Tech Herfrica, a leading social impact Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to empowering women in rural communities has unveiled a guidebook for implementing impactful programmes in rural communities.

Founder of the group, Mrs Imade Bibowei-Osuobeni, said during the unveiling that the publication “Breaking Barriers”, was loaded with strategies and tactics.

Bibowei-Osuobeni said the move was to honour rural women on the occasion of International Women’s Day and also to ensure that they have access to the various empowerment programmes aimed at driving change in some rural areas in FCT and Nasarawa.

She emphasised the importance of collaboration, stating that the community of practice would facilitate the sharing of insights, data, and resources crucial for the successful implementation of the programmes.

Bibowei-Osuobeni also stated that stakeholders needed to work together to utilise a holistic approach for poverty reduction.

“With contributions from seasoned experts boasting a collective five decades of experience, the book equips change makers with the necessary knowledge to effect lasting change in rural settings.

“The book will also help to break the cycle of poverty, reduce inequalities and boost agriculture and trade.

“Tech Herfrica inaugurated the Rural Community of Practice, a collaborative platform designed to bring together like-minded individuals and organisations committed to driving positive change in rural areas.

“The community of practice will facilitate the sharing of insights, data and resources crucial for the successful implementation of programmes,” she said.

Funmi Okubanjo, founder, Aziza Development Foundation and one of the contributors to the book, urged stakeholders to priortise collaboration in order to accelerate investment in women towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Osarugue Amayanvbo, a special guest at the event and the book reviewer, said the book contained relevant tips that can help change-makers achieve lasting impact in rural settings.

She also expressed surprise at how the tactics shared in the book can be used by businesses to achieve success.

Prominent figures from both the private and public sectors graced the event, including Dr Ese Owie, former Chairman, Edo State Board of Internal Revenue and Prince Godswill Edward, a two-time Special Adviser on Youths Development to Rivers governor.

Others are Dr Nicholas Allo, CEO, Visual Earth Limited; Esohe Ekunwe, Director of Operations and Strategy at Tech Herfrica; and Ivie Ogiemwonyi, a lawyer and social entrepreneur.

Their enthusiastic support underscored the significance of Tech Herfrica’s efforts in promoting gender equality and empowering women in rural communities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Activists seek women inclusion in policymaking

Activists seek women inclusion in policymaking

Some stakeholders in gender equality have called for the implementation of gender-responsive policies to address challenges affecting women in the country.

They made the call in Abuja on Thursday at a book presentation, ‘Politics, X and Power’, authored by Adaora Sydney-Jack, Executive Director, Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI).

Sydney-Jack, while noting the challenges affecting women, urged governments at all levels to show the political will by involving more women in policy making and its implementation in the country.

“Government should show the political will not just in theory/semantics of getting more women involved in political offices alone.

“The political will should be in policymaking, because if women are part of policymaking and implementation, direct outcomes of more women in governance will be seen.

“Political parties need to reinvent the wheel by having women in leadership positions outside women leaders,” she said.

Speaking in the same vein, Amina Arong, the National Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said after 25 years of joining politics, nothing had changed in terms of women participation.

“I got into politics when I was 25 years old. 25 years later, I realised that nothing has changed in terms of women participation in politics.

“Our political space is shrinking for women. So, we’re asking for gender sensitive men to give us a chance on the table so that we can begin to talk about our own issues,” she said.

On her part, Monalisa Chinda, Founder of the Arise Monalisa Foundation, said it was about time people began to look the way of women in terms of inclusion.

Earlier in his keynote address, Abubakar Sulaiman, the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), recommended the book, ‘Politics, X and Power’, saying that it would be useful for academics, researchers, students and policy makers, among others.

Dr Chima Amadi, the Guest Speaker, stressed the need for Nigeria to focus on building solid democratic institutions, including the judiciary, electoral commission and legislature, to uphold the rule of law and prevent abuse of power. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

World Water Day: Lagos unveils new WASH policy

World Water Day: Lagos unveils new WASH policy

WASH

By Adebola Adegoke/Mariam Akande

The Lagos State Government, has unveiled its new Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) policy 2023, aimed at improving access to clean water and sanitation.

