The Centre for Food Safety and Agricultural Research (CEFSAR), an NGO, has urged the Federal Government to be mindful of the acceptance and deployment of genetically engineered crops, categorised as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

The group communicated this at a High Level Dialogue on Food Security on Wednesday in Abuja, as a prelude to its symposium slated for Thursday.

The primary objectives of CEFSAR are to preserve native seed varieties, research sustainable agriculture practices and promote agro-ecological farming systems.

Others are to support local and indigenous farming communities, and educate farmers and stakeholders in the immediate society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government recently approved the commercial release and open cultivation of a new maize variety, Tela Maize, a genetically modified maize.

The maize was developed by researchers at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who say it resists fall armyworm, stem borers and tolerate moderate drought.

Speaking to the dialogue, Prof. Qrissturberg Amua, Executive Director, CEFSAR, said the essence was to initiate a stakeholders’ engagement, interrogate GMOs and the motives behind them.

“We first of all begin with all those who consume GMOs in the form of modern crops that are being promoted in this country.

“And also, if you look at the venue of this engagement, it is the Federal Ministry of Justice, and a lot of the intrusion that is coming through GMOs is coming through policies and laws.

“And a lot of these policies pass through clearance from this ministry.

“So, we believe that by initiating this conversation today, we are attracting attention into the concerns of GMOs that we roll forward,” he said.

Amua said he was hopeful that the advocacy would gain momentum because important stakeholders would begin to talk about it and draw the attention of the government and consumers to the dangers inherent in pushing for GMOs.

According to the academic, food security has an intricate nexus with national security as a “hungry man is angry man”.

“We have observed that part of issues of national security are born out of aggression between individuals or groups.

”But beyond that, a crime is fueled when the larger population is hungry; they don’t get food to eat and that translates to poverty.

“In this particular context, today, it is being said that food is scare in Nigeria and it is because certain food production areas in the country have been attacked consistently for over a decade.

“And we realise that over this decade of attacks on food production areas, people have been displaced to initiate food scarcity; they have been pushed away from their farms.

“Because they cannot farm, we have food scarcity; so you can see, on one hand, national insecurity produces food insecurity.

“Now, take a reverse of it; because there is national food insecurity now, it is going to perpetrate further our national insecurity, in the sense that you have people taken away from their farms.

”A lot of farmers have been chased into camps.”

He said that CEFSAR’s observations indicated that there had been a lot of misinformation or deception targeted at some people in government—those who were at critical point of driving policy.

He said that one of the aims of the dialogue and symposium was to redress the misinformation.

“So, that is one of the reasons we are initiating this conversation—to attract their attention; we are essentially partnering with government and in our own expectation, our partnership is on education.

“I am a professor, a scientist. I have conducted some of these researches myself.

”So, I believe that with me involved in this conversation, the people in government who genuinely have been misinformed or deceived, will pick interest and begin to ask the relevant questions,” he said.

In his keynote address, Dr Nnimmo Bassey, Director, Health of Mother Earth Foundation, said there was need to stick to agro-ecological methods of food production.

Represented by Mariam Bassey, Deputy Executive Director, Environment Rights/Action Friends of the Earth, Nigeria, Bassey said that available data showed that 70 per cent of small scale farmers fed the world through agro-ecological principles and techniques.

“So why do one want to jump into something that produces your food in a system with so many uncertainties? A system that lace your food with pesticides, chemicals and insecticides.

“We need to ban them; we don’t need GMOs. Nigeria and indeed, Africa, has all it takes to grow food, to produce food that can feed our people and also export to other countries,” he said.

On his part, Dr Segun Adebayo, Director of Operations, CEFSAR, said that GMOs contained chemicals that were harmful and predisposed humans to diseases.

According to him, everybody who eats is a stakeholder in the business of food.

“You are what you eat; you have to be concerned about what you eat; that is the reason we are having this engagement.

“The first step to being healthy is your food.”

