The Federal Government has inaugurated the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Innovation Park in Ogun.

Speaking during the inauguration, on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, noted that the innovation park mattered so deeply for economic growth.

Tijani said the park was a vital part of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda, which placed digital innovation, youth empowerment and inclusive economic growth at the heart of Nigeria’s journey to a one trillion-dollar economy.

He stated that the ministry had set out to make Nigeria a global leader in digital infrastructure, talent development and innovation.

According to the minister, the park would serve as a platform for youth empowerment and a place where skills meet opportunity.

“A launchpad for innovation where ideas become ventures and ventures become industries. A catalyst for community transformation, especially for the adjoining neighbourhoods.

“This can now evolve into one of Africa’s next great tech clusters. Abeokuta has everything it needs to compete, not just with Lagos, but with Kigali, Accra and Nairobi.

“What we need now, is to unlock and connect the dots,” he said.

Tijani explained that the nation was building the foundation fibre optics, AI frameworks, tech talent pipelines and smart regulation, not just for Lagos or Abuja, but for every part of the country.

He, however, described Abeokuta as a city rich in history, culture and resilience with a growing network of academic institutions and eager minds waiting to be nurtured.

The minister commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun for investing wisely in roads, tourism, infrastructure and digital future.

“When we invest strategically; when we collaborate across tiers and when we centre innovation as a tool for inclusion, we do more than build structures; we build nations,” he said.

In his remarks, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, noted that the project marked progress in the delivery of a tangible achievement of President Tinubu’s administration.

He said that the park would serve as a vital component of the broader agenda to accelerate Information Communication Technology (ICT) innovation, strengthen research capabilities and drive the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

“Technology today is one of the most powerful drivers of economic transformation. For an emerging economy like ours, it remains one of our greatest hopes for leapfrogging development.

“This is why we must create the right environment for it to thrive.

“The concept behind the Digital Industrial Park is rooted in our vision to promote innovation and digital entrepreneurship in the ICT sector, and to support research and development.

“In addition to what we have here in Abeokuta, the commission is currently implementing three other Digital Industrial Parks (DIP) in Kano, Borno and Enugu States.

“These parks are equipped with computer labs, smart networking systems, collaborative workspaces and multipurpose halls.

“They have been designed to include hands-on practice laboratories for training and skills development,” he said.

In his remarks, Gov. Abiodun said the event marked another significant milestone in the journey of the state toward becoming a leading hub for technology, innovation and digital transformation in Nigeria.

“This digital innovation park means progress; a catalyst for economic growth and a testament to the state government’s commitment to harnessing technology for the collective good of the people,” he said.

The Adamawa Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture Development, in collaboration with Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, has commenced training of 120 farmers on modern livestock management and climate change.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that L-PRES is a six-year development project funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and the World Bank.

Mr Tijjani Marksha, Commissioner for Livestock and Aquaculture Development, made this known on Wednesday, in Yola during a training workshop on Production and Technology Adoption Survey and Analysis.

Marksha, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Malam Suleiman Mohammed, commended L-PRES for its impactful and transformative initiatives.

“L-PRES is doing excellently well, and we appreciate their efforts in training our farmers to enhance livestock productivity in the state.

“This is the eighth in a series of workshops held this year, as knowledge remains crucial to achieving sustainable development.” he said

The commissioner also acknowledged the support of Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri in ensuring the successful implementation of the project in the state.

Also speaking, the Adamawa State Project Coordinator L-PRES, Mr Alfa Secondee, said the initiative aims to improve livestock productivity across the state.

“Globally, knowledge is key to achieving any developmental strides.

“That is why it is important to train and retrain our farmers to meet the key performance indicators of the L-PRES project,” Secondee said.

He explained that participants would be trained on modern technologies, including the use of smartphones to monitor climate change and its impacts on livestock productivity.

According to him, of the 120 participants, 21 are Divisional Livestock Officers from each local government area, including personnel from livestock pasture development units and local farmers.

In his remarks, Dr Ibrahim Bayaso, the lead facilitator, said the training was designed to build farmers’ capacity in climate change adaptation, mitigation, and resilience strategies.

“It is important to note that livestock and agriculture contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through fertiliser use and animal waste.

“In Nigeria, we must embrace sustainable land management by applying technology in land clearing, planting, fertiliser application, and livestock handling,” he said.

Bayaso emphasised the need for farmers to transition from traditional grazing practices, which deplete animals’ energy and negatively impact milk production, soil, and vegetation.

He urged participants to adopt a change in mindset to enhance livestock productivity and environmental sustainability, through technology.