The state government said that the policy was also in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Six.

The policy was presented during an event organised in commemoration of the 2024 World Water Day with the theme: “Water for Peace.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State WASH policy was developed by the Lagos State Government with technical support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The technical support came through the USAID/Nigeria Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (LUWASH) Activity.

Presenting the policy, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu said it served as a guiding framework in the journey towards ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation.

Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab.

“This comprehensive policy outlines a holistic approach to water management, encompassing strategies for conservation, pollution prevention, and equitable distribution.

“By implementing the provisions of the WASH Policy, we reaffirm our commitment to leave no-one behind in our quest for water security and peace.

“In our pursuit of water security and sustainability, it is imperative that we embrace the principles of inclusivity and equity.

“By addressing water scarcity and inequities in access, we can mitigate conflicts and build a more peaceful and just society,” he said.

The governor added that the ongoing activities of the LUWASH project supported by USAID, exemplified the government’s dedication to promoting water security and sustainability in urban areas.

He said that LUWASH was currently supporting the water sector in various activities, which included rehabilitation of five micro/mini water works for Lagos Water Corporation (LWC).

He said that it also included capacity building for Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) in the area of tariff setting, and supporting the development of a business case for Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO).

“Through innovative interventions and partnerships, we are improving water infrastructure, enhancing sanitation services, and empowering communities to take ownership of their water resources.

“By investing in urban WASH initiatives, we are not only improving the quality of life for urban dwellers, but also fostering resilience and social cohesion in our cities.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Aliyu Shinkafi, said access to clean water remained a luxury for too many people.

Utsev said that this led to inequality, conflict, and instability.

“More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders.

“Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water as reported by the UN waters.

“Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle.

“Today, we are confronted with unprecedented challenges, from the escalating impacts of climate change to the growing demands of a rapidly expanding global population.

“Yet, in the face of these challenges, we must also recognise the immense potential of water as a catalyst for cooperation, collaboration and peace-building,” he said.

Speaking on the theme, Utsev highlighted the power of water to create peace or spark conflict.

According to him, when water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal, or no access to water, tensions can rise between communities and countries.

“By harnessing the power of water as a tool for diplomacy and dialogue, we can bridge divides, build trust and forge lasting partnerships that transcend the limitations of geography and ideology.

“By promoting inclusive governance structures, promoting integrated water resource management, and investing in water infrastructure and technology, we can create the conditions for peace to flourish and prosperity to thrive,” he said.

Mr James Racicot, LUWASH Chief of Party, explained that LUWASH was implemented in 2023 as a five-year $38.9 million activity supported by USAID.

He said that it was to increase the availability, quality and use of safe water and sanitation services.

According to him, the objectives of the LUWASH activity are to strengthen governance and institutional arrangement to deliver improved WASH services, improve public and private service provider performance.

Others, Racicot said, are to increase access to safe and sustainable water services and improve the quality of source water.

“LUWASH has started capacity building of key institutional stakeholders and will soon begin rehabilitation of selected priority Lagos Water Corporation water works to enable increased water production and supply,” Racicot said.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has promised Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, of FCT Administration’s support to curb insecurity in the nation.

Wike, who made the pledge when the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) visited him in Abuja on Friday, acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Nigerian military to keep Nigeria safe.

He assured Musa of FCTA’s support in whatever form, to improve the security situation in the country and maintain the territorial integrity of the nation.

“Do not hesitate to tell us whatever support you need from the FCT,” he said.

He said that the National Assembly had passed the 2024 FCT Statutory Budget, adding that a provision was made in the budget for the procurement of drones for security agencies.

This, according to him, will support security agencies to win the ongoing war against all forms of insecurity, particularly in the FCT.