Adebayo urged Nigerians to be wary of GMOs and promote the natural food, adding that the symposium was aimed at creating a balance of knowledge and give people the opportunity to choose what they consumed. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Arise Monalisa Foundation and One Percent International, NGOs, have advocated the need for greater investment in women and youth to boost their socio-economic and political advancement in Nigeria.

The call was made during a press briefing in Abuja ahead of their conference commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD), themed “Count Her In: Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress”, scheduled for March 28 in Abuja.

Monalisa Chinda, Founder of Arise Monalisa Foundation, highlighted the initiative’s goal of addressing economic challenges by empowering women for financial independence.

“I decided to collaborate with One Percent International management to see how we can reach out to young people who are thriving in their businesses or struggling to help them stabilise in this economy.

“This is in line with the UN IWD theme. In Nigeria, we need the women to be counted in at the helm of affairs.

“Collaboration is necessary and I always hope that women would always come together to support one another.

“We want to help young people and women grow their businesses, “she said.

According to her, some beneficiaries that have already applied for the support through their website will be selected and given financial support, leadership skills, as well as monitored to ensure progress and success of their businesses.

She explained further that through the initiative, they would collaborate with banks and notable individuals to support young female business owners.

“We have a website where we asked people to register and showcase their goods and products.

“We currently have about 300 people who have registered, and we will select the people to benefit from the initiative,”she said.

On her part, Stephanie Nnamdi, Chief Executive Officer, One Percent International, said the application to participate in the empowerment exercise was open to every young eligible woman.

“It is open for everybody to try to get in. But on that day, the people that will get the benefit will be 10 through proper solution.

“The financial institutions are the ones that are going to manage the money for them like a mentorship to ensure accountability.

“It’s not money that you take and spend on frivolities. This is strictly for business and they must be monitored,”she said.

Also, Uchenna Amadi, Strategist Manager, said the collaboration would not only improve the economic status of the beneficiaries but also impacted on the nation’s economy.

“The foundation since 2013 has been a beacon of hope for women who are striving to be the best in their space.

“And this time she has partnered with one Percent International to make sure it becomes something that the country will be concerned about.

“We will create an opportunity for women to learn and their skills harnessed, so we ask everyone to come and support,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other highlights to mark the IWD conference include: panel discussions, exhibition, and launch of AMF Hub and networking sessions. (NAN)

Stakeholders push for inmate voting rights in Electoral Act review

Some stakeholders in the justice sector on Wednesday urged the National Assembly to include the right of inmates to vote in the proposed review of the Electoral Act.

The stakeholders made the call at a roundtable in Abuja on the reform of custodial centres organised by Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organisation (CAPIO) in collaboration with YIAGA Africa and Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Rev. Father Jude Isiguzo, the Executive Director of CAPIO, said there was no legal inhibition to granting the right as a court had ruled on the matter since 2014.

Isiguzo said that besides the convicts, those awaiting trial have every right to vote.

”There is also no legal or constitutional provision against the participation of these persons from voting during elections in Nigeria.

“It is necessary that we take a leaf from some of the African countries where inmates in custodial centres vote in national elections.

“In South Africa, for example, elections officers have visited correctional centres across their country to register over 100,000 inmates to vote in this year’s national election.

“In Zambia and Kenya, inmates vote in their national elections. These are just some of the African countries that uphold the rights of adult citizens to vote in their national elections,” he added.

Isiguzo also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to lead the revalidation of the draft framework on inmates voting.

He also solicited the support of INEC to work with the National Assembly towards capturing inmates in the voting process.

“We request the two chambers of the National Assembly to graciously capture inmates voting in Nigerian general elections in the reform of the electoral act being expected.

“We also request the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to write INEC on their readiness to have inmates registered and also for polling units to be established in the correctional centres,” he said.

In his remarks, Adebayo Balogun, Chairman, House committee on Electoral Matters, believed that inmates who were not convicted should be allowed to vote in general elections.