A participant, Mrs Glandu Sajo, Divisional Livestock Officer (DLO) for Fufore LGA, lauded L-PRES for the training, describing it as timely and impactful.

“We have learned a lot about climate change in relation to livestock production; this workshop has been life-changing and it will certainty improve our productivity,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

All Progressives Congress (APC) women have called on the leadership of the party to provide equal opportunities for women and men in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections.

Dr Mary Alile, APC National Women Leader, made the call when she received the FCT female aspirants from the six area councils of the FCT in her office on Wednesday in Abuja.

She said that the decision of women to contest for various positions in the upcoming FCT elections was a testament to the strength and determination of women to contribute to providing service to the people.

According to Alile, as the forthcoming chairmanship and councillors’ elections in FCT approaches, it is imperative to recognise the vital roles women play in the party and society.

“Women are not just key stakeholders; they are leaders, innovators and change-makers who can significantly contribute to our vision for a prosperous and inclusive FCT.

“We urge the APC leadership, especially in the FCT, to ensure that women are given equal opportunities to be flag bearers in these upcoming elections.”

The women leader said that it was essential to promote fair play and inclusivity, allowing talented and capable women to represent the party at all levels.

She said that supporting women candidates would inspire future generations and demonstrate dedication for a more equitable society.

Alile commended the courage of some women contesting in the elections, adding that the impact of female leadership in transforming lives, advocating for justice and fostering inclusive growth is obvious.

She urged the women to support one another, adding that “When one woman rises, we all rise.

“Encourage your fellow aspirants, share your experiences and collaborate to create a united front.”

She pledged her support for their aspirations and promised to work tirelessly to create an environment where women would feel empowered to lead without barriers.

Alile also promised to establish mentorship programmes, provide resources and advocate for policies that promote gender equality in leadership positions.

She commended President Bola Tinubu for believing in the potentials of women across Nigeria and for his unwavering commitment to empowering women since he took over the presidency.

Also speaking, the APC FCT Women Leader, Hajiya Salamatu Jibrin, commended Alile for championing the course of women nationally.

Earlier, a Councillorship aspirant, Rejoice Yakubu, at Kuduru Ward, Bwari Area Council, appreciated President Tinubu for his favourable disposition in the appointments of women in government.

Yakubu, however, appealed that women should be supported for the FCT elections to make their voices to be heard.

“We are pleading for more positions especially during the FCT elections for our voices to be heard this time around. We play key roles at the grassroots and help in stimulating economic activities in the communities.

“We have 62 wards in the FCT; however, it is not all the 62 wards that we are aspiring for, and it is just a few of them.

“So, we are pleading for your help as our mother and our mouthpiece, to speak on our behalf to the father of our nation, President Tinubu to look into this appeal and give us level playing grounds to compete with the male contestants,” she said.

A Chairmanship aspirant, Jennifer Nnamudi, from Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), said that women were not dragging seats with men, but are only seeking to uphold the 35 per cent affirmative action. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance stance against reckless drivers during and after the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, made this known on Wednesday at a Sallah rally in Abuja, organised to sensitise road users to safe driving habits.

Mohammed also warned that all traffic offenders would face prosecution.

The Corp Marshall emphasised that the FRSC would strictly enforce laws against speeding, overloading, drunk driving, and other disruptive behaviours behind the wheel.

He, however, expressed concern about the national image projected through poor road culture, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs.

He criticised the trend of overloading vehicles, describing it as dangerous and unacceptable.

“Three in front, six at the back. it doesn’t speak well of us.

“This time around, we are not leaving any stone unturned. Any recalcitrant driver that we catch is going to face prosecution.

“Our crash analysis shows that over 70 per cent of road traffic crashes annually are caused by speeding,” he said.

Mohammed also advised drivers and passengers to take responsibility for safety.

“Abuja is the heart of Nigeria. If our roads are chaotic here, it sends the wrong message to the world.

“When visitors arrive, the first thing they notice is our driving culture,” he stated.

Mohammed also warned against destructive behaviours such as using phones, watching inappropriate content, or eating while driving.

“We don’t condone this anymore. We are going to enforce it strictly,” he said.

The FRSC boss called on the public, especially commuters, to speak up when their safety was threatened by reckless drivers.

He also appealed to the media to support FRSC’s sensitisation efforts, stressing that a crash-free Sallah was possible through cooperation, enforcement, and education.

“Passengers must stop being silent. It is their right to demand safe driving. Our prayer is that this Salah, we record no crash. We are committed to making that a reality,” he said.

Speaking, Mr Jibrin Uke, Zonal Chairman Karu, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), commended the FRSC for engaging drivers in safety education ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

Uke expressed gratitude for the sensitisation exercise, describing it as timely and impactful.