“The budget of FCT has been passed by the National Assembly.

“We have made provisions in the budget to buy drones to help security agencies in their efforts to reduce the level of crime in the whole of FCT.

“We are providing logistics to the security agencies and in the next few days, patrol vehicles and the communication gadgets for the security agencies will be ready.

“What we are also trying to do is to build an FCT Rapid Response Centre that will be managed by a joint team of the military, the police, Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

The minister said that the centre would be equipped with every form of technology to strengthen the fight against insecurity.

He condoled with the families of the Nigerian military over the incident in Delta that left several military personnel dead.

Describing the incident as barbaric, Wike said: “We as FCT, we will support the Nigerian military in whichever way we can.

“Let’s see what we can do to reduce the pains of the families.”

Earlier, the CDS explained that the visit was to commend Wike for the transformation taking place in the FCT within the short time of being in office as FCT minister.

He equally assured the minister the support of the members of the Armed Forces in whatever way.

He reminded the minister that the armed forces were duty bound to protect Nigerians and defend Nigeria and would not infringe on the rights of the people.

On the menace of one chance, kidnappings and other forms of criminalities, Musa said that he had set up a committee to see how to support ongoing response.

He promised to support the Nigerian Police with ground and air troops in their efforts to maintain peace.

“We are looking at how we can assist the police in responding to acts of criminality.

“What we are trying to do is to build a force that will be on standby 24/7, in case there’s anything happening, we can provide additional support to the police,” he said. (NAN)

Spokesperson  to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),  Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Olukoyede said this when the Registrar-General of the CAC, Mr  Hussani Magaji, SAN, led his management team on a courtesy call to the EFCC chairman in Abuja.

He noted that the EFCC and CAC were handling sensitive and crucial assignments for Nigerians, a fact that should make responses to public enquiries quicker and better.

“We are grateful for the access that you have provided for us to some of your information and resources.

“But we want to crave your indulgence to ensure speedy response to our requests and better synergy because of the nature of the work we do.

“Corruption in Nigeria has become a cankerworm working against our development.

“Anything that has to do with investigation and prosecution and other activities that will reduce corruption, must be taken as a priority by every Nigerian,” he said.

The EFCC boss also assured the CAC team of the commission’s cooperation.

He stressed that it might be necessary to raise a small-member joint task force between the commissions to improve on synergy and access to information to boost investigations.

“We want to assure you of our collaboration at every point in time and because of the nature of the work we do, we need to collaborate even more.

“We want to crave your indulgence to expand the scope of the access you have provided for us.

Group calls for Nigeria Customs Act amendment for enhanced service delivery

Group calls for Nigeria Customs Act amendment for enhanced service delivery

By Diana Omueza

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called for the amendment of the Nigeria Customs Act for an enhanced
service delivery.

Mr Ibrahim Zikirullahi, the Executive Director, CHRICED, stated this in Abuja at a news conference.

Zikirullahi said that the alleged revelations of monumental corruption in the Nigeria Customs Service had necessitated the need for a reform to overhaul of the service.

“On Feb. 27, Nigeria’s Premium Times reported a corruption scandal involving a group of seven high-ranking officers from the Nigeria Customs Service(NCS).

“According to a media source an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission revealed that these officers were found to have accepted a total of N12 billion in bribes from smugglers.

“Undercover investigator Fisayo Soyombo of Foundation for Investigative Journalism also revealed in a 16-minute undercover video showing how easy it is to smuggle anything into Nigeria with the complicity of corrupt customs officials.

“In spite these actions, the President Tinubu led administration has not taken significant action to hold those responsible accountable,” he said.

He added that centre strongly condemned the deep-rooted corruption, deliberate sabotage, and misconduct at high levels within the NCS.

“We urgently call for thorough investigations and a complete overhaul to restore the organisation’s integrity,” he said.

Zikirullahi said that it was disgraceful that in spite of the recent exposure of a massive bribery scandal involving senior officers the government had yet to take action.

