti corruption and Good Governance in Nigeria.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa has inaugurated the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), calling on the National Assembly to urgently amend the 2004 ARCON Act.

At the Inauguration of the Re-constituted Council on Thursday in Abuja, the minister said that the Act, which mandates ARCON to determine the standards of knowledge and skills necessary to practice, is obsolete.

According to him, the 2004 Act, heralded by Decree Number 10 of 1969, which empowers the Council to raise practice standards from time to time as circumstances may permit, has not been adhered to.

“The Architects Registration Council of Nigeria Act 2004 being a statute created by the National Assembly needs immediate and urgent review and update by way of Amendment.

“The Act needs a surgical review to align its mandate with the realities of today and beyond.

“The Ministry under my watch will encourage this Council to urgently begin work on this amendment. We should aim to remove all areas of ambiguities.

” We should incorporate the right to exist and function with the common objective of promoting the profession,” he said.

The Minister drew the attention of the Council to the recurring phenomenon of building collapse in the country, leading to loss of lives, and waste of resources.

According to him, recurrent building collapse had brought shame to the profession and the housing sector.

“As we inaugurate the ARCON Council today, I want to specifically charge the members to ensure that there is peace in the house of Architecture in Nigeria.

“We must demonstrate the ability to organise ourselves. We must show that we can lead the industry. This must be evident in the way our organisations conduct themselves,” he said

Dangiwa recalled that the Council was created as a policy making organ of government to help in promoting the development and growth of the Architectural profession in the country.

He added that ARCON was created because the Government recognised the need to regulate and maintain standards in the built environment, a major driver of economic growth.

The Minister, therefore, tasked ARCON on accountability and transparency through the implementation of initiatives that would enhance good governance in the built environment.

He charged the Council to ensure that registered architects uphold ethical conduct and integrity.

He also urged them to be alive to the expectations of the Architectural profession and contribute meaningfully towards policies that would promote and enshrine standards and quality in the housing sector.

Responding, Umar Murnai-Saulawa, the ARCON Registrar, commended the Minister for inaugurating the Council adding that it was long overdue.

Murnai-Saulawa urged the members to work in peace and unity for the progress and improvement of the architectural profession in Nigeria,

“We have a lot to do because we have lost a lot of ground because of the problems we have been having all along .

“I hope this inauguration will bring a stop to the problems we have had,” he said.

The Registrar also charged members to uphold the responsibilities and tenets of the Council which included training and improvement of the profession.(NAN)

NAN, VON, NTA, FRCN to begin major sports coverage, says Information Minister

NAN, VON, NTA, FRCN to begin major sports coverage, says Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, says, the four major media organisations under his ministry would soon begin holistic coverage of major sporting activities in the country.

The media organisations, according to the Minister includes: News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), Nigerian Television of Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

Idris stated this when the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Enoh and his management team paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Abuja.

The Minister, who appreciated Enoh for his passion, determination, zeal and dexterity to move the sports sector, assured him of the ministry’s collaboration.

“Ministry of Information and National Orientation houses the major public information platforms. We have NAN which is one of the biggest in Africa and NTA which also has the widest reach in Africa.

“We also have FRCN which is one of the biggest in the whole of African continent and VON that has the responsibility of projecting Nigeria ‘s image to other parts of the world and broadcast in eight foreign and local languages.

“So, you cannot have a better Ministry to collaborate with in terms of projection of sports development than this ministry.
“I am happy and glad that you have seen this clearly and have taken it up.

“I want to assure you that in us, in this ministry, you have found a worthy partner to pursue your course so that sports can be taken to the highest realm in this country,” he said.

Idris expressed the need to set up a committee among both ministries in order to explore areas of collaboration.

“We will invite all heads of public broadcast platforms and give a marching order for sports coverage and development.

“Whatever your ministry is getting in terms of coverage and projection, we will double that effort and make sure that you succeed,” Idris said.

The Minister further underscored the unity, national integration and cohesion that sports usually bring to all Nigerians, especially when the national teams were playing against other countries.

“Sports can be used as a vehicle for turning this country to where our founding fathers left it for us.