He noted that the union often addresses safety concerns with members, adding that hearing the message directly from FRSC officials had a greater impact.

“We really appreciate the FRSC staff for their visit. They enlightened our drivers, and we are happy about that.

“Most times, our drivers don’t take us seriously when we talk to them. But with FRSC coming personally to educate them, they listened and understood better,” he said.

The union leader reaffirmed NURTW’s support for the FRSC’s campaign for safer roads and called on passengers to cooperate by obeying safety rules and cautioning reckless drivers. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Dr Raymond Asemakaha, Managing Director, Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC), says that the newly established BIPC Juice/Concentrate Factories will curb post-harvest losses of orange and mango farmers.

Asemakaha stated this on Wednesday in Makurdi during a technical assessment of the newly installed 62,000-litre capacity juice/concentrate machine.

The managing director said the initiative aligns with Gov. Hyacinth Alia’s administration’s economic agenda, which focuses on reviving industries, agricultural value chain and sustainable job creation for the people.

“The concentrate factory will commence operations officially on July 2, while the main juice production line is scheduled to take off in September.

“We are committed to leveraging the state’s abundant agricultural produce to stimulate industrial growth and reduce waste.

“It is also to provide employment opportunities, as this factory is a testament to our dedication to building a productive and self-reliant Benue.

“Producers of orange and mango would be supplying directly to the company from September at the industrial layout in Makurdi.

“I am using this opportunity to call on orchard farmers to increase their production,” he said.

Mr Frank Runge, Managing Director of SONO Group, who conducted the assessment, expressed satisfaction with the level of readiness and quality of machinery installed at the factories.

Runge pledged SONO Group’s continued technical support to ensure a seamless take off and sustainable operation of the facilities.

SONO Group Limited is a multinational firm known for its expertise in industrial-scale juice processing, operations and machinery management.

“We are pleased with what we’ve seen so far; the infrastructure is solid, and we believe that once operations begin, BIPC’s facilities will stand as a model for agro-processing in West Africa,” he stated.

Mr Henry Boager, the maintenance officer of BIPC, carried out a detailed walkthrough of the facility and showcased the various components of the processing lines.

Boager took the team round the facility from the fruit intake stations to extraction, filtration, concentration, pasteurisation and packaging units.

The maintenance officer also demonstrated the technical capacity of the equipment, which he said can boost a production output of 62,000 litres of processed juice per hour.

“Every piece of equipment here has been selected to ensure we can process large volumes within tight timeframes, as this is key to preventing fruit spoilage and enhancing profitability for our local farmers.

“The machines are designed to minimise waste, maximise yield, and operate at high efficiency.

“The factory is a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to industrialise the Benue agricultural sector,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CTA, NEITI urge stronger FOI Act to boost transparency

CTA, NEITI urge stronger FOI Act to boost transparency

By Naomi Sharang

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have called for stronger Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to boost transparency in Nigeria.

The Freedom of Information (FoI) Act, enacted in 2011, is an Act to make public records and information more freely available for public access to public records and information.

Executive Director, CTA, Faith Nwadishi and the Executive Secretary, NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji made the call at “The North-Central Regional Roundtable on the FOI Act in Nigeria” held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The theme of the event is “14 Years of FOI and Extractives Transparency in Nigeria: Strengthening Access, Accountability and Citizen Engagement”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the roundtable is part of efforts under the Strengthening Accountability and Governance in Nigeria Initiative (SAGNI).

It is a 12-month project CTA is implementing with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC) and funding from the European Union through International IDEA.

In her address, Nwadishi said that the conversation was not just symbolic but was timely because the challenges around access to public information in Nigeria have reached a critical stage.

“Particularly in the extractive sector, which remains the economic lifeline of our country.

“Even with NEITI reports, it is still one of the most difficult sectors to obtain clear, timely and complete information from.

“The extractive sector—which includes oil, gas and solid minerals—is far too important to remain shrouded in secrecy with the huge revenue and foreign exchange earnings that come from the sector.

“It is also the sector most vulnerable to corruption, illicit financial flows, and opacity around contracts and revenue allocation.

“This is why NEITI’s reports are not just documents; they are vital instruments for FOI implementation,” she said.

She noted that there had been progress with the FOI Act since 2011 when former President Goodluck Jonathan signed the Act into law but added that implementation remained weak.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji said that the FOI Act marked a transformative moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

He proposes an amendment to the FOI Act that introduces sanctions for those who weaponise it through falsehood, blackmail or institutional harassment.

“This law must protect access—and punish abuse. If we do not act, the FOI Act risks losing its moral force and democratic utility”

Orji recommended the enactment of legal penalties for FOI misuse involving false identities, misinformation and blackmail.