He urged the President to take decisive measures to provide the necessary leadership in the fight against corruption in the country.

Zikirullahi said that the absence of accountability and transparency in the government had created a culture of impunity which is eroding public trust in government institutions and hindering the nation’s progress.

He called for a transparent and timely review of the annual auditor general’s report and that recommendations be made concerning the misuse of powers by the NCS and the Minister of Interior.

“We call for the immediate initiation of measures to recover the unlawful waivers granted by Customs to companies and personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We recommend immediate suspension and prosecution of the corrupt Customs officers identified in the EFCC investigation, along with the recovery of the entire bribe amounts they received.

“We call for prompt investigation, arrest, and prosecution of all officers implicated in the recent undercover investigation by Fisayo Soyombo.

“Specifically, we propose a thorough inquiry into the accusations of smuggling of foreign rice and other prohibited items by a senior customs officer in a video featuring the infamous smuggler, IBD Bande,” he said.

Zikirullahi called for immediate implementation of other audit actions, including sanctions against the comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs regarding non-remittance of levies, taxes, and other infractions of established public sector financial regulation.

He urged Tinubu to prioritise the establishment of a comprehensive national strategy to combat corruption.

He also suggested that autonomy be granted to anticorruption bodies to enhance the necessary independence and authority to effectively carry out their duties without any external interference or influence.

This, he said, was the only way to empower independent bodies to carry out investigations and prosecute corruption cases without fear of reprisal or political pressure.

“It is crucial to strengthen anticorruption institutions to ensure their effectiveness and efficiency.

“This can be accomplished by providing them with adequate financial and human resources to fulfil their mandate.

“This includes recruiting and training competent and dedicated staff, as well as equipping them with the necessary tools and technology to carry out their work.

“It is also imperative to rigorously enforce adherence to established financial regulations within the public sector and any violations should be swiftly and decisively dealt with, imposing appropriate penalties on those found guilty,” he said.

Zikirullahi said that such actions against corruption would serve as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers and send a strong message that corruption would not be tolerated.

He called for the adoption of best practices in financial management and procurement processes in public institutions and the creation of environments that are less susceptible to corruption.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

Don’t allow banks to fail- EFCC boss tasks NDIC

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has urged the Nigeria Deposit  Insurance Corporation (NDIC), to keep closer watch on banks across the country to avoid failure and its attendant unsavoury effects on the economy.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

The chairman said this when the Managing Director of NDIC, Bello Hassan and other top management staff of the corporation, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Olukoyede linked bank failure to economic and financial crimes and cautioned the NDIC and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue to beam searchlights on banks to strengthen them against liquidation.

“There is a nexus between criminal activities and liquidation of banks. When they don’t play by the rules, you discover that ultimately, the banks will be folded up and that’s always the problem and so you have a very critical role to play to avoid bank failure.

“We are ready to support you, we are ready to collaborate with you in any capacity to achieve this,” he said.

The EFCC’s boss described the NDIC as a critical partner and vital agent in the fight against economic and financial crimes

He pointed out that the corporation had considerable strength to deepen and strengthen growth in the economy of the nation.

“One of the key issues that I promised Nigerians is to use the instrumentality of anti-corruption to stimulate growth in the economy.

“And, when you look at that critically, you will discover that the financial industry is very critical in growing the economy and of course, we all know that NDIC plays a major role,” he said.

He pledged a deeper collaboration of the EFCC with the corporation, maintaining that the two agencies have wider areas of relevance to the development of the nation.

“I am aware of the relationship between NDIC and the EFCC. We will strengthen and deepen it in the overall interest of our nation,” he said.

Olukoyede also explained that courts usually determined the destination of recoveries made by the EFCC.

“NDIC can always apply to the government for any recovery if it is not paid directly into its account,” he said.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Hassan congratulated Olukoyede on his appointment and expressed confidence in his efforts toward repositioning the EFCC in the fight against economic and financial crimes.