“So, we want to thank you for this visit, and assure you that we will partner with you in sports development.”

Speaking earlier, Enoh said the purpose of the visit was to seek and request for media support for sports development as it related to coverage of sports activities like Sports festivals, Football League and others.

Enoh further explained that the potential of sports to bond and enhance unity could not be overemphasised.

He noted that the African Cup of Nation provided the platform for unity in Nigeria, that he wished the competition was hosted daily.

“However, there are some of our sports events that happens every year or biannually like National Sports Festival in Ogun and another event in Asaba.

“Without coverage of these games, we will not be able to encourage mass participation.

“The Media, especially, the television and radio are so important. Without media, we will continue to make efforts but may not get any results.

“We need collaboration. There is need for the two ministries to join forces to be in sync for the development of sports in Nigeria.

“We need to have a work plan for coverage of national games, football leagues and President Federation Cup.

“My expectation is that, the Directors-General of NTA, FRCN and others should work with directors in the Ministry of Sports Development, have an interface to have sports coverage on short and long term basis, “Enoh said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The House of Representatives has commended the management of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for embracing the use of renewable energy in its operations.

The members of House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Privileges gave the commendation during their oversight visit to NAN headquarters Abuja on Thursday.

Chairman of the committee, Rep. Olusola  Fatoba, who led the members of the committee, said he was impressed with the ingenuity of the management of the agency led by Malam Muhammed Ali to install solar system for the daily operations of the agency.

“We are happy that your management could come up with this measure to install solar system here and this will help save a lot of cost in the running of the agency.

“In some government agencies, humongous amounts are quoted as expenses on diesel alone and I think they can borrow a leaf from the present management of NAN to save cost for government,’’ he said.

Fatoba said that his committee observed from the document presented by the management that the agency did not receive enough budgetary provision given the enormous duties it performed.

“NAN is the `official voice of Nigeria’ and performs enormous duties to ensure that the image of the nation is well managed.

“In spite of this enormous duties, what the agency receive as budget is very small when compared with other government organisations that do less, yet they get huge budgets that they even force themselves to spend,’’ he said.

The visiting lawmakers advised the agency on the need to ensure that they liaised with the committee to ensure that challenges facing the agency were looked into, as well as adhere strictly to the budgetary provisions.

Other members of the committee were; Reps. Felix Nwueke (Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency-Rivers), Taofeek Ajilesoro (Ife Federal Constituency-Osun), Rabiu Kambe (Arewa /Dandi Federal Constituency–Kebbi) and Zakaria Nyampa (Madagali/Michika Federal Constituency of Adamawa.

Earlier the managing Director of NAN, Malam Muhammed said his six months administration had done a lot to reposition the agency.

He said that some issues of major concerns were that of the advancement in digital technology with the attendant competitions from other media players.

Muhammed said that the agency was currently initiating some innovations to ensure it remained among key players in the industry.

He thanked the committee members for the visit and assured it that the management was open for collaboration with the lawmakers to position NAN as the lead news agency in not only Africa, but globally. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Mrs Titilope Gbadamosi, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Youth Initiatives, and PROMAD Foundation have harped on the need for technological empowerment of youths to boost their participation in governance.

They made the call on Thursday in Abuja at the 2024 close-out ceremony of the Accelerating Youth Participation in Governance (AYPG2024) Fellowship.

The fellowship’s theme is “Rethinking Youth Participation in Governance in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by PROMAD Foundation and supported by LEAP-Africa and the Nigerian Youth Future Fund( NYFF).

Gbadamosi said that Nigerian youths in the country and those in diaspora had common objective of improving the state of the country and needed to leverage technology to achieve the feat.

“The driving force behind the youths abroad is same for the youths in the country; regardless of locations we have a common tie that bonds us by heart.

“Those who are abroad and those who are in Nigeria, we all want a better Nigeria and we are all working towards that.

“Especially the young people who are very active in governance, just as those who are here are passionate about Nigeria.

“Those who are abroad are equally passionate about Nigeria, because there is no place like home,” she said.

Gbadamosi, while congratulating the successful fellows, urged them to downscale the knowledge gained and to take up the front seats on matters of leadership, political participation and governance.