On her part, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba said that the extractive sector relied heavily on transparency to foster sustainable development.

Jeddy-Agba was represented by Mariah Obafemi in the ministry.

She said: “The extractive industry is doing a lot well in the area of transparency and even in the area of complying with the FOI Act.

“The Attorney-General, by virtue of Section 29 of the Act, is mandated to submit annual compliance reports to the National Assembly.

“I can tell you that the extractive industry is doing well. They’ve been complying over the years,” she said.

Similarly, Programme Manager EU/RoLAC, Dr Emmanuel Uche, called for the deepening of the implementation of the FOI Act in Nigeria.

He urged civil society organisations and non-state actors to join hands again, to revive whistleblower’s laws, witness protection laws and public interest disclosure laws.(NAN)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday published the final list of 16 candidates for Nov. 8 Anambra Governorship Election.

The commission stated that campaigns would begin on June 11.

Mr Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this in Abuja.

Olumekun said that with the publication, no further withdrawal or replacement of candidates would be allowed, except in the event of death before the election date as provided by Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act.

He stated that 16 political parties uploaded the particulars of their candidates (Form EC9), by the deadline of 6 p.m. on Monday May 12, of which their personal particulars were recently published.

He noted that in line with the provision of Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, political parties were empowered to replace their candidates who voluntarily withdrew from the race.

“Accordingly, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), conducted a fresh primary election to replace its candidate while four political parties replaced their deputy governorship candidates.

“They are Accord (A), African Action Congress (AAC), Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

“The deadline for the withdrawal and substitution of candidates was Monday June 2.

“Consequently, the commission hereby publishes the final list of candidates that will contest in the Nov.8 2025 Anambra Governorship Election.

“Sixteen out of the 19 registered parties are participating in the election out of which the African Action Congress (AAC) and the National Rescue Movement (NRM) have nominated female candidates, while six parties are fielding female running mates.

“They are Accord (A), All Progressives Congress (APC), Action Peoples Party (APP), Boot Party (BP), Labour Party (LP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

“No party has nominated a person with disability as a candidate. In terms of age, the candidates’ ranged between 36 and 71 years,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the candidates according to the publication include Charles Soludo of APGA, Eze Nwafo Jude of PDP, Nwosu John of ADC, Ukachukwu Nicholas of APC and George Mogbalu of LP.

Olumekun said that the full list of the candidates by party, age, gender and academic qualifications had been uploaded on the commission’s website and social media platforms for public information.

He also disclosed that in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, political parties were at liberty to start their campaigns in public from Wednesday June 11 and end at midnight on Thursday Nov. 6.

Olumekun, however, warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against unlawful use of abusive language, physical attacks on opponents during rallies, processions and meetings or destruction of campaign materials.

These acts, according to him, are against Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022.

“Similarly, all parties and candidates must be given unimpeded access to public facilities for media campaign, outdoor advertising as well as public rallies and meetings.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022 prohibits the use of incumbency to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has called on Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s policies and counter the propaganda of terrorists and bandits.

Buratai made the call during his remarks at the 2025 Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum on Tuesday in Abuja.

The forum with the theme, “Renewed Hope Agenda: Citizen Engagement and National Security” was organised by VON with support from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

According to him citizens engagement and national security is very fundamental, stressing that such has not been formalised over the years.

He gave a narration on how Sweden coordinated its activities which enhanced citizens’ engagement, that led to a national force and that also gave birth to the Navy Seal we have in the world today.

“Citizens engagement is a force multiplier, be it intelligence or cyber activities that affect our nation’s strategic assets and installations. It is important to engage the citizens, especially vibrant youths who are into cyber security.

“It is good to engage them to dispel negative information and counter damaging propaganda by terrorists and bandits. Engaging them will also help in national security.

“Also, citizens should be engaged to support the policies of the government, to counter the propaganda of bandits and terrorists.

“This is because the terrorists and bandits are also in the media space and the social media space.

“And it is good to bring them down, deal with them responsibly so that they will understand that the whole nation is against banditry and terrorism, ” Buratai said.

He commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as “true renewed hope agenda under renewed hope administration”.

Buratai explained that unlike before, the Tinubu-led administration has brought in policies that have a long term effect that would be felt for the betterment of the country.

“Renewed Hope Agenda is fundamental. It is not like a palliative approach. This is a complete departure. And we hope that as time goes on, the impact will be felt and Nigeria will be much better.

“We need a better environment for economic activities to thrive and for the society to grow. I congratulate the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Malam Jibrin Ndace for organising the forum,” Buratai said. (NAN)