“We believe you have all it takes to move this commission forward in the fight against economic and financial crimes, which will go a long way in helping Mr. President achieve his agenda of ‘Renewed Hope’ for Nigerians,” he said.

Speaking on the mandate of NDIC, Hassan said the corporation was one of the safety nets in the financial services industry.

He stressed that the EFCC was one of its critical stakeholders in the attainment of its objectives.

“The mandate of NDIC includes bank supervision, liquidation of licensed deposit -taking institutions.

“In addition to that, NDIC has the mandate to root out those responsible for failure of those institutions to account.

“That is why we recognise EFCC as one of our critical stakeholders in the journey toward the attainment of our objective,” he said.

He called for stronger collaboration with the EFCC, maintaining that the commission had always been of tremendous help to the NDIC.

“The whole objective is to see how we can deepen the collaboration that existed between NDIC and the EFCC.

“Like I have said, EFCC has assisted us greatly in what we are doing. In 2022, the EFCC graciously agreed to establish a desk for us in Abuja as well as Lagos,” he said.

He appealed that recoveries made by the EFCC for the NDIC should be directly returned to the corporation and not into government’s cofers.(NAN)

By Olasunkanmi Onifade

An indigenous engineering firm, Alfa Designs Nigeria Limited, has inaugurated Phoenix V Tomex S240 Industrial Computed Tomography Machine, the first of its kind in the country.

The Company’s Research Analyst, Mr Mubarak Abdul, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Abdul said as technology continues to advance and shape the cause of human innovations, the developed world has always taken the lead in the key areas of research and development while Africa still lags behind.

According to him, Industrial computed tomography machine is an equipment used to carry out a computer-aided tomographic process using X-ray radiation to produce three-dimensional internal and external representations of a scanned object.

He said that the benefits of using industrial CT Scanning include quality control for failure investigation and pre-production inspection; internal and external part inspection and quick and accurate resulting data.

Other functions according to him, include images that are easier to interpret than conventional radiographic data, cut costs; and improved product design.

“For inspecting and testing the internal and external structure and design of various complex parts and components without destructing or disassembling the product, Industrial CT systems are increasingly being used as they can help in determining the design, structure, and dimensions.

“With industrial CT scanning, manufacturers can look inside the products to identify issues pertaining to design and production discrepancies, ensure a lot of consistency, and provides highly accurate and detailed measurements of internal components.

“Apart from aerospace, automotive, and aviation applications,  ICT can be used to inspect the inside of electronic equipment such as radios, and because of the extreme spatial resolution, some machines are capable of imaging the inside of cables that conduct electricity or optical fibers and computer chips,” he said. According to him, the 2024 WMO Day with the theme  “ At the Frontline of Climate Action“ is a call for a collective resolve towards harnessing the power of weather and climate information for the betterment of humanity.

On his part, Mr Bernard Gomez, WMO Representative for North, Central and West Africa, said that the “Early Warnings for All” initiative embarked on by NiMet perfectly complements the 2024 WMO Day theme.

According to him, the initiative underscores the vital role of accessible, timely weather information in saving lives and livelihoods.

“Resilience to climate shocks can be achieved! The various forecasts and warnings issued by NiMet are just the starting point for this to happen in the entire country.

“ Next is the adoption and implementation of the National Framework for Application of Climate Services (NFACS) in Nigeria.

“An operational NFACS will see every inhabitant of this country provided with accurate and fit-for-purpose weather, water and climate services.

“This will not only ensure safety of lives from climate-related hazards but would enhance socio-economic development and prosperity,”  he said.

NAN reports that March 23 of every year is set aside to commemorate the founding of the WMO and acknowledge the pivotal role it plays in promoting international cooperation and coordination in the field of meteorology, hydrology, and related sciences.

However, NiMet held the 2024 WMO Day celebration on March 21 (today) to ensure effective participation of young ones and other stakeholders.(NAN)