Balogun, represented by Adegbenga Adeboyejo, said Nigeria should take lessons from some African countries that allowed inmates to vote.

“I believe that inmates who are not convicted have the right to vote during the national election. We will support this and we will ensure this come to be,” he added.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said the commission has been making efforts since 2015 to get inmates to vote.

Yakubu, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Mr Mohammed Kuna said, “we will put heads together and ensure this happen in Nigeria. I can see clearly that by 2027, inmates will vote in Nigeria.”

In his goodwill message, the Controller General of NCoS, Haliru Nababa, said that the service has no objection in getting inmates in their custody to vote during elections.

According to him, the NCoS is fully ready and aware that inmates’ right to vote may come with challenges and is preparing for that.

Nababa who was represented by the Controller Operations, Ibrahim Usman, said that it was high time that inmates in Nigeria are allowed to vote.

According to him, it will be morale booster for the inmates as they would not feel neglected.

“Awaiting trial inmates are not guilty of any crime and they have the right to vote in Nigeria. We are ready when this is ready,” he added.

Also, the Programme Coordinator of YIAGA Africa, Mr Ibrahim Faruk, called on civil society organisations and spirited individuals to join hands with CAPIO to ensure that the advocacy succeeds.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has solicited partnership with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for the promotion of its reforms in film classification operations.

Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/ CEO of the board made the request when he paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of NAN, Mallam Ali Muhammad Ali on Wednesday in Abuja.

Husseini, who was accompanied by his management team, said NFVCB under his watch was carrying out landmark reforms in its operations to effectively deliver on its mandate in line with global best practice.

He said NAN was a crucial stakeholder of NFVCB because of its wide reach, as well as its credible and authoritative reportage of the nation’s creative sector.

“We want to partner with the news agency of Nigeria to get some of the information that we want to pass to every nook and cranny of the country.

“There is no doubt, if you want to get your news to the nooks and cranny of this country NAN is the right partner, so I thought it was important that we come here first.

“I thought that first place to go should be the primary source of news, and as far as I am concerned, the News Agency of Nigeria is the place to be.

“This is not just about working together, but also we are partners in progress in our effort to drive home President Bola Tinubu renewed hope agenda.

“Also, considering the way NAN operates, there is not a media out there that do not get news from NAN, so that is why we are here.

“I would like to thank you for giving us this opportunity to be here, as I have just assumed office in less than 10 days,” he said.

According to Husseini, NFVCB as a critical stakeholder in the nation’s creative sector, particularly the film industry, is expected to discharge its statutory functions in tandem with global best practices.

Husseini said that the board under its current leadership is initiating major reforms to ensure that it delivers more effectively on its statutory mandate.

He said such reforms included complete digitisation of its operations, as well as efforts to rechristen the boards name for it to appropriately reflect its statutory functions.

“At the moment now, the board is moving from censorship to classification, because all over the world the idea is to actually allow some level of creativity to thrive.

“Censorship is actually a term used under the military regime, but we are going to try to move from there because globally it is known as classification board.

“However, we have a lot of media illiterates that we need to speed up their understanding for them to properly understand our classification symbols.

“This is why we need NAN to help us in our media literacy drive because Nigerians need to be conversant with our classification symbols and activities,” he said.

Responding, the managing director of NAN assured Husseini and his team of the agency’s readiness to work closely work with NFVCB in promoting its activities and the nations motion picture industry.

Ali, who congratulated Husseini, said his appointment by President Tinubu to head the NFVCB was a clear manifestation of the president’s determination reposition the board.

“When you have a very competent captain who has paid his dues as performing artiste, a journalist, an administrator, with years of experience, you know that whatever turbulence there is, the ship will safely dock.

“We are deeply honoured to have you here, and like you rightly pointed out, NAN is the right partner you can work with because we are everywhere.

“So, congratulations and welcome once again to NAN, as we look forward to a very purposeful working relationship,” he said.(NAN) (nannews.ng)