She added that President Tinubu was working to ensure more inclusion and representation of youths in his government.

According to her, President Tinubu strongly believes Nigeria can only be built by the fire and steam of young people’s participation.

This, she said, was why the administration had prioritised the youths more than any other government and the President was fulfilling his campaign manifesto.

Mr Daisi Omokungbe, the Executive Director of PROMAD, said that the AYPG2024 was to enhance youth’s understanding on the use of Artificial Intelligence and its impacts in leadership, political participation and governance.

“AI is very important from the aspect of the youth who are agents and enablers of new technology and that is why we took this fellowship from this aspect.

“What we have done today is that we have brought 18 young leaders from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory and we have trained them on participation in governance.

“The training and the insight of the keynote speaker and the panelist today has also shown how we can harness technology in terms of data, analysing fake news and for better informed decisions making,” he said.

Mrs Maimuna Sani, the Representative of the Nigeria Youth Future Fund (NYFF), congratulated the foundation for the initiative to train and coach youths on the importance of their participation in governance.

According to her, the AYPG2024 fellowship underscored our commitment to strengthen youth participation in governance, to activate, amplify and mainstream youths’ voices into policies conversations.

“I urge you all to apply the knowledge gained from this fellowship, to hold and engage your elected policy makers and representatives to ensure that you are included in government plans, policies and programmes,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other speakers at the event were Mr Hamzat Lawal, Executive Director of CODE, and Mr Kole Shettima, Country Director of MacArthur Foundation.

Others are Mr Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, and Dr J. K. Naiyeju, former Accountant General of the Federation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government has inaugurated a N420million 625metres canal constructed by the National-Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) in Koton Karfe, Kogi.

Sen. George Akume, Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), inaugurated the project on Thursday in Koton Karfe, with a call on the people to ensure its maintenance.

Akume, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Simon Tyungu, said that the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project stands as a testament to President Bola Tinubu’s resolve to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

He commended the management team of N-HYPPADEC, especially the  Managing Director, Alh. Abubakar Yelwa, for their tireless efforts in ensuring the successful completion of the project, which began last year.

The SGF said: “With the inauguration of this critical infrastructure, and the commitment of the commission to replicate efforts like this in other flood-prone communities, we can look forward to a future where the specter of devastating floods no longer looms over our communities.

“Nevertheless, the completion of this project is just the beginning of our journey towards a safer and more secure future.

“It is incumbent upon each and every member of this community to actively participate in the maintenance and upkeep of this infrastructure.

“I urge all community and traditional leaders here present, as well as youth organisations, to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring that the flood control measures remain effective and operational.”

Earlier, Alh. Abubakar Yelwa,  Managing Director, N-HYPPADEC, said that the canal spans a total length of 625metres, comprised of various components and an integrated line stretching 499.5 metres, complemented by an earth drain of 125.5 metres.

“Intersecting those drains are four double cell culverts, strategically placed to facilitate water flow toward preventing flood in communities,” he said.

The managing director pointed out that the project was acomprehensive flood control solution to address the recurrent floods plaguing Koton Karfe.

He said that through meticulous assessment and in-depth analysis, the commission identified the root cause of the flooding, – unchecked flow of water from hills upstream, exacerbated by natural topographical features.

In his remarks, Gov. Usman Ododo thanked the Federal Government and N-HYPPADEC for the project, which said would go along way in preserving the lives and property of members of the community.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Joel Oyibo, said that the state government had embarked on several erosion measures in some local government areas as part of efforts to address the devastating effects of floods across the state.

Ododo also urged members of the community to ensure that maintain and protect all infrastructures provided by government and other well meaning organisations.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Koton Karfe, Dr Saidu Salihu, the Ohimege-Igu appreciated the Federal Government and N-HYPPADEC for the intervention that has brought relief to his subjects from fear of impending flood.

The traditional ruler gave assurances the people would work to ensure the preservation of the canal.

He, however, appealed for the construction of similar canal in the northern end of the community to address the cases of flood in that axis.

“This is because, leaving the northern part will spell doom for this canal down south of our community. We plead for consideration of this impending danger, ” he said . (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
